Educação & Realidade aims to disseminate scientific production in the field of education and to encourage academic debate for the production of new knowledge. It also seeks to expand analytical tools to broaden the horizons of thought and practice in the field of education. The presentation of a plurality of theoretical perspectives is one of the pillars of the editorial policy of Educação & Realidade, which attests to its history of leadership in proposing pressing issues in the field of education. The journal aims to serve as a vehicle not only for established knowledge and research but also for innovative perspectives – both in terms of argumentation and methodology – that present themselves as alternatives to established models.

In its 50 years of existence, Educação & Realidade has fulfilled this mission through a consistent editorial policy focused on the quality of the texts offered to its readers. The journal has fully realized its mission and editorial policy, which can be clearly identified in its history, differentiating it from most other scientific publications in the field of education. Educação & Realidade has always published the best available work both in Brazil and around the world, being responsible (as an initiator or encourager) for introducing central themes into the Brazilian academic discussion in the field of education. An example of this pioneering spirit is the presentation of a thematic issue on constructivism and a critical perspective on this conception, as early as 1993/1994. It is also important to mention the publication of the now-classic text by Joan Scott – “Gender: A Useful Category for Historical Analysis” – in 1990, which, in some way, inaugurates a new understanding of the issue of gender among researchers in Brazil. By fulfilling its mission to challenge the boundaries of knowledge and research in education, Educação & Realidade was also one of the first publications to offer Brazilian readers articles and thematic issues addressing the perspectives of cultural studies and post-structuralist perspectives, when these conceptions did not yet have the prominence they have today in our academic community. Educação & Realidade also has an interdisciplinary vocation, always proposing debate at the boundaries of the field of education with the humanities and social sciences. Lastly, the very initiative of always publishing issues with a thematic identity is a distinctive feature of Educação & Realidade, something that has set a precedent, as seen in the spread of this form of presentation among education journals in Brazil.

The abbreviated title of the journal is Educ. Real., which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references, and bibliographic legends.

This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing virtual access, without restriction (including financial restrictions), to all scientific texts published by the journal.

Our editorial policy follows the communication of research in the modus operandi of Open Science. The attached form must be completed and included as a supplementary document at the time of submission.

Educação & Realidade is a continuously edited publication in a single annual volume (starting from 2022) and publishes articles related to various areas of the field of education and their interfaces with the arts, philosophy, literature, social sciences, and humanities. These articles result from theoretical studies, research, reflections on concrete practices, or current and controversial debates. The published texts, in Portuguese, Spanish, or English, are original scientific articles, except when they are translations of classic texts not available to Brazilian readers or available in preprint servers accepted by the journal, after submission and approval. For an article to be published in Educação & Realidade, it must offer a perspective that contributes to the discussion and advancement of how the subject has been treated in the field of education. Submissions of preprints from the following servers are acceptable: SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv, and medRxiv. The acceptance of preprints from other servers will be reviewed by the journal's editors.

The selection of articles for publication is based on their contribution to education, in line with the journal's editorial policy; the originality of the topic or the treatment given to the subject, the consistency and rigor of the theoretical approach, as well as the quality of the text. The evaluation process for articles submitted to Educação & Realidade follows this flow:

a) Formal Analysis: In this phase, the articles are reviewed by at least two of the editors and are evaluated for their adherence to the general criteria of the journal Educação & Realidade and its editorial line. Articles that meet any of the following criteria are rejected: 1) are experience reports or have a prescriptive character; 2) are solely bibliographic reviews; 3) are notably simple extracts from a dissertation or thesis, without proper adaptation; 4) are presented as research projects or reports; 5) lack theoretical or methodological consistency in the described research; 6) do not provide a sufficiently in-depth analysis of the theme they propose to discuss; 7) do not have education as the central axis of the discussion; 8) contain errors in writing and text structure; 9) are merely descriptive and do not provide an analysis of the problem addressed; 10) do not follow the usual format of scientific articles in education journals; 11) do not comply with the submission norms of the journal Educação & Realidade (formatting, citations, references, etc.); 12) do not present results, formulations, or conclusions that indicate advances in the proposed theme; 13) do not present empirical elements or sufficiently developed arguments that support the conclusions. Such works will be returned to the authors. Works that do not fall into any of the above categories will be considered suitable for the next phase.

b) Peer Review for Merit: In this second phase, the editorial board of the journal Educação & Realidade sends the article, without author identification, to at least two reviewers from the specific thematic area of the work (members of the editorial board or ad hoc invitees), from two different states or countries. For the selection of reviewers and thematic areas, the classifications of the CNPq areas table and the set of information accessible on the LATTES platform are considered. Reviewers can fully accept the article, accept it with requested revisions, or reject the article. Any of these outcomes is justified by a descriptive review. When both reviewers reject the work, the article is returned to the author. When both reviewers accept the work, it proceeds to the next phase. Finally, when one or both reviewers request revisions, the work is returned to the author, requesting that they consider the reviews and revise the article within thirty days. When the author resubmits the revised text, according to the reviewers' suggestions, it is re-evaluated and proceeds to the final phase.

c) Revision and Adaptation of the Work to the Norms of Educação & Realidade: Once accepted for publication, the work undergoes a language revision and normalization. The work is sent to the author with suggestions for corrections and adaptations, to be finally submitted by the editorial board for publication. To increase the visibility and international access to the published articles, the English version of articles written in Portuguese or Spanish and accepted for publication must be obligatorily provided by the authors after final acceptance and request by the journal's team. Similarly, starting from February 2025, articles written in English and approved for publication must include a translated version in Portuguese or Spanish.

Authors are requested to share all contents (data, program codes, and other materials) related to the manuscript text, before or at the time of publication. Exceptions are allowed in cases of legal and ethical issues.

The goal is to facilitate the evaluation of the manuscript and, if approved, to contribute to the preservation and reuse of data and information, as well as to the replicability of research.

For sharing, the author can use the repository of their institution, as well as identify relevant and certified repositories: List of repositories for research data deposit SciELO.

It can be declared that the data will be made available upon direct request to the author or that all data are contained in the article.

The repository where the data and information are located, if applicable, must be cited in the text according to the Guide for citing research data, in addition to being included in the reference list and in the "Research Data Availability" section

Educação & Realidade does not charge fees for the submission and publication of articles.

Educação & Realidade is committed to practices that respect ethical conduct, following the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publishing.

Ethical Principles and Procedures to Avoid Misconduct in Scientific Production

1) Responsibilities of the Authors

• Authors are responsible for the content of their articles, as well as for the copyright of images, videos, and any textual or supplementary elements in their articles.
• Authors agree to work voluntarily in the peer review process for this journal in the future.
• Authors declare that they have made significant contributions to the research presented in their articles, when applicable.
• Authors are obligated to provide the journal with retractions or corrections of any errors.
• Authors must ensure that their text is original work and should not submit the same text to more than one journal.
• If the article was written based on research that presents real risks to the participants, it is mandatory to present an opinion from the Ethics Committee of the researcher's institution.

2)  Evaluation Process

• All journal content is subject to peer review using the double-blind peer review method.
• Peer review is the process of obtaining opinions on individual manuscripts from expert reviewers in the field. This process is clearly described on our website.
• Reviews should be as objective as possible and sufficiently substantiated to allow for the improvement of the research and the evaluated text.
• Reviewers should not have conflicts of interest and declare this in writing in the journal's system when conducting a review.
• Reviewers should always draw attention to texts or excerpts that have already been published and have not been properly cited.
• All evaluated articles are treated confidentially.
• The journal understands that any form of plagiarism is unacceptable and uses anti-plagiarism review tools.
• The final decision on whether or not to publish a text rests with the editors. Whenever a text has academic quality and meets the criteria established by the journal, it is sent for double-blind peer review by at least two reviewers.
• The only evaluation criteria are the academic merit of the text and the improvement of the quality of knowledge, with no discrimination against authors for any reason.
• Editors are not permitted to use information contained in articles under review without the explicit consent of the authors.
• Editors are available to answer any ethical questions related to a submission.

3) Ethics in Publishing

• Compliance with good ethical practices in research is the sole responsibility of the author.
• Editors make considerable efforts to avoid and prevent the publication of articles in which research misconduct has occurred.
• In no case do we encourage misconduct or allow it to happen.
• Any allegations of improper research conduct are immediately investigated.
• The journal publishes errata to correct articles when necessary, based on the Guide for Publishing Errata
• The journal may consider publishing an addendum, following the guidelines in the Guide for the Registration, Marking, and Publishing of Addenda
• The journal is always willing to publish corrections, clarifications, right of reply, retractions, and apologies when necessary, following the Guide for the Registration, Marking, and Publishing of Retractions

4) Copyright and Universal Access

• The licenses used by the journal are described on this website.
• All articles in full content are free of charge and are made available in their entirety to any reader without the need for registration or password.

Conflicts of interest can be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting a manuscript, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial or other conflicts of interest that may have influenced the work. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author(s) must report it in a separate signed document and attach it to the submission platform. Regarding the identification of misconduct, which includes plagiarism, self-plagiarism, and the republishing of articles, as well as data falsification, Educação & Realidade uses the Turnitin Similarity Check system. This system is employed after the article evaluation and before its publication. If a significant degree of similarity with a previously published text is detected, the author will be contacted for adjustments and justifications. The article may be rejected if it fails to meet the originality requirement.

Educação & Realidade understands that only humans can be authors. Therefore, any use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) must be recorded in the processes and aligned with ethical standards and best practices in research communication. Hiding the use and content of AI is an ethical failure that violates the principles of transparency and honesty in research. Educação & Realidade follows the Guide for the use of Artificial Intelligence tools and resources in research communication in the SciELO Network.

The editorial team of Educação & Realidade, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that direct the reporting of information on sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and the results and interpretation of findings. Additionally, Educação & Realidade observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board.

Authors must attach, as a supplementary document when necessary, a statement of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research.

Authors of articles published by Educação & Realidade retain the copyright of their works, licensing them under the Creative Commons Attribution BY 4.0 license. This license allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, provided that the original work is correctly cited. In return, the authors grant the journal the right of first publication under the same license.

All content of Educação & Realidade, except where otherwise specified, is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.

Educação & Realidade encourages authors to self-archive their accepted manuscripts by publishing them on personal blogs, institutional repositories, and academic social media, as well as posting them on their personal social media, provided that the full citation to the version on the journal's website is included.

Educação & Realidade accepts for publication articles that focus their discussion on the field of Education, resulting from theoretical studies, empirical research, analyses of concrete practices, or updated and controversial debates in the area. The texts, in Portuguese, Spanish, or English, must be unpublished or available on preprint servers accepted by the journal. Submissions of preprints from the following servers are acceptable: SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv and medRxiv. The acceptance of preprints from other servers will be analyzed by the journal's editors. Research reports must be transformed into articles for publication in a scientific journal, according to the standards of Educação & Realidade.

The selection of articles for publication is based on their contribution to Education, in line with the journal's editorial policy. Originality of the topic or the treatment given to the subject, consistency, and rigor in both the methodological approach and theoretical framework, and the quality of the text are also fundamental.

Manuscripts should be submitted through the journal's website in docx or doc (Word) format or a compatible format. Authors' names should not appear in the body of the article. Please also remove any sections that could compromise the anonymity of the evaluation and any identifying data in the document properties.

All author identification data must be entered directly into the appropriate fields on the article registration page and the author(s) page in the article submission system, including the full name(s) of the author(s), postal address, telephone number, and email for reader contact, along with a brief curriculum description (maximum of three lines) and institutional affiliation. These details should not be included in the Word (or compatible) file submitted through the portal.

Manuscripts must be accompanied by a supplementary document or a comment to the editor stating the availability of the data used and generated in the research underlying the texts, according to one of the three options below:

• URL address of the dataset;
• Statement that all data are available in the text;
• indication that the data should be requested from the corresponding author. This option is only applicable in cases where there are ethical, security, or financial restrictions.

After the manuscript is approved, Educação & Realidade may request the corresponding authors to inform the contributions of each author to the work, according to the postulate in CREDiT

The final version of the approved article will be published with the name of the editor or editors responsible for the manuscript evaluation process.

Texts, in docx or doc (Word) format or compatible, should be justified, typed in 1.5 spacing, in Times New Roman font, size 12. Quotations with more than three lines should always be in a new paragraph, in size 10, without quotation marks, and indented 4 cm to the left. Articles should have between 35,000 and 60,000 characters (including spaces), formatted for A4 paper, including bibliographic references, notes, and tables. They must be accompanied by a cover sheet which must include an abstract or resumen and an abstract (between 550 and 750 characters, including spaces) and keywords (maximum 5) in Portuguese or Spanish and keywords in English. Titles should have a maximum of 150 characters, including spaces, and should also be translated into English. The cover sheet, as well as the entire content of the article, must not contain any author identification.

Some items to be observed when typing the texts: double quotation marks only for direct quotations in the body of the text; italics for words with unconventional usage and for foreign words, neologisms, and titles of works and publications.

We request that the above norms be carefully followed; otherwise, the submitted texts will not be considered for evaluation.

Tables, charts, figures, illustrations, maps, diagrams, and other digital assets present in the documents should be included in the body of the article, indicating the title and source.

Citations should follow the format (Author's Surname, year) or (Author's Surname, year, p. xx). Different titles by the same author, published in the same year, should be differentiated by adding a letter after the date (Author's Surname, Year a, p. xx).

Bibliographic references should include exclusively the authors and texts cited in the work and be presented at the end of the text in alphabetical order, following the ABNT standards. When applicable, always indicate the translator's name after the title of the book or article.

At the time of submission, three types of supplementary documents may be included: Open Science Compliance Form, Statement of availability of the data used and generated in the research, and Ethics Committee Approval Form, etc.

Inform the sources of support for the work, including the names of sponsors, contract number (if any), along with explanations about the role of these sources.

All approved works, upon their final publication in Educação & Realidade, will receive a Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
