Brief Background
|
Psicologia USP is a continuous publication of the Institute of Psychology of the University of São Paulo (IPUSP). Published since 1990 and included in the SciELO collection since 1997, the journal disseminates articles that reflect the broad spectrum of researchers’ current concerns and the most significant debates taking place at the frontiers of the human and biological sciences. The journal publishes theoretical articles and essays that present originality, conceptual depth, and interpretations of empirical data, which must be grounded in solid theoretical, philosophical, and scientific frameworks. The journal aims to foster dialogue between Psychology and other fields of knowledge, as well as dialogue among theoretical and methodological approaches relevant to the diversity of objects within its own field. |

The journal Psicologia USP adopts the open access model, which allows the copyright holder of an academic work to grant use rights to third parties through an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), providing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose. |
Open Science Compliance

This journal follows the Diamond Open Access model. When submitting an article, authors must be aware of Open Science practices, especially regarding preprints. Preprints make it possible to make articles and other scientific communications available immediately or in parallel with journal evaluation and validation. |
Ethics in Publication

In accordance with our editorial policy, ethical issues related to scientific plagiarism occupy a central place in the editorial process adopted by the journal Psicologia USP. We understand that intellectual production should be authorial and linked to political positions, even if not immediately so, and that any attempts to minimize its importance, including under the appearance of unrestricted scientific neutrality, tend to dissociate the production and dissemination of knowledge from the social purposes they serve. To ensure compliance with these principles, Psicologia USP draws inspiration from the principles of conduct and plagiarism policy developed by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) (https://publicationethics.org) and, since 2017, has adopted specific software, especially SimilarityCheck - Crossref, to verify that there is no textual or content similarity between material submitted for evaluation/publication and other publications, including those by the author(s) themselves. Inspired by the need for constant reflection, avoiding the reflex movement characteristic of automatic repetition of patterns, Psicologia USP takes a stand against the various forms of plagiarism, rejecting any attempts at improper appropriation of the product of another person’s intellectual work. In addition, it considers that even self-plagiarism should be rejected when it serves productivist interests with little commitment to the responsible and necessary constitution and sharing of knowledge. It is recommended that the originality of works submitted for evaluation/publication be considered both in relation to the authorial sources of the content developed and/or cited and in relation to formal aspects of writing. This implies carefully considering the need for effective participation of coauthors in manuscripts with coauthorship, including cases involving advisors and coordinators of academic research. Attention is also recommended with regard to the preparation of works derived from master’s, doctoral, postdoctoral, and similar academic research, so that the author(s) do not incur self-plagiarism. Even in cases in which the manuscript is inspired by or derived from stricto sensu research, it is important that the source of origin of the content, while safeguarding the identity of the author(s) during the evaluation process, be duly indicated and that the text presented be effectively original. |
Focus and Scope

Psicologia USP is a continuous publication of the Institute of Psychology of the University of São Paulo (IPUSP). The journal accepts original national and international articles from the various areas of the social and biological sciences and psychology that present theoretical and methodological consistency and reflections guided by ethical aspects of research and citizenship, such as respect for political minorities and diversity, human rights, and social justice. The journal Psicologia USP accepts proposals for the publication of dossiers. In such cases, the editorial team will evaluate the proposal submitted, which must include the following information: data about the dossier and the authors, their Lattes curricula, justification, and articulation with the journal’s scope (articles with theoretical depth and originality). |
Digital Preservation

The journal Psicologia USP uses the LOCKSS - PKP Preservation Network system as a digital preservation strategy for its content. The journal uses DOI as a digital object identifier, in addition to linking publications to the authors’ ORCID records. This linking is carried out through Crossref. This journal follows the standards defined in the SciELO Program’s Digital Preservation Policy. |

