Brief Background
|
ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE - OH (Brazilian Journal of Ornamental Horticulture) is the official journal of the Brazilian Society of Floriculture and Ornamental Plants - SBFPO. Founded in 1995 by the Brazilian Society of Ornamental Horticulture, the journal was created to disseminate research and strengthen the connection between the scientific community and the productive sector. In 2014, the journal's title was changed to “Ornamental Horticulture” with the aim of expanding its international reach. Since its creation, the publication has been uninterrupted, with a frequency changing from two annual issues (1995–2014) to a quarterly publication (2015–2016) and, from 2017, to quarterly. In January 2024, the journal adopted the continuous publication format, which allows the immediate dissemination of articles. Thus, our aim and mission is to continue contributing to the development of Ornamental Horticulture and Landscaping, maintaining high international standards. The journal is intended for the publication of technical and scientific works related to the areas of floriculture, ornamental plants, landscaping and landscapes, green roofs, vertical gardens, urban horticulture and edible flowers, lawns, urban afforestation, green areas, written by members of the national and international scientific community. |
Periodicity
|
The Ornamental Horticulture Journal features a continuous publication format, allowing for faster publication, optimizing the communication process and making research available. Every year, a special call for articles is issued, seeking to stimulate and expand the dissemination of innovative research on current topics defined by the OH Editorial Board. All articles must be submitted by Submission System and will undergo the peer review process, including articles for special editions. Articles must be submitted in English (American). All articles submitted to Ornamental Horticulture must not have been submitted and/or published simultaneously, in whole or in part, in another scientific journal or periodical. |
Open Access
|
This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing virtual access, without restrictions (including financial restrictions), to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY ), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to the full texts of the articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose. |
Open Science Compliance
|
This journal follows the Open Access model. Authors must complete and submit the following with the manuscript: Open Science Compliance Form, along with the Title page. In this form, you are asked to inform: (a) whether the manuscript is a preprint and, if so, its location; (b) whether data, program codes and other materials underlying the manuscript text must be properly cited and referenced; and, (c) whether you accept open options in the peer review process. OH is constantly aligned with Open Science practices and, for this reason, adopts a position of permanent improvement and updating of these practices. OH encourages the availability of data and codes, allowing verification and replication of results, promoting transparency and reproducibility of research. By mutual agreement between reviewers and authors, OH will publish in the final version of the approved article the name of the editor or editors responsible for the manuscript evaluation process. |
Ethics in Publication

The editorial board of the journal OH follows ethical standards accepted by the international scientific community and makes every effort to prevent any violation of these standards. The editorial board adopts the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and expects the same from all parties involved: editors, reviewers and authors. |

The journal is intended for the publication of technical and scientific papers related to the areas of floriculture, ornamental plants, landscaping and landscapes, green roofs, vertical gardens, urban horticulture and edible flowers. Landscaping includes green areas, urban trees and lawns. The types of articles published are Scientific Article, Technical Article, Review Article and Description of varieties and/or cultivars. Furthermore, an Editorial is published per volume. All categories of articles should be as close as possible to the structure used for Scientific Articles |

|
The editorial policy follows the research communication in the Open Science modus operandi. The Ornamental Horticulture journal is coordinated by the Editor-in-Chief, who is directly assisted by the Associate and Assistant Editors. Furthermore, for each thematic area, there are Area Editors, who coordinate the processing of articles in their areas of knowledge. The entire processing and publication process is online through a submission system and the evaluation is carried out by qualified professionals in the double-blind review system. The journal presents guidelines to authors, which are essential for the standardization and quality of publications. |
Preprints
|
Submissions of preprints from the following servers are acceptable: SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv and medRxiv. The acceptance of Preprints from other servers will be analyzed by the journal editors. The articles will be submitted for peer review. |
Peer Review Process
|
The work received for publication is initially analyzed by the Editor-in-Chief regarding its suitability to the scope of the journal and standardization according to OH standards. The paper is then forwarded to the Area Editor who, after analysis, sends the text to at least 2 (two) reviewers selected from among those registered in the journal's submission system. Using a specific form, the ad hoc reviewers make suggestions that are forwarded to the authors through the Area Editor and the Editor-in-Chief. The ad hoc reviewers can also suggest the approval or rejection of the article. If accepted, the analysis process can be repeated several times until the final approval of the text. A maximum period of 30 (thirty) days is established for each stage so that the final publication time is as short as possible. The journal uses the “double blind review” process to evaluate its articles. All articles are confidential and impartial, and authors and ad hoc consultants do not disclose/access personal information. The text will be sent for publication only after approval by the authors, reviewers, Area Editor and Editor-in-Chief. After approval, the text is sent to Editing, where it is reviewed by the Layout Editor and Associate Editor, observing its adequacy to the journal's standards. After layout, the text returns to the authors for final approval and only after the formal declaration of the corresponding author, the article is published. |

