Fostered by the Latin American Center on Sexuality and Human Rights (CLAM/IMS/UERJ), Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad – Revista Latinoamericana is a free access annual scientific journal, aligned with the open science regime with IDEIA – Impact, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility.

 Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad - Revista Latinoamericana prioritizes the publication of research empirical results based on the perspective of human and social sciences. It publishes original articles, conferences, interviews, book reviews and other texts of an academic nature that, with a focus on the Latin American social context, explore the cultural and political dimensions of sexualities and gender, and bring relevant and original contributions on the subject. The journal publishes texts in three languages ​​(Spanish, Portuguese and English).

History

 

Sexuality, Health and Society – Latin American Journal was created in 2009 with the mission of promoting dialogue between researchers and academics dedicated to studies on sexuality and gender in different Latin American social contexts. With the active participation of specialists from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, it was conceived within the scope of the Latin American Center for Sexuality and Human Rights (CLAM), based since 2003 at the Institute of Social Medicine (IMS) of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).

From the perspective of the human and social sciences, the Journal has published throughout its history empirical research results and academic reflections on sexuality and gender in their social, political, legal, cultural and public health dimensions. Its editorial line is committed to the defense of human rights and throughout its history has sought to disseminate critical approaches to the different forms of discrimination and violence related to practices, norms and social conventions relating to sexuality and gender relations, in their connections with other forms of inequality and social hierarchies, such as those of class, race, generation, national origin, among others.

In addition to the resources provided by the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) and its Institute of Social Medicine (IMS), Sexuality, Health and Society has received support from national and international research funding agencies, such as the Rio de Janeiro State Research Support Foundation (FAPERJ), the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), the Ford Foundation of Brazil, the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA) and the Center for Study and Research in Public Health (CEPESC).

Given its commitment to the broadest circulation of scientific knowledge, Sexuality, Health and Society has managed to remain an open access journal over the years, without charging publication fees.

 

 

Open Access

 

This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal.

Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose.

The Journal complies with SciELO's recommendations on open science, with free access to all published articles, a policy encouraging the publication of preprints, data, and research materials, and the promotion of an informed review system.

Focus and Scope

 

Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad has the mission of promoting the exchange of Latin American academic production and its dissemination among researchers, activists and public policy makers. The Journal publishes contributions that, with a focus on the Latin American social context, explore the cultural and political dimensions of sexualities and bring relevant and original discussions on the subject.

The main topics of interest of Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad - Revista Latinoamericana are:

  1. Social practices and representations on sexualities/eroticism and their connections with various social markers of difference (gender, social class, color/race, ethnicity/nationality, stages of life/generation, etc.);
  2.  Public policies, legal systems and the actions of different actors in civil society (social movements, religious groups, NGOs, funding agencies, etc.) in the process of establishing sexual and reproductive rights in the areas of health, justice and education, among others.
  3. Science and knowledge about sexuality, with an emphasis on the role of public or collective health in the development of research and public policies on the subject.

The Journal prioritizes the perspective of the human and social sciences, accepting works in three languages ​​(Portuguese, Spanish and English).

Given the Journal's themes of interest and focus, submitted materials may be published in the following sections: Articles, Thematic Dossiers, Bibliographic Essays, Speeches and Debates, Interviews, Reviews and Document Collection. Specific guidelines for each section can be found in the “Article Submission” tab.

All published articles receive a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) number.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

 

Manuscripts previously deposited in recognized preprint servers such as Scielo Preprints, ScoArXiv, HAL, Zenodo and university repositories (example: University of Brasília/UnB repository) are accepted for publication.

Previous submission to preprint repositories must be reported in the open science compliance form.

Preprint manuscripts will be peer-reviewed and will follow the other steps provided for unpublished manuscripts (see Peer Review Process below).

 

 

Processo de Avaliação por Pares

 

In line with good open science practices, Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad allows authors of materials submitted to the journal to indicate the evaluation system to which they wish to submit their works:

  • Double-blind evaluation
  • Informed evaluation

In the case of informed evaluation, authors and reviewers will be given the option to communicate directly with each other; it will also be possible to publish the reviews.

