Brief Background
|
The first issue of the Brazilian Journal of Biology - BJB was published in April 1941, under the name Revista Brasileira de Biologia (Brazilian Journal of Biology), following the formation of the Brazilian Society of Biology, with funding from philanthropist Guilherme Guinle. It was only in 1971 that the journal was published by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. Starting in 1998, the journal was published by the International Institute of Ecology, and in 2000, it adopted the title Brazilian Journal of Biology. |

The BJB follows the Diamond Open Access model. Readers may access, download, reproduce, copy, distribute, and print published articles in their entirety at no cost. Authors are encouraged to make research data available directly within the article or in open access repositories to enable replicability of studies. More information about research data is available in the section "Instructions for Authors – Data Availability Statement." The date of submission and approval of manuscripts, as well as the name of the Associate Editor responsible for the review process, will be indicated in the article. Ethics in Publication

The Brazilian Journal of Biology is aligned with the best practice recommendations of the SciELO Brazil Good Practice Guide for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publishing and with the recommendations for editorial team members, reviewers, and authors described in the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Good Practice Principles (Core Practices) and the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) principles. Authors must comply with ethical standards regarding scientific integrity and best practices when preparing and submitting their manuscripts to the BJB. Works involving sampling or testing with animals, as well as human volunteers, for example, environmental perception analysis, must be submitted for approval by Ethics committee. The name of the committee and the process number must be included in the “Materials and Methods” section of the manuscript. |
Focus and Scope

The Brazilian Journal of Biology publishes research results in biological and agricultural sciences: original articles, scientific notes, and review articles, in English only. The journal has a new section to receive scientific papers in the area of Climate Change on the following topics:
Articles submitted to the journal must be original and not submitted simultaneously to another journal. The Editorial Board coordinates the evaluation of articles for publication. Publication is CONTINUOUS FLOW. |

Preprints
|
The Brazilian Journal of Biology encourages and accepts the publication of preprint articles in repositories recognized by the national and international academic community. We recommend SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv, and medRxiv, which are open to the public for free reading and download. Acceptance of preprints from other servers will be reviewed by the journal's editors. This information must be provided in the Open Science Compliance Form and must be submitted as supplementary documentation. A preprint is defined as a manuscript ready for submission to a journal and deposited on trusted preprint servers prior to or concurrently with submission to a journal. This practice joins continuous publishing as mechanisms to accelerate research communication. Preprints share the same importance of originality in the publication of articles as journals. The Brazilian Journal of Biology recognizes the importance of new means of scientific communication and allows readers and researchers faster access to recent research results before publication. |
Peer Review Process
|
Manuscripts, submitted through the SciELO submission system (https://submission.scielo.br/index.php/bjb/submissions), must comply with the instructions for authors who will be initially reviewed, regarding scope, language, presentation, and style. The BJB recommends that researchers whose native language is not English submit their manuscripts to a specialized company or professional who is native to that language. Manuscripts are initially reviewed by the Editor-in-Chief, who forwards them to an Associate Editor, who then recommends the manuscript to at least two reviewers. The journal uses a single-blind review procedure in line with the latest open science principles. Reviewers are guaranteed anonymity, while authors' names are made available to reviewers. Reviewers submit their reviews to the Section Editor. After reviewers submit their reviews, the Section Editor can choose to approve with minor corrections, approve with major corrections, reject, or reject with the possibility of resubmission. The reviews are then sent to the authors. Authors must resubmit the corrected article within thirty (30) days, consisting of two files: one with all changes and comments enabled, ensuring that all requests made by the reviewers/Editor have been met, and the other without comments, highlights, or any changes enabled. Furthermore, authors must submit a detailed response letter indicating the changes made or the justifications for not complying with certain changes. If authors require additional time to correct the manuscript, they should contact the Section Editor through the Discussion panel in the submission system to request an extension. If the authors fail to meet the thirty (30)-day deadline and do not request additional time, the manuscript will be automatically rejected. The Section Editor informs the Editor-in-Chief of their decision, who makes the final decision. The final version of the approved article will be published with the name of the editor or editors responsible for evaluating the manuscript. In line with Open Science communication practices, the journal now adopts in its editorial policy the opening of the peer review process in agreement with the reviewer. Thus, authors and reviewers may choose one of the methods of opening the peer review process offered by the journal, and authors may also agree to interact directly with the reviewers responsible for evaluating the manuscript, when offered the option. Papers will be published in the order of acceptance by the Editorial Board, not of receipt. |
Open Data

The Brazilian Journal of Biology recommends the publication of research data related to manuscripts submitted to the journal. Supplementary data such as tables, figures, measurements, formulas, spreadsheets, maps, developed software, codes, audio, or other data used to validate the manuscript's results, if deposited in a research data repository prior to article submission, must be indicated in the body of the text. Authors can use their institution's data repository or choose a data repository from re3data.org, SciELO_lista repositories recommended or SciELO Data. Third-party data used in the preparation of the manuscript must be correctly referenced, in accordance with this journal's standards. Fees
|
This journal is online and adopts the Open Access model, aiming to expand the dissemination of scientific knowledge free of charge to readers. Upon acceptance, an Article Processing Fee (APC) is charged. This fee, updated in 2020, is R$ 2.500,00 per article and R$ 2.000,00 for scientific notes and erratum for Brazilian authors, and US$ 680.00 per article and US$ 400.00 for scientific notes and erratum for foreign authors. These fees fully cover the journal's editorial and infrastructure costs, as we do not rely on funding agencies. Editorial decisions are based solely on scientific merit; payment does not guarantee acceptance. All fee information complies with the good editorial and ethical practices recommended by the DOAJ (Directory of Open Access). Journals). There is no submission fee, and there is no exemption policy. Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

The Brazilian Journal of Biology adheres to the COPE guidelines regarding Ethics and Misconduct Policies. Errata are possible when errors, corrections, or modifications are identified in articles caused by editing, typing, authorship errors, affiliation errors, bibliographic references, and numerical errors in tables (as long as they do not affect the analysis or main conclusions). We encourage all users to report any errors to the editorial team. Retractions will be published in cases of fraud, plagiarism, unethical conduct, and serious errors that invalidate results or conclusions, in accordance with the SciELO Good Practices Guide. Retraction requests should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief at bjb@bjb.com.br, duly described and documented. |
Policy on Conflict of Interest

Authors, reviewers, and editors must always disclose any conflict of interest, if any, during manuscript evaluation. Conflicts of interest of a personal, academic, professional, political, or financial nature can impact decision-making throughout the editorial process. Authors must include a declaration denying any conflict of interest in their cover letter. Reviewers and editors must notify the Associate Editor and/or Editor-in-Chief if they observe a conflict of interest that could affect the evaluation of the article. |

Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources
|
The Brazilian Journal of Biology recommends the cautious use of artificial intelligence (AI) resources. AI-assisted technologies should not be listed as authorship. Authors submitting manuscripts in which any type of AI resources were used (graphic element generation, data analysis, etc.) must describe their use in detail in the "Materials and Methods" section. AI resources can be used to improve manuscript readability and language quality during the writing process. We emphasize that the use of these technologies should always be supervised by the manuscript's authors. We recommend adopting the Guide for the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools and Resources in Communication of research in the SciELO Network. |
Gender and Sex Issues
|
The editorial team of the Brazilian Journal of Biology, as well as authors who publish in the journal, must always follow the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines. The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of information about sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and results and interpretation of findings. Furthermore, the Brazilian Journal of Biology adheres to the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board. |

Types of Documents Accepted
|
The Brazilian Journal of Biology publishes original research results in biological, agricultural, and climate change sciences. The Journal accepts preprint submissions; however, authors are not encouraged to publish articles on preprint servers. Preprint submissions from the following servers are acceptable: SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv, and medRxiv. Acceptance of preprints from other servers will be reviewed by the journal's editors. If authors choose this form of publication, we suggest using SciELO Preprints, providing the access link in the Open Science Compliance Form. Submitted articles must not have been submitted to another journal and will be selected for evaluation by the designated reviewers and editors only if they fully comply with the Journal's standards. The journal publishes articles only in English. Review articles on general topics will also be published if previously proposed and approved by the Editorial Board. All papers approved upon their final publication in the Brazilian Journal of Biology will receive their Digital Object Identifier (DOI). |
Authors' Contribution

Authors should record their individual contributions to the article in this section, indicating whether they participated, for example, in obtaining funding, designing the research, reviewing the literature, obtaining, interpreting, and discussing the results, writing, reviewing, and approving the final version of the paper, and coordinating the research project. The contribution must include the use of the criteria presented in accordance with the Taxonomia CRediT recommendations. |
Manuscript Preparation

Originals must be submitted to the Editorial Board and comply with the following requirements. Works that do not meet these criteria will be immediately returned to the author(s) for revision.
Manuscripts must be accompanied by a statement acknowledging the availability of the data used and generated in the research underlying the texts. |
Article Submission Format
|
Papers must be written concisely, with the accuracy and clarity necessary for complete comprehension. They must undergo spelling and grammar review before submission to the journal. The text must be finalized to avoid changes in the content and final proofs. Papers (including illustrations and tables) must be submitted in .doc or .docx (Word for Windows) format, exclusively through the "SciELO Submission" system administration interface (https://submission.scielo.br/index.php/bjb/submissions), along with the Cover Letter, Data Availability Statement, and the Open Science Compliance Form, and, if applicable, the ethics committee approval form(s) and supplementary research data. The work to be considered for publication must follow the following general recommendations: It must be typed double-spaced, in Times New Roman font, font size 12, and justified. The title should convey a clear understanding of the content and be as short as possible. An abbreviated title should be provided for printing in the headers. Author Names - The terms "Júnior" (Junior), "Filho" (Son), "Grandson," "Nephew," etc., should always be preceded by a hyphen. Example: J. Pereira-Neto (J. Pereira-Neto). Also use a hyphen for compound names (examples: C. Azevedo-Ramos, M. L. López-Rulf). Author names must always appear in their correct order, without inversions. Never use names such as "Pereira-Neto J" as author or co-author. Use "e," "y," "and," and "et" instead of "&" to link the last co-author to the preceding ones. Only articles written in English will be considered for publication. The Abstract and Summary should appear at the beginning of the paper and begin with the title translated into the corresponding language. They should contain the same information and always summarize results and conclusions. In general, the different sections of the articles should be arranged as follows: Page 1 - Title of the paper. Name(s) of the author(s). Authors' ORCID (Original Code). Institution(s), with address. Indication of the number of figures in the paper. Keywords in Portuguese and English (maximum 5). Abbreviated title for the page header. Footer: Name of the corresponding author and current address with email. Page 2 and following - Abstract (untitled). Summary: in Portuguese (with title); Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, *Data Availability Statement, Declaration stating that the research was approved by an Institutional Ethics Committee, **Declaration of Conflict of Interest, References, Tables, and Figures with their respective captions. |
Data Availability Statement
|
The Brazilian Journal of Biology - BJB requires authors to include a Data Availability Statement section after the Acknowledgments section or before the References section in any article reporting results from a dataset, even if the data used in the manuscript are not publicly available. The section, if applicable, should contain the name of the repository, DOI, and/or hyperlinks to the dataset, and access conditions (open or restricted access). Research data refers to the content (numerical data, text, computer programs, images, audio, videos, etc.) used or generated in the research and underlying the text of articles organized into files. Conflict of Interest

Authors must declare in this section whether they have any conflict of interest, whether financial or otherwise, that may have influenced the preparation or execution of the work. Furthermore, authors must declare this in a separate signed document attached to the article submission platform. Likewise, editors and reviewers assigned to evaluate the article must declare that there is no conflict of interest, whether financial, related (up to the third degree), or otherwise, that may have influenced the evaluation of the article. Papers that comply with the Instructions for Authors will be sent to scientific reviewers appointed by the Editorial Board. In each case, the review will be communicated anonymously to the authors. In the event of an unfavorable recommendation from a reviewer, the opinion of another may be requested. Papers will be published in the order they are accepted by the Editorial Board, not received. Proofs will be sent to the authors for final review (limited to errors and typesetting) and must be returned immediately. Proofs not returned within the requested timeframe (2 days) will have their publication postponed until a later date. Citations in the reference list must comply with the ISO 690/2010 standard. In-text citation: Use the name and year of publication: Reis (1980); (Reis, 1980); (Zaluar and Rocha, 2000); Zaluar and Rocha (2000). If there are more than two authors, use "et al." In the text, the author-year system will be used for bibliographic citations (strictly as necessary), using "and" in the case of two authors. References, typed on a separate sheet, should be listed in alphabetical order. References to journal articles should include the author(s)' name(s) and initials, year, full title, journal name (in full and in italics), volume, issue, first and last pages. Before submitting your work, prepared according to the previous instructions, the author should carefully reread it, paying attention to the following items: the authors' ORCID, shortened title for the header, submission of declarations (see supplementary documents), indicating the corresponding author with their email address, grammatical accuracy, typing accuracy, correspondence between the works cited in the text and those referenced in the bibliography, tables and figures in Arabic, correspondence between the numbers of tables and figures cited in the text and those referenced in each, and correct positioning of captions. |
Financing Statement

Authors must provide (if applicable) all sources of funding and support for the work, including the names of the sponsoring institutions or entities, and the project or contract number. Only legal entities should be listed. Individuals who supported the research may be listed separately and will appear in the "Acknowledgments" section of the approved version of the article. |
