Sociologias is a continuous influx publication of the Graduate Program in Sociology (PPGS) at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).

The Journal Sociologias has been developed in response to the increasing importance of spaces to disseminate knowledge produced at the University. This initiative aims not only to circulate information and research within the scientific community but also to inform Society, establishing communication channels.

In a world increasingly interconnected by new information and communication Technologies produced in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, located in Brazil Southern Cone, the proposal to publish Sociologias arose from a dual imperative, on one hand, to enable the dissemination of research and debate within the sicentific community of the Social Sciences; on the other hand doing so according to the demandings of a social and scientific context that imposes new criteria of editorial quality, graphic presentation and distribution.

Sociologias was created to replace Cadernos de Sociologia, which, for ten years, had fulfilled the role of publishing the papers of professors and researchers of UFRGS. The journal Cadernos de Sociologia was, however, outdated in relation to the demands of the social and scientific context, both in terms of academic criteria and development agencies, and in respect to technical and graphic new requirements. Therefore, a new editorial and graphic project has been developed, aiming at making Sociologias a journal better suited to the the current conditions and requirements of the field.

This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal.

Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of academic papers grants usage rights to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing immediate free access to the work, and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distritbute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, track them for indexing, pass them on as data to software or use them for any other legal purpose.

In line with open sciences practices, Sociologias discloses the names of the Editors responsible at the moment of the publication of the article. This practice reinforces the commitment of the journal to the integrity of the editorial process and provides editors with knowledge for their crucial role of maintaining the quality standards of the publication. Reviewers’ opinions might be published alongside the article if the reviewers so agree. Besides, the reviewers may choose to reveal their identities after the manuscript has been approved, if they wish to.

Adherence to these practices is voluntary and seeks to promote an open and transparent evaluative environment, respecting the confidentiality preferences of the people involved. To this end, we recommend using the Formulário sobre conformidade com a Ciência Aberta (Open Science Compliance Form).

Sociologias agrees with the principles and good practices of ethics and negligence in scientific publications. COPE and Manual de Boas Práticas para o Fortalecimento da Ética na Publicação Científica do SciELO ( SciELO Good Practice Guidelines for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publishing) are recommended.

Sociologias has a pluralistic orientation and publishes original papers from all Fields of sociology, emphasizing innovative theoretical and methodological approaches that interact with Latin American social reality. The journal is open to contributions from the social sciences that engage with effective dialogue with Sociology literature, introducing new perspectives to understand the social phenomena.

The journal is open to collaborators from all continents and accepts submissions of theoretical nature and applied sociology, in Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French, which meet high standards of theoretical and methodological rigor.

Its editorial project consists of two main parts: thematic dossiers, resulting from an annual call for dossier proposals, and a diversified section covering scientific articles, theoretical-methodological update articles, reviews, research notes, and interviews.
The journal has a diverse scientific advisory board, including academics with relevant publications from different regions of Brazil and other countries.

This journal follows the standards defined in the Política de Preservação Digital do Programa SciELO (SciELO Program Digital Preservation Policy.).

The authors may submit manuscripts to SciELO Preprints before or simultaneously with the submission to Sociologias. The preprint does not undergo formal peer review on the open-access preprint server operated by SciELO Program. In such cases, the manuscript is uploaded automatically if it meets the basic selection standards or if is approved after basic evaluation by the editors in the manuscript’s area, and it will receive a DOI assigned by SCiELO Preprints.

Sociologias may also submit manuscripts that have already been approved in the final stages of evaluation, editing, and/or publishing. In the latter case, the manuscript is uploaded automatically, and it will have the same DOI as the final article.
When sending a submission previously published in a preprint server, the authors should always:

Although the standard evaluation process of the journal is the double-blind peer review system, in which evaluators and authors do not know each other's identities, for submissions previously published in preprint servers, reviewers will have access to the authors’ identities through the work available in the preprint repositories.

Sociologias accepts unpublished and original papers (papers that have not been published in other journals or as book chapters) in the form of articles, research communications, expanded abstracts, and reviews in social sciences of academic and social relevance and high quality in terms of methodological and theoretical rigor.

