Open-access Technological innovation for sustainable development as a catalyst for Brazil’s future

The current socio-environmental challenges demand a radical rethinking of the policies that govern scientific research to foster technological innovation driving sustainable development. In Brazil, where regional inequalities, resource limitations, and urgent environmental concerns converge (Pinho & Fotiadis 2021), establishing a robust system of scientific governance integrating universities, funding agencies, government, and the private sector is not only timely but essential. As the world prepares to revisit and strengthen its commitments to the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals at the upcoming COP-30, the country can emerge as a leader by demonstrating how innovative solutions in renewable energy, water resource management, urban mobility, cleaner production process and sustainable agriculture can accelerate the transition toward climate resilience.

Overcoming these structural barriers demands a multifaceted approach that begins with the implementation of targeted investment programs. Although, Brazil has undertaken a series of measures aiming at strengthening the country’s innovation capacity (De Negri 2021), current funding models often fall short of addressing the specific needs of research aimed at sustainable outcomes. To address this, governments and funding agencies must allocate dedicated resources that incentivize projects focused on sustainable technologies, ensuring that these investments reach areas with high potential yet limited access to capital. In addition, intersectoral policies that promote collaboration among academia, industry, and civil society should be developed to create platforms where experts can work together. A broad basis of fundings can help to maintain collaboration, especially in times of budgetary constraints (McManus et al. 2020).

Another critical issue is the fragmentation of research efforts across different regions and sectors, which leads to isolated initiatives with limited impact. When research is conducted in silos, groundbreaking ideas in one field or region may not find the necessary support to transition from the laboratory to practical use. By consolidating efforts and building comprehensive networks, stakeholders can bridge the gap between fundamental research and practical applications. This could be achieved through the establishment of regional innovation hubs and cross-sector consortia that facilitate resource sharing, mutual mentorship, and coordinated development programs, effectively aligning disparate research efforts into a cohesive strategy that drives sustainable development.

Furthermore, the effectiveness of scientific endeavors is often diminished by evaluation criteria emphasizing traditional academic outputs over real-world impact. Without the inclusion of social relevance and environmental impact in the evaluation process (de Rezende et al. 2025), many innovations that could contribute meaningfully to societal challenges remain underfunded or overlooked, so redefining research project assessment metrics to incorporate these factors is essential (Agência FAPESP 2022). This shift would encourage researchers to design projects that contribute to the academic body of knowledge and offer tangible benefits in terms of economic growth, social equity, and environmental preservation.

Collectively, these proposed strategies can transform Brazil’s scientific landscape and serve as a model for other nations. By fostering a dynamic, integrated, and collaborative research environment, we can convert current socio-environmental challenges into avenues for inclusive and balanced growth, ensuring a resilient future for forthcoming generations. The urgency of this task cannot be overstated, as today’s scientific community is responsible for devising solutions that are as progressive as they are sustainable, laying the foundation for transformative change in our society for inclusive and balanced growth, and ensuring a resilient future for forthcoming generations.
