To promote the fields of Materials Science and Engineering and related fundamental disciplines through the publication of scientific articles on a wide range of topics, facilitating exchange and collaboration among scientists, industry professionals, and students.

Revista Matéria follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted virtual access to all scientific texts published by the journal.

Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties through an open license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/deed - CC-BY), permitting free and immediate access to the work. It authorizes any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, index them, use them as data for software, or use them for any other lawful purpose.

In line with the principles of Open Science, Revista Matéria encourages the corresponding author, at the time of submission or afterward, to preferably submit the manuscript to the SciELO Preprints server.

• Authors must complete and submit the Open Science Compliance Form with the manuscript. In this Form, authors are requested to inform: (a) if the manuscript is a preprint and, if so, its location; (b) whether data, software codes, and other materials underlying the manuscript text are properly cited and referenced; and (c) whether accept openness options in the peer review process. • The journal also offers authors and reviewers options to open the peer review process, with or without revealing their identities. The indication of whether the submission is a preprint and authorization to disclose names can be given by the authors at the time of submission, by attaching the Open Science Compliance Corm to the Revista submission platform. Reviewers may also indicate their consent when filling out the electronic review form within the Revista Matéria evaluation platform.
• Revista Matéria encourages authors to publish/share the experimental analysis database, instruments, statistical analysis script, codes, methods and/or additional materials used and resulting from research that are generally found in the texts of articles published by journals.

Authors are not allowed to submit the same manuscript simultaneously to Revista Matéria and other journals. Plagiarism of any kind or any other unethical behavior is not tolerated. The submission of a multi-author manuscript by the corresponding author implies that all co-authors made significant contributions to the work.

Revista Matéria follows the ethical principles established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), providing guidance to editors, reviewers, and authors on aspects such as study design and ethical approval, data analysis rigor, definition of research authorship merit, identification of conflicts of interest, rigor in peer review, misconduct, redundant publication, plagiarism, and more. To ensure the originality of its manuscripts, the journal uses the CopySpider system to check for duplication and identify plagiarism. During the manuscript submission process, the corresponding author must submit a declaration ensuring that the content is original, unpublished, and not under review, evaluation, or publication in any other journal.

The journal follows COPE flowcharts for identifying and addressing misconduct. If plagiarism is detected, the author(s) will be notified and provided with the CopySpider report. In cases of doubt or dispute, the Editor-in-Chief will contact the corresponding author.

If, after publication, ethical misconduct by the authors is confirmed, the Editor-in-Chief and the editorial team will evaluate each case. Upon confirmation, the journal will publish a correction (erratum) or retraction.

Revista Matéria aims to provide a source for the exchange and dissemination of new ideas, technological developments, and research results in areas that encompass Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Energy Engineering, Chemistry, and related fields. Emphasis is placed on original research, both analytical and experimental, covering all aspects of research.

When significant new advances are made or when new areas are developed to a definitive stage, special review articles may be considered upon prior invitation by the Editor-in-Chief.

Submitted manuscripts will undergo a rigorous evaluation process by the Editorial Board, always through peer review. The Editorial Board is assisted in this task by a computerized system for managing the review process – ScholarOne.

An additional condition for publication is the completion and submission to the Editorial Office of the Confirmation of Authorship and Publication Rights form. The submission of this document represents the final communication between each author of the article and the Editorial Office before publication.

This journal follows the standards defined in the Digital Preservation Policy program of the SciELO Program - SciELO Program Digital Preservation Policy. In line with the purposes of Open Science, Revista Matéria accepts that the corresponding author, at the time of article submission or later, may submit the manuscript preferably to the SciELO Preprints server. At Revista Matéria, the peer review process follows the "simple anonymous method," in which the authors are blind to the identity of the reviewers, but the reviewers are blind to the identity of the authors. The names of the Editor-in-Chief or Associate Editors will be published in the final version of the article.