The names of the editors responsible for publishing the article will be included in the published articles.

To this end, filling out and submitting the “Open Science Compliance Form” is a mandatory step in the process of submitting materials in the Articles, Dossiers and Bibliographic Essays sections.

Open Data

 

Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad encourages the publication of additional data and information underlying the analyses and research presented. We advise authors to deposit such information in reliable data repositories – such as DataScielo. Additional materials, if made available, must be duly cited, referenced and declared in the text submitted for evaluation. The availability of the data that support the analysis presented must be reported in the “Open Science Compliance Form”.

 

 

Fees

 

This journal offers free and immediate access to its content, pursuing the goal of making scientific knowledge freely available to the public.

There is no fee for submission, review, and publication of materials.

 

 

Policy on Misconduct, Errata, and Retractions

 

Any corrections needed after publication of an article will be evaluated by the Editorial Team, and if they do not constitute misconduct, an ERRATA will be published.

If misconduct is identified, the publication of a retraction by the authors will be mandatory, and other sanctions will be assessed and determined by the Editorial Team.

Allegations of misconduct in research and publication will be addressed in accordance with the basic guidelines for integrity in scientific activity of the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, of Publication Ethics Committee- COPE, and Best Practices Guide for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publishing at  SciELO.

Any evidence of misconduct-such as falsification, data fabrication, plagiarism, or other cases-in published articles will result in a RETRACTATION, not a withdrawal. The retractation will be recorded, documented, and include references for its motivation. Further action and sanctions may be evaluated and will be implemented at the discretion of the journal's Editorial Board.

Errors or errors that do not constitute bad faith will be submitted in the form of an Errata. The Errata aims to preserve the original publication record by reporting any corrections, deletions, or additions. The procedure follows international guidelines and will be conducted in accordance with the guidelines and guidelines of the SciELO Publication Ethics Committee (COPE).

Submission of articles for publication in Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad – Revista Latinoamericana automatically implies that the authors are aware of and in agreement with the guidelines set forth herein.

 

 

Conflict of Interest Policy

 

Conflicts of interest can be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. Conflicts of interest can occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting a manuscript, authors are responsible for acknowledging and disclosing any financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. Conflicts of interest, even potential ones, must be disclosed in a separate document signed by the authors and attached to the submission platform.

 

 

Adoption of Similarity Verification Software

 

With the commitment to avoid plagiarism practices that violate the ethical bases of scientific production and constitute crimes of copyright infringement under Brazilian law, Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad uses software to identify texts that are similar to other content available on the internet. The journal reserves the right to reject manuscripts in which plagiarized content of any extent is identified.

Authors should be aware that reproducing excerpts from previously published articles may be considered a form of self-plagiarism, which in some cases is unacceptable. When this type of reuse of texts is essential or unavoidable, the duplication must always be transparently referenced and properly attributed, as well as comply with the necessary copyright requirements. If a manuscript contains previously published text, authors must notify the Editorial Team at the time of submission.

When applicable, the type of use of Generative Artificial Intelligence must be made explicit in the pieces submitted for evaluation. As detailed in the Guide to the Use of AI Tools and Resources in the Communication of Research in the Scielo Network, “hiding the use and content of AI is an ethical offense that violates the principles of transparency and honesty in research”. Sex and Gender Issues

 

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility

Sexuality Health and Society has been seeking to align itself with the open science regime with IDEIA (Impact, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) at different levels: ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, and regional origin. Currently, its Executive Editorial Board (with 14 people) is composed of 57% women; 70% LGBTQIA+ individuals; and 30% non-white individuals (mixed race and Black people). Furthermore, it incorporates mechanisms to monitor and promote this regime with the authors of the various texts it publishes and its ad-hoc reviewers.

