Brief Background
|
The volume 1, number 1 of Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia was first published in 1986 after the first Brazilian Congress of Limnology that occurred in the same year. Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia is the official journal of the Brazilian Association of Limnology, an association without lucrative gains that was funded in 1982 (with the name Brazilian Society of Limnology) and have in its statute the mission to divulge the scientific knowledge of Limnology by a journal. The first numbers of the journal had biannual periodicity after the congress realization. After 1992 the journal had annual periodicity. Between 1998 and 2001 two numbers by year were published, and in 2002 and 2003 three numbers by year and after 2004 four numbers by year. After 2016 the journal started publishing one volume by year in a continuous flow. The short title of the journal is Acta Limnol. Bras. (Online), which must be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographical subtitles. |
Open Access

Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties through an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose. |
Open Science Compliance
|
ALB follows the Diamond Open Access model. Readers can access, download, reproduce, copy, distribute, and print the published articles in full without any cost, and ALB also does not charge any publication fees. Authors are encouraged to make research data available directly in the article or in open-access repositories to ensure the replicability of studies. More information about research data can be found in the section “Instructions for Authors – Research Data”. The submission and approval dates of manuscripts, as well as the name of the Associate Editor responsible for the evaluation process, are indicated in the article after the References section. Authors must download, fill the requested information and upload the Open Science Compliance Form when submitting their manuscript to ALB. |
Ethics in Publication

Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia adheres to the best practice guidelines outlined in the SciELO Brazil good practice guide for strengthening ethics in scientific publishing and follows the recommendations for editorial team members, reviewers, and authors described in the Core Practices document of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Authors must comply with ethical standards and best practices when preparing and submitting their manuscripts to ALB. Studies involving animal sampling or testing, as well as human volunteers, such as environmental perception analysis, must be submitted for approval by an ethics committee. The name of the committee and the process number must be provided in the “Materials and Methods” section of the manuscript. |
Focus and Scope

Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia publishes original articles, short notes, review articles, opinion articles and methods articles aiming to contribute to the scientific development of Limnology. The Journal covers a broad spectrum, including any theme of the ecology of continental waters from ecosystems such as streams, rivers, lakes, floodplains, swamps, reservoirs and estuarine zones. The scope of Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia comprises all aspects of theoretical and applied continental aquatic ecology, management and conservation, ecotoxicology, and pollution. Taxonomic works may also be accepted, provided that they contain ecological and geographic distribution information. Manuscripts submitted to the journal must be original with no simultaneous submission to other periodicals. |

Peer Review Process
|
The manuscripts, submitted through the SciELO submission system (https://submission.scielo.br/index.php/alb/login), will first be checked for language, presentation, and style. Scientists who use English as a foreign language are strongly recommended to have their manuscript read by a native English−speaking colleague. Manuscripts are initially evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief. As long as it adheres to the journal’s standards, the Editor in Chief forwards it to an Associated Editor, which indicates the paper for at least two peer reviewers. The journal uses the single-blind procedure in the analysis of the manuscripts in accordance with the latest principles of open science. Reviewers are granted anonymity, while the authors' names are made available to the reviewers. The reviewers submit their reviews to the Associate Editors that also elaborates a review based on the reviewer’s evaluations. After that, the Associate Editor can accept the submission with minor revisions, accept with major revisions, decline the submission or decline with the possibility of a new submission. After examination of the content of the work, the editor sends the reviews to the author’s reformulation. The authors then resubmit the revised article in thirty (30) days, comprising of two files, one of them with all the changes tracks and comments enabled, ensuring that all the requests made by the reviewers/Editor were addressed, and another one without comments, highlights or any tracks enabled, as well as a detailed response letter (example of response letter below) indicating the changes made or the justification for not making them. If authors require additional time to review the manuscript, they should contact the Associate Editor through the Discussion panel in the submission system to request an extension of the deadline. If the authors do not meet the thirty (30) day deadline and do not request additional time, the manuscript will be automatically rejected. Reviewers and authors may, by mutual agreement mediated by the Associate Editor, agree to the publication of the reviews of accepted articles (with optional identification of the reviewers), as well as to the disclosure of reviewers' identities to the authors during the review process. The Associate Editor notifies the Editor in Chief his decision, which then takes his final decision. After a paper has been accepted, a “proof print” of the article is sent (online) to the authors for a final revision. Open Data
|
Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia recommends the publication of research data related to manuscripts submitted to the journal. Supplementary data such as tables, figures, measurements, formulas, spreadsheets, maps, developed software, codes, audio files, or other materials used to validate the manuscript's results, if deposited in a research data repository prior to the article submission, should be indicated in the main text. The journal recommends that data from articles accepted for publication be deposited in the free ALB Dataverse on SciELO Data. Third-party data used in the preparation of the manuscript must be properly referenced according to the journal's guidelines. The Brazilian Association of Limnology (ABLimno) does not charge any fees for the submission, evaluation, approval, publication, and download of manuscripts in Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia. |
Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia adheres to the COPE guidelines regarding Ethics Policies and Misconduct. When information contained in the main sections of published articles (Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Conclusion) needs to be revised due to discrepancies or errors, an Erratum linked to the article in question will be published. Readers may contact the editorial team to report any detected errors. Retractions will be published in cases of unethical behavior, following the guidelines of the SciELO Good Practices Guide. Retraction requests should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief at actalimno@ablimno.org.br, duly described and documented. |
Policy on Conflict of Interest