The editorial policy of Revista Matéria follows its own criteria for the evaluation of manuscripts in continuous submission and publication processes. The evaluation process consists of the following stages:

1. Initially, manuscripts submitted through the ScholarOne system undergo a preliminary check by the administrator for compliance with the general guidelines defined by the editorial policy: regarding the focus and scope of the journal, the relevance of the topic, textual coherence, and similarity analysis in all submitted documents using the CopySpider software.
2. Subsequently, the manuscripts are forwarded to the Editor-in-Chief for assessment of relevance and contribution to the scientific community. If manuscripts are unsuitable or fail to comply with the journal’s standards, they may be rejected based on these preliminary evaluations. Otherwise, they will be directed by the Editor-in-Chief to the Associate Editors, who are responsible for appointing an Assistant Editor and initiating the peer review process.
3. The Assistant Editors will select at least two reviewers from institutions different from those of the authors to carry out the peer review. Reviewers, through a report written in the ScholarOne form, will recommend one of four options:
   • Acceptance
   • Minor revision
   • Major revision
   • Rejection
4. The Associate Editors, after reviewing the reports, forward the manuscript to the author(s). In cases of 'Minor revision' or 'Major revision,' the article is returned to the author(s) for correction, modification, and justification in response to reviewer comments. The revised manuscript must be resubmitted via ScholarOne by the corresponding author, accompanied by a cover letter explaining the responses to each change requested by the reviewers. Suggestions not accepted must be justified, and all changes must be clearly highlighted in the text.
5. The revised and resubmitted version will be re-evaluated by both reviewers and the Editorial Team. In its second version, the article may be rejected, approved, and/or returned for a third version. It is important to clarify that, regardless of reviewer opinions, the Editorial Team retains final decision-making authority in any review round and may suggest or request modifications to the manuscript.
6. Any additions or modifications to the submitted text must be made only before manuscript acceptance. The Editor-in-Chief will consider changes after acceptance only under exceptional circumstances and with proper justification. While the Editor-in-Chief evaluates the request, publication will be on hold.
7. After publication, any errors found by authors or readers, when communicated to the Editorial Team, will be corrected after due verification through an erratum and published in the Journal.

Galley proof of the article will be sent by the editorial team to the corresponding author via email in PDF format for final approval. The author will have 48 hours to correct and return the duly revised manuscript, if necessary.

This process is intended for minor modifications, spelling corrections, and verification only. Extensive modifications will require re-evaluation by the reviewers and will delay the publication of the work.

It should be noted that the inclusion/alteration of new authors and affiliations is not permitted at this stage of the publication process.

At Revista Matéria, authors are encouraged to publish/share experimental data sets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, codes, methods, and additional materials used and resulting from research, which usually underlie the texts of published articles. If data sharing cannot be provided within the article itself, it is recommended that they be made available in open online repositories such as SciELO Data. In this case, the article must indicate the reference where the underlying content can be found.

There are no fees for submission and evaluation of manuscripts. However, for the publication of articles, until December 31, 2025, the following amounts are charged:

• R$ 650.00 (six hundred fifty), for Brazilian authors and 
• USD 230.00 (two hundred thirty) for foreign authors.

From January 2026, publication fees will be adjusted to:

• R$ 900.00 (nine hundred) for Brazilian authors and
• USD 270.00 (two hundred seventy) for foreign authors.

Accordingly, the article will be evaluated in accordance with the editorial policy of Revista Matéria. To ensure the originality of its manuscripts, the journal uses the CopySpider system to verify duplication and detect plagiarism, always following the ethical principles established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

However, if after publication ethical misconduct (such as plagiarism) is identified by the authors, or errors and failures are found, regardless of their nature or origin, that do not constitute author misconduct, a retraction or erratum will be published, respectively.

Retraction publication: an article already published in which misconduct is identified remains indexed in the journal database as retracted. The retraction documents the reason and must be properly referenced through communication from the author, editor, or another authorized agent, and published in the same journal.

The retraction must be total or partial. Partial retraction applies to a specific part of the article without compromising the entirety of the published research.

The procedure for registering the retraction of a manuscript published by Revista Matéria begins after receipt of formal communication to the Editor-in-Chief via email: revmateria@gmail.com, who will notify SciELO. The communication must be accompanied by the retraction text explaining the reasons for which the article is being retracted.

