Brief Background
|
The publication of Cadernos Pagu began in 1993 and has since contributed to the establishment of the field of gender studies in Brazil. The journal was created at a time when gender studies already had some academic legitimacy in the country, and the intention was to increase their visibility by disseminating and stimulating the production of knowledge in the area. The creation of Cadernos Pagu was the result of more than two years of readings, research, and debates, during which members of the Pagu Center for Gender Studies at Unicamp mapped out the advances and impasses in the production of gender studies. The first issue was entirely written by members of the Center, whose articles outlined these concerns. Between the second and third issues, the publication redefined its editorial policy and, simultaneously, opened up to contributions from Brazilian and foreign researchers. To this end, a body of ad hoc reviewers was formed, and the Editorial Committee and Board were created. From the fifth issue onwards, the journal received external funding from the university. Indeed, there are two distinct moments in the publication's history, visible in various aspects of the journal, linked to obtaining support from various agencies - FAPESP, FAEPEx (Fund for Support of Teaching, Research, and Extension, from Unicamp), and, above all, CNPq, which granted the most significant support in terms of resources and continuity from 1996 onwards. This funding was crucial for the publication's growth, not only in terms of improving graphic quality and incorporating a greater number of texts but also in adapting to editorial standards, expanding the Editorial Board, and registering with various national and international indexing services. Cadernos Pagu, a annual interdisciplinary publication, aims to contribute to the expansion and strengthening of the interdisciplinary field of gender studies in Brazil and to the exchange of knowledge produced at an international level. It publishes original, unpublished articles with scientific contributions that contribute to theoretical and methodological innovation and/or add innovative empirical knowledge. It also fosters debates on relevant theoretical texts in the field of gender studies, thus enabling the dissemination of knowledge in the area and a critical reading of international production. |

Ethics in Publication

The journal Cadernos Pagu is attentive to plagiarism, conflicts of interest, research misconduct, and authorship declarations, as well as ensuring that articles make their research data available for citation, referencing, and consultation. We recommend that all authors interested in submitting articles to the journal consult the SciELO Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication. When submitting an article, the author must declare that all ethical guidelines regarding the integrity of the scientific activities carried out for the research have been respected, and they must also state their sources of funding. If applicable, they must also declare that the ethical principles were submitted to their institution's ethics committee and approved by it. The observance of good research ethics practices is the exclusive responsibility of the author. Focus and Scope

Cadernos Pagu publishes original, unpublished articles with scientific contributions that provide theoretical and methodological innovation and/or add innovative empirical knowledge. It also promotes debates around relevant theoretical texts in the field of gender studies, thereby enabling the dissemination of knowledge in the area and a critical reading of international production. Peer Review Process

Cadernos Pagu adopts a peer-review policy for the analysis and evaluation of all submitted manuscripts, with double anonymous review. The reviews of articles previously submitted to the SciELO Preprints platform will follow the informed peer-review analysis model. In the "Behind the Scenes of Feminist Knowledge Production" section, open reviews will be published if authorized by mutual agreement between the authors and the reviewers of the submitted manuscripts. For each published article, the name of the editors responsible for its evaluation process will be indicated. Evaluation Criteria Articles are evaluated based on formal aspects—clarity, objectivity, adherence to journal rules—and content aspects—dialogue with feminist and gender studies, innovative empirical, theoretical, and/or methodological contributions, consistency of arguments, theoretical-methodological coherence, and evidence to support the arguments. Articles go through a triple evaluation filter:
Evaluation Time The time between submission and the final decision takes, on average, 10 months. If approved, the article enters the editing phase. The date of submission of the final version determines the article's position in the publication queue. The status of the article can be tracked through the SciELO submission platform. |
Open Data
|
The journal encourages authors to make the data used and generated in the research underlying the texts available whenever possible and requires the completion of the Open Science Compliance Form as one of the mandatory steps of the submission. |

Policy on Conflict of Interest
|
To avoid conflicts of interest, the journal cadernos pagu follows peer-review practices, ensuring that articles are forwarded to reviewers who do not have professional or personal relationships with the authors of the submitted articles. Supervisors, co-authors of articles and monographs, and family members are not considered when designating ad hoc reviewers. In addition to this practice, designated reviewers must declare if they have a conflict of interest with the article to be reviewed before issuing their evaluation. Any conflict of interest prevents the review. |
Adoption of Similarity Software
|
Following good research practices, the first step of evaluation consists of checking the article's similarity index in the Turnitin anti-plagiarism system. Texts with more than 26% similarity to texts by other authors, and/or 40% of the same authorship, will be rejected. |
Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

The journal cadernos pagu does not use or accept the use of artificial intelligence software and chatbots. |
Ethics Committee

In the case of research involving human subjects, we recommend that authors attach a declaration of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research. If it is not possible to send this document, we request an explanatory letter. |

Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis. When submitting, it is mandatory to fill in the metadata fields: institutional affiliation, institution of the last degree obtained, city, state, country, email, and ORCID. SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT THE ORCID INFORMATION FOR ALL AUTHORS AND CO-AUTHORS IN THE FIELDS INDICATED IN THE SYSTEM. It is mandatory to submit mini-CVs in the "biography summary" field at the time of submission. The final version of the approved article will be published with the name of the editor or editors responsible for the manuscript's evaluation process. |

SECTIONS
Behind the Scenes of Feminist Knowledge Production This is a section of cadernos pagu dedicated to the reflection and publication of raw research materials that can contribute to the development and problematization of various issues central to feminist thought and knowledge. It aims to make visible the academic and scientific processes through which articles, reviews, and dossiers are created. The section is subdivided into two subsections: Documents and Critical Comments. In Documents, research materials such as interviews, documentary sources, and photographs are published, accompanied by an introduction that justifies the relevance of publishing these materials for the development of feminist knowledge production. Submissions for this section must be made by a letter to the editor. The submitted documents are evaluated by the editorial committee. The introduction must not exceed 2500 words. In Critical Comments, evaluations issued by ad hoc reviewers of articles approved for publication in the journal will be published. The decision on which reviews will be published as Critical Comments in the journal rests with the Editorial Committee of cadernos pagu. Dossier Understood as a coherent and heterogeneous collection of articles (between five and ten) that provides critical reflection on a specific theme, its different and divergent theoretical, conceptual, and methodological sources. Dossier proposals must be submitted to the journal's editors in Portuguese and English, justifying: 1) the historical and current relevance of the proposal for feminist and gender studies, articulated with other differences; 2) the divergences or tensions addressed and the contributions to the expansion, improvement, and/or deepening of the theme and the impact on different disciplinary areas (between 6,500 and 12,000 characters with spaces). Dossier proposals submitted to cadernos pagu will be evaluated by the journal's editorial committee. If approved, an open call will be published on the journal's website (lasting two months) for article submissions. The coordinating proponents of the dossier will first receive extended abstracts (between 6,500 and 12,000 characters with spaces) with article proposals. The extended abstracts must present the article plan, detailing: a) the object of analysis; b) an outline of the theoretical-methodological debate that supports the argument; c) a demonstration of how the proposed publication advances and/or innovates upon the state of the art in the field of gender studies and feminist theories in dialogue with the dossier's theme. After the selection of abstracts by the dossier coordinators, the authors must submit their articles on the SciELO Submission Platform within three months. In this stage, all articles will be submitted individually through the SciELO Platform and will undergo a double-blind peer review. The evaluations of each article will be shared with the dossier organizers, and the editorial decisions will be made in collaboration with the editors and the journal's Editorial Committee. Please note that the dossier should include approximately 30% foreign authors and at least authors from three Brazilian states, preferably from outside the Rio-São Paulo axis. We estimate a timeframe of one to two years between the acceptance of the proposal and its publication. It is the responsibility of the organizers to communicate the deadlines and format to those selected to compose the dossier. |
Translation Policy
|
Articles can be submitted in Portuguese, Spanish, or English. Contributions in Portuguese and Spanish will be published in the original language and can also be published in English, depending on the interest and availability of the authors. The English version of articles submitted in Portuguese and Spanish is optional but strongly encouraged to expand the international circulation of Brazilian and Latin American productions. Translations and/or versions will be paid for by the authors, preferably using professionals indicated by the journal. Translations and/or versions made by professionals other than those indicated by the journal must undergo revisions to be carried out by the translators/reviewers registered with Cadernos Pagu. The revisions will be paid for by the authors. |
Authors' Contribution
|
For articles with multiple authors, a description of each author's contribution is mandatory. This description must detail at least the following: a) Participation in discussions and analysis of results; b) role in the revision and approval of the final version of the work; c) contribution to research processes. Following SciELO's recommendations, the journal Cadernos Pagu adopts the CRediT taxonomy as a criterion. This description must be included in the "comments" field of the submission. The content of signed works is the exclusive responsibility of the author(s), including the selection of keywords, as well as grammar and punctuation review. |
Manuscript Format and Preparation
|
Articles must be original and unpublished. Texts submitted to other journals will not be considered for evaluation. Articles must be submitted in Word (.docx) format, with a maximum of 9,000 words or 45,000 characters (including spaces), including the abstract (maximum seven lines), keywords (maximum five), and title, all in Portuguese/Spanish and English. Reviews must have a maximum of 2,500 words. Reviews should not have an abstract. The title of the submission must contain the name of the reviewed work in all caps. The journal Cadernos Pagu has an editorial policy of accepting articles written by a maximum of three authors. Articles with four or more authors will be rejected at the beginning of the submission process. Images and/or figures must be submitted in JPEG or TIFF formats, with a resolution of 300 dpi. The author is responsible for obtaining reproduction rights. Titles of books and journals mentioned in the body of the text should be in italics, as should foreign words. The author's emphasis should be in bold. Footnotes and bibliographic references must comply with the norms adopted by the journal, as per the guidelines and examples below at the time of manuscript submission. |

Footnotes and Citations Footnotes should be numbered consecutively at the end of each page and should only include comments. Citations must follow the NBR 10520:2023 standard: author's last name, year of work, colon, page number (Strathern, 2006:25-26). Works published in the same year should be differentiated by letters of the alphabet (1988a - 1988b). Cadernos Pagu Editorial Workflow
|
EDITORIAL TEAM COMPOSITION:
1. First Evaluation Stage. Involved: Editors-in-Chief; interns and editorial committee: As soon as an article is submitted to the SciELO platform, the Editors-in-Chief and interns verify whether the manuscript adheres to the journal's standards and has potential for publication. If the article does not comply with the journal's rules, the submission is rejected. The explanatory message for the rejection (already standardized) must be clear—rejected for not meeting the journal's standards—and advise the authors to resubmit after making the necessary adjustments. If it is evaluated that the text lacks publication potential, the manuscript is immediately rejected with a brief review signed by the editorial committee. If there are doubts, the article is sent to members of the editorial committee who act as guest editors on the SciELO platform, specifically for the articles they were assigned. When called upon in this first stage, editorial committee members must assess the article's publication potential. If they consider that the manuscript they were assigned does NOT have publication potential, the designated editorial committee members must write a brief review (one paragraph) rejecting the article. If they consider that the text DOES have publication potential, the guest editors must recommend at least three ad hoc PhD-level reviewers. The recommendation should, whenever possible, include the contact email of the recommended reviewers. When assigned to Stage 1 of the Editorial Workflow, the editorial committee members must respond to the request within 10 days. 2. Plagiarism Verification Stage. Involved: Editor and interns Articles submitted to cadernos pagu that pass the first evaluation stage (described above) will be sent to the Turnitin anti-plagiarism system, provided by the Unicamp Library System. If an index equal to or greater than 26% similarity is found with the database provided by the system, excluding quoted citations, the manuscripts will be rejected. Articles with more than 40% similarity to texts by the same author of the article under verification will also be rejected. If rejection of the article is necessary, the Editor-in-Chief will proceed with the rejection process via the SciELO system with a review sent to the author(s). If no plagiarism is found, the Executive Editor will forward the manuscript to the ad hoc reviewers previously recommended in Stage 1. 3. Monitoring Stage. Involved in this stage: Executive Editor, Editor, and Editorial Committee After Stages 1 and 2 of the Editorial Workflow, the articles are sent by the editor to the Executive Editor, who must verify if they are Dossier articles, Resubmissions, or New Submissions (information is in the comments field and metadata of the submissions). In the case of dossier articles, the Executive Editor will designate the dossier organizers as guest editors. In the case of new submissions of articles previously reviewed and rejected with the possibility of resubmission, the Executive Editor must notify the Editors-in-Chief, who will make an editorial decision together with the editorial committee, based on the previously issued blind reviews. 4. Evaluation and Monitoring Stage. Involved in this stage: Executive Editor and interns In this stage, manuscripts will be sent by the Executive Editor and interns to the reviewers indicated by the editor as well as the editorial committee. The Executive Editor's responsibilities are: 4.1 find emails, create registration, verify CVs, and communicate with the designated reviewers. Problems identified by the Executive Editor regarding the indicated reviewers must be reported to the editors. 4.2 monitor the review process by the reviewers. 4.2.1 monitor the response period of the reviewers and send reminders to those who are late. The Editors-in-Chief must be notified after 2 unsuccessful attempts at communication/review with the indicated reviewers. 4.2.2 if designated reviewers refuse the evaluation, the Executive Editor must ask them to recommend other PhD-level reviewers. If the Executive Editor does not receive a response within one week, she must inform the editor, who will designate new reviewers, in conjunction with the editorial committee. 4.2.3 inform the editors when the article has received reviews. 5. Final Evaluation Stage. Involved: Editor and Executive Editor: After the article has received the reviews from the ad hoc reviewers, the editors read the evaluations and issue the Final Editorial Decision, which is placed in the system with a copy to the Executive Editor. It is the responsibility of the Executive Editor to forward the Editorial Decision to the authors. 6. Detailing the Final Evaluation Stage. Involved: Editor and Editor-in-Chief; Executive Editor and BAS 2 scholarship holder 6.1 In case of Approval: if the article has revisions to be made (substantive or not), it will be returned to the authors, who will have 30 days to upload the revised version, with changes highlighted in yellow, to the SciELO platform. The message to the authors will emphasize that the article should not be sent as a new submission, but that the revised text should be returned through the SciELO system within the same submission process. The Executive Editor is responsible for controlling the article return timeframe. Delays in the return, as well as the receipt of the revised versions, must be communicated by the Executive Editor to the editor and co-editor. 6.2 The revised articles returned will be forwarded to the editor and co-editor who will either approve the final version of the manuscript or indicate a second round of evaluation. In this case, the articles will be sent to one of the ad hoc reviewers designated for the first round of review. Articles that are not returned after 30 days should be rejected with prior notice to the authors made by the Executive Editor. 6.3 After the article is approved in the second round, the Executive Editor should ask the authors if they also want to publish the text in English, clarifying that the costs of the translation, done by professionals indicated by the journal, will be paid by the authors. 6.4 Articles accepted for publication will be sent for abstract and resumen review by partner translators and for textual revision by partner reviewers by the Executive Editor. The payment process for these services is the responsibility of the secretary. 6.5 Rejected articles at this stage of the editorial workflow will be archived by the Executive Editor. 7. Layout Stage. Involved: Executive Editor and BAS 2 scholarship holder: Articles ACCEPTED for publication will be sent by the Executive Editor to scholarship holder 2, who will handle the text layout and a new review of the manuscript according to the journal's rules. In this stage, special attention will be given to the Abstract and Bibliographic References. After layout and rule verification by scholarship holder 2, the Executive Editor will perform a second review, considering the layout and compliance with the journal's rules (abstract, bibliographic references, citations; ORCID, among other elements that are not textual revision). 8. Text Revision Stage. Involved: Executive Editor and Editors-in-Chief:
After the layout, the articles must be sent by the Executive Editor to partner reviewers for textual revision. Once revised, the articles are returned to the Executive Editor for the final review reading. With the revision suggestions made by reviewers and the Executive Editor, the article will be returned to the authors who will make the necessary adjustments for the text's publication. 9. Sending Articles to the XML Tagging Company Stage. Involved: Executive Editor: Texts approved by the editor for XML tagging will be sent to the company Cabo Verde by the Executive Editor, who will also be responsible for resolving inconsistencies with the company.
