Reversing cultural identity in the West: the 1935-1936 International Exhibition of Chinese Art in London: in philosophical perspective Liu, Yanhong

Abstract in English:

Abstract: The 1935-1936 International Exhibition of Chinese Art in London played a pivotal role in reshaping Western perceptions of Chinese cultural identity. This study examines the philosophical and curatorial frameworks underpinning the exhibition, analyzing how the transition from “Japonisme” to a distinctly “Chinese Style” was strategically curated to challenge entrenched Western stereotypes. Through a multidisciplinary approach integrating cultural philosophy, art history and museum studies, the study employs theoretical frameworks from Homi Bhabha’s cultural hybridity, Pierre Bourdieu’s cultural capital and Edward Said’s orientalism to interrogate the power dynamics in the representation of Chinese art. The findings demonstrate how curatorial decisions, deeply rooted in Confucian and Taoist aesthetics, functioned as both artistic and diplomatic tools, reinforcing China’s cultural sovereignty while influencing Western museological practices. This paper contributes to ongoing discourses in cultural diplomacy, transnational art history and the global circulation of aesthetics.

He Youzhi’s comic strip culture from the perspective of Toynbee’s historical philosophy Shi, YuJie

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This article combines case analysis methods to analyze He Youzhi’s reflection of social reality and the integration of traditional and modern values in his comic book creation through historical narrative techniques. The aim is to explore how artists use their works as a medium for cultural inheritance and historical reflection in specific historical contexts. Toynbee’s “Challenge and Response” theory provides an important framework for understanding He Youzhi’s creations, which holds that the growth of civilization stems from successfully responding to internal and external challenges. Emphasis is placed on the artists’ role in the historical context and their responsibility for cultural inheritance. The research results indicate that He Youzhi’s comic books are not only a presentation of visual art, but also a carrier of historical thinking and cultural reflection. Re-interpreting He Youzhi’s comic books can help promote cultural dissemination and exchange, and make them shine with new brilliance in a new cultural context.

An attempt to eliminate the alienation of labor: interpretation of Marx’s view of labor in the socialist countries’ legal practice Xia, Linglan Zhang, Maoyue

Abstract in English:

Abstract: Karl Marx’s critique of labor alienation remains a central theme in discussions on the exploitation of workers in capitalist societies. This study examines how socialist states - the Soviet Union, China and Cuba - attempted to institutionalize Marxist labor theory into their legal frameworks, focusing on collective ownership, the abolition of private property and labor relations. By employing a hermeneutic comparative analysis, this paper explores the contradictions between Marxist ideals and their practical application in socialist legal systems, particularly how bureaucratic structures and political interference shaped labor policies. While Marx’s theory provides a theoretical foundation for eliminating alienation through collective ownership, this study highlights how real-world challenges hindered the creation of a fully anti-alienating legal order. Furthermore, the paper extends the discussion to modern labor concerns, including the gig economy, automation and neoliberal labor policies, demonstrating how Marxist critiques of labor remain relevant in contemporary legal scholarship. The findings suggest that legal structures, inspired by Marxist thought, often failed to fully empower workers, raising questions about the viability of anti-alienation policies in socialist labor systems.

The Visual Art Characteristics of Chinese Qing Dynasty Export Fans in the Cultural and Philosophical Perspective Li, Yuting Yang, Yingli Huang, Kailin

Abstract in English:

Abstract: The Qing Dynasty export fans resulted from 18th and 19th-century East-West cultural exchanges. Their uniqueness stems from the development of an export-focused art culture during the Ming and Qing dynasties and the advent of East-West trade in the globalization era. These fans blend cultural and commercial significance, warranting extensive research. This paper employs a literature review and observational method, with “From aesthetic form to philosophical concept as its core logic, to visually analyze a range of export fans”. Cultural aesthetics research is shifting from inter-subjectivity to inter-culturality. Visual aesthetics in cultural philosophy maintain universality, now expressed as inter-cultural universality, suggesting that Chinese research is moving towards a cultural philosophy perspective, indicative of a necessary evolution in visual aesthetics.

The free aesthetics of Eastern philosophy, the artistic creation and the influence of Eastern philosophy on contemporary visual art Wu, Zhong

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This article discusses the key role of Eastern philosophy in the formation of contemporary aesthetic concepts and reveals its influence on artistic creation. Oriental wisdom pursues inner peace, inspiring artists to break the shackles of tradition and explore new art forms and expressions. Through in-depth research on Eastern philosophy, this article provides a new perspective for re-examining the relationship between nature and beauty, pointing out that nature not only has material attributes, but also carries deep aesthetics and life meaning. The evolution and transformation of Wei-Jin metaphysics Li, Chunxia

Abstract in English:

Abstract: As a significant school in the development of traditional Chinese philosophy, Wei-Jin metaphysics emerged from the intellectual contention of the pre-Qin era, evolved through the dominance of Confucianism during the Han dynasty, and eventually integrated both Confucian and Taoist thought during the Wei-Jin period. This synthesis laid the foundation for the traditional Chinese cultural landscape that persisted after the Tang dynasty, with Wei-Jin metaphysics playing a crucial transitional role. The evolution of intellectual history follows an inherent logic Specific historical contexts invariably shape the emergence of new ideas and build upon existing social thought and developments, addressing previously unresolved issues. Central to the development of Wei-Jin metaphysics is the debate between Confucian orthodoxy and natural spontaneity, reflecting the social turmoil and the time’s spiritual crisis. Scholars of Wei-Jin metaphysics endeavored to establish a new ethical value system. This paper explores the relationship between Confucian orthodoxy and natural spontaneity to elucidate the developmental trajectory of Wei-Jin metaphysics, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of its overarching characteristics.

