Open-access Phonological awareness in dyslexics

Purpose:  to analyze the phonological awareness on a dyslexics’ group, provided its importance in the reading and writing acquisition process and knowing that such domain configures great difficulty for the children with the disorder at issue.

Methods:  phonological awareness test was applied in 15 children with dyslexia, from 8 to 12 years old.

Results:  the performance in syllabic tasks was clearly above the performance in phonemic tasks; nevertheless, a reduction in syllabic tasks was also noted with relation to the expectation for that age.

Conclusion:  the syllabic awareness is acquired before the phonological awareness in dyslexics, as well as the children without the said disturbance. Nevertheless, the results of syllabic tasks are also lowered. The more children depend on phonological awareness for carrying out the task, the worst their performance becomes.
