Journal of Inborn Errors of Metabolism and Screening (JIEMS) is a peer-reviewed open access journal dedicated to publishing clinical and experimental research in inherited metabolic disorders and screening, for health professionals and scientists. 

JIEMS aims to become a key resource for geneticists, genetic counselors, biochemists, molecular biologists, reproductive medicine researchers, obstetricians/gynecologists, neonatologists, pediatricians, pathologists and other health professionals interested in inborn errors of metabolism and screening.

This journal has been published since 2013 as one volume per year, with continuous publication of manuscripts.

The institution directly responsible for the journal is the Institute of Genetics for All (IGPT). The journal is the official journal of the Latin American Society of Inborn Errors of Metabolism and Neonatal Screening (SLEIMPN).
 

This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing virtual access, without restriction (including financial restrictions), to all scientific texts published by the journal. 

Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants rights of use to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy,  distribute, print, search or link the full texts of the articles, track them for indexing, pass them as data for software or use them for any other legal purpose.

Authors must complete and submit with the manuscript the Open Science Compliance Form. In this form, authors are asked to inform: 

(a) whether the manuscript is a preprint and, if so, its location;

(b) whether data, program code and other materials underlying the text of the manuscript are properly cited and referenced; and,

(c) whether they accept openness options in the peer review process Open Science compliance form.

JIEMS uses the COPE Committee on Publications Ethics guidelines (https://publicationethics.org).

We seek to protect the rights of our authors and always investigate allegations of plagiarism or misuse of articles published in the journal. Likewise, we seek to protect the journal's reputation against bad practices. Submitted articles can be checked using duplication checking software. When an article is found to have plagiarized another work or included third-party copyright material without permission or with insufficient confirmation, or where the article is challenged,we reserve the right to take action, including but not limited to: publishing an errata or corrigendum  (correction); retracting the article (removing it from the journal); taking up the matter with the head of department or dean of the author's institution and/or relevant academic bodies or societies; or appropriate legal action. All articles reporting on animal and human studies must include whether written consent has been obtained from the local Ethics Committee or Institutional Review Board. Please ensure that you provide the full name and institution of the review board and an Ethics Committee reference number.

JIEMS accepts manuscripts that have been deposited on a non-commercial preprint server, as
long as they have not been simultaneously submitted for peer review to another journal. This is an option for authors to communicate their research quickly and formally (either before or in parallel with submission to JIEMS).

On the Title Page, the author responsible for the submission must state whether the manuscript
is deposited on a preprint server and provide the corresponding DOI. This DOI will be published
on the manuscript if it is accepted for publication in JIEMS.

Preprints from the following servers are acceptable: SciELO Preprints, bioRxiv and medRxiv. The
acceptance of preprints from other servers will be analyzed by the journal editors.

Manuscripts must be accompanied by a statement of availability of the data used and generated in the research underlying the texts.

The final version of the approved article will be published with the name of the editor or editors responsible for the manuscript evaluation process.

Manuscripts submitted to JIEMS undergo a rigorous, double-blind peer review process. This ensures impartial and anonymous evaluation. They are initially evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief for scope and standards and by the Assistant Technical Editors for formatting and technical requirements.

At this stage, the manuscript may be rejected or returned to the author for adjustments. If the manuscript complies with the rules, it will be forwarded to the Associate Editor, who will assign reviewers to assess the scientific content. Based on the peer review, the Associate Editor makes a recommendation to the Editor-in-Chief, who will make the final decision.

The process can be followed by the author in the management system. All accepted manuscripts will be edited by our publishing team to fit the journal's format. Once approved by the authors, the manuscript will be published. In the case of preprints, it is not possible to guarantee the anonymity of the authors and, for this reason, the evaluation may be simple-blind or open. The option adopted by JIEMS is to publish the name or names of the editors responsible for the evaluation in the final article.

As a good practice, following Open Science to ensure security and transparency, JIEMS encourages the "sharing of the data, codes, methods and other materials used and resulting from the research that generally underlie the texts of the articles published by the journals".

The research data of the manuscript approved for publication may, from 2024, be stored in the SciELO Data repository (in progress).

It is recommended to store data observed, collected, generated to validate the results of the original research, whether raw data, processed data, audio, video, code, software, algorithms, protocols and methods.

No fees are required from authors for submitting and evaluating articles.

Upon acceptance of your manuscript, you will be charged the Article Processing Charge (APC) on a one-off basis. This fee covers the cost of publication and guarantees that your article will be open access.

Fees: An Article Processing Charge (APC) of USD 400.00 (USD 200.00 for first or corresponding author SLEIMPN members) will be charged upon acceptance of the manuscript. 

The APC may be waived by JIEMS in specific circumstances (when the first or corresponding author has been a member of SLEIMPN for 3 or more years), and by the Editor-in-Chief for invited papers.

Short Communications and Case Reports have a 50% discount at the APC.

JIEMS manuscripts are available online with free and open access. It is not necessary to ask the journal for electronic copy permission as long as appropriate credit is given to the original source.
 

The Archives adopts the principles of publication ethics included in the code of conduct of the
Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Ethical issues and/or those that could damage the journal's reputation will be evaluated and retracted by the Editorial Board.

In the event of misconduct, the retraction policy will be applied by the journal, in accordance with the Good Practice Guide by SciELO.

If there are none, indicate: The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest that could be perceived as detrimental to the impartiality of the reported research.

Please include any declaration at the end of your manuscript after any acknowledgement and before the references, under the heading "Conflict of Interest Declaration". If no declaration is made, the following will be printed under this heading in your article: "Nothing declared". Alternatively, you can declare that "the authors declare that there is no conflict of interest".

When disclosing any conflict of interest, the disclosure information must be specific and include any financial relationship that all authors of the article have with any sponsoring organization and the for-profit interests that the organization represents and with any for-profit product discussed or implied in the text of the article.

Types of Papers Accepted

JIEMS publishes original articles, short communications, case reports, technical notes, letters to the Editor and reviews. Editorials are also published by invitation.

Manuscript preparation

THE RULES DESCRIBED BELOW MUST BE CAREFULLY FOLLOWED.

In accordance with SciELO policy, the adoption of ORCID as an author identifier is mandatory. Therefore, JIEMS encourages authors to create their ORCID.

Submitted manuscripts are the sole responsibility of the authors, regardless of the opinion of the JIEMS editors. The veracity of information and bibliographic citations is also the responsibility of the authors.

All published articles must have a DOI number.

Papers should only be submitted for consideration after all contributing authors have given their consent. Those submitting articles should carefully check that all those whose work contributed to the article are recognized as contributing authors.

Language of articles: Only articles written in English will be considered. Authors whose native language is not English should have their manuscripts reviewed by professionals proficient in English. 

All articles reporting animal and human studies must include whether written consent was obtained from the local Ethics Committee or Institutional Review Board. Please make sure to provide the full name and institution of the review board and an Ethics Committee reference number.

We accept manuscripts reporting on human and/or animal studies for publication only if it is clear that the investigations have been carried out to a high ethical standard. Human studies that could be interpreted as experimental (e.g. controlled trials) must comply with the Declaration of Helsinki https://www.wma.net/policies-post/wma-declaration-of-helsinki/ and typographical texts must include a statement that the research protocol has been approved by the appropriate ethics committee. In accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki 1975, revised Hong Kong 1989, we encourage authors to register their clinical trials at http://clinicaltrials.gov or other appropriate databases identified by the ICMJE. If your trial has been registered, please cite this information on the Title Page. When reporting animal experiments, indicate on the title page that the guideline/law on the care and use of laboratory animals has been followed.

Patient consent

Authors should ensure that the following guidelines are followed, as recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: https://www.icmje.org/recommendations/. Patients have a right to privacy that should not be infringed without informed consent.

Identifying information, including patient names, initials or hospital numbers, should not be published, as well as photographs and heredograms, unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or guardian) provides informed consent for publication. Informed consent for this purpose requires that an identifiable patient receives publication of the manuscript.

Identifying details should be omitted if they are not essential. Complete anonymity is difficult to achieve, however, informed consent should be obtained if there is any doubt. For example, masking the eye region in photographs of patients is an inadequate protection of anonymity. If identifying characteristics are altered to protect anonymity, such as in heredograms, authors should ensure that the alterations do not distort the scientific meaning and editors should note this. Obtaining informed consent must be indicated in the submitted article.

All randomized clinical trials submitted for publication must include a completed Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) flowchart. Please consult the CONSORT statement website at http://www.consort-statement.org for more information.

JIEMS has adopted the proposal of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), which requires, as a condition of consideration for publication of clinical trials, inclusion in a public trials registry. Trials must be registered before or at the start of patient registration. The clinical trial registration number must be included at the end of the article's abstract. For this purpose, a clinical trial is defined as any research project that prospectively assigns human beings to intervention or comparison groups to study the cause and effect relationship between a medical intervention and a health outcome. Studies designed for other purposes, such as the study of pharmacokinetics or serious toxicity (e.g. phase I trials), would be exempt. More information can be found at www.icmje.org.

Medical writers

If paid or unpaid medical writing services are used in the manuscript, this should be clearly stated in the Acknowledgements section. If the medical writers meet the authorship criteria, they should be included in the list of authors.

Article Submission Format

Original articles should contain the following sections: Introduction, Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusions, Acknowledgments and References or similar. The articles must contain a minimum of 6 pages and a maximum of 40 pages.

Short communications, case reports and technical notes should not exceed 2,500 words. The word count does not apply to figures, tables, references or supplementary material and must be indicated on the main page. The limit is two figures, or two tables or one figure plus one table. 

Letters to the Editor should refer to content previously published by JIEMS and should not have more than five authors. They should not exceed 500 words and contain no more than five references. Additional material can be added as supplementary material online. 

Review articles should contain an abstract, an introduction to the topic, a careful review of the relevant literature, conclusions from the literature reviewed and recommendations, if applicable. The articles must contain a minimum of 6 pages and a maximum of 40 pages.

Title Page

The first page should contain:

Title in English: Title of the article (in bold), as short and informative as possible, without any abbreviations unless they are established and widely understood;

Authors' names. A first name, initials (if applicable) and surname for each author, including their ORCID (ALL authors must be registered with ORCID). The order of the authors must correspond to the order in the submission system. Carefully check that all names are spelled accurately and match the profile created in ScholarOne™, in order to avoid mismatches.

Affiliations. Name and address of the department or institution to which the work should be assigned.

Corresponding Author. Clearly indicate who will handle correspondence for your article at all stages of the review, publication and also post-publication process. And they must be the same person indicated as the corresponding author in the submission system. This responsibility includes answering any future questions about your results, data, methodology and materials. It is important that the email address and contact details of your corresponding author are kept up to date during the submission and publication process. Include the author's full name and address for correspondence (please provide e-mail and telefone).

Conflict of interest statement: All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence their work. 

Author contributions: Corresponding authors are required to accurately indicate the contribution of each of the authors in articles with multiple authorship by means of the do Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT).

Main Document 

The first page of the manuscript should contain: Title, Abstract and Keywords, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments (if any) and References. 

Title in English: Title of the article (in bold), as short and informative as possible, without any abbreviations unless they are established and widely understood; Abstract should consist of no more than 200 words summarizing the content of the article. Please do not subdivide the abstract into: Introduction, Objective, Results, Conclusion or similar. The abstract should be self-contained, and it should be assumed that the reader has some knowledge of the subject, but has not read the article.

Keywords: a minimum of three and a maximum of five.

Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion. In the text, citations should be presented in Arabic numerals, in brackets (Vancouver style). The text should be double-spaced and have a minimum of 3 cm for the left and right margins and 5 cm for the header and footer. Text should be 12 point standard.

Digital Assets

 Figures: Figures must be submitted as separate files. The formats for figures are TIFF or JPEG. They should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals. Figures in Word, PowerPoint or Excel format cannot be published. Only nucleic acid sequence data may be submitted in Word format. Line art must have a resolution of at least 1200 dpi (dots per inch) and electronic photographs; radiographs, CT scans, MRI scans, all medical images and all scanned images must have a resolution of at least 300 dpi. If fonts are used in the artwork, they must be converted into paths or outlines or they must be incorporated into the files. Color images must be created / scanned, saved and sent as CMYK files. Please note that illustrations generated from Office suite programs, such as CorelDRAW and MS Word, and artwork downloaded from the Internet (JPEG or GIF files) cannot be used. Cite the figures and number them in the order in which they are discussed in the text of the manuscript. Figure legends: Legends must be sent for all figures. They should be brief and specific, and should appear in a separate place on the manuscript page to follow the references. Use scale markers on the image for electron micrographs and indicate the type of stain used. 

Tables: Create tables using the table creation and editing feature of your word processing software (e.g. MS Word or Excel). Group all tables together at the end of the manuscript or provide them in a separate file. Cite tables consecutively in the text and number them in that order. Type each one on a separate sheet and include the table title, appropriate column headings and explanatory captions (including the definitions of any abbreviations used). Do not include tables in the body of the manuscript. They should be self-explanatory and should complement, rather than duplicate, material in the text.

Citations and References

References to documents should follow Vancouver Style, as drawn up by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (www.icmje.org). References should be numbered in order of appearance in the text and cited in brackets, with no space between the numbers: (1), (2,6,10), (11-15). Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references. Type the references (double-spaced) at the end of the manuscript. Cite the references in the text in the order in which they appear.

The names of all authors should be cited for references with up to six authors. For studies with seven or more authors, cite only the first six authors, followed by et al.

Journal titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the style provided by the National Library of Medicine.

Acknowledgements 

All contributors who do not meet the authorship criteria should be listed in the "Acknowledgments" section.