Erratum publication: in cases of errors or failures, regardless of their nature or origin, that do not constitute misconduct, corrections will be made through an erratum. After publication, any errors identified by authors or readers, when communicated to the Editorial Team, will be corrected as soon as possible following proper verification.

When submitting a manuscript, authors are responsible for acknowledging and disclosing any conflicts of interest that may have influenced their work. If such conflicts exist, even potentially, the author(s) must declare them in a signed document attached to the submission platform. Conflicts of interest may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature. Conflicts of interest can occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. Revista Matéria uses duplication checks with already published texts through the CopySpider software (https://copyspider.com.br/main/) for plagiarism detection. Articles submitted may contain a maximum similarity percentage of 10%. The similarity check is performed on the first version of the submitted manuscript and on the final version of the article.

Authors preparing a manuscript for the journal can use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support them. However, Revista Matéria recommends caution in their use and defines its actions based on COPE recommendations. It is emphasized that these tools must never replace critical thinking, expertise, and human evaluation. AI technology should always be applied with human supervision and control.

Authors are responsible for the content of their work. This includes responsibility for: 1) Carefully analyzing and verifying the accuracy, comprehensiveness, and impartiality of all AI-generated output; 2) Editing and adapting all material thoroughly to ensure that the manuscript represents the author's authentic and original contribution and reflects their own analysis, interpretation, perceptions, and ideas; 3) Ensuring that the use of any tools or sources, AI-based or otherwise, is clear made and transparent to readers.

The use of AI tools in the manuscript preparation process must be declared by adding a statement at the end of the manuscript when the article is submitted. The statement will appear in the published work and should be placed in a new section before the references list.

This declaration does not apply to the use of basic tools, such as tools used to check grammar, spelling, and references. If you have nothing to declare, you do not need to add a statement.

Title of the new section: Declaration on the use of AI in the manuscript preparation process.

Statement: During the preparation of this work, the author(s) used [NAME OF TOOL/SERVICE] in order to [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and took(s) full responsibility for the content of the published article.

The Editorial Team of Revista Matéria, as well as the authors publishing in the journal, must always follow the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER) guidelines. The SAGER guidelines provide a set of instructions for reporting sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, and results interpretation. Furthermore, Revista Matéria promotes gender equity in the composition of its editorial board.

When submitting the manuscript, authors must attach a declaration of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research.

Authors of articles published in Revista Matéria retain the copyright of their works, licensing them under the Creative Commons Attribution BY 4.0 - CC-BY license, which allows unrestricted reuse and distribution, provided that the original work is properly cited.

• The journal publishes original theoretical, applied research, and communication articles.
• Review articles will only be accepted by prior invitation from the Editor-in-Chief.
• Articles may be written in Portuguese or English and must include an abstract of up to 200 words: in Portuguese and English for articles written in Portuguese, and only in English for articles written in English. Articles written in English are recommended for broader scientific dissemination.
• Revista Matéria accepts the submission of preprints and recommends preferably using the SciELO Preprints server.
• The journal accepts comments on content previously published in Revista Matéria within 12 months of publication, up to 2,000 words, one table or figure, a maximum of five references, and five authors. Comments are generally not peer reviewed. The journal will invite a response from the original article’s authors, and both comments and response will be published together.
• The content of submitted manuscript must not have been previously published or submitted to other journals. Manuscripts will be selected for evaluation by the designated reviewers and editors only if they fully comply with the Journal's standards.
• The scientific articles published in Revista Matéria come from research carried out in areas that encompass Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Energy Engineering, Chemistry and related areas.
• To ensure the integrity and authenticity of the document, all articles published in Revista Matéria receive a unique identification code, DOI.

For transparency and recognition, corresponding authors must provide co-authorship contributions to the manuscript using the CRediT (CRediT – Contributor Role Taxonomy). The specific role(s) of each author must be reported at the end of the text, in precise and detailed manner. The CRediT taxonomy includes 14 different roles describing each contributor's specific contribution to the scholarly output.

