The Anuário do Instituto de Geociências (AIGEO) is the official publication of the Institute of Geosciences (IGEO), published by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), since its establishment in 1977 by Professor Sílio Vaz.

AIGEO publishes original scientific articles and review articles covering geology, geography, meteorology, geophysics, geodesy, oceanography, archaeology, and other environmental geosciences-related issues. The mission of the journal is to stimulate and contribute to the dissemination of research results carried out in the areas of geosciences developed in Brazil and abroad.

All articles published have a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) assigned since the beginning of its edition in 1977, and they are available free of charge on the Journal's website and the SciELO website.

Since 2021, AIGEO has published one volume per year in the “continuous publication format”, just in English in the following categories: Original Scientific Article and Review Article.

Anuário do Instituto de Geociências follows the Open Access model, providing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal.

Open Access is the condition where the copyright holder of a scholarly work grants usage rights to others using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution - CC-BY 4.0) allowing for immediate free access to the work and permitting any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose.”

In line with the Open Science movement, Anuário do Instituto de Geociências clarifies that it follows the Gold Open Science model, which publishes scientific texts made available in national and international Preprints repositories (recognized by the academic community), as well as texts whose contents (research data) are made available in national and international institutional repositories recognized by the academic community. This information must be provided in the Open Science Compliance Form and submitted as supplementary documentation.

The Anuário do Instituto de Geociências strives for practices of respect for ethical conduct and adheres to the ethical codes of SciELO, including the "Guide of Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication", the "Principles of Transparency and Good Practices in Academic Publications" recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the principles of the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), and the principles of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA). In accordance with the purposes of Open Science, the Anuário do Instituto de Geociências allows the corresponding author, when submitting the article or later, to submit the manuscript, preferably, to the SciELO Preprints server. The identification of whether the article submission is a Preprint will be given by the authors at the time of submitting the article, attaching to the Journal's submission platform the form on compliance with Open Science.

Peer Review Process (Single Blind)

• All papers are submitted to the initial critical analysis, which includes an assessment of suitability and scope and a plagiarism check. 
• Then, the manuscripts are sent to the Associate Editor, a specialist in the field of work. If they have scientific merit and are relevant to their area of research, the articles will be submitted to the evaluation of at least two external Ad hoc consultants, one of whom is a foreigner. 
• After completing the review of the article, the reviewers fill out an evaluation form and send their suggestions and recommendations to the Associate Editor responsible for the article, who passes it on to the authors. The work is sent to a third reviewer in case of divergent judgments.
• The Anuário do Instituto de Geociências, in line with the open science practices, encourages the opening of the evaluation process. In this modality, the reviews can be disclosed before or together with the publication. 
• The institutional affiliations and identities of the authors will be revealed to the reviewers (Single Blind). The reviewer, in turn, must inform his preference when indicating his availability in review the paper. If the reviewers agree to reveal their identities, the peer review process will be Open.
• After the review rounds are completed, based on reviewers’ assessments, the Section Editor makes the publication decision. Rejected works may be returned to the authors with suggestions for reformulation and potential resubmission.
• The accepted papers are forwarded to the Text Editor, who will review the manuscript and indicate to the corresponding author the editorial recommendations (in notes in the manuscript itself).
• The names of the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editor are included in the document's final version.

The Anuário do Instituto de Geociências encourages authors to publish in open online repositories such as SciELO Data, data, codes, methods, and other materials used and resulting from research, if they cannot be published in the manuscript itself. This information must be included in the Open Science Compliance Form and must be submitted as supplementary documentation.

Since January 1, 2022, AIGEO does not charge any fee.

Based on the standards of ethical conduct of COPE, Anuário do Instituto de Geociências will publish, whenever necessary, Retraction, Errata and Expression of Concern about published articles.

Retraction is the formal withdrawal of a scientific article. COPE - Retraction Guidelines recommends that editors should consider retraction of articles in cases of:

• clear evidence that the finds are unreliable;
• plagiarism;
• redundant publication;
• unethical research.

In Anuário do Instituto de Geociências retractions are issued by the journal’s publisher, even if all or some of the authors do not agree. 

Errata is the document that aims to correct errors identified in an already published article. Cases of error(s) or failure(s), regardless of nature or origin, which do not constitute misconduct, are corrected through an errata. After publication, any error(s) found by authors or readers, when communicated to the Editorial Team, will be corrected, after due verification, through an errata, as soon as possible.

The Expression of Concern is a record of doubts about a published article regarding misconduct or plagiarism, used when there are not enough conclusive evidences for a retraction yet.

Anuário do Instituto de Geociências assumes the right to retract works that have been proven to have committed any type of fraud, after due verification. Ethical infractions will be judged by the journal‘s Editorial Board.