The editorial proposal of the journal Psicologia USP is governed by the universality and diversity inherent to a science such as Psychology and considers the articulation of knowledge and its relationship with other disciplines to be important. Considering these characteristics, the journal publishes articles and essays in which the authors’ reflection and the literature used are essential elements; this reflection implies that the texts should not be merely descriptive, whether of concepts or empirical data. There must be interpretation grounded in theoretical, philosophical, and scientific frameworks. The journal also accepts research reports, provided they contain interpretation of the data based on consolidated theory/theories that make it possible to consider their determinations and tendencies of continuity and/or rupture in relation to the current tendency described. Articles or essays must present originality, expressed by a distinctive approach to the problem, by the depth of theoretical elaboration, and/or by the extension of a theory or method to a new research object. Articles must maintain the theoretical precision of the disciplines that enable the study, but they must not lose sight of communication with readers from other areas. Thus, articles should neither be written only for specialists nor lose specialist precision. Essays or articles may draw on concepts from different disciplines with the aim of relating them, not confusing them. This means using concepts from different areas to better understand the object; because they come from distinct areas, they are rarely directly relatable, and therefore the elements that are not relatable must be emphasized so that the specificity of the concepts is not lost. |
Preprints
|
The journal Psicologia USP accepts the submission of manuscripts previously deposited in academically recognized national or international preprint servers. When submitting an article, authors must be aware of Open Science practices, especially regarding preprints. A preprint enables the immediate availability of articles and other scientific communications before or in parallel with journal evaluation and validation. This practice accelerates the communication of research results, preserves intellectual authorship, and allows authors to receive contributions to improve the work before formal publication. In the case of manuscripts previously deposited in preprint servers, authors must inform the journal of this condition at the time of submission, indicating the corresponding DOI or web address. Prior deposit in a preprint server will not be considered prior publication or simultaneous submission to another journal. These manuscripts will undergo the same editorial process adopted by the journal, including preliminary editorial analysis and peer review. The existence of a preprint version may, however, partially limit the anonymity provided for in the double-blind system. After publication, authors are advised to update the preprint record with the reference and DOI of the final published version. |
Peer Review Process
|
Articles submitted to Psicologia USP must comply with the journal’s editorial policy, follow the recommendations contained in the “Instructions to Authors,” comply with editorial standards, and be intended exclusively for the journal; simultaneous submission to another journal is not permitted. Works that do not meet these recommendations will be rejected. Each work will also undergo editorial analysis before being sent to reviewers. The editors-in-chief and associate editors will assess whether the manuscript meets the journal’s aims and scope, as well as its editorial policy. If it does, the manuscript will be submitted to at least three external reviewers. The authors’ identities and institutional affiliations will not be disclosed to the reviewers, and the authors will likewise not know the reviewers’ identities, characterizing double-blind peer review. This process may result in four possibilities: acceptance, acceptance subject to reformulation, opening of a second round of peer review, or rejection. Specific cases will be resolved by the journal’s Editorial Board. The Editor-in-Chief, assisted by the Associate Editors, is responsible for the final decision on whether or not to publish the original manuscript, as well as for the right to make minor changes to the text during the graphic editing process. The journal will not publish more than one work by the same author, including coauthored works, in the same volume. The final version of the article, published in the journal, contains the name of the editor-in-chief responsible for the evaluation. |
Open Data

The aim is to facilitate the evaluation of the manuscript and, if approved, to contribute to the preservation and reuse of data and information, as well as to the replicability of research. For sharing, authors may use their institutions’ repositories and may also identify relevant and certified repositories: SciELO List of repositories for research data deposit. Alternatively, authors may state that the data will be made available upon direct request to the author, or that all data are contained and discussed in the article. The repository in which the data and information are found, where applicable, must be cited in the text in accordance with the Research Data Citation Guide, preferably in the methodological section, included in the reference list and in the “Research Data Availability” section. |

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

The journal Psicologia USP complies with the main guidelines of international and national organizations that serve as references for principles and good practices on ethics and negligence in scientific publishing, and it is guided by COPE’s main ethics practices, the “SciELO Guide to Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publishing”, and the “Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing” recommended by COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, and WAME. The adoption of these guidelines assists editors in detecting possible fraud and publication malpractice. |
Policy on Conflict of Interest

The journal Psicologia USP follows a rigorous peer review process to ensure the quality and validity of submitted manuscripts. Specialists in the field critically evaluate each work, providing constructive comments to authors. This process ensures originality, relevance, ethics, and contribution to research. Authors are required to disclose any potential conflict of interest that may influence the results, interpretations, or conclusions of the submitted work. Conflicts of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. These conflicts may involve the authors of the work, the reviewers assigned to evaluate the manuscript, or the editors involved in the review and publication process. It is important to provide an explicit statement of any conflict of interest at the time of manuscript submission. If there are no conflicts of interest to declare, authors must explicitly state: “No conflict of interest to declare.” Information on conflicts of interest will be considered confidential, but it is essential to ensure the transparency and integrity of the published research. This information will help reviewers, editors, and readers assess the objectivity and credibility of the submitted work. |

Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

The journal Psicologia USP is based on SciELO’s Guide to the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools and Resources in Research Communication. For more information, consult: Guide to the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools and Resources. Accordingly, the journal permits the use of Artificial Intelligence, provided that ethical aspects and good practices in the use of software are respected and provided that such use does not alter the originality of the text. In accordance with COPE guidelines, the journal Psicologia USP does not allow generative Artificial Intelligence tools to be included as authors of submitted texts, since they do not meet the authorship requirements for scientific productions because they cannot take responsibility for the content of the text. In addition, the journal does not allow excerpts of submitted texts to have been generated by generative Artificial Intelligence, since the authors are fully responsible for the content of their manuscripts. Gender and Sex Issues

The editorial team of Psicologia USP, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines. The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of information about sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and the results and interpretation of findings. In addition, the journal Psicologia USP observes the policy of gender equity in the formation of its editorial board. |