Processing Dates

The dates of receipt of the original article, review and acceptance, as well as the names of the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editor, will be informed in the final published version of the article. |
Fees
|
The journal Ornamental Horticulture has the following publication fees for accepted papers:
An additional fee of R$30.00 per page (Brazilian authors) and US$6.00 (foreign authors) will be charged in excess of the regulatory limit. The charge is only applied after the communication of acceptance of the article. There is no charge for submission or evaluation of the article. Access: Fees and Payment Guidelines in Documentation Required for Submissionfor more details. Payment of this fee is intended to subsidize the journal's operating costs. This fee will be mandatory for all works by authors who are members and non-members of SBFPO, editors or reviewers of the journal. EXEMPTIONS: For foreign authors who are part of the list of low-income countries, based on the Human Development Index (HDI), if they are unable to pay the publication fee, we ask that you contact the Editor-in-Chief (by email: editor.ornamentalhorticulture@gmail.com), for analysis of the demand. A document with the author(s)' own text, duly signed by all the author(s), must be submitted, with the justifications for the exemption. The journal will not use the publication fee as an impediment to the publication of accepted articles, since it has no commercial purposes. |

Policy on Conflict of Interest
|
Conflicts of interest, whether personal, commercial, political, academic or financial, may arise in the process of submitting and processing an article. These conflicts may involve authors, reviewers or editors, either explicitly or not. To avoid the occurrence of these conflicts and, above all, to prevent them from affecting the process of evaluating and publishing an article, the Editorial Board indicates that: The authors are responsible for the submitted text and declare this when signing the submission letter. Authors are responsible for identifying and disclosing conflicts, of any nature, that may have influenced their work. Authors must indicate in the manuscript, in the Acknowledgements section, all financial or other support (personal, corporate and others) that has been used or applied to the work. Reviewers must inform editors, and editors must inform the Editor-in-Chief, of any conflicts of interest that may influence their evaluations and assignments. And when applicable, decline the request for review. |
Adoption of Similarity Software
|
The Ornamental Horticultura Magazine uses the free plagiarism detection system of CopySpider, with a maximum similarity percentage of 3% (excluding references). We recommend that authors perform a prior assessment before the submission process. In this case, higher percentages (up to 10%) are permitted only when the manuscript is extracted from theses or dissertations by one of the authors. Once similarity is detected (including self-plagiarism), the manuscript will be returned to the authors with the analysis report, and will subsequently be rejected and archived. |
Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

The Ornamental Horticulture Journal aims to provide greater transparency and guidance to editors, reviewers and authors regarding the use of AI tools and resourcesin order to maintain the ethics, integrity, transparency and quality of publications.

Gender and Sex Issues
|
These are fundamental elements that must be considered in all phases of the research process. The editorial team of OH, in addition to the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines for reporting information on sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and results and interpretation of findings. In addition, OH observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board. The use of inclusive language is essential to promote diversity, equality, and accessibility in scholarly communication. We encourage authors to adopt linguistic practices that consider and respect diversity of gender, race, age, and other characteristics, thus contributing to a more welcoming and equitable academic environment. |

When the research article involves human beings or animals, the authors must mention in the manuscript methodology the approval number of the ethics committee of the responsible institution. approval by the Ethics Committee may be requested during the review process. However, submissions of Systematic Reviews of any nature (Traditional, Overviews, Umbrella Reviews and Scoping Reviews) will only be accepted if they meet the following mandatory requirements:
Submissions with a registration date after the date of submission of the article to OH will not be accepted. The Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board reserve the right to reject articles that do not demonstrate clear evidence that these principles were followed or whose methods employed are considered inappropriate for use in humans or animals. Other issues will be resolved by the Editor-in-Chief and editorial board. |

