Abstract in English: ABSTRACT: With the current policy of internationalization of federal universities in Brazil, with the design of an appraisal system, and with the rapid trend towards digitization, there have been far-reaching changes in the day-to-day organization of academic life and in the communicative practices of academics. Before the internationalization policy, the main language of research was Portuguese, but now there is a growing shift to English in some fields. This article focuses on the impact of these changes on the language and literacy practices of academic staff, and on the stances and strategies they have adopted vis-à-vis the changes. It draws on interviews conducted with academics during a critical ethnographic research project carried out in two federal universities in 2019. The focus was on their academic trajectories over time, their techno-linguistic biographies and their views on the changes. I present detailed insights from research conducted with three academics at one of the federal universities. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT A larger qualitative study, which we draw upon here, investigated the perceptions of academics and students, in two state funded universities, regarding internationalization and the use of English as a medium of instruction (EMI). In this article, we focus on their concerns about EMI policy, drawing on interviews and focus groups. The range of concerns that were identified during this study were: the negative impact on content learning, language hierarchization, the emotional impact (confidence in using English), low student enrollment, exclusion, (re) production of inequality, impact on identity and collegiality. Taking account of these findings, we argue that it is important for language policymakers in both institutions to consider the concerns of academics and students as part of their planning process, and to address them responsibly. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT In this article I analyse narratives about Portuguese as an Additional Language (PAL) learning spaces within a Brazilian university in order to show how ways of knowing, or epistemic differences, can be tied to the production of linguistic differences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with two PAL educators and one Japanese student. To conduct the analysis, I focus on the ways in which participants ‘scale the world’. This line of analysis demonstrated that participants construct hierarchies between learners and between knowledges based on ideas of West and East. In concluding, I argue that university administration and staff need to engage in urgent epistemological dialogue and praxis concerning language policy and practice in language learning spaces, in order to diminish the possibility of reproducing hegemonic knowledges. |

Thematic Dossier Internationalization of higher education in Brazil: Institutional strategies and different discourses about language among academics at one federal university Martin-Jones, Marilyn Souza, Ana Carvalho, Gilcinei Abstract in Portuguese: RESUMO Este artigo apresenta um estudo conduzido em uma universidade federal do Brasil. Abstract in English: ABSTRACT This article presents research which was carried out in one federal university in Brazil. The focus was on: (1) the ways in which institutional strategies and policy initiatives of different types, relating to research and to teaching, were being developed in the wake of internationalization and national policy shifts; (2) the views of different academics regarding these ongoing policy processes, and the wider discourses about language and about knowledge-building underpinning their views. The research was carried out as part of a wider study, based in two universities. The wider study was entitled: The changing language and literacy landscapes of Brazilian universities. This article builds on recent lines of theory-building in the ethnography of language policy. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT: In this paper, I analyse bilingual interactional practices in higher education in Brazil, focusing on Deaf students and, in particular, on their participation in academic literacy practices with the assistance of Sign Language interpreters. The paper draws on a study conducted within the undergraduate Linguistics program at a public university. As part of this study, I engaged in participant observation and interactional analysis in a classroom where three Deaf students were enrolled. The study was conducted within a theoretical and methodological framework consisting of ethnography as a logic of inquiry, recent writings on bilingual education for Deaf students, and literacy as a social practice (New Literacy Studies). My analysis of the specific challenges faced by these students in higher education is also situated within the wider educational policy context in Brazil and related to recent policy-making regarding democratising access to higher education for minoritized groups. |

Thematic Dossier “Whoa, But I’m Not Like This, I Don’t Even Know How This Happens”: Literacy Practices and Experiences of Students From Migrant Backgrounds in a Brazilian Public University Mattos, Elisa Diniz, Leandro Rodrigues Alves Abstract in Portuguese: RESUMO: Este artigo discute práticas de letramento e experiências de quatro estudantes migrantes de crise que ingressaram em uma universidade pública federal no Brasil por meio de um edital específico para esse público. Abstract in English: ABSTRACT: This article discusses the literacy practices and experiences of four students from migrant backgrounds who entered a federal public university in Brazil through a public call specifically designed for this group. In the field of Critical Applied Linguistics, we take a decolonial stance on internationalization and academic literacies. Research data were generated using tools such as questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and WhatsApp. The analysis focused on three main aspects: (i) ‘mismatches’ between the participants’ expectations and the curricular structure of their undergraduate courses; (ii) the opacity of certain aspects of academic literacy and curricular organization; (iii) issues related to identity in interaction with peers. The research findings point to the ways in which language education policies can be developed with a view to promoting inclusion in higher education for students from migrant backgrounds. |

Thematic Dossier Shifting Away from Normative/Hegemonic Language Assessment in Graduate Programs in Brazil and Espousing a Social Justice Agenda: Insights from Assessment Practices with Indigenous and Deaf Students in Two Universities Carvalho, Simone da Costa Schlatter, Margarete Abstract in Portuguese: RESUMO: Este artigo analisa as ideologias de linguagem que subjazem à avaliação da proficiência em língua estrangeira de estudantes indígenas e surdos em duas universidades federais no Brasil. Abstract in English: ABSTRACT: This article analyzes the language ideologies that underpin the assessment of the foreign language proficiency of Indigenous and Deaf graduate students in two federal universities in Brazil. It draws on recent theory-building about language ideologies, academic literacies, language testing and communicative repertoires. The data analyzed include institutional guidelines and reading proficiency tests administered in the past five years at both universities. We show that, while official documents are grounded in a one-nation-one-language ideology, the design and implementation of the tests reflect efforts to value the students’ communicative repertoires and aim for more democratic forms of assessment. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT: The objective of this article is to present a research project and analyze how students, who are studying to become teachers of Portuguese as a Second Language/Additional Language (PSL/PAL) in a degree program at a public university in Brazil, narrate aspects of internationalization at the university, as well as the contribution of their degree program to this process. To achieve our objective, we analysed testimonials about internationalization written by students from the first year of the Teacher Education Degree Program in PSL/PAL, and transcripts of audio-recordings of semi-structured interviews carried out in 2023 with alumni. In both the narratives of students beginning their education and training, and in the alumni narratives, few aspects of internationalization were reported as being visible on campus. Mention was only made of student mobility and the presence of international students. However, the alumni narratives included visions of an expanded linguistic education – for pluralism and social justice – which had been shaped during their educational experience in the program. This signaled the potential of degree programs such as this one as means of developing a counter-hegemonic agenda for the internationalization of higher education. |
