The Time Frame thesis (Marco Temporal) and the evils of Indigenism in Brazil Ramos, Alcida Rita

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT The Time Frame thesis, which for years has haunted indigenous peoples in Brazil, proposes that the right to permanent and exclusive usufruct of traditional lands only applies to indigenous peoples who actually occupied them in 1988, ironically, the year when the Federal Constitution was proclaimed. Land demarcations, concluded or in progress, were withheld and quarrels between Congress and the Supreme Court exposed. Arbitrary and perverse, its blatant purpose is to benefit the usual invaders of Indigenous Lands. In December 2025, the Supreme Court ruled the thesis unconstitutional, but left a trail of restraining rules so unfavorable to the Indians as to reduce victory to defeat.

From land to water: Geraizeiros towards Commons (MG) Carcelle, Sébastien Joseph Alexis

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT This article uses the theoretical debate on the commons to shed light on the recent history of the Geraizeiros in the municipality of Rio Pardo de Minas (MG), a history that has been shaped by the introduction of eucalyptus plantations. This semi-arid region in the north of the state of Minas Gerais is characterised by plateaus (known as “chapadas”) and valleys (“veredas”), which were once abundant sources of water. Prior to the 1960s, the chapada lands were used communally as open pastures for extensive cattle rearing within the native Cerrado vegetation. However, the destruction of this biome by the State for the establishment of eucalyptus monoculture plantations put an end to this common good and profoundly altered the lives of the Geraizeiros. They organised themselves in defence of their territory, and today they collectively manage water, a scarce resource in the veredas, providing an illustration of Elinor Ostrom’s proposal regarding commons governance. Drawing on bibliographic sources and ethnographic research, this article offers a renewed interpretation of this history. While the formation of communities and associations - as well as the Geraizeiro Movement - was encouraged by external actors, the thesis defended in this article is that the culture of the common good has been rooted in Geraizeiro identity since the old days of the “soltas”, and has been continually renewed through religious communities.

Sociodiversity of the Cerrado: Collective identities, territories, environmental conservation, and social reproduction Costa Filho, Aderval Almada, Emmanuel Duarte

Abstract in English:

Abstract: In this text, we present an overview of the sociobiodiversity of the Cerrado, highlighting the territorialization of traditional peoples and communities as a fundamental factor for environmental conservation and the maintenance of the foundations of life within the biome. Since the advent of the Green Revolution, the expansion of agribusiness and silviculture has intensified the degradation of the Cerrado and, consequently, increased the conflicts and threats faced by Indigenous, Quilombola, and other traditional territories. These peoples and communities struggle against invisibility, land pressure, criminalization, and violence. Despite the legal frameworks that recognize their territorial and cultural rights, administrative slowness weakens their claims in the face of the advance of agribusiness and large-scale projects. In this article, we analyze processes of identity self-affirmation grounded in ethnic-racial, environmental, labor, and territorial-use criteria, emphasizing the diversity of strategies related to the defense of traditional territories. The state recognition of this diversity of identities and the regularization of their territories are increasingly urgent for the protection and safeguarding of the Cerrado’s sociobiodiversity, upon which both these communities and society as a whole depend.

Territory in dispute: Geraizeiro resistance in the Arroz de Cima community and the expansion of agribusiness in the Bahian Cerrado Andrade, Haiana Ferreira de

Abstract in English:

Abstract The article analyzes the social struggles and resistance of the Arroz de Cima Community, located in the Cerrado ecosystem of state of Bahia, in the municipality of Formosa do Rio Preto, Bahia, in the face of agribusiness expansion in Western Bahia, Northeast region of Brazil. It questions the hegemonic narrative that portrays the region as a place of development, while simultaneously denouncing the violence and expropriations suffered by communities organized around productive and cultural practices adapted to the Cerrado, which reinforce their collective identity and territorial bonds. The study highlights the history of land conflicts that began in the 1980s, marked by legal disputes, land grabbing, and violence. The research adopts a qualitative approach, combining literature review, documentary research, and interviews, with emphasis on collective memories and the symbolic dimensions of the conflict. Finally, it interprets the territory as a field of struggles, where resistance, identity, and autonomy confront the predatory logic of agrarian capital.

