Brief Background
The Revista Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde (RBAFS) was created in 1995 when its first issue was published, at that time containing six articles. RBAFS is a non-profit journal and is primarily funded by the Sociedade Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde. The creation of the RBAFS was an initiative of the Association of Physical Education Teachers of Londrina, more specifically of faculty members from the State University of Londrina, conceived by professors Dartagnan Pinto Guedes and Abdallah Achour Junior, with the latter leading and serving as Editor-in-Chief from the journal's inception until 2007. In 2007, during the sixth edition of the Brazilian Congress of Physical Activity and Health, when the Sociedade Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde was officially established, it was proposed to the RBAFS to become an official publication of this new scientific society. Thus, with a gesture of detachment and academic vision, the journal was transferred to the newly created Sociedade Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde, which has since been funding the journal. |
Open Access
This journal follows the Open Access model, providing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open Access is the condition where the copyright holder of a scholarly work grants usage rights to others using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY 4.0 ) allowing for immediate free access to the work and permitting any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose. |
Open Science Compliance
The Revista Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde (RBAFS) is aligned with the principles of Open Science, a research model that advocates for the sharing of information online, in contrast to the closed research of laboratories. Thus, the journal adopts the following policies related to Open Science:
Moreover, the RBAFS is aligned with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). Thus, the journal seeks to ensure that the articles it publishes are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. This commitment reinforces our adherence to Open Science, promoting transparency, knowledge dissemination, and scientific collaboration, with the aim of expanding the impact and advancement of the field of physical activity and health. This journal follows the Gold Open Access model, and all submitted articles must be accompanied by the Open Science Compliance Form |
Ethics in Publication
The editorial practice for cases of scientific misconduct (plagiarism, self-plagiarism, data falsification or fabrication, misuse of references or citations, duplication, authorship disputes, among others) follows the procedures, checklists, and guidelines outlined in the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Code of Conduct and the SciELO Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication. The Revista Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde implements Turnitin software to plagiarism and self-plagiarism tracking after the article is accepted by the Section Editor, and authors must be aware of the implications outlined in the legal provisions of the Penal Code (Article 184) and the Copyright Law (Article 7, paragraph three of Law No. 9,610, of February 19, 1998 – see Law No. 12,853, of 2013). |

Preprints
The Revista Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde accepts and encourages the submission of articles previously deposited on preprint servers. A preprint is a complete manuscript, ready for submission, made publicly available before or in parallel with submission to the journal. The use of preprints is at the author’s discretion. At the time of submission to the journal, authors must indicate, in the Open Science compliance form, the name of the server and the corresponding DOI of the preprint. Preprints deposited on SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv and medRxiv are accepted. Submissions from other preprint servers may be evaluated by the editors. Only manuscripts not under review by another journal will be considered. Depositing a preprint does not affect the originality of the publication. The peer-review process will follow the journal’s regular workflow, except that it will not be double-blind, since authorship is known. Once accepted, the article will receive its own DOI from RBAFS, which will be added to the original preprint DOI in the final published version. |
Peer Review Process
The editorial workflow of the Revista Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde is detailed in the flowchart. In summary, each submitted manuscript must be accompanied by a form indicating aspects related to good research practices, open science, conflicts of interest, authors’ contributions, the use of artificial intelligence, and agreement with the license adopted by the journal. Initially, the manuscript is evaluated by the Editors-in-Chief regarding its alignment with the journal’s scope and editorial policies, its presentation format, and its potential scientific contribution. If approved at this stage, it is forwarded to the Assistant Editor, who verifies compliance with formatting requirements and mandatory documentation. Once this step is completed, the manuscript is sent to the Section Editor, who conducts a preliminary assessment of the content. After this evaluation, the manuscript may be rejected or sent for review by two or more external reviewers. The standard review process of the journal is double-blind, meaning that neither the authors nor the reviewers have access to each other’s identities. However, if the authors express interest in an open review and the reviewers also indicate this preference in the review form, both parties’ identities will be disclosed, thus characterizing an open peer review. After the manuscript review, each reviewer may recommend rejection, acceptance, or request major or minor revisions. The review reports may be made available anonymously as supplementary material to the manuscript. After receiving the reviewers’ feedback, the Editor will decide whether to accept, reject, or request revisions from the authors. If revisions are requested, the Section Editor will reassess the revised manuscript to determine whether additional reviews are necessary before a final decision. In alignment with Open Science practices and greater transparency in the peer review process, the names of the Section Editor and Editor-in-Chief who oversaw the evaluation process are published in the article. |
Open Data
