Brief Background
|
The Anuário Antropológico (AA) is a journal of the Graduate Program in Social Anthropology at the University of Brasília (PPGAS/UnB), published continuously and aligned with the open science framework and the principles of IDEIA – Impact, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility. The journal is rated as A2 by QUALIS/CAPES. Its mission is to communicate ethnographic and ethnological knowledge to foster academic debate and the epistemological advancement of anthropology. Founded in 1976 by Professor Roberto Cardoso de Oliveira, it is one of the oldest anthropology journals in Brazil. The first issue was published in 1977, five years after the creation of the PPGAS/UnB. Although its headquarters have always been at the University of Brasília (UnB), the Anuário Antropológico was designed as a national journal with international reach. Since its inception, it has received contributions from colleagues from other countries, mainly from Latin America. The journal’s editorial structure and dynamics follow its regulations, which were updated by the PPGAS/UnB faculty on July 17, 2023. This is an open-access journal. All its content is freely available to users, who may read, download, copy, distribute, print, search for, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without needing prior permission from the editor or the author. |
Open Access
|
This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing virtual access without restrictions (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY 4.0), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search for, or link to the full texts of articles, harvest them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose. |
Open Science Compliance
|
The Anuário Antropológico provides free and immediate access to its content, complying with the principles of free and democratized open access to scientific knowledge according to the Diamond Open Access model. To maximize the dissemination and use of published material, Anuário Antropológico adopts the Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY 4.0. Thus, copyright remains with the authors, permitting free and immediate access to the work and allowing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, index them, use them in software, or employ them for any other legal purpose, including commercial use, as long as proper credit is given. Regardless of the nature of the manuscript, the data and information underlying the analyses and research presented must be duly cited, referenced, and declared. Authors should deposit these materials in reliable data repositories—such as SciELO Data, for example—or publish, at the end of the text, a statement regarding the availability of the information supporting the analyses performed. Anuário Antropológico also encourages the publication of manuscripts as preprints on public platforms such as SciELO Preprints, ScoArXiv, HAL, Zenodo to foster open debate prior to formal publication. In line with Open Science practices, the journal offers authors and reviewers the option of an open peer review process, with or without identification of their names. Permission for disclosure of names can be granted by the authors during article submission and by reviewers via the Open Science Compliance Form. If the reviews that supported the editorial decision are published, they may be edited by the journal’s editorial staff. The contributions of section editors are properly credited in the published articles. Reviewers receive formal statements regarding the reviews provided.

Editors, authors, and reviewers must adhere to the highest standards of ethics throughout the research process, in the production and handling of data, and in the writing, evaluation, and publication of submitted manuscripts. Preprints
|
Manuscripts that have been previously deposited in recognized preprint servers, such as SciELO Preprints, ScoArXiv, HAL, Zenodo, and university repositories (e.g., the UnB repository), are accepted for publication. Manuscripts previously deposited as preprints will undergo the same peer review process as other articles voluntarily submitted to the journal, with no distinction in the evaluation criteria. |
Peer Review Process
|
Submissions are received on a rolling basis through the Periódicos UnB platform at https://periodicos.unb.br/index.php/anuarioantropologico/about/submissions. Suitability for publication is evaluated by the Editorial Committee (regarding alignment with the journal’s scope and editorial line) and by ad hoc reviewers (regarding content and quality of the contributions) in an open science framework, which allows for the identification of authors and reviewers if authorized by all parties involved. The name of the section editor responsible for handling the manuscript is published in the final version of the article. Contributions will be evaluated in three stages: 1. screening by the Editorial Committee, using anti-plagiarism software; 2. double peer review, in an open science regime, if authorized. If not authorized, publication proposals will be evaluated under double anonymity. In the case of controversy and disparate opinions, the text will be sent to a third reviewer; 3. revision of the final version of the article, if approved in peer review, to check the changes made, taking into account the evaluations received. The Editorial Board of the Anuário Antropológico will hold the responsibility for authorizing publications, and the editor responsible for the final evaluation will be identified alongside the published piece. Editors are also allowed to suggest changes to proposals at the screening stage as a condition for the texts to proceed to peer review. There are four (04) possible outcomes of the evaluation that contributions to the AA undergo: a) Publish as is; b) Publish considering the suggestions indicated in the report; c) Not publish as is, but substantially reformulate, according to recommended changes and resubmit to the Anuário Antropológico; d) Reject entirely. Appendices to articles may include the reviews prepared by the reviewers on the first version of the text, if authorized by their authors.
The publication of all pieces in the journal is authorized by the members of its editorial committee.

Open Data
|
Regardless of the nature of the manuscript, the data and information underlying the analyses and research presented must be properly cited, referenced, and disclosed. Authors should deposit these materials in reliable data repositories—such as SciELO Data, for example—or provide, at the end of the text, a statement regarding the availability of the information supporting the analyses carried out. |
Fees

The AA does not charge publication fees. |
Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy
|
Active measures will be taken regarding any ethical issues, negligence, or misconduct that arise during the review process or after publication. Whenever necessary, such matters and concerns will be investigated in accordance with the flowcharts recommended by COPE and SciELO. Anuário Antropológico follows SciELO’s guidelines for: In cases of alleged or confirmed scientific misconduct, fraudulent publication, or plagiarism, the publishing institution (PPGAS/UnB), in close collaboration with the Editorial Committee of AA, will take all appropriate measures to clarify the situation. This includes the immediate publication of an erratum, a clarification, or, in more serious cases, the retraction of the affected work.
The publishing institution, together with the editorial team, will take all necessary steps to identify and prevent the publication of material involving research misconduct and, under no circumstances, will it encourage such behavior or knowingly allow it to occur.

