Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (MIOC) is a multidisciplinary journal on a continuous publication model, dedicated to disseminating original research on microorganisms and their vectors that cause human infections. At the editors' discretion, and exclusively for "thematic article series" published under the auspices of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz and other research units of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), work from other research areas not involving human infections may also be published. The following article types are accepted for publication: research articles, review articles, and perspectives. Review articles and perspectives are accepted by invitation from a member of the editorial board only. All article types undergo external peer review. Acceptance is based on scientific content, the availability of materials, methods, and data to ensure reproducibility, and adherence to legal requirements and best publication practices as recommended by COPE. Submitting an article to MIOC implies that it has not been previously published and is not under consideration for publication in any other scientific journal (except in the form of an abstract or as a preprint). Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz recommends that manuscripts be first submitted to a widely accessible preprint server (e.g., SciELO Preprints, BioRxiv etc). |

MIOC is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and fully adheres to the high standards established in the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors. Approval by an appropriate Ethics Committee is mandatory for any research involving human subjects or any human material. Authors must include in the manuscript the name of the ethics committee and the reference number of the approved project. All authors are required to follow the ICMJE requirements. Clinical trials or randomized clinical trials must have been registered in a primary registry of the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. Studies using animals must comply with the principles of animal welfare in experimental science. Reference should be made to the principles of laboratory animal care or similar regulations and to the approval of the local ethics committee. Provide the license numbers and the name of the Ethics Committee. All authors must ensure that the reported research is not the result of misconduct, such as data fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, or duplication (refer to the Singapore Statement). In the event of confirmed research misconduct, we will issue a retraction notice to correct the scientific record.

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz is a journal specialized in microorganisms and their vectors that cause human infections. This means we accept manuscripts encompassing multidisciplinary approaches and discoveries in the basic aspects of infectious diseases, e.g., fundamental research on prokaryotes, eukaryotes, and/or viruses. Articles must clearly state the main question to be answered, the hypotheses raised, and the contribution made by the study. Priority is given to manuscripts that report new mechanisms and general discoveries related to the biology of human-infectious prokaryotes, eukaryotes, or viruses. Articles reporting innovative diagnostic methods or advanced basic research on these infectious agents are also welcome. |

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz encourages researchers to share their work on preprint servers and to make the corresponding scientific data available in public open-access repositories. The journal also recommends that authors share the materials, reagents, and samples necessary for the proper replication of the results presented in published articles. All preprints undergo the open peer review process. |
Peer Review Process

All manuscripts submitted to MIOC are first evaluated by the editorial board, whose decision is based solely on the content and relevance of the manuscript. This initial screening process results in three possible outcomes:
At any time and at its sole discretion, the editorial board may halt the process if any indication of misconduct is detected. No changes to authorship are permitted after the manuscript has been accepted for publication. The final reviews are open and made available alongside the published work, as described in the journal's instructions. The article will be published in its final version, with the name of the responsible editor, along with their assessments and the names of the reviewers. |

DATA AVAILABILITY The data underlying the manuscript must be openly and publicly available upon request. In the case of research involving human subjects, data must be anonymized. Information regarding genetic sequences reported in the manuscript must have their public database accession numbers mentioned in the manuscript (e.g., GenBank or SciELO). |
Fees

The MIOC journal does not charge any fees (APCs) for published texts, nor for those submitted for evaluation, review, publication, distribution, or download. Publication is completely free and open access. |

Conflicts of interest can be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. Conflicts of interest can occur between authors, reviewers, or editors. All authors, reviewers, and editors must declare any competing interests, financial or non-financial, that may have influenced their manuscript. Authors from pharmaceutical companies or other commercial organizations that sponsor clinical trials must declare these as competing interests at the time of submission and ensure adherence to the Good Publication Practice guidelines for pharmaceutical companies (GPP3). |

Gender and Sex Issues

The editorial team of the MIOC journal, as well as the authors publishing in it, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER . The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of recommendations guiding the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, results, and the interpretation of findings. Furthermore, MIOC observes a gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board. |

Memórias content is freely accessible to readers, and no publication fees are charged to authors. Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz has decided to simplify formatting requirements for submitted manuscripts. Manuscripts may be submitted in any text format, provided the standard subdivisions of a scientific article are followed (e.g., introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, and references). For Review and Perspectives articles, authors may use the sections that best suit the structure and content of their manuscript. All manuscripts must include, in addition to the title and abstract, complete author and institutional details, and acknowledgements for any technical or financial assistance. Authors must declare any conflicts of interest related to their research. This flexible text format will be used for initial analysis and peer review. If the manuscript is accepted, authors will be asked to edit the text according to Memórias’ publication style. DOI – All articles published by the journal receive a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), ensuring unique, persistent, and traceable identification. ORCID – It is strongly recommended that all authors provide their ORCID at the time of submission. ORCID registration is free and ensures correct linkage of scientific output to the respective researchers, facilitating integration with international databases. Authors must declare any competing interests, financial or non-financial, that may have influenced their manuscript. Authors affiliated with pharmaceutical companies or other commercial organizations sponsoring clinical trials must declare these interests as competing at the time of submission and ensure adherence to the Good Publication Practice guidelines for pharmaceutical companies (GPP3). After acceptance, the manuscript must be organized in the following format: The manuscript should be prepared using standard word processing software and printed (12-point font) in double spacing throughout the text, figure captions, and references, with margins of at least 3 cm. Authors' Contribution