 

 

Ethics Committee

 

Considering that the Journal receives articles from all over Latin America and prioritizes the perspective of the humanities and social sciences, authors must, in the body of the text or in footnotes, explicitly state, when applicable, the approval of the research that underlies the article under review by research ethics committees and/or discuss the ethical precautions taken to minimize potential research risks for participants.

 

 

Publication rights

 

By submitting their work for evaluation, authors assume that the texts, as well as illustrations, tables, bibliographical references, etc., are their sole responsibility and express their opinions, and not necessarily those of Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedade - Revista Latinoamericana.

By submitting their work, authors are authorizing the editors to publish their work and granting their rights for this purpose.

Authors of articles published by Sexuality, Health, and Society retain copyright over their work, licensing it under Creative Commons Attribution CC-BY 4.0, which allows the articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, provided the original work is properly cited. INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

 

Conditions for submission

 

The contribution must be original, unpublished, and not be under evaluation for publication by another journal.

When submitting the material for evaluation, the document "Formulário sobre Conformidade com a Ciência Aberta" must be sent, duly completed and signed, preferably with a digital signature.

When submitting the material for evaluation, the document "Minibio" must be sent, duly completed.

 

 

Types of documents accepted

 

Journal’ sections

Sexualidad Salud y Sociedad publishes the following types of contributions, in Portuguese, Spanish and/or English:

Articles
Unpublished articles must be based on original empirical research and have a maximum of 50,000 characters with spaces, including title, abstract and keywords (in Spanish, Portuguese and English), notes and bibliographic references.

Each article may have a maximum of 4 (four) authors. In exceptional cases and upon justification sent to the Journal by the main author, this limit may be exceeded.

The texts will be analyzed by ad hoc reviewers in a double-blind or informed evaluation processes, according to the author's preference.

Thematic dossiers
The dossier must consist of 5 to 8 unpublished articles in Portuguese, English or Spanish. The editorial board may be consulted to evaluate specific cases. The organizers of the dossier must submit the proposal to the Editorial Board of Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad. The submitted document must include:

  • The general title of the proposal;
  • The titles and institutional affiliations of the organizers and other authors involved in the proposal;
  • A presentation and general justification of the discussion focused on, taking into account the relationship of the organizers with the proposal and the thematic scope of the Journal (up to 2,500 characters with spaces);
  • Title, abstract and up to 5 keywords of each of the articles that will be part of the dossier. The abstract and keywords must total a maximum of 1,000 characters with spaces;
  • Indication of at least three names and email contacts of potential reviewers for each article; taking into account, as far as possible, the institutional diversity of the reviewers.

When formulating a dossier proposal, it should be noted that the Revista Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad establishes that

  • In the event of there being more than one proponent, they must work in institutions located in different regions of the country or in different countries in Latin America
  • For dossiers consisting of 5 or 6 articles, the organizer(s) cannot also be authors of any of the included articles; their authorship is limited to the dossier's introduction.
  • For dossiers consisting of 7 or 8 articles, the organizer(s) can be authors of only one of the articles, besides authoring the dossier's introduction.

Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in the rejection of the submitted proposal.

The proposal should be sent to the email address sexualidadsaludysociedad@gmail.com The subject line of the email should be: “Thematic dossier proposal”. The following will be taken into account in the evaluation:

  • The quality of the proposal and the number of articles;
  • Institutional and regional diversity of the proponents and authors;
  • Compliance with the Journal’s rules regarding the maximum number of authors per article. The editorial board may be consulted to evaluate specific cases.

After the proposal is accepted, the articles will be evaluated by ad hoc reviewers, according to the evaluation system preferred by the author. Each article in the dossier must have a maximum of 50,000 characters with spaces, including the title, abstract and keywords (in Spanish, Portuguese and English), notes and bibliographic references, with the same characteristics indicated in the Articles Section.

Bibliographic essays
This section is intended for the publication of critical essays on topics of interest to the journal's thematic scope, constructed from the analysis of books and/or articles that touch on related subjects.