Acceptance of papers for peer review is conditional upon strict compliance with the Submission Guidelines and assessment of the manuscript suitability for editorial policy of Sociologias.

At least one of the authors of the submitted manuscript must have hold a PhD degree. Manuscripts co-authored by up to four people are accepted. At least of the the authors must hold a PhD degree. The first author must hold at least a Master’s degree. For reviews, authorship by Master's degree holders is allowed.

Co-authored manuscripts must have an additional/supplementary document with details of each author’s contibution to the manuscript.

The evaluation process consists of three elimination stages:

First stage

Within 3 to 7 days of submission, the completeness of the authorship data (complete registration form, including ORCID and biographical data) and the manuscript compliance with the journal standards (see Guidelines for Authors) will be evaluated. As long as the manuscripts comply with the high standards, the submission will not be archived and the authors will not be notified.

Authors are entirely responsible for the content of their manuscripts, and for ensuring their contributions are original and unpublised. As a policy to prevent plagiarism, the journal reserves the right to check all the manuscripts submitted to publishing using a plagiarism detection software. If any plagiarism is identified, the article will be rejected.

Second stage

Manuscripts in compliance with the submission guidelines undergo a second stage evalution by the editorial team to check their suitability to the policies and scope of the journal. In case they do not meet the criteria of textual and clarity correcteness, theoretical and methodological rigor, and potencial contribution to the advancement of sociologial knowledge, the submission will be rejected and the journal will send the editorial decision along with a statement explaining the reasons. This stage may take up to 45 days.

Third stage

Manuscripts that meet the editorial policy will be submitted to double-blind review by a least two highly experienced ad hoc reviewers in the area of knowledge in question. In case of divergent evaluations, a third review will be required.

Papers will be evaluated according to the following criteria: (i) clarity of writing, (ii) quality and rigor of the arguments presented, (iii) validity of the data presented, (iv) timeliness and importance of the article to the discussion of problems in the research area involved, and currency and adequacy of the paper references.

The editor will make a decision on the submission based on the completed evaluations. The decision on the submission may be to decline, require revision, submit to a new round of evaluations, or accept the article. This stage may last for up to four months, due to the large amount of submissions received by Sociologias and, consequently, the large volume of articles under evaluation.

Sociologias encourages the deposit and sharing of research data that supports the publishing of the article. Research data refers to the results of observations or experiments that validate the research findings.

In order to enable data reproducibility and reuse, Sociologias recommends depositing and sharing research projects, partial research reports, softwares, codes, models, algorithms, protocols, operating procedures, workflow methodologies, filed notebooks, diaries, questionnaires, audio or video tapes, methods and other useful materials related to the project in a public data repository.

A data repository is a database where digital content and resources that can be researched and recovered for later use are stored. There are several Brazilian repositories where research data can be deposited. You may find information on how to deposite, share and use research data and other relevant materials by consulting plataforms such as SciELO Data, FAIRsharing and Re3Data.

In order that authors can disclose their research data and access form, Sociologias provides a Data Availabity session, presented in all articles published from 2025 onwards, so that this information can be shared transparently.

Sociologias waives the Article Processing Charge (APC) for authors from countries in Africa, South America, Central America, or Mexico. For all other authors, the journal charges a fee of USD 350.00 (three hundred fifty United States dollars) for each accepted article.

Payment of the fee is required only after the authors receive confirmation that their article has been approved for publication. This APC payment policy is valid for all submissions made on or after October 15, 2025.

Sociologias follows strict ethical standards in research. The journal does not tolerate any form of scientific misconduct, such as plagiarism, data counterfeit or fabrication, and will take the appropriate action in cases of suspected or proven misconduct.

Erratum: in the envent of errors identified after the publication of an article, Sociologias will publish an erratum with the necessary corrections, in order to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the sicentific information disclosed. Guia de Errata (Erratum Guide) is recommended.

Retraction: In exceptional circumstances, such as the identification of serious errors or scientific misconduct that compromisse the validity of the conclusions of an article, Sociologias may retract the work. The retraction will be properly communicated to readers and indexers, and the article will remain available online with a note indicating the retraction and the reasons for it. Guia de retratação (Retraction guide) is recommended.

