ABOUT THE JOURNAL

 

Brief Background

 

The Brazilian Journal of Epidemiology (Revista Brasileira de Epidemiologia – EPIDEMIO) is a continuous publication edited by the Brazilian Association of Collective Health (Associação Brasileira de Saúde Coletiva – Abrasco). Its mission is to publish original articles, reviews, and theoretical or methodological essays that contribute to the advancement of knowledge and the development of epidemiology and related fields.

The journal has been published uninterruptedly since 1998, and all articles are currently available in English.

Its official abbreviation is Rev. bras. epidemiol., which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references, and bibliographic legends.

 

 

Open Access

 

EPIDEMIO follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted online access (including the absence of financial barriers) to all published scientific texts. Open access is defined as the condition in which the copyright holder of a scholarly work grants usage rights to third parties through an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, crawl them for indexing, transmit them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose.

 

 

Open Science Compliance

 

The journal’s editorial policy adopts research communication in accordance with the modus operandi of open science. EPIDEMIO follows the Gold Open Access model. All published articles are made freely available for anyone to read, download, and share, without subscription or paywall barriers.

The journal is also aligned with open science practices. Submissions of manuscripts deposited in reliable preprint servers are accepted, regardless of whether the deposition occurred before or during the journal’s peer review process. Authors are encouraged to make data and analytical workflows publicly available whenever possible.

Upon submission of a manuscript to EPIDEMIO, the corresponding author must complete and attach the Open Science compliance form.

 

 

Ethics in Publication

 

EPIDEMIO adheres to the ethical and transparency guidelines for publication set forth in the document Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing, issued by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA), and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME).

 

 

Focus and Scope

 

EPIDEMIO publishes original scientific contributions in the field of epidemiology and related areas of public health. Its objective is to disseminate scientific knowledge that contributes to the understanding of the determinants of the health-disease process, their distribution, and the control of health conditions affecting populations, as well as to promote the improvement of surveillance, prevention, and health promotion practices.

Priority is given to manuscripts that demonstrate originality, innovation, scientific rigor, relevance to public health policies, and impact on the development of epidemiology in Brazil and in other international contexts.

The journal’s target audience includes researchers, faculty members, graduate students, and professionals and managers involved in the production, analysis, and use of epidemiological information to strengthen public health actions.

 

 

Digital Preservation

 

EPIDEMIO follows the standards established by the SciELO Program Digital Preservation Policy, guided by the principles of authenticity, integrity, provenance, reliability, and usability. The preservation processes adopted are transparent and auditable, and all journal volumes are digitally preserved within the SciELO collection.

EDITORIAL POLICY

 

Preprints

 

EPIDEMIO accepts preprints as a means of rapid and broad dissemination of research findings prior to formal publication. Authors may share their preprints in recognized repositories either before or during the journal’s peer review process. The corresponding author must report the name of the server and the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) assigned to the work on the title page at the time of manuscript submission or, subsequently, via email <epidemio_submissao@abrasco.org.br>. Preprints will not be considered prior publication and will not influence the editors’ decision regarding formal publication. EPIDEMIO does not require submission to specific preprint platforms but recommends SciELO Preprints and medRxiv.

 

 

Peer Review Process

 

The peer review process is a critical stage in the editorial workflow; therefore, EPIDEMIO devotes particular care to it. At the same time, the journal recognizes that efficiency in the editorial process is essential for both authors and the scientific community. Accordingly, EPIDEMIO strives to provide evaluations that uphold ethical standards, the highest level of scientific rigor, and timeliness. The process comprises the following stages:

  • Merit assessment by the Editors-in-Chief: All submitted manuscripts are evaluated by the Editors-in-Chief, who assess (a) the study’s alignment with the journal’s scope, (b) its contribution to the advancement of knowledge, (c) its originality, (d) the methodological rigor with which the study was conducted, and (e) the consistency between the conclusions and the results presented.
  • Technical review of manuscripts: The EPIDEMIO executive office verifies whether manuscripts selected by the Editors-in-Chief comply with the journal’s technical formatting requirements. If any inconsistencies are identified, the manuscript is returned to the corresponding author with instructions for revision. Only manuscripts approved in the previous stage, compliant with all formatting criteria, and accompanied by the documents specified in the “Instructions to Authors” proceed to peer review.
  • Peer review: Manuscripts selected by the Editors-in-Chief are assigned to an Associate Editor, who is a researcher with solid and recognized expertise in the manuscript’s subject area. The Associate Editor appoints external reviewers with demonstrated competence to evaluate the study. Each manuscript receives at least two reviews, which are assessed by the Associate Editor to prepare a recommendation for the Editors-in-Chief. EPIDEMIO adopts a double-blind peer review process, in which neither reviewers nor authors are aware of each other’s identities.
  • Editorial decision: Based on the reviewers’ reports and the Associate Editor’s recommendation, the Editors-in-Chief decide whether to (1) reject the manuscript, (2) invite resubmission following revision and response to the reviewers’ comments, or (3) accept the manuscript with or without revisions. In cases 2 and 3, the revised manuscript may be evaluated solely by the editors or may be sent again to ad hoc reviewers. More than one round of review may be required, depending on the editors’ assessments. Failure to comply with the revision deadlines established by the journal may result in the submission being archived.

EPIDEMIO screens all accepted manuscripts using similarity detection systems to identify potential plagiarism and emphasizes to reviewers the importance of strict adherence to ethical standards for peer review as established by the Committee on Publication Ethics. The final published version of each article includes the name of the editor responsible for overseeing the peer review process.

 

 

Open Data

 

Research data comprise content such as numbers, texts, codes, images, audio, and video, among others, that underpin the results presented in articles. Whenever possible, authors are encouraged to make these data publicly available, along with the analytical routines used in data processing and analysis.

Authors should select repositories appropriate to the manuscript’s field of knowledge or multidisciplinary repositories, always adhering to reliable options. A list of possible repositories is available here. EPIDEMIO also highlights SciELO Data, a multidisciplinary repository for the deposit, preservation, and dissemination of research data.

All original research and review manuscripts accepted for publication in EPIDEMIO must include a data availability statement regarding the data used or generated in the study, even if the data are not available for sharing. For other types of manuscripts, this statement is optional. The data availability statement must be included in the Methods section of the manuscript and may follow the examples provided in the “Guide for promoting openness, transparency, and reproducibility in research published by SciELO” Journals (topic 1) and the “Guide for research data curation for editorial teams” (item 2.2). Additionally, any dataset that is made publicly available must be cited in the text, and the corresponding reference included in the appropriate section, as illustrated in the example below:

Fees

 

The English-language version of articles is fully funded by EPIDEMIO. However, the editorial processing fee is the responsibility of the authors. The fee is reviewed periodically and, for manuscripts submitted as of June 3, 2026, is set at R$1,000 for brief communications and R$1,500 for all other article types.

The fee is charged only after manuscript acceptance, and authors must await communication from the journal’s executive office with instructions for payment. Invoices and other supporting documents are provided by the journal for submission to educational and research institutions, funding agencies, and other entities.

Requests for fee reductions may be submitted by authors with appropriate justification, particularly when all authors are affiliated with CAPES graduate programs rated at levels 3 or 4 in any region of Brazil, or when authors are exclusively affiliated with municipal and/or state health departments. EPIDEMIO will assess the eligibility for granting additional subsidies.

 

 

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

 

Research misconduct
EPIDEMIO incorporates strict guidelines into its protocols to prevent and identify potential research misconduct. If any indication of misconduct is identified in a manuscript submitted to the journal, the Editors-in-Chief follow COPE guidelines to address the situation.

Retraction policy
The retraction of an article may be required in cases of unethical conduct, serious errors, inconsistencies, or failures that may significantly affect the validity and credibility of research published in EPIDEMIO. Criteria for retraction include evidence of:

  • Fraud (e.g., data fabrication) that invalidates the study findings;
  • Significant methodological errors that compromise the accuracy or validity of the published research and its conclusions;
  • Ethical violations in the published research;
  • Failure to disclose a significant conflict of interest that may unduly affect the interpretation of the work;
  • Copyright infringement or other serious legal issues;
  • Plagiarism of previously published work;
  • Duplicate publication without proper justification and authorization.

Editors will carefully evaluate each case of potential retraction, conducting a thorough investigation in accordance with the workflows established by COPE guidelines. If retraction is deemed necessary, the journal will publish it on numbered pages in the same section in which the original article appeared, including an explanatory note clearly describing the reason for the retraction.

Post-publication corrections policy
Authors are responsible for carefully reviewing their manuscripts prior to submission. In addition, the journal conducts a rigorous review before publication. However, if minor errors, inaccuracies, or omissions that do not significantly affect the validity or credibility of the article are identified in the published version, post-publication corrections may be requested.

Editors will assess each proposed correction carefully and determine whether it is necessary and whether it should be published. Administrative procedures and the workflow for evaluating post-publication corrections follow the recommendations established by COPE.

 

 

Policy on Conflict of Interest

 

All authors must disclose the presence or absence of conflicts of interest related to the conduct of the study. Conflicts of interest may arise when any author or institution has relationships of any nature with organizations or individuals that could influence the study in question. Examples of conflicts of interest include employment relationships, provision of consulting services, funding or other financial support received, equity ownership in companies, patent holdings, and honoraria. Authors must declare, using the form available at the end of this page, whether a conflict of interest exists and, if so, its nature.

 

 

Adoption of Similarity Software

 

EPIDEMIO uses Crossref Similarity Check (powered by iThenticate) to assess the originality of submitted manuscripts. All accepted articles undergo this screening, and the resulting reports are evaluated by the editorial board. If indications of excessive similarity or plagiarism are identified, the authors are notified, provided with the report generated by the analysis tool, and invited to submit an explanation. Depending on the nature and severity of the issue, the manuscript may be rejected or revised, with the final decision resting with the EPIDEMIO editorial board.

 

 

Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

 

The use of artificial intelligence (AI)-based technologies - including language models, image generation tools, analytical software, or other similar technologies - may be permitted within ethical and copyright boundaries, provided that such use is transparently disclosed in all manuscripts submitted to EPIDEMIO.
Authors must report, in the Methods section, any use of AI tools in the writing process, data analysis, or content generation. The disclosure should include the name of the tool, its version, and the purpose for which it was used in the research or in supporting manuscript preparation.

AI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors of the manuscript and should not be cited as primary references. Full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the text and analyses rests with the authors.

 

 

Gender and Sex Issues

 

Editors, reviewers, and authors of EPIDEMIO must adhere to the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines. The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of recommendations that guide the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, and the reporting and interpretation of findings, as described in the English version (available here) and in the Portuguese version (available here). In addition, EPIDEMIO observes gender equity principles in the composition of its editorial board and reviewer pool.

 

 

Ethics Committee

 

All manuscripts submitted to EPIDEMIO must comply with research ethics recommendations set forth in the Declaration of Helsinki and with the standards established by Brazilian National Health Council Resolutions No. 466/2012 and No. 510/2016. For studies conducted in Brazil, the Research Ethics Committee approving the investigation must be registered with the National Research Ethics Commission (Comissão Nacional de Ética em Pesquisa – CONEP). Studies conducted outside Brazil must have approval from a Research Ethics Committee with the legal authority to review and approve the conduct of the research. Approval by a Research Ethics Committee is waived for studies analyzing aggregated, non-identifiable data, such as those available in official public-domain databases.

All research involving human participants must ensure informed consent from participants or their legal representatives. Participants or their legal representatives must be clearly informed about the study objectives, methods, and potential risks and benefits. They must be provided with the researchers’ contact information and assured of their right to withdraw from the study at any time. The process for obtaining informed consent and its content must be reviewed and approved by a Research Ethics Committee, and such approval must be documented and submitted to EPIDEMIO at the time of manuscript submission.
Submission of a copy of the Research Ethics Committee approval is mandatory upon submission, when applicable.

Clinical trial registration

EPIDEMIO supports the policies of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) regarding clinical trial registration, recognizing the importance of these initiatives for transparency and the international dissemination of open-access information. Accordingly, only clinical research articles that have received an identification number from a clinical trial registry validated according to WHO and ICMJE criteria will be considered for publication. The registration/approval number must be provided on the title page.

Articles published by EPIDEMIO are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution license (CC-BY). This license permits copying, adaptation, remixing, and redistribution of the material in any format or medium, provided that the original work is properly cited and any modifications are clearly indicated. By submitting their manuscripts, authors agree that accepted articles will be made available in open access, without restrictions on commercial or academic use, in accordance with the terms of the adopted license.
Upon publication in EPIDEMIO, authors retain copyright of their work and grant the journal the right of first publication in a scientific journal. EPIDEMIO also encourages authors to self-archive their accepted manuscripts by posting them on personal blogs, institutional repositories, and academic social media platforms, as well as sharing them on personal social media, provided that the full citation to the journal’s official version is included.

