Brief Background
|
The Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics (ABMVZ), published by FEPE-Editora, is dedicated to the dissemination of original scientific articles and scientific communications of interest in the fields of Veterinary Medicine, Zootechnics, Technology and Inspection of Animal Products, and related sciences. The Brazilian Archive of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics, published continuously since 1943, is one of the most important scientific journals in the fields of Veterinary Medicine, Zootechnics, Technology and Inspection of Animal Products, and related sciences. It is available online, in its entirety, without restriction and at no additional cost, at https://www.scielo.br/j/abmvz/, to disseminate scientific work carried out by Brazilian and foreign researchers, all of which is always subject to peer review. Therefore, it is partly responsible for scientific development in Minas Gerais and Brazil. Its historical continuity with excellence is thanks to the support of UFMG, which provides personnel and logistical support, without which successful projects such as ABMVZ would not be possible. The submission of works by authors, especially since 2014, challenges scientific editors and the editor-in-chief to be agile and judicious, in an objective manner, in the screening, scientific evaluation, and preparation of works approved for publication in a timely manner. This procedure makes it possible to make the scientific knowledge contained in the articles available to the national and international scientific community in a timely manner, so that it can make use of it. However, this growth in the number of papers submitted is perceived as very healthy, as it allows for an objective selection of the best articles for publication. The average time for processing articles, from submission to publication, varies depending on the nature of the article, the reviewers' demand for any corrections, the authors' response to the changes requested by the reviewers and the Editorial Committee, and the time required for final corrections by the English and Portuguese language reviewers and bibliographic standardization. The operating system currently in use for full monitoring of works submitted to the Publisher is a scientific publication management computer program, ScholarOne, which has been in operation since January 2016. The program covers almost all stages of publication, i.e., from manuscript submission, through analysis, evaluation by qualified peers, corrections suggested by reviewers and editors, and acceptance on the ScholarOne platform. However, from acceptance to the final stage of the process, which is completed with the publication of the issue for the scientific community, there are essential steps in the publication process that incur costs, including text review by specialists in English and Portuguese and bibliographic correction, as well as the conversion of manuscripts into XML language. These steps, outside the ScholarOne platform, are essential and incur costs, which is why ABMVZ seeks support from funding agencies, such as FAPEMIG. |
Open Access

This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants rights of use to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY 4.0), allowing immediate free access to the article and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, track them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other legal purpose. |

Ethics in Publication
|
Since its creation, ABMVZ has based its publications on a deep sense of ethics, which encompasses both the institution where the research is conducted and the seriousness of its associate editors and editor-in-chief, who strive to preserve the ethical profile of the journal. The number of the Research Project Approval Certificate (in accordance with current laws), involving experimentation with animals and, eventually, humans, must be mentioned in the body of the article and, preferably, in the Material and Methods section. In addition to the Ethics Committee on Animal Use (CEUA), the editor-in-chief and associate editors also keep a constant eye on the ethical principles that permeate all stages of the publication process. Furthermore, the editors adopt the general principles established by COPE. |

The Brazilian Archives of Veterinary Medicine is published by FEPE-Editora and is intended for the dissemination of original scientific articles and scientific communications of interest in the areas of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, Technology and Inspection of Animal Products, and related sciences. The editorial policy is to publish only original scientific articles and scientific communications that are of interest to the development of animal science. Only articles that have received editorial approval based on the recommendation of scientific reviewers in the field and/or the editorial board are recommended for publication. |