Manuscripts submitted to Revista Matéria must follow the MSWord template.

Tables and equations must be typed, not inserted as images, and figures accepted only in TIFF or JPEG format.

The article must have the following composition:

I. Title in submission language (English or Portuguese), to which the manuscript will be submitted.

II. English Title - Abstract

The title must contain a maximum of 20 words. Only the first letter of the first word of the title should be capitalized. Following words should be lowercase, except for proper nouns. Acronyms should be capitalized

III. Authors' names

The manuscript file sent at the time of submission must contain the name(s) of the author(s) and the identification of their institution(s). The corresponding author must already be registered as an author in the SciELO Publication System before beginning the submission process. It is necessary for the corresponding author to define his/her position as author of the article in relation to the other authors. The author designated as corresponding author must provide contact information such as: full email and postal address. After submitting the article, changes to the authors' names are not permitted, whether in sequence, substitution or addition.

IV. Authors' ORCID

All authors must have an ORCID registration and link it to their ScholarOne registration. They must also be added in step 4 of the submission process in the ScholarOne system.

V. Affiliations - provide the complete affiliations of all authors.

VI. Abstract

An abstract containing 200 words should be presented. This abstract is intended to give an overall idea of the article, disclosing the objectives, methodological features, important results and the main conclusions reached.

VII. Keywords

Enter a maximum of five keywords separated by commas with the first letter capitalized. The list of keywords that should well represent the main topics covered by the article.

VIII. Introduction

The introduction should present the paper theme, justifying the aim based on literature. It should also present the paper objectives.

IX. Materials and Methods

It should contain essential information that allows the research to be replicated by other researchers. This section should describe all materials, procedures, and methods used in the experimental or theoretical part of the work. One or more appendices may be used to describe details of the experimental setup, fabrication, or mathematical developments used throughout the work. Methods that are already published should be summarized and indicated by reference. If quoting directly from a previously published method, use quotation marks and also cite the source. Any modifications to existing methods should also be described.

X. Results and Discussion

This section must present all the results obtained with the necessary information to securely verify the measured values and their correspondent significance. Although the results may be presented with the discussion of their meaning, it is suggested that a thorough discussion, based on information from literature, may be presented in a section apart.

1. Make ensure that the presentation of all experimental results is accompanied by a statistical analysis, including standard deviation of measures and error bars in the graphs.

2. One or more appendixes can be included to show details of the analyzed results that may make the section overloaded.

XI. Discussion

This is the appropriate section of the article to add scientific content, this is the appropriate section of the article to add scientific content, by analyzing the results presented with due support from the literature and by modeling and simulating specific behaviors and conditions.

XII. Conclusions

The conclusions should be concise and represent the most important aspects found during the reported work development. They should seek to point out the scientific and/or technological and/or theoretical progress effectively achieved.

XIII. Authors' Contributions

Authors must provide individual co-authorship contributions to the manuscript in this section, using the relevant CREDiT taxonomy. The CREDiT taxonomy includes 14 different roles that describe each collaborator's specific contribution to academic production.

XIV. Supplementary documents (optional)

If there is supplementary research data, the corresponding author must provide a declaration of availability regarding the location, nature, and referencing in this section. The following links provide support for information on supplementary data:

XV. Conflict of interest

Authors must declare in this section whether they have any conflict of interest, whether financial or otherwise, that may have influenced the preparation or execution of the work. Furthermore, authors must declare this in a separate signed document attached to the article submission platform. Likewise, the editors and reviewers designated to evaluate the article must declare that there is no conflict of interest, whether financial, related to kinship (up to the third degree) or of any other nature, that could have influenced the evaluation of the article. XVI. Funding statement (if applicable)

Authors must provide the name of the funding agency/institution with its protocol number or reference.

In this section, credits can be given for support received in the work.