The Revista Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde (RBAFS) supports the principles of transparency and scientific reproducibility and encourages the open sharing of data, codes, methods, and other materials used and generated in published research, in accordance with the FAIR Principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). Research data include, among others: raw or processed data, spreadsheets, statistics, codes, laboratory notebooks, protocols, questionnaires, field records, images, videos, audio files, methodologies, and standards used. Authors are encouraged to deposit their datasets in publicly accessible repositories and to reference the repository’s address (URL or DOI) in the manuscript body and in the Data Availability Statement section. The corresponding author must indicate, at the time of submission, the repository used, allowing editors and reviewers access during the evaluation process. |
Fees
The Revista Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde (RBAFS) is a non-profit journal, primarily funded by the Sociedade Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde, which covers approximately 60% of the costs for publishing each article. Therefore, in alignment with the Declaration on the Use of Publication Cost Contributions (PCCs) within the SciELO Network, authors of manuscripts approved for publication are charged a Publication Cost Contribution fee to partially assist with publication costs. The value of the fee is presented on https://rbafs.org.br/RBAFS/taxaspublicacao |
Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy
The Revista Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde adopts the publication ethics principles included in the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) code of conduct. The Editorial Body will assess and address ethical issues and/or issues that may harm the journal's reputation. In cases of misconduct, the journal will apply the retraction policy per the SciELO Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication . The Registration and Publication of Errata and retraction will follow the recommendations proposed by SciELO. To submit a complaint regarding scientific misconduct involving material published in RBAFS, it is necessary to send an email to rbafs@sbafs.com.br with the relevant information about the complaint, which will be handled confidentially. Once received, the complaint is logged and undergoes an initial screening to assess its relevance. If deemed valid, an investigation committee, free of conflicts of interest, is formed, and the accused author(s) are notified, with the right to defense. The investigation may involve data review and consultation with experts or institutions. Based on the committee's report, the editor-in-chief will make decisions, which may include retraction, correction of the article, or sanctions against the author. The complainant is informed of the outcome, and the entire process is documented and archived. All actions resulting from this process will be based on the guidelines of Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and SciELO. |
Policy on Conflict of Interest
Conflicts of interest may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature. Conflicts of interest can arise when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. Upon submission, authors are responsible for acknowledging and disclosing any financial or other conflicts that may have influenced their work. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author(s) must indicate it in the Submission Form. For more information, see: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest. |
Adoption of Similarity Software
The Revista Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde uses Turnitin software to detect textual similarities, including potential cases of plagiarism and self-plagiarism. The analysis is conducted after the article’s initial approval by the Section Editor, as part of the academic integrity verification process. Each similarity report is individually assessed by the Editor-in-Chief, taking into account the specific characteristics of each manuscript. When similarities suggesting possible misconduct are identified, the case is reviewed by the editorial board, and appropriate measures are taken in accordance with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Confirmed cases of plagiarism or self-plagiarism may result in the rejection of the manuscript or the retraction of the publication, depending on the severity. Manuscripts previously made available in preprint repositories are also subject to review. |
Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources
The use of artificial intelligence in the process of preparing articles submitted to the Revista Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde is permitted as long as it is aligned with the ethical precepts of scientific research. Thus, artificial intelligence tools and language models cannot be listed as authors, nor be responsible for any excerpts or content of the manuscript. Accepted activities for the use of these tools will include: (i) assistance in manuscript writing when used to paraphrase or enhance the author’s original content; (ii) literature search, provided that the author(s) take responsibility for the selection and critical analysis of the research conducted; and (iii) production of images or graphic elements, which must be explicitly mentioned in the Materials and Methods section of the article with details on how the tool was used. The use of these tools must be declared in the Submission Form. In all cases, the authors are responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and originality of their research articles. |
Gender and Sex Issues
The Revista Brasileira de Atividade Física e Saúde (RBAFS) values manuscripts that use language promoting equity, diversity, and respect for all individuals. Authors are encouraged to avoid expressions, descriptors, or examples that reflect stereotypes, cultural biases, or irrelevant personal characteristics. Gender-neutral or plural terms should be prioritized where appropriate, and care should be taken to ensure that coding, labels, or classifications do not contain exclusionary or offensive language. Beyond language, the RBAFS emphasizes the importance of systematically considering sex and gender in research, in alignment with the SAGER guidelines. This includes explicit reporting of how these variables are defined, measured, and analyzed, as well as presenting results disaggregated by sex and/or gender whenever relevant. Authors should also discuss the potential influence of sex and gender on study outcomes and their implications for the interpretation and generalizability of the findings. |
Ethics Committee
For studies involving data collection with human subjects, approval by a Research Ethics Committee is required, with the participants signing the Free and Informed Consent Form. Studies that do not meet these requirements will not be accepted for publication in the journal. |