Philosophy of Light: An Alternative Perspective on Zhang Zai’s “Qi-Based Learning” Li, Tengfei

Abstract in English:

Abstract: Zhang Zai’s “qi-based learning” contains extensive discussions on the concept of brightness (ming 明). By incorporating the core insights from the German translation of Zhengmeng (正蒙), this paper emphasizes the crucial role of light in understanding Zhang Zai’s thought and aims to interpret it as a philosophy of light. From an epistemological standpoint, Zhang Zai links qi closely with light, framing his philosophy as a doctrine of manifestation. Brightness, in this context, is not limited to visibility, but also encompasses the invisible xiang 象, which manifests through the light of shen 神. Zhang Zai metaphorically conceptualizes shen as a unity of giving and receiving light. In this framework, the generative act of shen is understood as the productive stimulation (gan 感) emerging from the undifferentiated foundation. Ultimately, this philosophy of light points to the spiritual realm of “right lightening” (zhenming 貞明), which refers to the penetrating perspicacity of Confucian sages who fully perceive the brightness.

Philosophical footprints in the evolution of art: an analysis of the flourishing of Yangliuqing woodblock New Year prints during the Ming dynasty Qi, Baicheng Liu, Minggang

Abstract in English:

Abstract: The philosophical ideas of the Ming dynasty influenced the social and aesthetic changes, as well as the folk beliefs portrayed in Yangliuqing woodblock New Year paintings. Confucianism and other neo-Confucian philosophies, which sought to restore moral order and ritual propriety, heavily influenced the courtly artistic elements that were adopted into these prints. The School of Mind, which was more focused on emotions and individual inspiration, brought a more free and secular approach to the art, thus making folk art more personal. Practical learning promoted the depiction of daily life, which in turn promoted a pragmatic view on art. The unity of knowledge and action (heart-learning), investigating things to attain knowledge (Neo-Confucianism), and the unity of heaven and humanity (Daoism) guided the thematic choices, application of techniques and social functions of these prints. This paper will analyze how these philosophical currents directly influenced the artistic transformation process in the Yangliuqing woodblock New Year paintings and their social functions.

The dual expression of virtuality and reality in the modeling of drama characters from the perspective of modern Taoist philosophy: a case study of Red Lantern Li, Na

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This paper analyzes the relationship between virtuality and reality in the modeling of drama characters, with a particular focus on the revolutionary opera Red Lantern, using modern Taoist philosophy as a guiding framework. Taoist thought, particularly principles like Yin-Yang, Wu Wei, and Ziran, emphasizes harmony, duality and the interpenetration of opposites, offering a lens through which character development can be understood as a process of balance and transformation. Through this lens, it is shown that the characters in Red Lantern transcend traditional stereotypes, blending historical realism and symbolic abstraction to create a profound ideological and emotional impact. The thesis of this study argues that Taoist philosophy deeply influences the construction of characters in Red Lantern, facilitating the integration of virtual symbolism and real emotional depth in a manner that both engage the audience and strengthen the revolutionary message of opera. This research illuminates how Taoism, often seen as a philosophical and spiritual framework, also shapes artistic expressions, making this opera not only a vehicle for ideological transmission, but also a rich source of cultural and philosophical reflection.

Integrating traditional Chinese philosophical thought and red music culture in Western Fujian Kong, Defang

Abstract in English:

Abstract: In contemporary Chinese music education, how can we interpret the efficacy of traditional philosophical ideas in the transmission of values? Additionally, what is the relationship between red music (RM) culture and traditional Chinese philosophical thought within the framework of music education, and how do these elements interact to shape educational outcomes? Therefore, this article contends that traditional Chinese philosophy can be modernized by integrating red music education. Furthermore, by embedding Western Fujian RM within the larger framework of China’s revolutionary spirit and cultural confidence through red music education, it not only enhances the comprehension of traditional Chinese philosophies, such as “rites and music” and “harmony between man and nature”, but also significantly contributes to nurturing students’ moral development. Through case analysis, it also provides a replicable “RM + traditional philosophy and educational practice” model developed in this study that offers a pathway characterized by Chinese features and local adaptability for ideological and political education within regional college curricula.

Interdisciplinary research paradigm of calligraphy and painting aesthetics and philosophy and its role in the construction of art theory system Wang, Dong

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This paper focuses on the dialectical unity of “skill” and “Tao” in Chinese calligraphy and painting aesthetics and its philosophical attributes as the ontology of art. Combining the multi-dimensional analysis framework of aesthetics, philosophy and traditional Chinese art, it aims to reveal that calligraphy and painting aesthetics is not only an important part of artistic creation and aesthetic experience, but also contains profound philosophical thinking. By placing the relationship between “skill” and “Tao” in the perspective of Chinese philosophical ontology and epistemology, it is pointed out that calligraphy and painting are not only a form of expression of visual art, but also a philosophical practice of dialogue between the subject’s spiritual world and the cosmic order. This practice uses “skill” as a medium and “Tao” as a goal to achieve the dynamic unity and integration of art and life. This paper not only helps to enrich and develop the theoretical system of calligraphy and painting aesthetics, but also provides new ideas for the innovation of art theory in the context of globalization.

Symbolic Symbols and Their Philosophical Implications in the Literati Paintings of the Song Dynasty Chen, Lin

Abstract in English:

Abstract: As an important art form in the history of Chinese painting development, the cultural status and ideological consciousness of Song Dynasty literati painting are far-reaching. This paper combines the analysis of specific works with philosophical interpretation to explore the symbolic symbols and philosophical implications in Song Dynasty literati painting, analyze how these symbols reflect the literati mentality and social reality in a specific historical period, and explore their inspiration for the development of contemporary art. The argument shows that the symbolic symbols in Song Dynasty literati painting are not only an artistic language, but also a carrier of ideology and cultural identity, reflecting the literati group’s dual response to political reality and individual spiritual freedom. Through the exploration of this system, the influence of literati painting on traditional thought can be better understood, providing a new thinking path for contemporary art to construct modern art identity through symbolic representation.

From Plane to Three-Dimensional: The Spatial Narrative of Landscapes in Carving Art Dong, Chenxi Zhang, Shunfeng

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This paper explores how bamboo stationery carving reshapes traditional Chinese painting and reflects spatial concepts in Chinese philosophy. As a three-dimensional reinterpretation of two-dimensional landscape paintings, bamboo carving not only preserves the aesthetic essence of traditional works, but also reconstructs spatial aesthetic principles, such as the interplay of ‘emptiness and solidity’ through carving. By extending the flat composition of landscape paintings into three-dimensional space, bamboo carving techniques create richly layered and deeply evocative narratives on the limited surface of bamboo. These works embody the philosophical concept of ‘unity between heaven and humanity’ (tian ren he yi) and achieve a harmonious integration of material form, visual expression and cultural symbolism. This paper explores how bamboo carving inherits the spatial concepts of traditional Chinese painting while innovating new methods of spatial representation in sculpture. It contends that bamboo carving offers a philosophical reimagining of spatial narrative, bridging the material and the metaphysical, and providing new insight into the dynamic relationship between form, void and meaning in traditional Chinese art.

Martial arts and dualistic philosophy: conflict, harmony and the search for balance Li, Fanghui Fu, Liang

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This paper focuses on how the reconstruction of moral self and spiritual freedom can be realized through the philosophical analysis of dialectical unity in martial arts practice. It examines how Eastern philosophies, such as Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism, inform martial arts, emphasizing the integration of opposing forces like mind and body, strength and softness, and offense and defense. By articulating a central claim that martial arts serve as embodied vehicles for ethical transformation, this paper contributes to contemporary debates in virtue ethics and philosophy of mind. It argues that martial arts, particularly Wushu, embody a practical philosophy based on the body’s phenomenology, grounded in the dynamic structure of Yin and Yang. This embodied dialectic fosters virtue by integrating affective, physical and cognitive dimensions of self-cultivation. Engaging with Western subjectivity traditions and modern body theory, the paper explores how martial arts transcend dichotomies, offering a holistic ethical perspective that integrates mind and body. Ultimately, martial arts emerge as a lived ethical practice of self-cultivation, resilience and harmony.

Liang Qichao’s feminist perspectives in the context of national crisis and modern state-building: an explanation centered on the ideas of “Promoting female education”, “Virtuous wife and good mother” and “Abolishing foot-binding” Chen, Shuo Chen, Yundu

Abstract in English:

Abstract: In the context of the late Qing dynasty in China, Liang Qichao framed women’s issues through a triad of initiatives: “abolishing foot-binding”, “promoting women’s education” and idealizing the “virtuous wife and good mother”. These measures sought to emancipate the female body, enlighten women’s minds and redefine gender roles-all aligned with nationalist reform goals. Informed by Michel Foucault’s biopolitics, Nira Yuval-Davis’ gender-nation relations and Judith Butler’s gender performativity theory, this study argues that Liang’s reforms-though freeing women from traditional constraints-also placed their bodies and minds under state control. While ending foot-binding and early marriage liberated women physically, it subjected them to the modernizing state’s biopolitical interests. Women’s education, though transformative, was designed mainly to develop vocational skills rather than foster autonomy. The “virtuous wife and good mother” ideal ultimately reinforced maternal ideals within a nationalist narrative, revealing a deep adherence to traditional gender ethics. This reflects the complex social, historical and cultural contexts of the cultural transformation of late Qing and its multiple influences on Liang’s feminist perspectives that are full of contradictions, conflicts and theoretical tensions.

Realizing legal modernization through Marxist philosophy: theoretical basis and institutional evolution Tang, Shuyuan

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This study addresses a critical gap in the literature by providing a philosophical analysis of China’s legal system modernization. Moving beyond conventional institutional or technical accounts, this paper analyzes the underlying logic of this transformation through Marxist philosophy. Grounded in dialectical and historical materialism, the analysis employs practical rationality as a core concept to argue that China’s legal modernization is not a simple adaptation of Western models, but an organic and evolving process rooted in the nation’s unique social practices and historical contradictions. This process is characterized by three core dimensions: (1) the institutionalization of human-centered values, (2) the alignment of legal frameworks with evolving productive forces, and (3) the advancement of national governance capacity. By examining key institutional developments, such as the codification of the Civil Code and procedural justice reforms, the paper concludes that China’s path exemplifies the practical application of Marxist legal theory. This approach not only innovates upon socialist legal principles, but also offers unique philosophical insights and practical knowledge to the global discourse on legal civilization.

The Historical Evolution, Ethical Implications, and Essence of Public Order and Cultivated Customs Kang, Changyue

Abstract in English:

Abstract: The relationship between law and morality remains a subject of debate. In contemporary China, the ideal of the rule of law coexists alongside the enduring tradition of moral governance. While the principle of public order and cultivated customs are recognized as a moral-legal norm, its unclear boundaries render its practical application complex. Scholars have engaged in extensive debates regarding its definition, scope and legal applications, but philosophical exploration of its deeper meaning remains limited. Therefore, this paper traces the historical evolution of the principle, outlines its current areas of application, and elucidates its ethical significance and core values. This paper argues that public order and good morals align with the value orientation of the law, manifested through four ethical dimensions: respect, freedom, responsibility and harmony. When collective interests conflict with individual rights, these fundamental values should take precedence. Additionally, this paper offers an important research perspective for the development of modern legal ethics.

From Confucian Reinterpretation to Legalist Autonomy - The Evolution of the Studies on Han Fei in Modern China Chen, Lin

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This paper traces how the study on Han Fei moved from marginal scholarship to a self-conscious system of thought. It identifies three stages. First, the Confucian readings that recast Han Fei as a supplement to moral order. Second, the twentieth-century philological and theoretical work that turned scattered materials into a coherent framework. Third, a Legalist-centered turn that emphasizes the logic of “fa” (law), “shu” (administrative technique) and “shi” (positional power). The paper argues that this evolution reflects shifting Confucian-Legalist relations and enables an indigenous construction of Chinese political philosophy grounded in the Hanfeizi’s internal logic.

Labour aesthetics in print: worker subjectivity and the Wuhan Metallurgical Group (1950s-Post-Industrial Era) Li, Lijing

Abstract in English:

Abstract: The amateur printmaking group of workers from China First Metallurgical Construction Corporation stood out uniquely in the national worker literary and artistic movement of the 1950s. This paper attempts to start from the birth of this amateur printmaking group, exploring how, against the backdrop of New China’s industrial construction, the subject construction of the worker-peasant-soldier class and labor aesthetics strengthened the value of labor. Worker printmaking is not only a tool for propaganda, but also a practice of labor aesthetics. It strengthens the subjectivity of labor and constructs a unique aesthetic paradigm of socialist realism. This paper combines Marxist aesthetics and the theory of socialist realism to analyze how labor becomes the core theme of artistic expression. Through the specific case analysis of the worker printmaking in Wuhan, and in combination with the research on visual features, narrative patterns, and symbol systems, it reveals how labor aesthetics is specifically presented in the medium of printmaking.

Dimensions of Identity and Pathways for Engagement in the Preservation of Local Cultural Heritage among Young Chinese People: A Grounded Theory Study Wang, Rui Zheng, Xu Hou, Zhaoming

Abstract in English:

Abstract: Under the context of cultural globalization, this study explores how youth reconstruct the value of local culture amidst negotiating its subjective identity and cultural belonging. It contends that young people’s engagement in cultural heritage conservation is not merely an external response, but a constructive practice of cultural agency, rooted in the awakening of value identification and an existential sense of belonging. Through semi-structured interviews with 30 young Chinese people and utilizing the three-tiered coding process of Grounded Theory, a localized theory model is derived. The study indicates that youth engagement follows a dynamic and nonlinear path of “perception-identity-action”, with cultural confidence serving as the pivotal hub driving a virtuous cycle. This work posits that cultural heritage can serve as the foundational basis for contemporary ethical practices and identity construction. Further, it stresses the imperative of a collaborative governance involving diverse stakeholders and institutional guarantees to propel the youth as an organic force in the cultural rejuvenation process.

Sacred animation: ecological embodiment of natural spirits in digital stories Zhang, Xinghua

Abstract in English:

Abstract: his paper posits that Ecological Embodiment in contemporary East Asian Digital Animation should be conceptualized as a form of Sacred Practice rooted in Eastern ontology, rather than being simplistically reduced to the aesthetic manifestation of Animated Animism. Specifically, the Ecological Embodiment discussed herein transcends the superficial aesthetics of anthropomorphism or symbolization of natural elements. It is deeply embedded in Eastern ontological concepts, such as qi (氣), interbeing and kami (神), forming a creative and practical paradigm with inherent ethical imperatives. Within this framework, animators assume the role of Ritual intermediaries, where the narrative structures and sensory fields they construct, through audiovisual language, essentially constitute the fulfillment of an eco-spiritual responsibility to reestablish a sacred covenant with the natural world. Thus, by developing the Sacred Practice framework, this study aims to deepen the understanding of East Asian animation aesthetics contributing new ethical resources and theoretical pathways to the discourse on ecological spirituality in the digital age.

The representation of korean ethnic regional landscapes through sound in Zhang Lü’s cinema and its aesthetic value Xing, Siyu Li, Chao

Abstract in English:

Abstract: In most of his works, Chinese Korean ethnic film director Zhang Lü explores the Korean immigrants’ identity and cultural aesthetics in East Asia. This study focuses on the unique philosophical temperament revealed through the use of sound in his films, which exhibits qualities of “simplicity”, “restraint” and the essence of “the faintest sound” (Xisheng). By selecting the sound in Zhang Lü’s Korean ethnic films as the research object, this study employs hermeneutic and phenomenological perspectives, integrated with traditional Chinese Daoist thought, to philosophically reflect on and analyze film sound, thereby uncovering the aesthetic implications of the philosophical concept of “the ordinary mind is the Way” and the surreal affect of “the interplay between the real and the unreal” in his sonic landscapes.

Human Becoming and the Triune Synthesis of Truth, Goodness and Beauty in Labor Pedagogies Zhang, Jing Zheng, Manman

Abstract in English:

Abstract: Grounding itself in the philosophical proposition of “human becoming”, this study explores how labor pedagogies, through the trinity of truth, goodness and beauty, promotes the holistic formation of individuals’ intellectual, moral and aesthetic capacities. Based on the Marxist anthropological perspective as its theoretical foundation, it employs methods of philosophical reasoning and analytical-logical approaches to conduct the study. It constructs a theoretical model centered on the practice of the laboring subject, wherein individuals achieve the synergistic development of cognitive rationality (truth), ethical identification (goodness) and aesthetic creation (beauty) through labor praxis. The return to the values of truth, goodness and beauty in labor pedagogies fundamentally sublates educational alienation, empowering individuals to break free from the shackles of instrumental rationality, attain cognitive liberation, ethical reconstruction, and the life’s flourishing, ultimately advancing free and comprehensive human development. It achieves a triple breakthrough at the philosophical level: innovating labor pedagogies theoretical paradigms, deepening the critique of alienation and constructing Chinese discourse, offering a contemporary educational praxis elucidation of Marx’s concept of “the objectification of human essential powers”.

Transformations of Chinese Photography through the Lens of the Conceptions of Nature Hu, Yiding

Abstract in English:

Abstract: The conceptual interaction between the Chinese photographic practice and the use of nature is investigated in this study. On the one hand, photographers apply heavily to the spiritual and aesthetic laws of the old natural philosophy, on the other, they hold fast to the essence of photography as a medium. This two-fold impact has conditioned a unique creative practice that compromises the tradition and a conscious reflection of the medium peculiarities. Since the intentional revision and redefinition of the tradition of literati landscape, through the politically charged images of revolution landscapes, to the more modern turn to ecological criticism, the visual image of nature has always been inseparable from the historical and cultural background of that time. Through the visual analysis and the contextualization of the historical background, this paper will trace the development in the depiction of nature in Chinese photography in order to bridge the divide between the surface of image and deeper cultural structures. Through this, it aligns photographic studies as one of the critical lenses through which the experiences of multifaceted modernity could be explained in China.

From Shiguang to Xingguang: Ontology and the Method of Huiguang in the Taiyi Jinhua Zongzhi Zhang, Danke

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This article advances an ontological interpretation of light in the Taiyi Jinhua Zongzhi 太乙金華宗旨, arguing that its discourse on luminosity articulates a coherent Daoist metaphysical framework rather than a psychological or purely symbolic model of inner experience. It demonstrates that the text distinguishes xingguang 性光 (innate light), as the ontological Dao, from shiguang 識光 (cognitive light), which obscures this primordial luminosity, and prescribes huiguang 回光 (turning the light inward) as the disciplined path of return. Against prevailing symbolic and psychological readings, this distinction is shown to function as an internally articulated ontological structure rather than a metaphorical taxonomy of experience. Through close textual analysis, the article elucidates a triadic framework of light as ontology, method and visionary confirmation. It concludes that the Taiyi Jinhua Zongzhi presents a distinctively Daoist model of light-centered cultivation, contributing to Daoist metaphysics and to broader debates on non-dual ontology and contemplative practice.

The historical formation and contemporary value of the Ma Xian belief and custom culture Zheng, Haiyou

Abstract in English:

Abstract: The Ma Xian belief and custom originated in the southern Zhejiang region during the Tang dynasty. After undergoing multiple transformations and adaptations, it has achieved a cumulative historical evolution in aspects, such as role positioning, divine characterization, ritual practice and religious doctrine, and has been listed as China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Rooted in the Oriental philosophical traditions of Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism, this paper reveals the living practice of Ma Xian belief and custom on the moral and religious-philosophical levels. By clarifying the philosophical question concerning how folk belief forms an ethical system, this paper further shows that, through the doctrinal formalization of Daoism, the integration of Buddhist compassion, the permeation of Confucian moral ethics and the influence of local folk culture, Ma Xian belief and custom constitute a community based religious practice rather than a systematic religious doctrine, responding to local cultural needs and embodying the cultural spirit of the fusion of “Dao” and “De” in oriental philosophy. The Ma Xian belief embodies the fusion of historical continuity and modern transformation, demonstrating more explicitly how its ethical concepts are manifested in contemporary social behavior and local governance, reflecting the enduring relevance of eastern ethical philosophy to regional morality, social governance and cultural inheritance.