Articles must be submitted in English (American). All articles submitted to Ornamental Horticulture must not have been submitted and/or published simultaneously, in whole or in part, in another scientific journal or periodical. Mandatory elements All types of articles must contain: Title, Abstract and Keywords, Summary in Portuguese and Keywords, Introduction, Conclusion and References. Scientific article Article reporting an original work, referring to research results and submitted to the Editorial Board. The presentation format must follow the journal's standards for Preparation of Articles. Technical Article An article containing technical information, often without a research basis. It may present instructions on the use of techniques for a particular purpose and case studies. Review article Text written on a topic of current interest, at the invitation of the Editorial Board. The presentation format is free, but must contain the mandatory elements. The review article must have a maximum of 20 pages and a minimum of 30 references, corresponding to publications from the last 5 years. Articles with descriptions of varieties and/or cultivars Communication reporting the registration or launch of new varieties and/or cultivars. As a form of presentation, in addition to the mandatory elements (introduction is optional), it must contain: Origin, Morphological description, Adaptability (climatic tolerance, region, pests), Cultivation conditions (soil, growth rate, tolerance to sunlight/shading), Performance (productivity data and comparisons with commercial cultivars), Propagation, Uses, Availability (if protected, registered and addresses of laboratories and/or nurseries that supply the cultivars). |

Manuscript Preparation
|
The work must be typed in the Microsoft Word for Windows word processor (in .doc or .docx format), size A4 (21cm x 29.7cm), double-spaced, font: Times New Roman, size: 12, with a margin of 2.5 cm (left and right) and 2.5 cm for the top and bottom margins. All pages, as well as lines, must be numbered continuously. Each paper must have a maximum of 20 pages. It is recommended that authors be clear and concise, avoiding redundancy and unnecessary citations. Pages exceeding this number will be charged as an additional fee (Publication Fee). The article must be accompanied by a cover letter addressed to the Editor-in-Chief of OH, with the consent of all authors and a declaration that they are aware that by accepting the article for publication, the editors acquire broad and exclusive rights over the article in all languages and countries. It must also include a brief summary of the article and how this material adheres to the scope of the journal, justifying its submission to OH. Any inclusion, exclusion or change of authors or in the order initially presented must be notified by means of an official letter signed by all authors (including the excluded author). |

Figures and Tables
Format Figures must be saved in .jpg, .png or .tiff format with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. Figures must be written in Times New Roman font, size 10, without bold; they must be saved as a single file, in the indicated format. Images without text boxes and grouped images will not be allowed. Tables should be written in a text editor such as Word and saved in .doc or .docx format. Use only horizontal lines to separate the header from the content and at the end of the table. Save the files according to the name presented in the text, Figure_1.jpeg and Table_1.docx Different formats and files will not be accepted. Indicate, throughout the text, the position in which figures and tables should be inserted. It is recommended not to present tables of statistical analysis results. Chemical equations, symbols and formulas Equations cited in the text must be numbered serially and in parentheses (Equation 1). The equation numbering (Eq. 1) must be aligned to the right of the text. Below the equation, identify the symbols with the units. Citations and References

The article must present between 20 and 35 references and 60% of the references must be from articles published in the last 5 years in indexed journals.
Most common reference examples: If there is more than one citation in the same text, the authors should be presented in ascending chronological order, for example: Pereira (2014), Araújo (2016) and Barbosa (2018); or (Pereira, 2014; Araújo, 2016; Barbosa, 2018). The list of References at the end of the text will be presented in alphabetical order of authors. When there is more than one article by the same author(s) in the same year, indicate 2013a, 2013b, etc. The order of the items in each reference must be based on the standards of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards NBR 6023/2002 of ABNT. The accuracy of the references contained in the list and their correct citation in the text are the responsibility of the author(s) of the article. When applicable, include the DOI. Citations of theses and dissertations, summaries and abstracts, series, technical bulletins, circulars, or mimeographed documents will not be accepted. All authors of the scientific document (source) must be presented. The name of the journal must be described in full and should not be abbreviated. It is recommended to use single spacing between lines and double spacing between references. Do not use citations from other authors (example: "cited by..."). Always present the original reference.
According to international standards, the division of an electronic address, at the end of the line, must always occur after a slash (/). Insert manual hyphenation for links that exceed one line of typing.
Accesses made more than one year ago will not be accepted (check if the link is still active).