Authors, reviewers, and editors must always disclose any conflicts of interest, should they arise, during the manuscript review process. Conflicts of interest of a personal, academic, professional, political, or financial nature may impact decision-making throughout the editorial process. Authors should include a statement denying conflicts of interest in the cover letter. Reviewers and editors should inform the Associate Editor and/or Editor-in-Chief if they identify any conflicts of interest that might compromise the evaluation of the article. |

The Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors use the Turnitin® software to identify potential similarities in submitted manuscripts during the editorial process. Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia emphasizes that academic plagiarism at any level is a crime. |
Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia recommends the cautious use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools. AI-assisted technologies should not be credited as authors of the work. Authors submitting manuscripts that used any type of AI resources (e.g., generating graphic elements, data analysis, etc.) must detail their use in the “Materials and Methods” section. AI tools may be used to enhance the manuscript's readability and language quality during the writing process. It is important to note that the use of these technologies should always be supervised by the manuscript's authors. |
Gender and Sex Issues

The editorial team of Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia, as well as authors publishing in the journal, must always adhere to the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of recommendations that guide the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, results, and interpretation of results. Furthermore, Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia observes gender equity policies in the composition of its editorial board. |

Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia is a journal by the Brazilian Association of Limnology (ABLimno) which publishes original articles, short notes, review articles, opinion articles and methods articles aiming to contribute to the scientific development of Limnology. Manuscripts should be submitted in English, and a title, abstract and keywords in Portuguese must also be included. We strongly recommend that authors whose native language is not English to have their manuscript checked by an English-speaking colleague prior to submission. There are six categories of contributions to Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia:

Form and preparation of manuscripts
|
Authors are entirely responsible for manuscripts and they do not reflect the opinion of the journal Editors. The authors are entirely responsible for accuracy of the information and citations. After approval, all manuscripts published in Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia will receive their Digital Object Identifier (DOI). Authors should prepare their manuscript for submission according to the following instructions. Manuscripts submitted to Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia should be original and not being considered for publication elsewhere. The article submission should be done in a single file by SciELO Publication System in the journal link: http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/alb/index. Text The following order must be used: First page: title in English (in bold type) and Portuguese, authors’ full name (e.g., Antonio Fernando Monteiro Camargo), affiliation, address, email address and ORCID address of all authors. All the authors should be identified by a superscript number. The corresponding author should be clearly identified with an asterisk (*) after their name, providing their primary email address for contact. Affiliation: indicate institution, institute/faculty, and department, city, state, and country. The names of institutions, cities, and states/provinces should be in the original language, except for the country, which should be written in English. Second page: Abstract (in English and Portuguese), Keywords and, if applicable, a Graphical Abstract. Third and following pages: text of the article (Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, Statements/Data Availability Statement and References). The text should be in Times New Roman font, size 12, 1,5 spaced throughout. The following information should accompany all species cited in the text: a) for zoology, author name and the publication date of the original description should be given the first time that species is cited in the article; and b) for botany, only the name of the author who made the description should be given the first time that species is cited in the article. Abstract The concise abstract (250-300 words) should be structured and itemized into the following topics: aim, methods, results, and conclusions. The topics should be highlighted in bold. Abstracts should be written in English and Portuguese. Four to five keywords (also in English and Portuguese) should be supplied and should be distinct from those used in the title. We strongly recommend the authors to prepare a graphical abstract. It should be elaborated in English including the main findings and ideas regarding the paper. It should be placed after the Portuguese abstract (minimum resolution of 300DPI). Tables and Figures Tables and figures should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals (Table 1, 2, 3 etc. and Figure 1, 2, 3, etc.). In the first version, the tables and figures should be inserted in the text as they are cited. In the final version, the tables and figures should be inserted after the references. Figures should be in high resolution (300 DPI or more). Tables should follow the model below, with lines between the header and the data and at the top and bottom of the table. We encourage the use of colored figures by the authors, as we only publish articles in digital version. Tables and figures must be mentioned in the text. Table formatting example:

Research Data
|
Data are defined as all measurements or information gathered, processed or created which allow making conclusions or to verify the research results. This includes raw or processed data, tabular data, text documents, lists, audios, videos, images, maps, review articles lists, statistical codes, programming codes. Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia encourage authors to publish this material into the ALB Dataverse, available in SciELO Data: https://data.scielo.org/dataverse/bralb. Only submit your data to the Dataverse after the acceptance of the manuscript for publication, after request by the Editorial Team. Third party data used in the manuscript must be cited in-text in the References. Data deposited in the Dataverse will receive a DOI after it is published, and only data linked/related to the manuscript submitted to ALB can be deposited this way. After submission on the Dataverse, data will only be published after a review from the Editorial Board and the SciELO Data team.
If authors wish to publish their data in the ALB Dataverse, they must submit the files in their original format at the time of manuscript submission. These files will be reviewed by the editorial team and reviewers during the evaluation process. After the manuscript is approved for publication, the editorial team will provide detailed guidelines for the authors to prepare and deposit the data themselves, following the SciELO Data Guides.
Freshwater Research and Environmental Database (FRED) Other data repositories can be found using the following tool: https://repositoryfinder.datacite.org/ . To assure transparency and safety, authors should display the data in a format which allows third party to open and interpret them accordingly. Confidential data, whether from the authors (primary data) or from other sources (secondary data), must not be shared or has to request the author`s consent to be accessed. Data Availability Statement Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia requires that authors include a Data Availability Statement section, after the Acknowledgements section, to any article reporting results from data sets, even if the data used in the manuscript is not freely available. The section, if applicable, must contain the name of the repository, DOI and/or hyperlinks directing to the data set and access conditions (free or restrict access). References
|
All references cited on the main text must be listed in alphabetic order according to the first author. If more than an article from the same author was cited, it must be referred in chronological order. The References section must begin in a separate page. Citation from dissertations, theses, undergraduate monographs, technical reports or abstracts for congresses should be avoided as much as possible and only in exceptional circumstances and with the reviewers and the Editors consent may be used. Citation in the text: Use the name and year system: Henry (2023), (Vitule & Pelicice, 2023), (Brasil, 2024), (ABLimno, 2023); for more than two authors use “et al.” (e.g. Saito et al., 2024). Citations from the list of references should follow the American Psychological Association - APA 7th Edition (modified). Citations in the text must be listed in chronological order (e.g. Bianchini-Júnior & Rocha, 2006; Angelini, 2019; Ferragut et al., 2022). References examples: Formatting articles: The academic paper references must be presented in the correct established way: names of the authors abbreviated (surname, given name), year of publication, title of the work, journal title abbreviated, volume, edition number and page numbers (if available) and DOI, without omission of any relevant information.

Chapter or Section in book: For book chapters, follow the order: abbreviated names of the chapter authors (surname, initials), year of publication, chapter title, “In” + names of the book editors (surname, initials), “ed”, book title, city of publication: publisher name, first and last page numbers of the chapter, and edition.
Book: Cite as follows: names of the book editors (surname, initials), year of publication, book title, city of publication: publisher name, and edition (when available).
Web documents and sites: References for online documents and institutional webpages should include, whenever possible, the institutional or individual author, year of publication, title of the document or webpage, indication of the medium “[online]”, place and responsible institution, retrieval date (“Retrieved in...”), and the complete electronic address (URL).
Juridic documents: laws, decrees, resolutions: References for legal documents should contain the jurisdiction or responsible entity, issuing agency, year of publication, full title of the legal act including its number and date, name of the official publication source, place of publication, retrieval date (“Retrieved in...”), and access URL.
Datasets For datasets, include: the author(s), year of publication, title of the dataset, repository name, dataset version (when available), and the persistent identifier, preferably DOI, or the URL.

Number of authors per article
|
There is no limit on the number of authors per article. However, simple articles with a modest amount of information and within a single specialty are expected to have few authors (two or three). Articles with data from different geographic regions sampled by different research groups and with the need for specialists in different knowledge areas (taxonomy, mathematical modeling, bioinformatics, landscape ecology, etc.) are expected to have a large number of authors (eight, 10 or more). ALB refers to the CRediT taxonomy to identify the contributions of authors. For example, in the preparation of a scientific article, five steps must be followed, but are not limited to, as following: 1. Elaboration of the question (what one intends to answer) and elaboration of the project with the sampling or experimental design. 2. Sampling or execution of the experiment. 3. Data analysis (laboratory determinations, preparation of tables and graphs, application of statistical analyses, etc.). 4. Interpretation of the results regarding the existing scientific knowledge. 5. Writing of the work itself. Only those who actively participate in at least three of the five steps must be in the authorship of the work. |
Cover letter
|
The submission of a cover letter along with the manuscript is mandatory. Cover letters must include the work principal contributions, suggesting three potential reviewers (full name, e-mail and why you suggested them). Inform in the letter the contribution of each author in the five steps of the preparation of the paper mentioned above (1. Elaboration of the project; 2. Execution of the experiment; 3. Data analysis; 4. Interpretation of the results; 5. Writing the paper). It also must include a statement declaring the conflict of interest of the authors in the preparation of the manuscript. |
Funding Statement
|
Financial support should be mentioned in the "Acknowledgments" section, specifying the funding organization (written in the original language) and the grant number. Other sponsors should also be mentioned in this section, including grant/contract numbers related to the funding. |