Approval of texts for publication implies the immediate and free-of-charge assignment of publication rights to the journal Psicologia USP, which will have the exclusive right to publish them first. The journal encourages authors to disseminate the PDFs of the final version of their articles on their personal and institutional websites, provided that such dissemination is within the limits of lawful use and mentions the original publication in Psicologia USP. |

The journal Psicologia USP encourages authors to self-archive their accepted manuscripts by publishing them on personal blogs, institutional repositories, and academic social media, as well as by posting them on their personal social media, provided that the full citation to the version on the journal website is included. Author Responsabilities Attention to the ethical, plagiarism, and originality issues already mentioned: authors must ensure that their works are entirely original and, if they use texts or images by others, that these are properly cited. Plagiarism constitutes unethical editorial behavior and is unacceptable. Authorship: authorship of the work must be limited to those who made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. All those who made significant contributions must be listed as coauthors. The lead author must ensure that all appropriate coauthors are included in the article. The lead author must ensure that all coauthors have seen and approved the final version of the manuscript and have agreed to its submission for publication. Multiple, redundant, and simultaneous publication: authors must not publish manuscripts that describe essentially the same content in more than one journal. Types of Documents Accepted

The journal accepts original texts with theoretical depth, valuing critical thinking and interdisciplinarity from the perspective of Psychology. Texts must strictly follow the Open Science policy, research ethics policy, and text formatting standards. Articles may take the form of essays, research reports, and review articles, in accordance with the journal’s scope. The journal accepts contributions submitted in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French. The journal Psicologia USP accepts the submission of preprint articles from academically recognized national and international databases. |

When submitting an article, authors must clearly describe in the cover letter each author’s contribution to the research and writing of the work. This must be done at the time of submission, in the field designated for “Author Contributions.” Two areas of contribution are especially highlighted:

However, once the article is approved and is about to be published in SciELO, all authors must have an ORCID registration. Article Submission Format
|
Manuscript Presentation Format: Psicologia USP follows the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA - 6th edition, 2010) with regard to the presentation of in-text citations and references. All works must comply with the information listed below: Manuscripts must follow the sequence below: 1 - Format: originals must be typed in “.doc” or “.docx” format, Times New Roman font, size 12, A4 paper (21.0 by 29.7 cm), double-spaced, with uniform margins of at least 2.5 cm, and limited to 50,000 (fifty thousand) characters. 2 - Title Page without Identifying Information: must present only the title of the work in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French. 3 - Abstracts: must contain no more than 150 words and be presented in Portuguese, English (abstract), Spanish (resumen), and French (résumé). Avoid citations, acronyms, and abbreviations. The abstract in Portuguese must be inserted in the Abstract field during the submission process (step 1). 4 - Keywords: no more than five keywords must appear immediately below each abstract, in the following versions: Portuguese (Palavras-chave), Spanish (Palabras clave), English (Keywords), and French (Mots-clés). The terms in Portuguese must be selected from the keyword list available in the electronic submission system and translated into English, Spanish, and French. 5 - Text All works cited in the text must comply with the information presented below, both direct quotations (literal transcription of words or excerpts from the work of the author consulted) and indirect citations (transcription of ideas based on the work of the author consulted). Some Latin expressions, such as idem (id.), ibidem (ibid.), and opus citatum (op. cit.), are not used by the journal. The author(s) are responsible for the correct presentation and accuracy of in-text citations. All works mentioned in the text must be listed in the final reference list. 6 - References: must be presented at the end of the article. They must be arranged alphabetically by the author’s last surname and constitute a list headed by the title References. In the case of more than one work by the same author, entries must be arranged in chronological order of publication. Examples will be shown in the “Citations and References” section. 7 - Tables: must be prepared in a separate file and numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals, in the order in which they are cited in the manuscript text. The word “table” must be accompanied by a brief title that makes it possible to understand the data gathered in it. When extracted from other works, the author must mention the full source from which it was taken; in this case, the author must also submit permission for reproduction together with the manuscript submitted for publication. 8 - Figures: these are images, illustrations, photographs, drawings, graphs, etc. They must be submitted in separate files, and authors must indicate, in the text, the places where they should be inserted. They must have good graphic quality and a maximum size of 100 x 150 mm, bearing in mind that they may be reduced; for this reason, we suggest preferably submitting them in TIFF format. If the submitted images have already been published previously, the source and permission for reproduction must be mentioned. Files containing tables and figures must be attached during the online submission process (step 5: File Upload). |

Psicologia USP follows the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA - 7th edition, 2024) with regard to the presentation of in-text citations and references. The author(s) are responsible for the correct presentation and accuracy of in-text citations. All works mentioned in the text must be listed in the final reference list. Citation of Authors in the Text Citations must be prepared using the author-date system. This requires that the author’s surname and the year of publication be inserted in the text, in the appropriate place, according to the information below:
