Materials Research

Materials Research Ibero-american Journal of Materials is an international journal dedicated to experimental, theoretical, and simulation research on materials processing, structure, and properties. Due to the high demand of articles received for publication, from 2012 to 2022, the periodicity of Materials Research journal was increased from 4 to 6 issues per year. From 2022 onwards, a continuous annual volume was adopted for regular articles, along with one or two special event supplements. Its abbreviated title is Mater. res. (São Carlos), which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, bibliographic references, and captions. |
Open Access

Materials Research follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open access is the condition under which the copyright holder of a scholarly work grants usage rights to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY 4.0), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose. |

Publication Ethics
|
Before submitting a manuscript for publication, authors must ensure they have followed all ethical guidelines related to scientific integrity. They must also disclose any funding sources, such as research funding agencies. If applicable, the author must declare that ethical principles have been submitted to and approved by the institution's ethics committee. The author is solely responsible for compliance with good ethical practices in research. Materials Research adheres to the SciELO codes of ethics, including the Guide to Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publishing, the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the principles of the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), and the principles of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA).

Materials Research accepts submissions of articles deposited on the preprint servers Preprints.org, SciELO Preprints, OSF Preprints and arXiv. Submission is optional for the author, and the name of the preprint server and its DOI must be provided at the time of submission through the Open Science Compliance Form. It should be noted that the preprint submission option implies a waiver of anonymity. Acceptance of preprints from other servers will be evaluated by the journal's editors. |
Peer Review Process
|
Articles are evaluated by at least two reviewers, Brazilian or international researchers of proven scientific reputation, invited by the editors according to their area of expertise. After corrections and re-evaluations, articles are accepted if they receive favorable opinions or rejected if they receive unfavorable opinions. In specific cases, the editors may decide on the acceptance or rejection of an article based on a single review, provided it is well-founded. In compliance with Open Science, the journal emphasizes that at the end of the review process, the names of the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editor will be published at the end of the article. |

Article Processing Charges
|
The Editorial Board of Materials Research has decided to apply an Article Processing Charge (APC) to all accepted articles. Authors must confirm acceptance of the APC before submission. The fee set per article, regardless of its length, is BRL 800.00 (eight hundred Brazilian reais) or USD 230.00 (two hundred and thirty US dollars) and must be paid after final acceptance of the article. |
Policy on Ethics and Misconduct, Erratum and Retraction
|
The submission of a manuscript implies that it has not been previously published, that it is not being considered for publication in another journal, and that it will not be published in another journal in the same form without proper credit being given to this journal. In case of suspected misconduct, the article in question will be analyzed by a committee specially constituted by researchers in the field, including or not including journal editors, and if misconduct is confirmed, a retraction of the article will be published. |
Conflict of Interest Policy
|
Conflicts of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting a manuscript, authors are responsible for acknowledging and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is a conflict of interest, even if potential, the author(s) must disclose it in a separate signed document attached to the submission platform. Adoption of Similarity Detection Software
|
Materials Research adopts the iThenticate system for similarity identification through the Similarity Check service. A screening (Desk Review) is conducted by the Editor-in-Chief, who evaluates the manuscript's suitability to the editorial policy and editorial standards of Materials Research, and it will be rejected in case of inadequacy. Manuscripts with plagiarism or significant overlap will be rejected, as the journal considers this practice a serious ethical violation. Authors are responsible for the integrity of their texts and must strictly follow citation standards and acknowledgment of prior work. The journal does not establish a fixed similarity rate as acceptable, since the editorial board considers that each manuscript should be analyzed individually, taking into account the nature of the detected similarity. |
Adoption of Software and Use of Artificial Intelligence Resources
|
To ensure scientific integrity and maintain public trust in published results, the journal adopts recommendations on the use of AI chatbots (e.g., ChatGPT, Bard, Bing) in scientific manuscripts. Materials Research requires authors to indicate whether, where, and how Artificial Intelligence resources may have been used. Content created and/or revised through AI tools must be indicated in a footnote, specifying the software used, the modality (generative content, revised content, and/or translated content), and the date of tool usage (day, month, and year). Sex and Gender Issues
|
The editorial team of the journal Materials Research Ibero-american Journal of Materials, as well as authors publishing in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER. The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of directives that guide the reporting of information on sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and results and interpretation of findings. Furthermore, the journal observes a gender equity policy in the composition of its editorial board. |

Authors of articles published by Materials Research retain the copyright of their works, licensing them under the Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY 4.0 license, which allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, provided that the original work is properly cited. In return, they grant the journal the right of first publication. |

Journal's responsibility: The publication reserves the right to make standard, orthographic, and grammatical changes to the originals in order to maintain the formal standard of the language, while respecting the authors' style. Author's responsibility: All journal content and articles published by Materials Research, except where otherwise specified, are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution license type CC BY 4.0. The journal encourages authors to self-archive their accepted manuscripts by publishing them on personal blogs, institutional repositories, and academic social media, as well as posting them on their personal social media, provided that the complete citation to the journal's website version is included. Manuscript Preparation
|
Authors must present their materials with maximum conciseness and clarity. Extensive literature reviews will not be accepted; however, the state of the art on the specific topic addressed in the article must be clearly stated. Known procedures should be identified by name or bibliographic references. Acknowledgments of technical assistance for the research or indicating presentation at a meeting should be brief. The name of the corresponding author to whom questions about the article may be directed must be marked with an asterisk. Authors' official titles should not be included. Authors must provide an ORCID ID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID, http://orcid.org/) at the time of submission by entering it in the user profile in the submission system. We strongly recommend that all authors and co-authors comply with this request. Introductions should contain only sufficient supporting material to show why the work was conducted and why it is worth publishing. This information should also be addressed in the cover letter sent to the editor. Experimental results have lasting value and should be presented clearly and logically in a separate section. Results and discussions should be sequential. The inclusion of a final section at the end of the article is recommended, which briefly summarizes the main conclusions of the work. The Editor seeks the advice of experts in the research areas of submitted manuscripts. Reviewers must evaluate the originality, soundness, and scientific value of the work, along with some rationale for their opinion. They should also indicate whether the writing is clear and concise. Inadequate use of space only restricts the amount of useful material that can be published. The Editor, who assumes full responsibility for decisions regarding manuscripts, may not follow the reviewers' recommendations. Articles not accepted by the Editor will be returned to the authors, and there will be no communication about them with editors of other journals. |
Article Submission Format
|
Contributions will only be considered for publication when submitted through our online submission site, located at https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/mr-scielo. The file types accepted for submission are: .doc and .docx for manuscripts, and .jpg/.jpeg, .tiff, and .png for images. The first page must contain the title, authors' names and institutional addresses, their respective emails and ORCIDs, the abstract, and keywords. The text should begin on the second page. All manuscript pages must be numbered consecutively, including references and notes, tables, figures, and figure captions, which should be presented in this sequence. The submission must also include the original graphs, apparatus drawings, and structural formulas. Authors should indicate in the text itself or in marginal notes in the typed text where tables and figures should be inserted. Special attention is particularly directed to the requirement that all nomenclature must be consistent, clear, unambiguous, and comply with the nomenclature rules established by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, the International Union of Biochemistry, the Abstracting Service (see Chemical Abstracts Index Guide, 1987), the Committee on Nomenclature of the American Chemical Society, or other appropriate bodies. Language and Style: All articles must be submitted in English, double-spaced and typed on A4 paper (209 x 296 mm), with Times New Roman font size 12 and wide top, bottom, and left margins (~2.5 cm). In general, the typed text of articles should follow the conventional format: title, authors' names and complete affiliations, abstract, introduction, literature review, experimental, simulation or calculation procedures, results and discussion, conclusions, acknowledgments, references, tables, figure captions, and figures. Letters are restricted to reports of urgent, significant, or unusual interest and must be no more than 1,000 words or equivalent. A statement from the authors explaining why the manuscript meets these criteria will be helpful to the Editor. Letters will not be accepted if, in the Editor's opinion, the main content has already been disclosed or disseminated through any other means of communication. When estimating the size of a Letter, an average-sized figure is counted as 100 words, and formulas and separate lines of a table are counted as 8 words per line, including headings and horizontal lines. The title, authors' names, and references are not counted. Title: Must be brief and convey the content of the article. Abstract: An Abstract (in English) must be included. It should be short, with a maximum of 150 words for an Article and 50 words for Letters, and should contain only numerical and factual data. Keywords: Authors must indicate at least three keywords. Funding Statement: Authors must declare any type of funding the research received. Sources of support for the work must be informed, including names of sponsors, contract number (if any), along with explanations of the role of these sources. DOI (Digital Object Identifier) in Published Manuscripts: All approved works will receive their Digital Object Identifier (DOI) upon final publication in the journal Materials Research. |
Digital Assets
|
Illustrations: All necessary illustrations must be submitted with at least 300 dots per inch (600 dpi is recommended). Graphs and diagrams should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals in the order they appear in the text. Submitted illustrations will be reduced and reproduced directly in the published article; therefore, authors should take special care to ensure that all letters in an illustration (especially the smaller ones) are clearly legible. Figures must be submitted in .jpg/.jpeg, .tif, .png, etc. formats. Images in .doc or .pdf files are compressed and this causes them to lose resolution, which is why it is so important that they be submitted in separate files. Complex figures or those with multiple panels (such as (a) and (b)) should be submitted in a single file, rather than separately (example). Tables: Each table must be typed or printed on a separate page and must have a caption, in addition to its sequence number. Photographs: Photographs must be submitted with at least 300 dots per inch (600 dpi is recommended), high contrast, and as positives. When necessary, the scale should be drawn on the photograph itself, not below it. Color photographs may be published at an additional cost. Figure Captions: Must provide sufficient information to make the illustration understandable. |
Citations and References
|
Bibliography: Citations and references must follow the Vancouver style; citations in the text are indicated by Arabic numerals (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9). Each reference must have a unique number corresponding to the order in which it is cited. When the same work is referenced more than once, use the same number each time (see examples below). Reference numbers in the text should be typed as superscripts, without parentheses. Cited literature must be printed on a separate page (double-spaced) and listed in the order it appears in the text. Example citation and reference model: The selection of alloys for coronary stents involves balancing mechanical properties and biocompatibility, both of which are critical for ensuring their functionality and safety.
