Fruit Crops Science Journal is a scientific journal that has been edited by Sociedade Brasileira de Fruticultura (SBF) since 1978. Starting from 2025, the journal has adopted a continuous publication model. It aims at publishing Scientific Articles, Scientific Communications, and Literature Reviews (the latter by invitation only) reporting original and unpublished research findings in the field of fruit growing. |

This journal follows the Open Access model, providing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open Access is the condition where the copyright holder of a scholarly work grants usage rights to others using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution - CC-BY 4.0) allowing for immediate free access to the work and permitting any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose. |
Open Science Compliance

This journal follows the Gold Open Access model. The movement proposes guidelines for collaborative, shared, and public scientific practice. In line with Open Science guidelines, FCSJ adopts a series of practices such, as: open access; best practices and monitoring by its editors; and the use of its social media to publicize published works. Furthermore, it encourages the sharing and availability of content underlying the research and the results obtained, such as analysis databases, data collection instruments, computer program codes used in statistical analyses, and other additional materials. |
Ethics in Publication

Fruit Crops Science Journal commits to the principles of open access for articles by adopting the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 4.0) license. This approach maximizes the dissemination of articles and aligns with the policies of leading open access journals and publishers worldwide. Further information is available at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/. In alignment with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines, which are designed to promote the detection of plagiarism, misconduct, fraud, and potential ethical breaches, the journal advises authors to: a) Consult the COPE website for resources on research ethics for authors and editors; b) Ensure compliance with the following criteria prior to submission:
Initially, only submissions that fully adhere to the journal's standards will be progressed to the review stage; otherwise, they will be returned to the authors for reformulation. Compliant submissions are assigned to an area editor who oversees the double-blind peer review process, involving at least two ad hoc reviewers with expertise in the relevant field of study from both domestic and international academic and/or research institutions with a demonstrated record of scientific production. After the necessary corrections and possible suggestions, the article will be accepted if it has two favorable opinions and rejected when two opinions are unfavorable. It is important to note that, regardless of the decisions of ad hoc reviewers, the Editorial Committee, at any stage of analysis, is responsible for the final decision on approval of the article and the right to suggest or request modifications to the text, deemed necessary. Upon acceptance, authors grant the journal an exclusive license to publish the article in electronic format, including the use of accompanying images for promotional purposes on social media. |

Papers deposited on the SciELO Preprints server can be submitted to FCSJ, but the journal's Editorial Board will decide on the peer review process for manuscripts already published as preprints. Once the manuscript is approved and published by FCSJ, the preprint version must be modified to include a link to the final version published in the journal. Submitted papers must not have been submitted to another journal and will be sent to reviewers only if they fully comply with the journal's standards and if all authors have signed the Submission Declaration, stating: "The authors declare that the aforementioned work has not been previously published or submitted for publication to another journal and agree to the submission and grant the first publication rights of the article to FCSJ." |
Peer Review Process

The article arrives on the ScholarOne platform, the editor-in-chief appoints a subject editor; - the subject editor assigns reviewers who evaluate the work within 30 days, with double-blind review. - the paper is returned to the platform, and the subject editor makes the final decision. In alignment with Open Science, the name of the subject editor responsible for processing manuscripts is published in the final version of the article. |

FCSJ encourages the sharing of analysis datasets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, guidelines, and additional materials made available in open online repositories such as Zenodo, Figshare and OSF, if they cannot be published within the work itself. This information should be indicated in the manuscript. Consequently, articles reporting research should indicate and reference the availability of the content underlying the research and the results obtained. |
Fees

Fruit Crops Science Journal establishes the following fee schedule: a) Submission fee: Exempt b) Publication fee: Upon acceptance of a manuscript, the following publication fees apply: For SBF members (with the first or second author being a member): R$100.00 per page as formatted for publication. For non-SBF members: R$200.00 per publication-formatted page. Fees are payable upon receipt of the article acceptance notification. Example: An article that comprises 12 Word pages, when formatted for publication, may result in approximately 8 pages. Thus, the publication fee would amount to R$800.00 for an SBF member author, but R$1,600.00 for a non-member author. c) Additional Charges: Authors may incur extra charges for corrections not addressed in the proofreading stage, such as fees for the issuance of article errata. Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

In the event of bad practices being observed in the publication of articles in the FCSJ, the editorial committee will notify the authors, form a committee, and a process will be opened for their defense. In the event of bad faith being found, the article will be removed from the FCSJ publishing platform. |
Policy on Conflict of Interest

Article submissions must be made exclusively through the SciELO online publishing system: https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/rbf-scielo Upon submission, authors are required to confirm a declaration of no conflict of interest as a condition of submission. Conflicts of interest can be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. Conflicts of interest can occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting a manuscript, authors are responsible for acknowledging and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. Authors must identify in the manuscript all financial support received for the work and other personal connections related to its completion. Reviewers must inform editors of any conflicts of interest that could influence the manuscript's analysis and must declare themselves unqualified to review it. |

Gender and Sex Issues

The FCSJ editorial team, as well as authors publishing in the journal, must always follow (Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER) guidelines. The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, and results and interpretation of findings. Furthermore, FCSJ adheres to the gender equity policy when forming its editorial board. |

Fruit Crops Science Journal (FCSJ) is a scientific journal published continuously (starting in 2025) by the Brazilian Fruit Growing Society (SBF) since 1978. It publishes Scientific Articles, Scientific Communications, and Literature Reviews (by invited authors only) in the field of fruit growing, referring to original and unpublished research. Works deposited in the SciELO Preprints server can be submitted to FCSJ, but the journal's Editorial Board will decide on the peer review process for manuscripts already published as preprints. Once the manuscript is approved and published by FCSJ, the preprint version must be modified to include a link to the final version published in the journal. Submitted papers must not have been submitted to another journal and will be sent to reviewers only if they fully comply with the journal's standards and if all authors have signed the Submission Declaration, stating that: The authors declare that the work in question has not been previously published or submitted for publication to another journal and agree to its submission. Papers that address studies directly or indirectly involving human beings and animals, in whole or in part, including the management of information or materials in all areas of knowledge, must state in the Materials and Methods section that the study was approved by the ethics committee involving human beings and/or the ethics committee for the use of animals, including the name of the committee, the institution, and the process number. Articles that address experimental research will only be accepted for publication if they meet at least one of the following criteria: a) experiment with at least 20 plots; b) experimental design with a residual degree of freedom equal to or greater than 10; and a minimum of three replicates of the treatments. Scientific articles with research results obtained more than eight years ago will not be accepted for publication. Authors must provide, in the Abstract, Resumo, and Materials and Methods sections, the period and location (including geographic coordinates and altitude only in the Materials and Methods section) of the research and, in the case of experimental research, the experimental design, treatments, and number of replicates. Articles subdivided into Parts I and II must be submitted together, as they will be forwarded to the same reviewers. In compliance with the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines, which aim to encourage the identification of plagiarism, bad practices, fraud, and possible violations of ethics, RBF recommends that authors: a) Visit the COPE website, which contains information for authors and editors on research ethics; b) Before submission, authors must adhere to the following criteria:
- Articles containing data acquisition or analysis and interpretation of data from other publications must explicitly reference them; Initially, only submissions that fully comply with FCSJ standards will be forwarded to the reviewers for evaluation; otherwise, they will be returned to the authors for revision. Submissions that comply with FCSJ standards will be forwarded to a subject editor for double-blind peer review by at least two ad hoc reviewers from the research area, from national and international educational and/or research institutions with proven scientific output. FCSJ encourages the sharing of analysis datasets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, scripts, and additional materials available in open online repositories such as Zenodo, Figshare and OSF, if they cannot be published within the work itself. This information must be indicated in the manuscript. Consequently, articles communicating research must indicate and reference the availability of the content underlying the research and the results obtained. After appropriate corrections and possible suggestions, the article will be accepted if it has two favorable reviews and rejected when two reviews are unfavorable. It should be noted that, regardless of the opinions of the ad hoc reviewers, the Editorial Board, at any stage of review, has the final decision on the approval of the article and the right to suggest or request modifications to the text as deemed necessary. Upon approval of the manuscript, the authors automatically grant an exclusive license to publish the submitted article in electronic format, including photographs that may be used to promote the article on social media. All articles published in FCSJ will have a DOI number. |
Types of Documents Accepted
|
Scientific articles submitted to Fruit Crops Science Jounal must be original, unpublished, and submitted in English. For articles accepted for publication, the authors will be asked to provide an English version proofread by one of the companies accredited by the Journal on a list available athttps://fruticultura.org/revista. Although only articles written in English will be accepted for submission, the manuscript must also include a Title, Abstract, and Index Terms in Portuguese, which must come after the Title, Abstract, and Index Terms in English. Texts present in other items, including figures, must also be in English, and decimal places are represented by a point, rather than a comma. Names of Brazilian institutions such as departments, universities, and institutes must be in English. Articles must report studies in the following fields: Biotechnology/Genetics and Breeding, Botany and Physiology, Harvest and Post-Harvest, Sanitary Defense, Economics/Statistics, Plant Science, Irrigation, Processing (Chemistry and Biochemistry), Propagation, Seeds, Soils, and Plant Nutrition. Regardless of the type of submission, a maximum number of eight authors is permitted per manuscript. |
Article Submission Format
|
a) The article must be edited in Microsoft Office Word 2016 or a later version. b) Text: Times New Roman font, size 12. Bold and/or italicized words are prohibited in the text, except for the title, items, and subitems, which must be in bold, and the scientific names of plant and animal species, which must be in italics. Equations, tables, and figures should not be bold or italicized. Equations must be written in the MSEquation application. c) Line spacing: One and a half lines throughout the manuscript. d) Paragraph: 0.5 cm. e) Page: A4 paper, portrait orientation, all margins 2.0 cm, lines numbered continuously, that is, continuing from one page to the next. f) All items should be capitalized, bold, and centered, except for the Abstract and Resumo, which should be left-aligned. Index Terms and Terms for Indexing should be left-aligned, with only the first letter capitalized. Subitems should be left-aligned, bold, and only the first letter capitalized. g) Quantities should be expressed in SI (International System), and scientific terminology should follow international conventions. h) Tables and Figures (graphs, maps, images, photographs, drawings): - Tables and figures should be self-explanatory and 10 or 20.6 cm wide, with text in Times New Roman font, size 10, paragraph/single-spaced, and inserted immediately below the paragraph in which they are first cited. - Citations of tables and figures in the text: Figure 1; Table 1. Figures with similar titles should be grouped into a single figure, creating a distinguishing indicator. The letter indicating each subfigure in a grouped figure should be capitalized and marked with a period (e.g., A.), positioned in the upper left corner of the figure. Grouped figures should be cited in the text as follows: Figure 1A; Figure 1B; Figures 1A and B. - Tables should not have vertical lines, and numerical values in columns should be aligned by the last digit. - Figures should not have borders, and curves (in the case of graphs) may be colored, but must always have different caption markers. - To avoid redundancy, figures should not contain data contained in tables, and vice versa. For bitmap figures, the minimum resolution should be 300 bpi; - Title in English: with a maximum of 15 words, only the first letter of the first word should be capitalized. It should reflect the content of the work and not contain the words effect, evaluation, influence, or study. a) Name(s) of the author(s) and respective affiliation(s): - The work file sent at the time of submission must contain the name(s) of the author(s) with identification of their institution(s), immediately below the authors stating Institution, unit (department or collegiate), city, country, number ORCID. The last paragraph should present the objective of the research. h) Material and Methods: Must contain essential information that allows the research to be repeated by other researchers. i) Results and Discussion: The results of the work should be presented and discussed in light of the literature, using tables and/or figures. j) Conclusions: These should be written succinctly, without additional comments and based solely on the results presented. No abbreviations. k) Acknowledgments (optional). l) Author Contributions: Each author's contributions should be included using the relevant CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy). The corresponding author will be responsible for providing this information. All authors are expected to agree to their contributions. Any other contributions that do not meet the relevant CRediT functions should be mentioned in the Acknowledgments section. |
Digital Assets
|
Figures that include graphs must be created in Microsoft Office Excel 2016 or a later version. Images generated by programs other than the Microsoft Office suite must be 300 dpi in jpg, tif, or gif format; 10 or 20.6 cm wide; the title or footer must be typed in MS Word. - For figures or tables presenting regression analysis, provide, for each equation, the coefficient of determination (R²) followed by the coefficient of variation (CV). There should be no figures with curves with R² less than 0.60; in these cases, include the equation and its respective R² value in the discussion of results. For each regression equation presented in a table or figure, include the symbol for the significance of the coefficients (* or ** or n²), placing it in superscript between the coefficient values and the variable. Place a footnote in Times New Roman 9-point font in the figure or table stating the probability of significance of the equation's coefficients and the statistical test used; for example:**-Significant at p≤0.01 by the F-test. Each experimental point plotted in the figure should have, using a vertical bar, the standard error or standard deviation, and a footnote in Times New Roman 9-point font should indicate whether it is the standard error or standard deviation. This is excepted in graphs containing linear or polynomial regression lines (which must be accompanied by the equations and their respective R² values), or in graphs containing letters for mean comparison tests. |
Citations and References

References FCSJ uses ABNT standards. FCSJ recommends that eighty percent (80%) of bibliographic references be from journals listed in the ISI Web of Knowledge, Scopus, or SciELO databases, with at least 40% from the last five years. - Bibliographic citations of the apud or cited-by type will not be accepted. - Citations of articles accepted for publication, brochures, handouts, monographs, undergraduate thesis papers, technical reports, conference papers, dissertations, and theses will not be accepted. - In a given context, citations of more than one bibliographic reference must first follow the chronological order and then the alphabetical order of the authors. When citing multiple bibliographic references by the same author, their names should not be repeated; however, the years of publication should be separated by commas. - The article must have a maximum of 30 bibliographic references. There is no maximum limit on bibliographic references for contributions in the literature review category. The article must have a maximum of 25 pages, including tables, figures and references. Sequential Composition of Scientific Communication and Literature Review a) Scientific Communications should have a simpler structure, with a maximum of 10 pages, and should be continuous text, without highlighting any items (Introduction, Material and Methods, Results and Discussion, and Conclusions), except for References. b) A contribution in the form of a Literature Review should present the following sequence: Title in English, full name(s) of the author(s) with their respective affiliation(s), Abstract and Index terms; followed by Title, Abstract and Indexing Terms in Portuguese, Introduction, Items on the review topics, Conclusions, Acknowledgments (optional), and References. Examples of in-text citations a) Citation with only one author: Viana (2023) or (VIANA, 2023). b) Citation with two authors: Taiz and Zeiger (2020) or (TAIZ; ZEIGER, 2020). c) Citation with more than two authors: Silva et al. (2022) or (SILVA et al., 2022). d) When the author of the work is an institution/company, the citation should be its acronym, in capital letters: EMBRAPA (2020) or (EMBRAPA, 2020). e) When citations with one or two authors, with the same authors and from the same year: Viana (2020a); Viana (2020b); Taiz and Zeiger (2020a); Taiz and Zeiger (2020b). f) When there are citations with more than two authors, having the same name as the first author and being from the same year: Silva et al. Additional information on article formatting a) Capitalize all letters of an acronym; capitalize only the first letter of each word of names of institutions written in full. b) As for units, add a space between the number and the respective unit, except for percentages.