A Historical Review and Future Outlook of the Construction of Leisure Culture in China Li, Pengcheng Mei, Yanling

Abstract in English:

Abstract: Starting from the theory of comprehensive human development by Marx and dialectical synthesis with the quintessence of traditional Chinese philosophy, that is, the yinyang doctrine and the Doctrine of the Mean, this essay tries to carefully interpret the kind of complementary relationship that Laozi views between work and rest. Based on this, people can gain balance and keep moderation in everything they do. The Dao follows nature, and the sky follows Dao. This phrase will give us some insights about the philosophy behind leisure culture. As culture is defined as the activity and outcome of humanizing nature, the intrinsic content of constructing leisure culture can be made clearer. Adopting a complex view of the combination of Marxism and Eastern wisdom, this research, together with an analysis of the development of the labor-leisure relationship in Chinese society, tries to build up an adequate theoretical framework of leisure culture, so that people can develop in both the material realm and the spiritual one and, fully, realize the holistic human development in a Marxian sense.

From Spectacle to Dwelling: Ontological reconstruction of immersive cultural-tourism commercial spaces based on Daoist theory of “Body-environment unity” Yang, Qi Yu, Yiwen Huang, Yaoyao

Abstract in English:

Abstract: In response to the dual predicament of “technological carnival” and “superficial experience” currently faced by immersive cultural-tourism spaces, this study proposes the following countermeasures and suggestions: it takes “Body-Environment Unity” as an important ontological viewpoint and centers on it to conduct a deep reconstruction. By constructing a four-dimensional analytical model of “embodiment-environmentality-interpenetrability-creativity”, this serves both as a supplement to the neglect of embodiment in Western spatial critique theory and as a translation of this concept into practical application. This study consistently insists on theoretical reflection on “Body-Environment Unity”, remaining vigilant against its risks of romanticization or assimilation by capital. Finally, this study argues that spatial design should be an “existential dwelling” that transcends technological spectacle-a deep fusion between humanity and nature.

Practices of Heaven-human Ethics in Transportation of Late Qing: An Analysis from the Perspective of Practical Philosophy Li, Yifei

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This article argues that transportation practices in late Qing China embody a form of normative practical rationality grounded in Heaven-human ethical order, rather than a residual or premodern mode of thought. Against Western instrumental rationality as an evaluative framework, this study adopts a practical philosophical approach grounded in praxis and phronesis to reassess how everyday mobility was ethically constituted. Rather than treating transportation as a technical object of efficiency, it identifies the normative premises through which ethical legitimacy was historically constituted. Manifested in late Qing transport practices, the ethics of Heaven-human unity is shown as a form of practical rationality embedded in social order and moral judgment rather than metaphysical abstraction. From this standpoint, Western efficiency-based rationality lacks normative legitimacy as a universal evaluative standard. Through analysis of Western critiques of roads, mobility and infrastructure, this article establishes a philosophical adjudication among rationalities, affirming Heaven-human ethics as a complete and autonomous form of practical rationality rather than a culturally bounded belief system.

The exile consciousness and subject struggle in Li Sao Hua, Qikun

Abstract in English:

Abstract: Qu Yuan’s Li Sao is commonly interpreted as an expression of political grievance, emotional lament, or symbolic aestheticization of suffering. This paper challenges these approaches and argues that Li Sao articulates a philosophical model in which exile functions as the necessary condition for the formation of ethical subjectivity. Rather than treating exile as a biographical consequence of failed politics, the paper contends that exile in Li Sao structures moral testing, self-judgment and ethical reorientation. Drawing on distinct yet complementary resources from Confucianism, Daoism and the I Ching, the paper shows how spatial, cultural and spiritual displacement generate ethical agency and self-cultivation. The symbolic images of fragrant herbs, the fair lady, and the long road are interpreted as inferential sites in which exile compels decision, evaluation and transformation. The paper concludes that Li Sao advances a defensible philosophical proposition: ethical subjectivity in early Chinese thought emerges through a triadic process of struggle, transformation and ethical generation. This view provides a citable perspective on the genesis of moral agency in Chinese philosophy and clarifies why exile is not merely literary theme, but a normative structure of ethical life.

The intersection of politics and ethics: a philosophical path to building happiness Liu, Zijun

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This paper delves into the age old philosophical debate between virtue and law within Chinese political philosophy and the development of the theory of Dynamic Political Ethics, a three countenance framework that incorporates moral legitimacy (Confucian Ren), institutional legitimacy (Legalist Fa), a three return tenon, which lies under the foundational learning of the Chinese classical philosophy of Confucianism (Ren as moral legitimacy), Legalism (Fa as institutional legitimacy) and Taoism (Dao as natural harmony). This paper, in fact, discusses the moot question: can political happiness be obtained by moral virtue, by institutional law, or by their dynamic equilibrium? The aim of this paper is to claim that neither the prevalence of one principle, nor that of the other, is a sufficient condition of political well-being, but rather the application of the two to each other in a dialectics, namely, in such a way that the loss of either leads to the recovery of the other: when the morality is loseness, law restores order; when law is rigidity, virtue restores humanity; when they both are lost, Dao restores harmony. This paper demonstrates how these traditions oppose, complement and integrate through a problem-based and dialogical methodology to create an ethical paradigm applicable to contemporary governance. In addition to its historical background, this framework presents theory, practical recommendations for the people’s governance, the rule of law and ecological civilization, and it presents a philosophical way to attain just, moral and sustainable political happiness.