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

 

General information

 

EPIDEMIO is a scientific journal published by the Brazilian Association of Collective Health (Associação Brasileira de Saúde Coletiva) and aims to disseminate original articles of high scientific merit that contribute to the advancement of knowledge and the development of Epidemiology and related fields. EPIDEMIO is a bilingual journal. Accordingly, all articles submitted in Portuguese or Spanish and accepted for publication are also published in English.

Articles are published on a continuous basis, and all content is freely available in open access at https://www.scielo.br/rbepid. Manuscripts must be submitted online via the ScholarOne platform, available at https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/rbepid-scielo.

All accepted manuscripts, upon final publication in EPIDEMIO, are assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI).

 

 

Types of Documents Accepted

 

EPIDEMIO accepts manuscripts in the following categories:

  • Original articles. These present novel research findings and must include the sections Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion (IMRD). Manuscripts must not exceed 3,400 words. 
  • Review and meta-analysis articles. Manuscripts must include the sections Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion and are also limited to 3,400 words.
  • Methodological articles, opinion papers, and theoretical essays. These include manuscripts presenting reflections, methodological analyses, or theoretical discussions in the field of epidemiology and related sciences. The abstract must be written in narrative format, and the manuscript may contain up to 3,400 words. These articles, as well as their abstracts, are not required to follow the IMRD structure.
  • Articles describing and analyzing methodological procedures of epidemiological studies. These aim to present the design and development process of epidemiological studies, sharing experiences, challenges, and solutions (maximum of 3,400 words). These articles and their abstracts are not required to follow the IMRD structure.
  • Debate articles. This category is by invitation of the editors. In this format, the article is accompanied by comments and analyses from different authors in the form of consensus/dissent. These manuscripts are not required to follow the IMRD structure and must not exceed 3,400 words.
  • Brief communications. These present concise reports of original research findings, typically with more streamlined analyses and brief discussion. Manuscripts may contain up to 1,000 words and must include, as well as their abstract, the sections Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion. Up to two tables or figures may be included, occupying a maximum of three pages in total. The number of references is limited to ten.
  • Letters to the editor. These consist of readers’ comments on articles published in EPIDEMIO. The texts do not include an abstract and must not exceed 1,000 words.

The word count includes only the Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections (title page, abstract, references, tables, and figures are not included in this count).

Submitted manuscripts must be intended exclusively for EPIDEMIO, and simultaneous submission to another journal is not permitted. The information and concepts presented in the articles, as well as the accuracy of the research content, are the sole responsibility of the author(s).

 

 

Authors' Contribution

 

For the definition of authorship, EPIDEMIO follows the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals established by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Authors must adhere to the ICMJE guidelines, translated into Portuguese in the article by Duarte and Pansani (2015).

The contributions of each author must be specified at the time of manuscript submission. EPIDEMIO adopts CRediT, which includes 14 possible roles describing authors’ contributions to the study. Further information is available on its official website. This information must be provided directly within the manuscript submission platform (ScholarOne) and on the Title Page.

 

 

Manuscript Preparation

 

Authors are initially advised to verify that the manuscript aligns with the scope of EPIDEMIO. Once this relevance has been confirmed, the text should be structured to clearly demonstrate its scientific significance, presenting, in the Introduction, a well-founded and coherent rationale. The Methods section must be clear and sufficiently detailed to ensure understanding and reproducibility of all procedures adopted. The Results should be consistent with the Objectives and Methods, making precise and effective use of textual, tabular, and graphical elements. In the Discussion, an analytical and critical interpretation of the findings is expected, going beyond mere comparison with the existing literature to explore explanatory hypotheses, implications, and potential developments. Study limitations must be thoroughly examined in the Discussion, addressing how they may have influenced the results.

Authors are encouraged to consult and adhere to established reporting guidelines when preparing their manuscripts. For clinical trials, CONSORT are recommended; for observational studies, STROBE; for systematic reviews, PRISMA; and for studies based on secondary data, RECORD. The EQUATOR (Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research) Network portal is recommended for access to additional reporting guidelines and guidance aimed at ensuring quality and transparency in health research.

 

 

Article Submission Format

 

Manuscripts must be submitted to EPIDEMIO through the ScholarOne system, in accordance with the instructions below.

