DREAM OF CYNICS: THE PHENOMENON OF DREAMS IN ANCIENT CYNICISM (BASED ON THE DIOGENES LAERTIUS’ LIVES)

Starting from Book VI of Diogenes Laertius’ Lives of eminent philosophers and mobilizing other sources of the Cynic corpus, this study aims to comment on the way in which the Cynic philosophers (especially Diogenes of Sinope) dealt with the phenomenon of dreaming and its appropriations, notably in relation to one of the fundamental principles attributed to this doctrine, namely the ‘use of representations’ (χρῆσις φαντασιῶν: cf. Epictetus III 24, 67-69).