Non-Duality of Principle and Phenomena and Integration of Doctrinal Teaching and Chan Practice: Formal Continuity of Chinese Buddhist Ontology and Linguistic Conception in Chinese Buddhist Animation in Fujian and Taiwan Chen, Shuchao Yu, Wenyao Chen, Mengyi

Abstract in English:

Abstract: Due to the contemporary trend of “Humanistic Buddhism” in China, the spread of the Buddhist culture has exhibited peculiar propensities of modernization and secularization. Since the 1990s, Fujian and Taiwanese Buddhist animations have had a broad impact on Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and other Chinese diaspora communities. In the present context, the ideals of “Non-Duality of Principle and Phenomena” and “Integration of Doctrinal Teaching and Chan Practice”, in Chinese Buddhist tradition, are vividly reflected in these effects. It has a transitional spectrum from “the sacred” to “the secular”: not only is it subjected to traditional iconography and pattern plots, but also formal adjustments to the specifics of audiovisual media. It means the different traditions of audiovisual media have variations, especially those which prepare animation. Moreover, in the protracted mediation of, on the one hand, “Principal” as compared to “Phenomena”, on the other hand, “speech” as compared to “Chan”, there have gradually arisen three principal forms of Buddhist animations, including Scriptural Animation, Doctrinal Animation and Buddha-nature Animation.

Dao and film time: harmony and circulation flow in Chinese philosophical narration Liu, Xu

Abstract in English:

Abstract: Addressing the limitations of Western linear narrative frameworks in interpreting Chinese-language films, this paper proposes a cinematic temporal ontology based on Daoist philosophy. This ontology transforms “generative”, “cyclical” and “harmonious” aspects into “relational generation” (constructing temporal dynamics through non-causal interactions), “rhythmic breathing” (creating non-uniform temporal pulsations through sound and image rhythms) and “field interaction” (achieving coexistence of characters and space through depth-of-field manipulation and ambient sound). Through a close examination of the decreasing shot lengths and synchronized shifts in color and soundscape in In the Mood for Love, and the breathing structure created by long takes and empty shots in The Assassin, this paper demonstrates how the Daoist concept of time, as an operational narrative force, achieves its non-linear self-manifestation in film, providing a new path for global film theory to shift from formal description to ontological reconstruction.

The generative mechanisms of early Chinese cosmology and supernatural narratives: the Classic of Mountains and Seas and “the zhiguai tradition” Lan, Beibei

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This article examines the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhai jing) and the zhiguai tradition as products of a shared mode of understanding that preceded the emergence of abstract philosophical systems. Rather than approaching these materials primarily as mythological or literary texts, it suggests that they embody stable ways of rendering the world intelligible in early China. The study proposes that this mode of understanding operates through practices of spatial placement, differentiation and relational linkage. In the Classic of Mountains and Seas, these practices shape cosmological order. In zhiguai narratives, they are redirected toward the interpretation of human experience. By tracing how space, anomaly, and correlation function across both corpora, the article argues that supernatural narrative served as a means of organizing experience rather than as mere imaginative expression. From this perspective, generative cognition offers a way to account for how philosophical reasoning could take form prior to systematic conceptualization.

From the poetic and philosophical dimensions of Blossoms Shanghai to the reconfiguration of Shanghai’s modernity narratives Li, Chunyang Shen, Ningtao

Abstract in English:

Abstract: Jin Yucheng’s novel Blossoms Shanghai presents a distinctive narrative practice that offers a poetic-philosophical framework deeply rooted in the pre-Qin concept of “Qiwu” (Equality of Things), thereby reconfiguring the discourse on Shanghai’s modernity. Through the deliberate deterritorialization of dialect and the superimposition of dual temporalities, the novel effectively dismantles the linear progression myth of modernity. The pervasive motifs of silence-expressed as “buxiang”-and the emblematic “lotus root” collectively evoke an urban cosmos, marked by ontological unity and the interplay of illusion and reality. This study contends that Blossoms Shanghai resists nostalgic historicism; instead, upholding the Zhuangzi’s ideal of “Xiaoyao” (free wandering) and the “Bianyi” (constant transformation) of the I Ching, it transfigures quotidian civic life into a generative philosophical “event”. In doing so, it transcends the established narrative traditions, epitomized by Eileen Chang and Wang Anyi’s Shanghai literature. This “Qiwu”-inspired reconstruction of modernity not only expands the aesthetic horizons of urban writing, but also vividly exemplifies the potent intersection of classical Chinese philosophy with contemporary cultural critique.