Policy on Conflict of Interest
|
Authors must disclose any conflicts of interest that could influence the results or their interpretation in the material as early as possible (usually indicated at the time of submission and/or by including a statement within the manuscript itself). Examples of possible conflicts of interest include financial benefits such as honoraria, scholarships or other funding, participation in events, affiliations, employment, consultancy, stock ownership or other equity interests, and testimony or patents from paid experts, as well as non-financial relationships such as personal or professional relationships and affiliations. All sources of financial support must be disclosed (including grant and funding numbers, where applicable). Conflicts of interest may occur among authors, reviewers, or editors, and it is essential that all parties involved declare any potential conflicts to ensure transparency and integrity in the editorial process. |
Adoption of Similarity Software
|
Currently, Anuário Antropológico uses the CopySpider anti-plagiarism software. The library services at the University of Brasília are in the process of selecting a new tool, and the journal will adopt this new solution as soon as a decision is made. All submitted manuscripts are checked for plagiarism prior to the initial screening conducted by the editorial team, that is, before proceeding to external review. Manuscripts identified as plagiarized will be rejected, and authors may be subject to sanctions established by the Editorial Committee.
Regarding duplicate publication, redundant publication, corrections, and retractions, Anuário Antropológico only accepts original articles—that is, manuscripts that have not been previously published and are not under consideration by other journals, including those in other languages. Articles submitted to Anuário Antropológico may not be submitted to other journals while under review. Duplicate publication refers to submitting the same work to two or more journals.
Redundant publication refers to the unjustified division of the results of a single study into multiple articles, resulting in unnecessarily repetitive publications. Both practices may lead to the rejection of the manuscript.

Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources
|
The use and type of use of Generative Artificial Intelligence must be explicitly disclosed in submissions for evaluation, when applicable. As stated in the SciELO Guidelines for the Use of AI Tools and Resources in Research Communication, “concealing the use and content of AI is an ethical violation that breaches the principles of transparency and honesty in research.” Authors are therefore encouraged to mention any and all types of AI tools used in the preparation of their manuscript. Gender and Sex Issues
|
The editorial team of Anuário Antropológico, as well as the authors publishing in the journal, must always adhere to the Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER guidelines. The SAGER Guidelines comprise a set of recommendations for reporting information on sex and gender in study design, data analysis, results, and interpretation of findings. In addition, Anuário Antropológico follows a gender equity policy in the composition of its editorial board. |

The various components that make up the Anuário Antropológico are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) license, and their metadata under the CCO (public domain) license. The author is fully responsible for the content of the article and retains all copyright for future publications, and, where possible, should include a reference to the original publication in the journal.
The author retains the copyright to the published article, while the journal holds the right of first publication.

Authors' Contribution
|
The author is fully responsible for the content of the article and retains all copyright for future publications, and, where possible, should include a reference to the original publication in the journal.
In the case of co-authored articles, each author’s contribution must be recorded at the end of the text, indicating the main type of participation in the development of the article. For example, one author may have carried out most of the fieldwork, while another focused more on data analysis and manuscript writing. Alternatively, all authors may have contributed equally to the construction of the text. In any case, we request a brief description (up to 4 lines) of how the work was divided among the co-authors. We suggest considering the credit specification system proposed by the CRediT Taxonomy.

Manuscript Preparation
|
Despite the valuable impact of various ethnographic experiences on the development of particular anthropological narratives, the editors strongly recommend that authors include the following communication elements in submissions to AA: introduction and conclusion sections. In the introduction, it is highly recommended that the author present to readers the subject of the text, its central argument, and the sections that compose it (the structure of the text), concisely previewing what each section will address. In the conclusion, it is recommended to restate the central argument and summarize the steps taken throughout the text to demonstrate it. |
Article Submission Format
|
When submitting the proposal, the author must provide their full name, email, ORCID number, and link to their Lattes CV, as well as the full name, city, and country of their institutional affiliation (including institution name + college/department, city, state, and country). They should also include a brief abstract, biography, and keywords (minimum 3 and maximum 5) in the original language of the work and in English. Institutional and program names should be presented in full and in the original language of the institution, or in English when the original wording is not in Latin. Information about funding supporting the research on which the article is based should also be provided. Where applicable, approval by the ethics committee should be submitted along with the manuscript.
All approved works, upon publication in the Anuário Antropológico, will receive a Digital Object Identifier (DOI).

Digital Assets
|
Charts, graphs, figures and photos should be presented on separate sheets, numbered and labelled correctly, with their place in the text indicated. Images must be sent in .jpg, .gif or .png format, with 1.2M and 300dpi. In the case of images for photographic essays, they must be named sequentially according to the order of exhibition as follows: surname_author's name_01 etc. The author must also send a proposal for the layout of the essay. |
Citations and References
|
All texts and essays must be formatted in the Chicago style, using Calibri font size 12 and 1.5 line spacing. Quotations longer than three lines should be highlighted in the text with a left indent. Footnotes should be in Calibri font size 10 with single line spacing (1.0). Abstracts must be up to 1,430 characters. |