Fencing off commons for the energy expansion: Conflicts over lithium extraction in Cornwall (UK), Jequitinhonha (BR) and Barroso (PT) Faria, Francisco Calafate Barbosa, Rômulo Soares

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT This article examines how the global push for “green” energy expansion produces new enclosures and conflicts in territories historically organised around common land use. Focusing on lithium extraction in Covas do Barroso (Portugal), Cornwall (UK), and the Jequitinhonha Valley (Brazil), it shows how the so-called energy transition manifests as energy expansion: the simultaneous growth of energy production, consumption, and territorial occupation under the legitimating discourse of decarbonisation. Drawing on multi-sited ethnographic research, it traces how intensive and wasteful lithium mining transforms local ecologies and social relations, converting communal and post-industrial commons into fenced extraction zones. In Portugal, the servidão administrativa opens centuries-old baldios to corporate access; in Cornwall, the “mining renaissance” threatens post-industrial leisure commons; in Brazil, open-pit operations turn living ground into “sterile” residue. Across these cases, the article argues that lithium’s framing as essential to decarbonisation conceals a colonial continuity - displacing peripheral populations in the name of planetary salvation - and calls for defending the commons as spaces for alternative transitions.

Between Acting and Walking: Expressions of The Territorialities “Geraizeirinhas” Souza, Jonielson Ribeiro de

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT This work presents reflections on the relationships of Geraizeiras children and adolescents with the territories of their communities, based on theatrical practices and other expressive forms. This is the result of research conducted between 2019 and 2023 in the communities of Água Boa 2, Baixa Grande, and Moreira in the municipality of Rio Pardo de Minas (northern Minas Gerais state). These communities have been experiencing socio-environmental conflicts for over two decades, since their common-use spaces were invaded by eucalyptus monoculture starting in the 1970s. Combining ethnography and theater, with fieldwork in which participant observation was added to theater initiation workshops in each community, the research sought to understand how the young inhabitants express their relationships with their places of residence, in the midst of a struggle for territorial rights. The analyses show that there are diverse forms and means of expression of the “geraizeirinhas” territorialities and that proactive experiences, such as theater workshops, can contribute to bringing out the children’s perceptions of living spaces, generating possibilities for strengthening their ties with the organizational processes of their communities.

The Living and the Dead in the Folias of the Minas Gerais Backlands Chaves, Wagner Neves Diniz Álvares, Lucas Parreira

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT The article explores the interactions between the living and the dead in the context of folias from northern Minas Gerais, with particular interest in describing and analyzing how such relationships are constructed and experienced through sound and listening. Based on extended fieldwork with folias and local communities in northern Minas Gerais, as well as an ethnographic sensitivity to “listening to stories of listening,” the text presents two scenarios in which the living and the dead maintain relationships through songs and other sonic expressions. In the first case, drawing on the life story and devotion of Dona Santa to Saint Joseph, the foliões of Taboquinha, in the municipality of São Francisco, visit cemeteries and graves and sing to the dead. In the second, it is the dead who “intervene” and sing along with the living during the folias of Ribanceira and Buritizinhos, communities belonging to the municipality of São Romão. Based on the ethnographic description of these two cases, the article suggests that in the context of the folias, the living and the dead (life and death) are inseparable entities and planes, intertwined with different sensibilities, sounds, and ways of listening.

Victimization and empowerment: Narratives of victims and survivors in the governance of domestic violence in Timor-Leste Santos Filho, Miguel Antonio dos

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT This article examines the governance of domestic violence in contemporary Timor-Leste, focusing on the management of the categories victim and survivor, which are respectively central to the judicialization of domestic violence and to the implementation of women’s economic empowerment policies. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted between 2015 and 2024 - including participant observation, interviews with legal system actors, shelter coordinators, NGO professionals, and interviews and focus groups discussions with women engaged in legal aid and microfinance programs - the article analyzes how these categories function as political and moral devices. I argue that while the category victim sustains and reifies judicialization through well-established processes of victimization, the category survivor activates a neoliberal and meritocratic grammar that reframes women as autonomous subjects and self-entrepreneurs. Finally, I suggest that both categories rely on individualizing rationalities that obscure the relational dimensions of domestic violence, even as their coexistence remains central to contemporary strategies for governing domestic violence in Timor-Leste.