The essay must have a maximum of 50,000 characters with spaces, including title, abstract and keywords (in Spanish, Portuguese and English), notes and bibliographic references

The texts will be analyzed by ad hoc reviewers, according to the author's preferred evaluation system.

Interviews
The interview must be unpublished and may be conducted by more than one researcher. The text must have a maximum of 40,000 characters with spaces, including title, abstract and keywords (in Spanish, Portuguese and English), notes and bibliographical references.

The interview must have a specific guiding thread appropriate to the thematic scope detailed in our editorial policy; for example, the interviewee's trajectory in the field of studies on sexuality, health and society, his/her path and involvement in the field of activism, dialogues between the interviewee and the academic field and with other authors/social actors in the public debate.

The interview texts must be submitted through the journal's electronic editing system, with the interviewers previously registered as "Authors".

The materials submitted will be evaluated by the editorial team.

Speeches and debates
This section is intended for the publication of conferences, lectures or debates held at academic congresses, symposia and round tables on a subject appropriate to the thematic scope detailed in our editorial policy. The section allows for the individual or joint publication of texts produced for the same event.

Materials submitted for publication in the Speeches and Debates section must have up to 25,000 characters with spaces, including title, abstract and keywords (in Spanish, Portuguese and English), notes and bibliographical references.

Open Science
The section is intended for the publication of reasoned opinions produced during evaluation processes carried out under an open science regime. Ad hoc reviewers of articles approved for publication will be invited by the editorial team to publish in the new section, in the same volume as the evaluated text.

The text will be accompanied by a title and will have between 2,500 (min) and 5,000 (max) characters with spaces, excluding bibliographic references.

Document Collection
The Document collection section is intended for the publication of texts and documents with historical value, such as archival materials, rare or little-known documents, memorials and conferences produced by researchers, collectives and leaders with significant historical involvement in the field of debates on Gender, Sexuality and Human Rights in Latin America.

The submitted materials will be evaluated by the editorial team.

Reviews
Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad welcomes original and unpublished texts that review books related to the issues included in the theme and scope of the journal, published in the last five years, counting from the date of submission in the Journal's system. The proposed review texts cannot be under evaluation and/or about to be published in another journal.

  • The maximum length of the reviews is 20,000 characters (with spaces).
  • The reviews do not have titles; they must be headed with the complete bibliographic reference of the reviewed book (following the Journal's Author Guidelines regarding bibliographic citations).
  • The author/s of the review must include, after the complete bibliographic reference of the reviewed book, their name/s, title, institutional affiliation, city, country and e-mail.
  • The reviews must not contain notes.
  • If the review text contains other bibliographical references, these must follow the Author Guidelines established for articles, which are detailed in the "Submissions" section.
  • Review texts must be submitted through the journal's electronic editing system, with the reviewer having previously registered as "Author".
  • Immediately after assessing the thematic relevance and formal adequacy of the reviews received, the Book Review Editors may approve the texts as they were submitted, suggest modifications, or reject them, applying the journal's editorial criteria
 

 

Contributions from Authors

 

Throughout the editorial process, authors will be asked to indicate their role in the article, according to the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (https://credit.niso.org/). This website describes the roles eligible for recognition.

 

 

General rules for submitting contributions

 
  • Texts must be written and edited in Word, in .doc format, Arial 12 font, with 1.5 spacing.
  • Page size must be A4, with 3.0cm margins (top, bottom, left and right). Page numbers must be placed in the upper right corner (Arial 10).
  • The title of the paper must be centered, in Arial 14 font, in bold, with capital letters and 1.5 spacing. If there is a subtitle, it must be written in lowercase letters. Abstracts must be in Arial 12, with single spacing.
  • The abstract and keywords must total a maximum of 1000 characters with spaces.
  • Keywords, up to a maximum of 5, must be entered with a lowercase initial, with the exception of proper names, and separated by a semicolon, with a period after the last keyword.
  • Graphs and/or tables must be included in the text, not at the end. They must be inserted in jpg format, with 300 dpi quality, so that direct reproduction is possible. They must have the corresponding titles and numbers, as well as references and sources, if applicable, all in Arial 10 font.
  • The standardization of citations, references and captions of illustrations must be in accordance with the style guidelines detailed in the Chicago Manual of Style.
 

 

Submission Process

 

Contributions will be received in a continuous flow on the Uerj Portal platform. When submitting, the section to which the author wishes to submit the material must be selected.
When submitting the proposal, the author(s) must submit, together with the piece under evaluation:

  • Open Science Compliance Form.
  • Minibio.
  • Financing Statement.

In the “Open Science Compliance Form” will be informed

  • whether the manuscript is a preprint and, if so, its location;
  • whether data, program codes and other materials underlying the manuscript text are available in any repository and whether these were duly cited and referenced in the submitted material;
  • which evaluation system is desired in the peer review process.

In the “Minibio” form, authors must provide full name, ORCID number and Lattes link, as well as the full name, city and country of your institutional affiliation (indicate institution + college and department, city, state and country). The names of institutions and programs must be presented in full and in the institution's original language, or in the English version.

As part of the Impact, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Policy of Sexuality, Health and Society, the “Minibio” Form will allow you to fill in information about your social, ethnic and racial profile, sexual orientation, gender identity and being a person with disabilities. This data will not be made public and will only be used to monitor the Journal's inclusion policies.

The Funding Declaration, in an attached file, must include the sources of support for the work, including names of sponsors, contract number (if applicable), along with explanations of the role of these sources.

 

 

Evaluation Process

 

The thematic and disciplinary relevance of the texts to be submitted to the peer review process will be defined in advance by the editors.

The original articles will be submitted for evaluation by at least two ad hoc evaluators chosen from a group of recognized experts in the various areas of interest of the Journal, who will give their opinion on the content and quality of the contributions.

To be published, the works submitted for review must obtain favorable determinations from the two evaluators who are experts in the subject. In the event of disparity of opinion, the text will be submitted for critical review by a third ad hoc evaluator, based on which the editorial decision on whether or not to publish will be made.
As a result of the evaluation process, the Journal's Editors compose an Editorial Definition on the article indicating that it is:

- Accepted for publication, or;
- Accepted for publication upon satisfactory compliance with the modifications requested by the results of the review - and may or may not undergo a second round of evaluations, or;
- Rejected

 

 

Notes, Citations and Bibliographic References

 

Sexuality, Health and Society - Latin American Journal follows the style and formatting guidelines detailed in the Chicago Manual of Style and the specifications defined by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards for citing official documents.

1. Notes must be in footnote format and cannot consist solely of bibliographic references.
2. Direct text citations, of up to three lines, must be enclosed in quotation marks in the body of the text. Citations with more than three lines must be indented (left margin) by 4 cm, without quotation marks and in Arial 10 font.
3. The authorship reference of a direct citation excerpt must appear in the body of the text in the following format: author's last name | space | year of publication | comma | page number(s), as in the examples:
(Carrara 2015, 324) (Butler 2015, 220-221)
If two or more references have the same author and year, they should be distinguished using lowercase letters (a, b, c) after the year. To paraphrase an idea, use the same citation format, omitting the page number.
4. The complete list of bibliographic references should be inserted at the end of the text

Digital documents and texts

In the case of citations of content published on social networks, we adopt the following standard:
Profile name or @ [Facebook, Instagram, X…). Year. “Title or first sentence of the publication”. Name of the social network, day, month, year. Link to the post
URLs must be active at the time of submission of the article for evaluation by the journal.

Laws, regulations and decrees
Bibliographic references relating to laws, regulations, decrees and legal documents must comply with ABNT Standard 6023/2018. This scope includes federal constitutions, constitutional reforms and infra-constitutional legal texts (decrees, ordinances, resolutions, provisional measures, resolutions, etc.). In general terms, it must include: authorship/entity publishing the legal document (in capital letters), document title, menu, place and date of publication, access link and access date. In the case of a printed document, include city, publisher, year and page range.
