The empathy paradox in borderline patients: Archaic dynamics, emotional turbulence, and interpersonal interactions

Abstract

This study investigates the paradox of empathy in patients with borderline personality disorder. Its central hypothesis states that the reactive hypersensitivity of these patients to the unconscious of others reflects a specific modality of empathy. This research aims to explore the implications of this peculiar empathy, its relation with archaic dynamics, and its impact on interpersonal relationships. Its method consists of a narrative literature review and an analysis of illustrative clinical cases. The results indicate that this sensitivity seeks to stabilize internalized object relations, but combined with the distrust of conscious behavior, compromises interpersonal bonds and contributes to social dysfunction.