Bodies in transit and sanitary crises: reconfiguring Brazilian male sex work in Portugal amidst COVID-19 and Mpox Passamani, Guilherme R.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT This article investigates the reconfigurations of transnational male sex work, focusing on Brazilian men working as escorts in Portugal, under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 Mpox outbreak. Based on a multi-sited ethnographic research conducted between 2020 and 2023, the study analyzes how these two health crises intertwined, exacerbating pre-existing economic, social, and health vulnerabilities. The analysis of COVID-19 reveals the destabilization of the sex work market due to containment measures and the heavy psychosocial cost for escorts. The arrival of the Mpox outbreak added a layer of complexity, reinforcing stigmas and the need to re-evaluate care practices. The article demonstrates how global crises materialize in individual and collective experiences, highlighting the agency of these men in negotiating health and work in a scenario of a dual public health emergency.

“(Indigenous) Women Who Love Football”: Play, Sociability, and Political Participation in São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Amazonas, Brazil Ferraz, Adilce J. Veiga Medaets, Chantal Altmann, Helena

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT: While there is a well-established body of studies on women’s football, its practice in Indigenous contexts still lacks sustained anthropological attention. The first women’s football team in the city of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (Upper Rio Negro region, Brazilian Amazon - known as the most indigenous Brazilian city) was created in 1991, and since then, the number of teams has grown alongside a gradual conquest of spaces for training, participation in championships, and women in leadership roles. The study traces the history of women’s football in the Upper Rio Negro region. The methodology consisted of identifying and interviewing the women who created the first female football teams. The results show that they learned football in the streets, alongside boys, and in the face of restrictions from families and male players. Competitive experience in the sport strengthened the women as a group, fostering bonds and generating a sense of belonging. In adulthood, a notable effort toward institutionalizing the practice can be observed, along with the pursuit of occupying public spaces and engaging in the regional football politics. Thus, the history of women’s football in the Rio Negro region also reveals dimensions of broader political transformations in the region, where women strive to occupy positions of power and public visibility, despite predominantly adverse reactions from their social environment.

“The forest rises, dust lifts, stones fall, and the earth trembles”: the destruction of an afroindigenous temple in Chapada Diamantina National Park Zanardi, Paula Pflüger

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT: This article analyzes the controversy triggered by an enforcement operation carried out by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) in 2024 in Chapada Diamantina National Park (Bahia, Brazil), which resulted in the demolition of an afroindigenous temple, the destruction of homes, and the removal of a caboclo settlement. Based on the analysis of administrative proceedings and sustained ethnographic engagement with jarê communities in Lençóis, I argue that the episode reveals a conflict between different conceptions of this landscape’s composition. The operation disregarded the ties among bodies, spirits, care practices, and territorialized relations that constitute the ways of life of jarê communities, while the violence of the act was subsequently rendered invisible through the reconstruction process conducted by ICMBio. I argue that the reparation promoted by the state operated through an environmental and religious simplification that reduced the temple to its built materiality, erasing the cosmopolitical relations that constitute this place.

Much-more-than-human worlds in Spain: An essay on fourteen (new) reasons to listen to what animals have to say Fanaro, Luisa Amador

Due to their ethnographic and theoretical-methodological specificities, the fourteen chapters that make up the compendium engage in dialogue and contribute to the most recent discussions in the field of Human-Animal Studies (HAS), and have, I suggest, a minimum common denominator: all of them, each in their own way, reveal the porosity of the (still) thorny nature/culture dichotomy and its derivative pairs.

“Jurema is a sacred tree where Jesus prayed”: Photographs of the intersections between Christianity and afro-indigenous Ferreira, Leandro Tiago

Abstract in English:

Abstract The visual essay presented is a photo-ethnographic unfolding of the experience woven between the researcher and the Terreiro T’Aziry Ladè, based on the religiosity of the Sacred Jurema. Through photographic records, sensitive aspects are listed that reverberate the incidence of elements that reiterate the intersections between Christianity and afro-indigenous religions, particularly in the traditional Festa dos Pretos e Pretas Velhas (Festival of Old Black Men and Women). Blurring the boundaries between sacred elements of different origins, Jurema positions itself in ambiguity, like a religion that borders on modern/colonial binomials that stipulate divisions between what can be considered Christian or profane. In this context, tangible characteristics of the materiality of ancestral sacredness feature at the center of the Terreiro, from the gestures to the aesthetics that permeate the rites of this celebration of ancestry.
