Brief Background
|
The Journal of Microwaves, Optoelectronics and Electromagnetic Applications (JMOe) is a scientific journal published by the scientific associations "Brazilian Microwave and Optoelectronics Society" (SBMO) and "Brazilian Society of Electromagnetism" (SBMag). It is a fully electronic publication whose objective is to disseminate technical and scientific knowledge in the fields of Microwaves, Optoelectronics, and Applied Electromagnetism. The journal is published quarterly. Submitted articles undergo review by at least two reviewers (typically one Brazilian and one foreign) from the technical field of the research. Accepted and published articles are original and available for open access with download via internet. Authors retain copyright and distribution rights. The JMOe was created by the SBMO in 1996 under the title Journal of Microwaves and Optoelectronics (JMO). It was one of the first electronic scientific journals published in Brazil. Its first issue was published in May 1997, and the first ISSN number was obtained in 2005. It remained an exclusive publication of SBMO until 2008, when it became a joint publication of SBMO and SBMag. At that time, its title was changed to the current one. In 2010, the JMOe’s ISSN number was also changed to the current one. |
Open Access

This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted online access (including no financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open Access is the condition under which the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, crawl them for indexing, feed them as data to software, or use them for any other legal purpose. |
Open Science Compliance
|
JMOe embraces Open Science, a global movement that aims primarily to make knowledge generated from scientific research open and shared with the global scientific community. In addition to providing open access to published research results, in accordance with the principles of Open Science, JMOe makes public the procedures to be followed by editors, reviewers, and authors regarding issues, such as the article evaluation process, recording in the article of each authors contribution to the research, acceptance of data sharing, disclosure in the article regarding the availability of supplementary and/or additional data and information on tools for accessing such data, publication of the names of the editors responsible for evaluating and approving the article, publication of errata when errors or omissions in a published article are identified, and, likewise, cases of retraction. Additionally, articles must be submitted with the Open Science Compliance Form completed as a supplementary file, in which the author indicates whether the article cites data, program codes, and other materials complementary to the articles. If so, the respective URLs must be provided to make them accessible. In accordance with the principles of Open Science, the Journal allows the corresponding author to submit the article, preferably to the SciELO Preprints server, either at the time of submission or subsequently. |
Ethics in Publication

Focus and Scope

The publication’s areas of interest include electromagnetic field analysis, computer - aided design (CAD), microwave technology, photonic technology, packaging, integration, and testing, millimeter-wave and optical technologies, applied electromagnetics, and other topics such as education, industrial, biological, and medical applications, optical and microwave, wireless communication systems, antennas, optical services and networks, optical and microwave sensors, among others. Finally, JMOe publishes only original and complete scientific articles. The journal’s audience is the national (Brazil) and international scientific community in related fields. |

Preprints deposited on the SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv, and medRxiv servers are accepted. The acceptance of preprints from other servers will depend on evaluation by the editors. All articles published by JMOe receive a unique DOI, assigned by the publisher. Authors are responsible for the content of their articles and retain their copyright, licensing them under the Creative Commons Attribution CC BY 4.0 license. |
Peer Review Process
|
Articles submitted to JMOe are numbered by the electronic management system and analyzed by the editors. If they are in the adequate format, the articles begin the review process. Next, at least two researchers (usually one Brazilian and one foreign) from the article’s technical field are selected, and the electronic management system sends them a link providing access to the article and the review form, requesting that they review it. Reviewers have one week to indicate whether they will conduct the review or not. If they decline, new reviewers are selected and asked to review the article. At the conclusion of the reviews (around one month), if the reviews are consistent and the editors agree with them, the authors are informed of the result. In the case of two conflicting reviews, the article is sent to a third reviewer. If the paper has approved, a final formatting adjustment to the article may be requested (or not, depending on the situation), after which it proceeds to publication. If the result is a request for resubmission, the authors are notified, receive the reviewers’ comments, and have approximately one month to upload the article with the changes. The article will be reviewed by the same reviewers again to verify if the comments have been addressed and, in consequence, if the article can be accepted. When the article is rejected, the authors are informed and receive the reviewers’ comments for understanding the reasons for this outcome. The Associate Editors contact the authors and reviewers through the electronic management system. The other members of the Editorial Board assist by recommending reviewers for the articles, advising on ethical issues, helping with the final decision on the evaluation outcome, and, occasionally, participating as reviewers. Every two years, the Brazilian Microwave and Optoelectronics Society (SBMO) organizes the Brazilian Symposium on Microwaves and Optoelectronics. The authors of the highest-ranked articles at this event are invited to submit an extended version of these articles to JMOe. In this case, the review process for these extended versions is entirely conducted by guest editors following the journal’s standards. Finally, in the publication of the final article, JMOe chooses to include the name of the associate editor responsible for the evaluation. |

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy
|
JMOe adopts the highest ethical standards in the management of articles, involving editors, reviewers, and authors. The following guidelines are adopted as references: "SciELO Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication," "Principles of Transparency and Good Practice in Academic Publications" recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), and the guidelines of the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA). Additionally, JMOe allows Errata or Retraction Notices publication depending on the situation and in accordance with COPE’s Retraction Guidelines, only with the approval of the editors and all authors of the article. In all situations, these notices are linked to the original article, which will remain available. Finally, readers who detect relevant errors in published papers are incentivized to contact the corresponding author to clarify any technical doubts. Policy on Conflict of Interest
|
Conflicts of interest may arise for personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial reasons. These types of conflicts occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have diverse interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of articles. When submitting an article, authors are responsible for identifying and disclosing any conflicts that may have influenced the work. If a conflict of interest exists, even if only potentially, authors must disclose it in a separate, signed document attached to the original submission. Adoption of Similarity Software
|
JMOe employs similarity-checking measures to prevent duplicate submissions, plagiarism, and other forms of improper content overlap. After submission by the authors, as a first step, the articles are compared using Crossref (iThenticate) analysis. This preliminary one can indicate duplications for analysis by the editors. When a high degree of similarity is identified, the article will be rejected, subject to a case-by-case analysis. The objective is to ensure the originality, integrity, and ethical standards of JMOe publications. |
Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

JMOe follows the recommendations of the SciELO Network about responsibility regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including generative models. Authors The use of AI tools by authors is permitted exclusively to assist with formatting and adapting the article to the journal’s standards. The use of such tools to generate technical material within the work, as well as content such as abstracts or the structuring of the proposal, is not permitted. Any significant use of these tools must be declared in the submission, specifying the tool used, its purpose, and the stage at which it was adopted. Editorial team The editorial team may, on occasion, use AI tools only for simple tasks, such as assisting with formatting and checking for duplicate references, for example. All decisions remain the responsibility of the editors, and AI must not be used for automated decision-making in editorial processes under any circumstances. Types of Documents Accepted
|
Submitted articles must be complete and contain original works with novel results, presenting real progress and significant contribution. Literature reviews, surveys, analyses of previously published material, etc., are not accepted. The articles must be written in English language and their submission files must be uploaded in DOCX and PDF formats. Articles should be no longer than 20 pages. Additional pages will be verified by the editors on a case-by-case analysis. |

Authors assume fully and shared responsibility for submitted and published articles, which must accurately reflect individual contributions. The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all contributions reflect reality. By submitting their article, all authors declare that they actively participated in the discussion of the results, the revision, and the approval of the final version, in addition to any other necessary work. Regardless of their contribution to the preparation of the article, all authors are equally responsible for the article. As a reference, use the 14 roles of the CRediT taxonomy.