The denunciation of ethical infractions must be communicated through the email anuario@igeo.ufrj.br, by any person at any time.

Authors will have the opportunity to respond to any claim.

The editor-in-chief and the Editorial Board are responsible for preserving the ethical aspects of Anuário do Instituto de Geociências, resolving any conflicts with brevity and transparency, with the objective of maintaining the journal's credibility.

If a final version of a retracted article is posted online, it will be retained with clear notice of retraction. Retaining the original work ensures transparency of the published record, as online versions may have been accessed and cited by researchers before retraction.

Conflicts of interest may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts.

Authors, reviewers, and editors involved in the evaluation and processing of the article must disclose a summary statement of interest. If there is no interest to declare, then it should be mentioned: "The authors declare no conflict of interest." This statement will ultimately be published if the article is accepted.

Reviewers and editors involved in the process must disclose in a statement whether there is any conflict of interest involved in the evaluation and processing of the article. If there is a conflict of interest, even potential, it must be reported in a separate signed document attached to the processing process. This information will be published if the article is approved.

All authors, reviewers, and editors involved in the evaluation and processing of the article must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. Potential competing interests include employment, consultancy, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony, patent applications/registrations, and grants or other funding.

When editors have conflicts of interest, they should delegate decision-making to other editors.

The Anuário do Instituto de Geociências is routinely checking all submitted manuscripts for plagiarism and duplicate publications, using the plagiarism detection software: plagium.

If in more than 30% of the text the plagiarism is identified the manuscript is immediately rejected and the authors will be notified.

Artificial intelligence (AI) or similar technologies do not qualify for authorship. The author must carefully supervise the use of AI to assist in writing texts and formatting. Any AI tool cannot be included as a co-author. They must be described if used to create content or assist in writing or editing. If they are part of the design or formal research methods, they should be included in the Methods section.

The editorial team of the Anuário do Instituto de Geociências, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER. The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, and the results and interpretation of findings. Additionally, the Anuário do Instituto de Geociências observes the policy of gender equity in the formation of its editorial body.

Authors must attach a statement of approval from the institution's ethics committee responsible for approving the research.

The copyright of articles published in Anuário do Instituto de Geociências belong to their respective authors, who have the right to first publication conceded to the Journal. Every time the article is cited and reproduced in institutional repositories or personal and professional web pages, the link to the Journal web page must be provided. Authors retain full rights over their works published in the Anuário do Instituto de Geociências, with total or partial reprinting, deposit, or replication subject to indication of first publication in the journal under the CC BY 4.0 License. The opinions expressed by the authors of the articles are their sole responsibility.

The journal adopts the Creative Commons CC-BY 4.0 License, preserving the integrity of the articles in an open-access environment. The author is allowed to retain publication rights without restrictions.

Authors of articles published by the Anuário do Instituto de Geociências retain the copyrights of their works, allowing the articles to be reused and distributed without restriction as long as the original work is correctly cited.

The journal encourages authors to self-archive their accepted manuscripts, publishing them on personal blogs, institutional repositories, and academic social media, as well as on their social media, as long as the complete citation to the journal's website version is included.

Anuário do Instituto de Geociências promotes and progressively requires adherence to good practices of open science communication in the policies, management, and editorial operation of journals guided by SciELO.

• Types of documents that can be submitted to the Journal:

  • The Journal accepts the submission of Preprints, and preferably recommends the SciELO Preprints server.
• At the time of manuscript submission, through the Open Journal Systems (OJS) Platform on the website of the Anuário do Instituto de Geociências, authors must declare that:
  • The contribution is original and unpublished, and is not being evaluated for publication by another journal;
  • The conception of the work and the responsibility for its content are the responsibility of the authors;
  • Any links or funding agreements between the authors and companies that may be interested in the publication of this article and that do not have an ethical impediment must be declared at the time of submission of the manuscript;
  • The text follows the style standards and bibliographic requirements of the Anuário do Instituto de Geociências.

• The list of authors should accurately illustrate who contributed to the work and how.
• All those listed as authors should qualify for authorship according to the following criteria:

• Anuário do Instituto de Geociências adopts the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) taxonomy to accurately identify the contributions of each author. This helps us to assign proper credit to each of the authors with transparency.

• All manuscripts must be sent sent through the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform on the Journal website, accompanied by an Open Science Compliance Form.
• In Submission Step 1 (Comments to the Editor), indicate three researchers, one of them a foreigner (full name, contact email address and ORCID) with expertise in the research topic who can act as ad hoc reviewer. It will be up to the Editorial Board of the Anuário do Instituto de Geociências to choose the reviewers, and may or may not include some of the names indicated.
• Include in METADATA all author's names, affiliation, ORCID numbers, URL: Lattes link (for Brazilians) or Institution link. • The texts must be in English.
• Upload your manuscript in a Microsoft Word file format (.doc or .docx) up to 20 pages including figures, tables and bibliographical references.
• Each submitted file cannot exceed 3 Mb. If this is the case, uploading the text file in Microsoft Word and upload figures separately will be necessary.
• It is essential to use the template that has all the proper formatting for submission:
  • Text font: Times New Roman 12;
  • Page setup: A4 size;
  • Top and bottom margins: 2.5cm;
  • Left and right margins: 3cm;
  • Line spacing: 1.5;
  • Text alignment: justified;
  • Page numbering: bottom right corner.
• Acronyms and abbreviations should be in parentheses and be preceded by their full meaning when first used in the text.
• Title in English (in bold) and in Portuguese. Only the first letter of the first word must be capitalized.
• Abstract in English and Portuguese (Resumo) in a maximum of 25 lines and in only one paragraph. Abbreviations, notes, and references should be avoided.
• Three Keywords in English and three in Portuguese (Palavras-chave), separated by semicolons and the first letter of each keyword in uppercase. Preferably, the words used in the keywords should not appear in the title.
• We recommend the following division for original scientific article:
  • Introduction;
  • Methodology and Data;
  • Results and Discussion;
  • Conclusion;
  • References;
  • Acknowledgments (if any).
• We recommend the following division for review article:
  • Introduction;
  • Review;

• Section titles (Example: Introduction, Methodology and Data, Results, Conclusions, References) should be in bold and left-aligned. Hierarchize titles and subtitles in 1, 1.1, 2, 2.1, 2.2 etc. (all in bold). Do not place point, dash or colon after the item number, subitem, figure or table.

Digital Object Identifier - DOI

All manuscripts published in Anuário do Instituto de Geociências have a unique Digital Object Identifier (DOI), serving as an individual identifier that ensures their identification and guarantees perpetual accessibility on the internet.

Open Researcher and Contributor ID - ORCID

As a way of standardizing authorship, it is mandatory to include the ORCID iD of all authors at the time of submission. The ORCID can be obtained free of charge.

Figures:

• All Illustrations (figures, graphics, drawings, photographic illustrations, etc.) will be considered as Figures in the text.
• Figures must be sequentially numbered (arabic numerals), according to the order of appearance in the text (Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3 ...), with each accompanied by a descriptive title type above each figure.
• Figures composed of several illustrations should be grouped into only one file.
• The indicator letter for each subfigure in a grouped figure must be capitalized (example: A), positioned on the left upper side of the figure.
• The grouped figures must be cited in the text, as follows: Figure 1A; Figure 1B; Figures 1A and B.
• All Figures should be prepared in .jpg, or .tif, or .png, or .gif formats with 300 dpi resolution.
• Captions and symbols of the Figures must be appropriately sized to allow readability for possible reductions. Explain all symbols. Place graphic scales within the illustrations area.

Tables:

• Tables must be sequentially numbered (arabic numerals), according to the order of appearance in the text (Table 1, Table 2, Table 3 …).
• Type tables in TABLE mode and place captions above each table.
• Footnotes should be indicated by asterisks (*).

Equations:

• All equations must be typed in the text, aligned with the paragraph and numbered (Equation 1, Equation 2, Equation 3 …).

Citations in the body of the text (in-text reference) and in the reference list follow the Harvard style. As there are different versions of the Harvard referencing style, we recommend the use of Harvard Interactive Guide.pdf.

1. In-text reference:

• 1 author: (Lima 2020) or Lima (2020);
• 2 authors: (Lima & Silva 2021) or Lima and Silva (2021);
• 3 authors: (Lima, Pereira & Silva 2022) or Lima, Pereira and Silva (2022);
• 4 authors or more: (Lima et al. 2023) or Lima et al. (2023);
• In case of many references, organize them by alphabetic order, separated by semicolons: (Karl et al. 2015; Reynolds et al. 2010; Simon et al. 2002);
• 2 or more references from the same author: (Lima 2024, 2025) or Lima (2024, 2025);
• Multiple works for the same author(s) in the same year: add a, b, c ... after the year in both the citations and in the references. The a, b, c is determined by the alphabetical order of the Titles in the reference list: (Lima 2024a, 2024b, 2024c) or Lima (2024a, 2024b, 2024c).

2. Reference list:

At the end of the text, write the reference list in the alphabetical order of the surname of the first author. Authors must provide the link to the publication's DOI at the end of the bibliographic reference of all scientific articles, when available.