Preprints
|
ABMVZ accepts preprint articles for publication, based on the understanding that “A preprint is defined as a manuscript ready for submission to a journal and deposited on reliable preprint servers before or in parallel with submission to a journal. This practice joins continuous publication as a mechanism for accelerating research communication. Preprints share with journals the novelty of article publication and inhibit the use of double-blind procedures in manuscript evaluation. The use of preprints is an option and choice of the authors, and it is up to the journals to adapt their policies to accept the submission of manuscripts previously deposited on a preprint server recognized by the journal.” ABMVZ accepts articles previously deposited on preprint servers, such as Preprints.org, SciELO Preprints, among others. The submission of these articles is optional, but if the author chooses to submit them, it is necessary to inform the name of the preprint server and the DOI at the time of submission, using the https://wp.scielo.org/wp-content/uploads/Formulario-de-Conformidade-Ciencia-Aberta.docx. It is worth noting that the submission of preprints implies a breach of anonymity in the review process. ABMVZ accepts articles derived from master's dissertations, doctoral theses, and research previously presented at scientific events, provis ly that the texts are duly adapted to the journal's format and, when relevant, approved by the institution's Ethics Committee. To be accepted, articles must meet the criteria of originality, methodological rigor, and quality required by the journal. In addition, the text must present specific characteristics consistent with scientific literature. |
Peer Review Process
|
Articles submitted to ABMVZ undergo a transparent evaluation process consisting of the following: 1. Submission of the article on the ScholarOne platform; 2. Preliminary review of the article by the administrative office; 3. Forwarding of articles considered to be in accordance with the Instructions to Authors to the Editor-in-Chief; 4. The Editor-in-Chief appoints the Associate Editor; 5. The Associate Editor forwards the article to the Reviewers and monitors the evaluation process for recommendation or rejection, forwarding the article to the Editor-in-Chief at the end of this process; 6. The Editor-in-Chief forwards the decision to recommend or reject to the authors; 7. In the case of a recommendation, the author makes any changes suggested by the Reviewers and the Associate Editor and forwards them on the ScholarOne platform; 8. The Associate Editor reviews the changes and, when in accordance with the request, forwards the article again to the Editor-in-Chief for final deliberation; 9. Approved articles then enter the final review and editing stages. 10. The article is published. At this time, ABMVZ does not yet disclose the names of the editors responsible for the publication of each article. However, the process of disclosing the names of the editors is currently being implemented. The names of the editors are listed at the end of the article, after the References. |
Open Data

The sharing of data, codes, methods, and other materials used and resulting from research that generally underlies the texts of articles published by journals is implemented. As part of the adoption of Open Science guidelines, ABMVZ encourages authors to make their data, codes, methodologies, and materials available through reliable repositories, such as SciELO Data, where ABMVZ maintains its own Dataverse. Fees
|
The ABMVZ charges submission and publication fees for all articles by Brazilian and foreign authors, as explained in the Instructions to Authors. Currently, for national articles, ABMVZ charges R$60.00 as a submission fee and R$150.00 per page as a publication fee. For foreign articles, ABMVZ charges US$50.00 for the submission fee and US$50.00 per page for the publication fee. |
Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy
|
ABMVZ emphasizes that responsibility for the ethics and integrity of research, as well as its consequences, lies entirely with the authors. If evidence of misconduct arises during the evaluation of articles, the editorial team will conduct an investigation following the procedures established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) - https://publicationethics.org/guidance/flowchart/all-flowcharts After the facts have been ascertained, the authors will be informed and may be asked to provide clarification. If the article has already been published, confirmation of misconduct may lead to the application of editorial measures proportional to the severity of the incident. Proof of unethical practices may require the issuance of a retraction, whether partial or complete, resulting in the annulment of the article. All such situations will be handled in accordance with the guidelines of the COPE flowcharts. The final decision, after completion of the process, is the responsibility of the Editor-in-Chief, together with the Associate Editors. Policy on Conflict of Interest

Cases of conflict of interest will be dealt with individually, in accordance with the following. “Conflicts of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. Conflicts of interest may arise when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting a manuscript, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing any financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is a conflict of interest, even if only potential, the author(s) must disclose it in a separate signed document attached to the submission platform. Adoption of Similarity Software

ABMVZ does not currently use contracted similarity verification software. However, the journal is evaluating the possibility of contracting such a service as soon as possible. It should be noted that editors submit articles to free similarity verification programs on a sampling basis. |
Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

ABMVZ does not oppose the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools by authors, editors, and reviewers, provided that such resources are not responsible for the authorship of the text or the evaluation of the manuscript. Gender and Sex Issues

The ABMVZ editorial team, "in addition to authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of information on sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and the results and interpretation of findings. In addition, ABMVZ observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board." |

If applicable, it is essential to attach a copy, in PDF format, of the Certificate of Approval of the Research Project that originated the article, issued by the institution's Ethics Committee, in compliance with Law 11794/2008. The document must be attached in "Ethics Committee" (Step 2). The number of the Project Approval Certificate must be mentioned in the body of the article and, preferably, in the Material and Methods section. In works involving human beings, the number of the Approval Certificate of the Ethics Committee that analyzed the project must be included.