1. Revista Matéria uses numbered references. Citations must be indicated in the text by the author(s) surname(s), with capital letters, followed by the reference number in brackets when the surname is part of the sentence. If the surname is not part of the sentence, only the number should be inserted between brackets. References must provide complete details, separated by commas, including DOI link when available.
2. The list of references at the end of the paper should provide accurate information to ease any query. Such information should be separated by commas and not by dot or semicolon. For quotations in the body text, the expression et al. (italic) is used for all papers that have more than three authors.

XIX. Information about the manuscript's deposit on a preprint server, if applicable, indicating the access address and DOI number; citation and referencing of the research data, specifying the repository and DOI number. Attach the Open Science Compliance Form.

1. The submitted manuscript must have been edited only in the Template available at: http://www.materia.coppe.ufrj.br/standard.dot, and must be used in MSWord files , version 2007 or newer ones. Preferably, the generated articles should be saved in .doc extension.
2. All body text should be written in one column, with Times New Roman typeface with a font size of 10pt. The titles should be typed with capital letters and the subtitles in capital letter and lowercase, with Arial bold typeface with size of 9pt. In these cases, the space between lines should always be of 12pt.
3. Page: A4 paper, portrait orientation, top and bottom margins of 2.5 cm, left margins of 3.0 cm and right margins of 2.5 cm.
4. All items should be capitalized, bold, and left-aligned, except for keywords, which should have only the first letter capitalized. Subitems should be left-aligned, bold, and only the first letter capitalized.
5. Quantities must be expressed in SI (International System) and scientific terminology must follow the international conventions of each area in question.
6. Digital Assets - tables, figures, graphs, maps, images, photographs, drawings, tables and figures must be self-explanatory and 8.75 or 18 cm wide, with text in Times New Roman font, size 9, and inserted just below the paragraph in which they are cited for the first time.
   1. Tables - The preferred table presentation model is shown in Table 1. When creating a table, it should be applied the style "03. basic table". In the titles line it should be applied the specific style "03. table_titles ". The style applied to the table caption is "03. table_caption ", with the titles in bold, as shown in this example, Table 1.
   2. Figures – The Figures are presented in Revista Matéria with the title in bold and the caption must be positioned centered below the figure. To ensure good readability, the figures that might be created must be saved in .jpg format, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and minimum size of 1024 pixels at the longest side. The original figures should be sent as appendixes to enable any necessary adjustments. The figure should be located and dimensioned in the article.
   3. Equations - This style is used to align the MS Equation object and its respective number. This style is based on the “text” style, except for that it presents different tabs: the first for the MS Equation object, set to the left margin, and the second for numbering the equation, adjusted to the right margin. The tab is performed by an unfilled table with no border. It should be typed with simple spacing between lines and with spaces before and after 12pt. It is possible to insert space between paragraphs of the same style. Each subsequent paragraph will follow the same style. Every equation should be inserted as left aligned figure with 10mm indentation. The equation numbering should be aligned on the right in the same line of the equation, as shown in the example below. To enter two equations, it is possible to copy and paste the previous line in the following one, the style is automatically applied. All equations should be numbered sequentially.

The references must comply with the requirements of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT).

Revista Matéria uses numbered references: the quotations must be indicated in the text by the author(s) surname(s), with capital letters, followed by the reference number in brackets when the surname is part of the sentence. If the surname is not part of the sentence, only the number should be inserted between brackets.

Changes to authorship

Authors are expected to consider carefully the list and order of authors before submitting their manuscript and provide the definitive list of authors at the time of the original submission. Any addition or deletion of author names in the authorship list is not permitted.

The Editor WILL NOT consider the addition, deletion or rearrangement of authors after the manuscript has been submitted.

Authorship requirements

Effective January 1, 2026, all authors and co-authors listed on a submission must provide valid institutional email addresses. This requirement applies to all submissions. Submissions lacking proper and valid institutional emails will be rejected. Any exceptions to this policy will be made at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief.

Estimated time for decision and publication

All manuscripts submitted to Revista Matéria will receive an initial response within 7 calendar days. This includes manuscripts rejected in pre-review as well as those accepted for review.

The average review time for a final decision on approval or rejection is 80 days, varying depending on the number of review rounds.