A Study on the Dissemination and Influence of Zhang Shi’s Scholarship in Japan’s Edo Period Hu, Jie Feng, Heyi

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This paper argues that the process of the spread of Zhang Shi’s thought to Japan, by the Zhang Nanxuan’s works, reveals a fundamental philosophical mechanism in cross-cultural communication. We do not describe a single case, but also advocate that the acceptance of the concepts of “Jujing qiongli” (abiding in reverence and exhaustive investigation of principles), “Rectifying the Sovereign’s Mind”, “ren” (benevolence) and “zhongyi” (loyalty and righteousness) by Japanese scholars (e.g., Hayashi Razan, Kaibara Ekiken, Yoshida Shōin), in the Edo era, is by no means a simple transplantation. On the contrary, we believe that this clearly shows a universal process: driven by local thoughts and social and political context, foreign thoughts must undergo selective absorption, localization transformation and creative reconstruction. This paper clearly points out that Japan’s reinterpretation of Zhang Shi’s thought provides us with a key model to understand how Chinese philosophy must experience transformative adaptation rather than simple repetition in the global dialogue. This cognition has important implications for its contemporary transnational communication trajectory.

The Operation of Confucian Ideological Discourse and the Vilification of Songshi in Qing Dynasty Literature Zhong, Jingxian Fu, Yang

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This paper questions the shallow assumption about the songshi’s (litigators) derogation-based representation in writings of the Qing dynasty as a mere reflection of historical facts. It argues that available literature, which is likely to trace this phenomenon shallowly to the ruling elite’s demands or rejection by the institution, does not go deep enough to unearth the philosophical logic behind it. This paper claims that the songshi’s systematic characterization, as contentious, extortionate and morally perverse figures in literary works, in essence, embodies a discursive deflection tactic, which the Confucian doctrine used to face governance challenges in reality through narrative means. Drawing upon the schemata of ideological discourse mechanisms, the paper examines songshi’s thirty-two individual accounts within twelve literary works spanning the Yongzheng to the Guangxu reigns, analyzing how the interaction of static components and dynamic processes has jointly been used to achieve the songshi’s moral ostracism, and, consequently, helped Confucianism address its goals of redirecting social contradictions, establishing moral authority and strengthening social control.

The philosophical logic behind the compilation of local anthologies in Jinhua during the Ming dynasty Gu, Lingling

Abstract in English:

Abstract: The local anthologies, compiled in Jinhua, during the Ming dynasty were not only collections of literary works, but also institutional instruments for legitimizing Confucian orthodoxy. This article argues that these local anthologies were a concrete manifestation of Confucian orthodoxy in local society. They represented not just a collection of texts, but a carefully designed philosophical and institutional practice aimed at establishing Confucian orthodoxy. Confucius’ and Mencius’ thought symbolizes the core of Confucian culture, and Jinhua’s local anthologies embody the textual institutionalization of Confucian orthodoxy. These anthologies are not simple literary collections, but institutional mechanisms that establish Confucian orthodoxy as legitimate at the local level. The compilation of anthologies in Ming Jinhua was a continuous process that constantly defined the boundaries of orthodoxy and reflected the contradiction among political ethics, orthodox authority and the transfer of values. It should be noted that the existence of these anthologies in Ming Jinhua shows that “writings are to convey the Way” is the philosophical basis of Confucian orthodoxy. Rejecting this conclusion is tantamount to denying that Confucian orthodoxy can take root in local society.

Research on Ancient Chinese “Voice-Centered” Philosophy of Music Lu, Yong

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This paper argues that a voce-centered musical philosophy emerged in ancient China, according to which the human voice occupies a normative position vis-à-vis instruments because it is the medium that most directly externalizes life and Qi. It argues that Qi constitutes the theoretical foundation that links vocal sound to both natural vitality and moral and spiritual agency. Based on an analysis of sources ranging from the pre-Qin period to the Qing dynasty, the study shows a shift from material hierarchies (“silk-bamboo-flesh”) to criteria based on degrees of vital participation in sound, culminating in a vocal aesthetic oriented towards the human subject. It also explains how the linguistic characteristics of Chinese and the link between literature and music consolidated the voice as the norm for timbre, form and musical pedagogy. Finally, it analyses the shift from attention to acoustic effects to the morphology of the oral cavity, which made it possible to articulate a systematic theory anchored in the practice of the primacy of the voice.

How silence becomes harmony: an analysis of the aesthetic of empty spaces in piano music Wang, Zhuoxin Fu, Zilei

Abstract in English:

Abstract: This paper contends that silence in piano music is not just an acoustic nothingness, but an active aesthetic power, which, in turn, actively creates musical meaning. It responds to the question of why silence works as a structural, expressive and perceptual medium, by analysing the concept of empty space in piano music through the context of Chinese philosophical aesthetics. Based on the Daoist notions of you-wu (有無相生) and da yin xi sheng (大音希声), along with the aesthetic principles of liu bai (留白), jing(静) and qi yu (气韵), the paper will create an integrated philosophical system, in which you emptiness functions as an active medium instead of passive nothingness. The paper utilizes two chosen pieces of piano work and the performance practices through close philosophical-interpretive examination to show the ways in which pauses, resonance decay and registral openness can create structural clarity, expressive tension and increased perceptual awareness. This paper expands upon existing philosophical discussions of musical silence, extending beyond Western theoretical paradigms by treating silence as an analytically functional and conceptually productive constituent, which offers a non-Western conceptual approach to explaining musical silence.