A detailed description of each author's individual contribution to the research work must be provided. This description should clearly state the specific role and tasks performed by each contributor. Does the journal use a specific taxonomy? Which one? Yes. It is highly recommended to use the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) to ensure transparency and standardization in attributing the roles performed by each author. The CRediT taxonomy offers a standardized list of 14 roles that accurately reflect each contributor's specific activities. Furthermore, the acknowledgments section should list and give full credit to all individuals who contributed to the research work but do not meet the criteria for authorship, as well as to any funding institutions, where applicable. |

Figures and Tables FIGURES AND TABLES MUST BE UNDERSTANDABLE WITHOUT REFERRING TO THE TEXT Figures: presented in tiff format with a minimum of 300 dpi. Photographs must be sharply focused, well contrasted, and if mounted onto a plate, the figures should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers. Magnification must be indicated by a line or bar in the figure, and referenced, if necessary in the caption (e.g., bar = 1 mm). Plates and line figures should either fit one column (8 cm) or the full width (16.5 cm) of the page and should be shorter than the page length to allow inclusion of the legend. Letters and numbers on figures should be of a legible size upon reduction or printing. A colour photograph or a related illustration is used in social media of the Journal (Twitter, Instagram and Facebook) for brief information about the content of accepted articles. Authors are invited to submit illustrations with legends from their manuscript for dissemination in social media. Tables: should supplement, not duplicate, the text and should be numbered with Roman numerals. A short descriptive title should appear above each table, with any explanations or footnotes (identified with a, b, c, etc.) below. Supplemental material: refers to files which authors supply for publication alongside their article. They should generally be additional pieces to the article that could not be included in the issue, such as appendices, spreadsheets, tables, figures that is impossible to produce within the article. These files will be sent to reviewers for peer review, along with the article’s main files. References must be accurate and in Vancouver format. Only citations that appear in the text should be listed in the references. Unpublished articles, unless accepted for publication, should not be cited. Work accepted for publication should be referred to as "in press," and a letter of acceptance from the journal must be provided. Unpublished data should only be cited in the text as "unpublished observations," and a permission letter from the author is required. References at the end of the manuscript should be listed in numerical order and in the same sequence as they are cited in the text. Article Format

Article Format Reviews: Articles in the "review" format will only be accepted via invitation from the editor or associate editors. Alternative Format: Manuscripts may be submitted following the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" produced by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, also known as the Vancouver Style. Authors will be responsible for modifying the manuscript if it differs from the instructions provided here, should the manuscript be accepted for publication. Authors must also adhere to standardization requirements for any guidelines omitted in these instructions. For clinical trials, it is mandatory to provide the registration number from the REBEC platform (Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry). A statement declaring that the data/results in the manuscript are not plagiarized and have not been published elsewhere is required. WHEN THE ARTICLE IS ACCEPTED FOR PUBLICATION, AUTHORS MUST PROVIDE: Page Charges: There will be no page charges. Proofs: One set of page proofs will be provided to the author for checking the accuracy of the typesetting, to be returned by the specified date. Contributors who do not meet all four authorship criteria should be listed in the Acknowledgments section. Each author must describe their contribution in the manuscript. The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all authors agree to the submission, but all authors are ultimately responsible for the content. Only one author should be designated as the corresponding author, although more than one may be identified as ‘Equal first authors’. The list and order of authors' names must be carefully considered upon submission. Any change (addition, deletion, or rearrangement of authors) during the evaluation process requires a reasonable and strong justification, as well as written agreement from all previous authors. Clinical trials or randomized clinical trials must have been registered in a primary registry of the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. Animal experiments must comply with the principles of animal welfare in experimental science. Reference must be made to the principles of laboratory animal care or similar regulations and to the approval of the local ethics committee. Provide the license numbers and the name of the Ethics Committee. All authors must ensure that the reported research is not the result of misconduct, such as data fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, or duplication. Refer to the Singapore Statement. In the event of confirmed research misconduct, we will issue a retraction notice to correct the scientific record. Please note that an article submitted to MIOC undergoes a similarity check process using the iThenticate plagiarism software to prevent professional plagiarism and other forms of academic misconduct. The accuracy of the material in the manuscript, including bibliographic citations, is the sole responsibility of the authors. We recommend using the following checklists to ensure the reported work was conducted according to best practice standards (Equator Network):
To ensure high quality and reproducibility, all resources used in the work must be accurately identified. We suggest authors use available identifiers for antibodies, organisms, or computational tools from the Resource Identification Initiative. Quantitative studies using PCR must follow the MIQE guidelines. Any microorganism or cell line must be clearly identified, including the source/collection, when and from where it was obtained, and whether it has been authenticated. Human cell lines should have been recently tested for mycoplasma contamination. Evaluation Workflow All manuscripts submitted to MIOC are first evaluated by the editorial board, whose decision is based solely on the content and relevance of the manuscript. This initial screening process results in three actions:
Language Submitted works must be written in English. Any submission written in a language other than English will be returned to the authors. Poor English quality is a major cause of publication delay, and we recommend that non-native English speakers have their manuscripts checked by someone with English as a primary language, preferably a scientist. |
