Brief Background
|
RGO - Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia (ISSN 1981-8637 - online) was first published in 1953 by a group of friends and is one of the oldest journals in the dental field. From 2006 to 2012, its issues were published in print and online, but in 2013, it was published exclusively online. In 2014, all its content was published in English. Since 2019, the journal has been publishing continuously, with a focus on articles that contribute to the study and scientific and technological development of dentistry, speeding up the process. The journal has been published uninterruptedly since its creation and this procedure was maintained with the publication of his articles online in open access in 2006. Faculdade São Leopoldo Mandic publishes it. |

This Journal follows the Open Access model, allowing virtual access without restrictions (Including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open Access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any use to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other legal purpose. |
Open Science Compliance

This journal follows the Gold Open Access model. RGO - Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia adopts a series of practices, such as the open access policy, the code of good practice for editors and the use of social networks to disseminate published work. In line with the alignment of open science, it supports the four dimensions of the movement such as harmonizing the adoption of open access, including the preprint modality and continuous publication in the flow of scientific communication, sharing data, codes, methods and other materials used and resulting from research and transparency in the peer review process of manuscripts, publishing the name(s) of the editor(s) responsible for the review process in the final version. Journals should also offer referees and authors the option of opening up their identities in order to encourage interaction in the manuscript evaluation process. When submitting the manuscript, we ask that you fill in the Open Science Compliance Form, in which the authors share with the journal information about the manuscript in accordance with Open Science communication practices. |
Ethics in Publication

RGO - Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia is committed to ethics and scientific quality in publishing. The journal complies with the standards of ethical behavior expected of all parties involved: authors, who must explicitly declare, individually, any potential financial, direct and/or indirect, and non-financial conflict of interest, etc., as well as any conflict of interest with ad hoc reviewers, reviewers who, if a conflict of interest is identified, will notify the journal and the Editorial Committee will forward the manuscript to another ad hoc reviewer and editors. Articles resulting from research related to human beings and animals are only accepted for submission with a letter of approval from a Research and/or Animal Ethics Committee. Articles with clinical research results must have an identification number in one of the Clinical Trials Registries validated by the criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), whose addresses are available on the ICMJE website. The identification number must be entered at the end of the abstract. The journal also follows the COPE guidelines. |

EDITORIAL POLICY
Preprints
|
Authors who opt for preprints and further or simultaneous submission to the RGO - Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia a) have their manuscripts deposited at Pre Print Server, such as the SciELO Preprints server. It should be informed that the manuscript is deposited at the Preprints server and provide their name and URL at the “Open Science Compliance Form” (a document to the filled out and submitted as a supplementary file to the manuscript). If it is a preprint, the Name of the Preprint server and Preprint DOI are informed. The authors declare the possible conflicts of interest in conducting and communicating research if they exist. |
Peer Review Process
|
RGO - Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia's editorial policy defines the following criteria for the evaluation process: adequacy to the scope of the journal and the journal's technical and formal standards, relevance, content, textual coherence, theoretical and methodological consistency. Manuscripts that fail to comply with any of the rules published here regarding the form of presentation will be summarily returned before they are even submitted for evaluation as to the merit of the work and the suitability of its publication. Pre-analysis: the evaluation is carried out by the editors based on the originality, relevance, and academic quality, scope of the journal and relevance of the manuscript to the field of Dentistry. The article that complies with the rules will be submitted for evaluation of merit and scientific method by at least two rapporteurs of recognized competence in the subject matter, but from institutions other than those of the author(s). In the event of disagreement, the manuscript will be sent for a third evaluation. Manuscripts, which, at the discretion of the Editorial Board or the reviewers, are not considered suitable for publication in RGO - Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia will be returned to the authors definitively. RGO – Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia adopts a double-anonymized peer review process for manuscripts submitted to the journal. However, this process cannot be applied to preprints, as the identities of both authors and reviewers are known. In line with open science practices, the journal offers authors and reviewers the option of opening up the peer review process, with or without identifying their names. Authorization to disclose their names can be given by the authors when submitting the article and by the reviewers when filling in the Open Science Compliance Form. In the event of publication of the evaluations on which the decision to publish the article was based, they may be edited by the journal's editorial board. Approved manuscripts are published with the names of the editors responsible for the evaluation. The reviewers, by means of an opinion written on a ScholarOne form, will recommend one of the following options: approved; request for few changes; request for many revisions; rejected. In any of these cases, the authors will be notified. The final decision on whether to publish the manuscript rests with the editors. If writing problems are detected, the manuscript will be returned to the authors so that the necessary changes can be made. The reworked manuscript must be returned within the specified deadline. Accepted manuscripts: Accepted manuscripts may be returned to the authors for approval of any changes in the editing and standardization process, in accordance with the journal's style. PDF proofs will be sent to the authors to correct the artwork of the manuscript. The proofs must be returned to the journal by the stipulated date (48 hours). Other changes to the original manuscript will not be accepted at this stage. Only corrections to spelling, the exchange of one word or another and numerical data in tables and graphs are allowed. The inclusion and/or exclusion of sentences, paragraphs, images and references will not be accepted. |
Open Data

RGO - Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia is committed to the Research Data Citation Guide and encourages authors to share all data in the manuscript. Authors should make the underlying content available in one data repository or more than one in the case of different types of files and content. Authors can choose to keep these files closed until the article is approved and published. They can also request to keep them closed after publication for reasons that the journal may or may not accept. Check out the list of repositories for depositing research data. To ensure total transparency of the data obtained, RGO - Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia requires authors to declare that, for data not available in public repositories, it must be made available on request.

