ABSTRACT Isak Dinesen, quoted by Hannah Arendt, asserts that all misfortunes can be borne when a story is told about them. This assertion will serve as the pole star of this article which, based on the conceptual framework of Arendt, Walter Benjamin and Beatriz Sarlo, will seek to explain the relationship between narrative and the construction of collective memory and how this relationship brings at its core a political duty: to keep alive the memory of dark times that elapsed during states of exception, such as totalitarianism and civil-military dictatorships that devastated some Latin American countries. I will use the work of Primo Levi, If this is a man and Assis Brasil, Os que bebem como os cães, to exemplify the potency that exists within the literary genre, the focus of my reflections: the narrative. Thus, I will try to explain how the memorial narratives collaborate in the redemocratization process, by exposing the atrocious actions committed against Democratic States of Law. In this argumentative fringe, we ask ourselves: what is the locus that the narrative occupies within the Brazilian public space in the post-military civil dictatorship period? Were the narratives able to contribute to the realization of the imperative: “so that it is not forgotten, so that it never happens again”?

ABSTRACT I argue that the Hegelian model of agency is constitutively embodied. To this end, I challenge justificationist and intentionalist interpretations, such as those found in Brandom, Pinkard and Pippin, according to which free actions are defined exclusively by the capacity to give reasons for acting in a certain way. Such interpretations are based on a normative exceptionality of spirit as opposed to nature. Unlike these authors, I propose that Hegel thinks of the way we act freely in continuity with the way non-human animals act in their environments. To do this, I recover his theory of organisms, as formulated in the Philosophy of Nature. I suggest that Hegel writes about animal organisms in general, human and non-human, as normatively constituted. A way of writing that, inspired by the pragmatist turn in Hegelian studies, promoted above all by those commentators, I will call pragmatist. As I will defend it, this normativity is actualized in the embodied way in which animal organisms in general are teleologically oriented. Rather than a normative exceptionality, I propose that human organisms are better specified, in Hegel, by the singular way in which they enact universal norms.

ABSTRACT Nancy Fraser argues, drawing on the young Marx, that the task of social critique is to promote the self-clarification of the desires and struggles of our age. Although this definition is central to her work, Fraser only discusses what she means by it in a few texts. In this paper, I aim to contribute to elucidating its meaning, albeit through an indirect strategy. Mobilizing some papers written between the 1980s and the early 1990s, I present her critiques of symbolicism. First, the symbolicism of what she calls psychoanalytic feminism or Lacanism, represented here mainly by the work of Julia Kristeva. Then, the symbolicism of what she calls deconstructivist feminism, represented here mainly by the work of Drucilla Cornell. In both cases, as I will try to show, the core of Fraser’s argument is that, although distinct, the theories of discourse developed by these authors place great emphasis on the symbolic and the dynamics of its subversion or transformation, which they seek to understand through an analysis of ahistorical constants: the psychic life or the logic of deconstruction. In so doing, she claims, they move away from the kind of historical analysis required by social critique, such as the self-clarification of the desires and struggles of our age. An escape from the world that Fraser seeks to reject, highlighting the relationship between social critique and the diagnosis of the times.

DIVERSIDADE MORAL E PROPRIEDADES MORAIS CAUSALMENTE PODEROSAS NO REALISMO DE CORNELL Ruffo, Ísis Esteves

ABSTRACT There are two important objections against moral realism: The objection of moral disagreement and the objection of the explanatory irrelevance of moral facts. Both objections aim to reject objective moral facts, so any realistic position must consider these objections. The ways in which these objections are constructed as well as the possible responses that can be given to them vary depending on the kind of moral realism in question. For this text, I consider how the two objections can be mobilized against Cornell’s naturalist realism, as well as the responses available.

ABSTRACT In this paper I demonstrate how the conceptions of thymós and hesychía, described respectively in Republic IV and IX, reveal the importance of the definition of tó metaxý. In the first section, I analyze the epistemological status of Θνμός, conceived as an intermediate function of the soul insofar as it can be recognized as occupying an intermediate position between the rational and appetitive functions of the cognitive soul. In the second section, I examine the strategic notion of ἡσνϰία, a psychological condition that allows for the cessation of both pleasure and pain. In both the case of thymós and that of hesychía, Plato develops the notion of metaxý as a conceptual device that either delivers a mistaken judgement concerning sensations or improves calculative moral decision-making as reason’s recommendation. My aim in this paper is to scrutinize the inextricable interplay between pleasure and cognition, ἡδονή e επιστήμη, in order to demonstrate the epistemological relevance of tó metaxý. To this end, the paper discusses the tripartite theory of soul put forward in Republic IV, and the phenomenology of constitutions in Republic VIII-IX.

ABSTRACT The article examines the conditions of feasibility, stability, and applicability of John Rawls’ justice as fairness. Drawing on Pablo Gilabert, it argues that feasibility should be conceived dynamically, incorporating the potential for institutional transformation and collective mobilization, without reducing normative theory to immediate practical constraints. It then analyzes stability as a criterion of normative validity, reconstructing Rawls’ shift from an approach grounded in the congruence between the right and the good to the model of overlapping consensus in contexts of reasonable pluralism. Stability is interpreted as the support of justice “for the right reasons,” namely, through the recognition of its legitimacy by free and equal citizens. Finally, the article discusses the applicability of ideal theory, emphasizing the role of the difference principle as a regulative standard both in well-ordered societies and in contexts of injustice. Charles Mills’s critique of Rawlsian theory as inapplicable to racially structured societies is contrasted with Samuel Freeman’s defense, which interprets ideal theory as a methodological device indispensable for evaluating injustices and guiding reforms. The article concludes that justice as fairness can be conceived as feasible, stable, and applicable, providing normative guidance even in societies marked by structural inequalities.