The text of the Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections must be formatted with 1.5 line spacing. The title page, abstract, resumo, references, and tables must be formatted with single line spacing. The entire text must be presented in Times New Roman, font size 12. Line breaks and manual hyphenation should not be used. The complete final file (including title page, sections, references, and illustrations) must be submitted exclusively in DOCX format (Microsoft Word). When first mentioned in the text, abbreviations must be spelled out in full. Abbreviations should not be used in the title or abstract.

Manuscripts are accepted in Portuguese, Spanish, or English. Articles submitted in Portuguese or Spanish must include an abstract in the original language of the text, as well as an abstract in English. Articles submitted in English must include an abstract in the original language of the text, as well as an abstract in Portuguese.

Manuscripts must be submitted as a single file and must follow the structure outlined below:

Title page
The title page (which may comprise one or two pages) must include:

  • the manuscript title in Portuguese (or Spanish) and English (maximum of 25 words for each title);
  • a short title in Portuguese (or Spanish) and English (maximum of 10 words);
  • author details (full names, email addresses, ORCID identifiers, and institutional affiliations including city, state, and country - academic degrees and positions should not be included);
  • identification of the corresponding author, including full mailing address and email;
  • acknowledgments (optional). Individuals who contributed to the study but do not meet authorship criteria may be acknowledged. Institutions that provided financial, logistical, or other forms of support may also be recognized. Authors must submit to EPIDEMIO formal consent (signed form available at the end of this page) from all individuals named in the acknowledgments;
  • funding source(s). The names of funding bodies, contract numbers (if applicable), and a description of their role in the study must be provided. If no funding was received, authors should state that the study did not receive specific funding.
  • Research Ethics Committee approval, including the identification number, when applicable;
  • the name of the preprint server and DOI, if the manuscript has been previously deposited;
  • a description of each author’s individual contributions to the manuscript, according to CRediT (detailed in a subsection below on this page).

Following the title page, and always starting on a new page, the following sections must be presented:

1) Abstract and resumo
The abstract must not exceed 250 words and should be presented in structured format for original articles, brief communications, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses, including the sections: Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. The same requirements apply to the resumo. For other types of manuscripts, abstracts should be narrative (unstructured), while adhering to the same word limit.

Authors must provide a minimum of four and a maximum of six keywords in the language of the manuscript and in English. If the manuscript is written in English, keywords must also be provided in Portuguese. These descriptors must be standardized according to the Health Sciences Descriptors (Descritores em Ciências da Saúde – DeCS) or the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).

Supplementary materials that contribute to a better understanding of the article may be submitted by the authors. These files will be made available online and must be referenced in the main text. However, such material will not be incorporated into the article layout and will be published as received. If the manuscript is accepted for publication, supplementary files will not undergo revision, standardization, formatting, or translation. Authors must submit supplementary material as a single separate file. To do so, they should select “Supplemental File for Review” in the submission platform. The content of these files must not be included at the end of the manuscript and should be sufficiently clear to allow comprehension. Images must be provided in high resolution.

 

 

Digital Assets

 

Tables and figures (graphics, maps, and illustrations) must be included at the end of the manuscript; submission as separate files is not permitted. A page break must be inserted between each item, observing a maximum of seven pages allocated to tables and figures. Tables must not be formatted using the TAB key; instead, the table tool of the word processing software should be used.

Illustrations may have a maximum width of 15 cm in portrait orientation and 24 cm in landscape orientation and must be presented within the required margins (Word setting: “Normal”). They must be formatted in Times New Roman, font size 12, with single line spacing. The use of color figures is encouraged. Photographs must be provided in high resolution; graphics must be submitted in editable format; and tables, equations, charts, and flowcharts must always be submitted in editable files (MS Word or MS Excel), never as images.

 

 

Citations and References

 

In EPIDEMIO, citations and references follow the Vancouver style. Citations must be numbered consecutively according to their first occurrence in the text, using superscript Arabic numerals. The final reference list must follow the same numerical order as cited in the text, regardless of alphabetical order of authors. Titles of books, publishers, and other sources must not be abbreviated. Journal titles should follow the abbreviations established by Index Medicus/Medline. References must include the names of the first six authors, followed by et al. when this number is exceeded. When an article is forthcoming, the journal title, year, and other available details should be indicated, followed by the expression “In press” in parentheses.