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy
|
RGO - Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia describes in the flow of manuscripts submitted to the journal steps for authors to attest to their responsibility for the content submitted to the journal and subsequently published, recording each author's contribution at the end of the manuscript. The originality/integrity of the texts is ensured by the journal using plagium software, which checks the percentage of similarity with previous publications. In cases of similarity if the percentage exceeds 30%, the journal contacts the corresponding author for clarification and corrections to the manuscript, and if the requested condition is not met, the manuscript will be withdrawn. If the editors and/or referees have any doubts about the citations contained in the article and their references, checks and confirmations are requested with the corresponding author and, if necessary, with all the authors. Editors and referees must analyze manuscripts impartially and with scientific and ethical rigor in order to preserve the confidentiality of their evaluation, making notes to improve the article and respecting the deadlines set by the journal. RGO - Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia undertakes to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions, as well as notes of concern, if necessary. RGO - Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia will publish errata, corrections or retractions in cases of misconduct as soon as possible, in accordance with SciELO recommendations. |
Policy on Conflict of Interest

Authors must explicitly declare, individually, any potential direct and/or indirect financial and non-financial conflict of interest, etc., as well as any conflict of interest with reviewers. If a conflict of interest on the part of the reviewers is identified, the Editorial Committee will forward the manuscript to another reviewer. Authors should optionally indicate three possible reviewers for the manuscript with their e-mail addresses and the institutions to which they are linked. Optionally, they can indicate three reviewers to whom they would not like their work to be sent. |
Adoption of similarity checking software
|
The RGO - Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia follows the Good Practices Guide for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publications, published by the SciELO Program. This guide is based on the norms and recommendations regarding ethical standards and responsibility in scientific communication established by national and international institutions, among which the following stand out: CSE, EQUATOR Network, ICMJE, CNPq - Report of the CNPq Research Integrity Commission, FAPESP, and the Code of Good Scientific Practices. The SciELO Guide promotes integrity and transparency in the manuscript evaluation process. Furthermore, all manuscripts undergo a technical review for plagiarism analysis using the Plagium software as part of the evaluation process. After this stage, the Editor-in-Chief or Associate Editor reviews the report generated by Plagium and, if any issue is identified, the manuscript is returned to the author for the necessary adaptations or corrections. The maximum similarity index allowed is 30%. Manuscripts that do not meet this requirement will be returned to the corresponding author together with the plagiarism report. Authors must resubmit the revised version with the required changes, and the editor and reviewers will reevaluate the manuscript. |
Adoption of software using Artificial Intelligence resources

The authors are fully responsible for the integrity of the manuscript and must transparently disclose any use of generative artificial intelligence tools in the writing process or data analysis, as these tools cannot be credited as authors. Therefore, manuscripts must include a data availability statement regarding the use of artificial intelligence. Example: The authors acknowledge the use of [Tool Name, e.g., ChatGPT-4] for [purpose, e.g., improving the clarity and flow of the manuscript]. |
Gender and Sex Issues

The editorial team of RGO - Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, should always observe the Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER guidelines. The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, results and interpretation of findings. In addition, RGO - Revista Gaúcha de Odontologia observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board. |

All articles must be submitted electronically via http://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/rgo-scielo. The editors will not consider any other form of submission. At the time of submission, the following must be attached:

Original: contributions aimed at disseminating empirical, experimental or conceptual results of unpublished research, taking into account the relevance of the topic, the scope and the knowledge generated for the research area; Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis: by synthesizing the results of primary studies, whether qualitative and/or quantitative, this type of manuscript must answer a specific question, be limited to 30,000 characters, including spaces, and follow the PRISMA sequence - Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (Moher D, Liberati A, Tetzlaff J, Altman DG, and The PRISMA Group. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses: The PRISMA Statement. PLoS Med 2009; & amp; nbsp; 6: e1000097. Doi: 10.1136/bmj.b2535.). The manuscript should provide detailed information on the process of searching for and retrieving the original studies, the criteria used to select the studies included in the review and provide a summary of the results obtained in the studies reviewed (with or without a meta-analysis approach). There is no limit to the number of references and figures. Tables and figures, if included, should present the characteristics of the studies reviewed, the interventions that were compared and their results, as well as the studies excluded from the review. Abstract
All articles submitted must have an abstract in the original language and in English, with a minimum of 150 words and a maximum of 250 words. For original articles, the abstracts should be structured highlighting the objectives, basic methods adopted, information on the location, population and sample of the research, the most relevant results and conclusions, considering the objectives of the work, and indicating ways of continuing the study. For the other categories, the format of the abstracts should be narrative, but with the same information. Graphical Abstract: Authors are encouraged to prepare a graphical abstract to visually summarize the study design and its main findings, contributing to scientific dissemination. It is a concise and visually engaging presentation that allows rapid understanding of the central message and the scientific relevance of the work. The graphical abstract should clearly and logically represent the essential elements, research question, methodology, main results, and conclusions, prioritizing the key message, with a simple and coherent layout and minimal text, preferably using icons, schemes, or diagrams. Technical specifications: vertical orientation (4:5), dimensions of 1080 × 1350 px (or 91.4 × 114.3 mm), JPEG/PNG/TIFF format, minimum resolution of 300 DPI, and preferably a white background. Introduction It should be concise, define the problem, highlight its importance and knowledge gaps, and include an up-to-date and relevant literature review. It should not be extensive, except in review articles. Methods They must be presented in sufficient detail to allow the observations to be confirmed, including the procedures adopted, universe and sample; measurement instruments and, if applicable, validation method; statistical treatment. With regard to statistical analysis, the authors must demonstrate that the procedures used the methods used were not only appropriate for testing the study's hypotheses, but were also correctly interpreted. The levels of statistical significance (e.g. p<0.05; p<0.01; p<0.001) should be mentioned. Accurately identify all drugs and chemical substances used, including generic names, doses and routes of administration. Scientific terms should be spelled out in full, rather than their corresponding abbreviated symbols. This includes the names of compounds and chemical elements and binomials from microbiological, zoological and botanical nomenclature. The generic names of products should be preferred to their respective trademarks, always followed in parentheses by the name of the manufacturer, the city and the country in which it was manufactured, separated by a comma.
Inform that an Ethics Committee accredited by the National Health Council approved the research and provide the approval number. Results They should be presented with as little discussion or personal interpretation as possible, accompanied by tables and/or appropriate illustrative material when necessary. Do not repeat in the text all the data already presented in illustrations and tables. Statistical data should be subjected to appropriate analysis. Discussion It should adequately and objectively explore the results, discussed in the light of other observations already recorded in the literature. Conclusion Present the relevant conclusions, considering the objectives of the work, and indicate ways of continuing the study. Bibliographical citations will not be accepted in this section. Acknowledgements Acknowledgments can be made, in a paragraph no longer than three lines, to institutions or individuals who have effectively contributed to the work. Annexes They should only be included if they are essential to understanding the text. It will be up to the editors to judge the need for their publication. Abbreviations and acronyms They should be used in a standardized way, restricting themselves only to those conventionally used or sanctioned by usage, accompanied by the meaning, in full, when first quoted in the text. They should not be used in the title or abstract. |
Article Submission Format

The total number of illustrations should not exceed 6. References are limited to 30. Exceptions to this number will be analyzed by the editorial board. |
Digital Assets
|
Illustrations include all types of tables, figures, graphs, drawings, schematics, flowcharts, photographs, maps, organizational charts, diagrams, graphs, charts, portraits, etc. that serve to illustrate the research data. For empirical articles, the place and year of the study must be indicated. Figures may not present the same data as tables or data already described in the text. The total number of figures accepted per article is 6 (six), including all the types mentioned above. Illustrations must be inserted after the References section and sent separately in their original program through the platform at the time of submission. Illustrations must be editable and the following editing programs are accepted: Excel, GraphPrism, SPSS 22, Corel Draw Suite X7, and Word. If you choose to use another program, you must use the standard Frutiger font, size 7, as adopted by the journal in the issue. Images must have a resolution of 600 dpi or higher. Graphs and drawings must be created in vector design programs (Microsoft Excel, CorelDraw, Adobe Illustrator, etc.) with their quantitative parameters in tabular form and with the names of all variables. Graphs presented with grid lines will not be accepted, and elements (bars, circles) must not have volume (3-D). The author is responsible for the quality of the illustrations, which must allow for size reduction without loss of definition, respecting the following measurements: Portrait format: one column (7.5cm); two columns (15cm). Landscape format: one column (22 x 7.5cm); two columns (22 x 15cm). Each illustration must be given a concise title, numbered consecutively and independently with Arabic numerals, according to the order in which the data is mentioned. Tables and charts will have open side borders. For graphs, a title for all axes must be provided. All columns of tables and charts must have headings. The words Figure, Table, and Appendix, which appear in the text, must be written with the first letter capitalized and accompanied by the number to which they refer. Suggested locations for inserting figures and tables should be indicated in the text. Include explanatory notes whenever necessary. If there are any abbreviations or specific highlighting (such as the use of bold, asterisks, etc.), their meaning must be stated in the illustration's footnote. If illustrations published in other bibliographic sources are used, it is mandatory to attach a document attesting to permission for their use and to cite the source. The use of color images is recommended and does not imply publication costs for the author. |