Conflicts of Interest may be personal, comercial, political, academic or financial. They may happen when the interests of authors, reviewers, or editors may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts.

When submiting the manuscript, authors are responsible for acknowledging and revealing any financial conflicts or conflicts of any other nature that may have influenced the work. If there is even a potential conflict of interest, authors must disclose it in a separate signed document attached to the submission plataform. Sociologias uses Ithenticate system to identify texts similarities that may be considered plagiarism. It should be noted that the author are solely responsible for the content of the manuscripts . Articles are checked at the time of the submission of the manuscript. If there is evidence of significant similarity between the manuscript and other documents, authors are advised to review the manuscript and resubmit it.

Sociologias adopts the ICMJE recommendation regarding the use of artificial inteligence (AI) assisted technology in the preparations of manuscripts.

Authors must publicize the use of AI-assisted technology in their submissions, detailing in the cover letter and the appropriate sections of the manuscript how and where these tools were used. AI tools must not be listed as authors, as they must not be held responsible for the accuracy, integrity and originality of the manuscript, which are factors intrinsically linked to authorship. Human authors are responsible for reviewing and editing the AI-generated content to ensure its accuracy and impartiality. In addition, authors must ensure there is no plagiarism and provide proper attribution for all cited material.

The editorial team of Sociologias, in addition to the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER. SAGER guidelines cover a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of information on sex and gender in the study design, data analysis, and the results and interpretation of the findings. In addition, Sociologias observes the gender equity policy in the formation of the editorial board.

Authors must attach a statement of the approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the reseach, if applicable.

Authors of articles published by Sociologias retain the copyright on their work, licensing it under Creative Commons Attribution BY 4.0 license, which allows the articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, provided that the original work is correctly cited. In Exchange, authors grant the journal the right of the first publication under Licença CC BY 4.0 (CC BY 4.0 License).

Author’s Responsibility

Authors of articles publlished by Sociologias retain the copyrights on their work, licensing it under Creative Commons Attribution license, which allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, provided that the original work is correctly cited.

Sociologias encourages Authors to self-archive their accepted manuscripts by publishing them on personal blogs, institutional repositories, and academic social media, as well as posting them on their personal social media, provided that a complete citation to the website version of the journal is included.

Sociologias accepts unpubished papers in the form of articles, reviews, and research communications in the social sciences that present inovative and relevant contributions in their subject area and demonstrate textual clarity and accuracy, theoretical and methodological rigor in their construction, and potencial to advance sociological knowledge in the specific area in focus. Contributions may be submitted in Portuguese, Spanish, French or English.

Artices submitted in English or French, once approved in the evaluation process, may be translated into Portuguese and published in both languages. Authors are responsible for the translation, and they may choose their translastors freely or from a list suggested by the journal.

Manuscripts must be intended exclusively for Sociologias, that is, they must not be submitted simultaneously to any other journal and must remain so until the end of the evaluation process. The journal will not be responsible for analyses and considerations issued by authors.

Before submitting their manuscripts, authors must ensure they have complied with all guidelines, including the exclusion of any elements that prevent blind evaluation, such as selfreferences, aknowledgements, and identification in the document properties. They must also ensure the manuscript has undergone a careful gramatical review. Manuscripts with writings issues/problems will be returned without undergoing stages of scope evaluation.

It is important to note that all articles published by Sociologias will be assigned the same DOI identification.

This section accepts original and unpublished texts in the form of articles that present relevant and inovative contributions to the area of sociology, with the potential to stimulate academic debate, and demonstrate theoretical and methodogical rigor in their construction. Preference will be given to works resulting from empirical research and/or related to that address current social issues and topics that have not yet been sufficiently debated in the social sciences.

Papers envolving only bibliographical review will no be accepted.

Contributions may be submitted in Portuguese, Spanish, French or English.

This section accepts reviews of works recently published in Brazil (within the last two years). Reviews of papers written in foreign languages that have not and yet been published in Portuguese are also accepted, provided they address topics relevant to the social sciences.

Submissions either in Portuguese or Spanish are accepted.

This section accepts transcriptions of the interviews conducted with academics/intellectuals whose work offers relevant contribution to the area of sociology, provided the interview presentation text discusses the interviewees’ work and other author’s work with which his/her work dialogues, including references.
Contributions may be submitted in Portuguese, Spanish, French ou English.

Dossie

Section with dossie selected through an annual international call for papers on specific topics.

Author’s contribution must be detailed on the title page and follow CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) taxonomy standard. All contributors who qualify as authors of the article must have their contribution described using this taxonomy. Contributions that do not qualify for authorship must be acknowledged in the acknowledgements section.

Manuscript submissions must comply with the criteria detailed below in order to qualify for editorial and peer review.

For submissions to the Articles and Interviews sections, at least one of the authors must hold a PhD degree and, in the case of co-authorship, the first author mus hold at least a Master’s degree. Manuscripts with a maximum of four authors are accepted.
For submissions to the Reviews section, auhtors must have at least a Masters degree.

Submission Form

Submissions for publication in Sociologias must be made exclusively through the journal’s page on the SEER/UFRGS platform.

For submission of/To submit the manuscripts to any section of the journal, authors must access Sociologias page on the SEER platform with their login and password. But in case they do not have any of them, they must complete the registration process, including their ORCID registration and mini-biography (including education and role at their affiliated the institution). Afterwards, they must begin the five-step submission process, following guidelines on the plataform.

The manuscript must be submitted in A4 format, Times New Roman 12 font, 1.5 spacing, 1.25 cm first line indentation, and 3 cm top and left margins, and 2 cm bottom and right margins. The manuscript must countain a title and abstract (up to 250 words) in the language in which is being submitted and in English, up to five (5) keywords that allow for proper indexing of the article, and a list of references organized according to ABNT standards.

To ensure anonymity in the evaluation, the manuscript should not contain any identification of authorship (self-references, aknowledgements, or name of the properties of the submitted file). Self-references in the text should be replaced by the word “Author” followed by the year of reference (example: Author, 2020) and completely excluded form the list of references.

The abstract must celarly state the subject of study, the goals of the paper, the methods used, and the results or conclusions.
Manuscripts submitted to the Articles and Interviews sections must be no longer than 10.000 words, including abstract and references.

Manuscripts submitted to the Reviews section must not be no longer than 4.500 words, including abstract and references. This section accepts reviews of papers, either in Portuguese or Spanish, recently published in Brazil (within the last two years). Reviews of papers in foreign languages that have not yet been published in Brazil are also accepted, provided they addres stopics relevant to the social sciences.

For all sections, the submitted manuscript must be presented in its final version whitout highights or revision marks, writen clearly and with correct spelling and grammar, using inclusive language and avoiding, as far as possible, obscure and infrequent terms that may hinder reading without any contribution to knowledge in the area in question.

Footnotes must be limited to an essencial minimum. Attachments and appendices will not be accepted, unless they are indispensable to the understanding of the main text.

Section titles and subtitles must not be in uppercase, with only the first letter capitalized, and must clearly indicate their hierarchy: first-level subtitles should use 12-point font and be bolded, second-level subtitles should use 12-point font in bold italics, and third-level subtitles must use 12-point font in italics without bold.

Drawings, graphs, maps, tables, charts and fotographs must be numbered, contain a title and source, and be included at the end of the document, with a clear indication throughout the text of where they should be inserted. In addition, they must be included as suppalementary documents in the original fortmat in which they were created (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

Citations through the text must follow the author-date system, without using capital letters for the name (example: Moser, 1985). The list of references must be arranged in alphabetical order by the main author’s last name and follow the ABNT standard. The list must not use continuous dash for papers by the same author, but rathe repeat it. Full names (LAST NAME, first name) must be used in the list, and not just the last name followed by the initial. The list must contain only the references cited in the text.

Short literal citations (less than three lines) will be integrated into the paragraph, enclosed by quotation marks and followed by author’s last name as mentioned in the text, year of publication and page(s) of the cited text, all enclosed in parentheses and separated by commas. Citations longer than three lines will be highlighted from the text in a special paragraph, in 11-point font, without italics and quotation marks and a indented 4cm form the left margin.

The list of references must follow the ABTN NBR 6023 standard, as shown in the following examples:
