Open-access The Development of Linguistic-Discursive Capacities of Haitian Immigrants for Writing the Enem Essay

This article examines the development of linguistic-discursive capacities, regarding the use of connectors (e.g., however, according to, besides), of Haitian immigrants preparing to write the Enem essay. The corpus analyzed consists of texts produced by three students and transcriptions of audio-recorded classes. The study is based on the theory of Sociodiscursive Interactionism, the concept of language capacities, and elements of Text Linguistics. The results show that, during the pedagogical intervention through a didactic sequence, students developed their linguistic-discursive capacities, using a greater number and a wider variety of connectors with each new text production. These results have significant implications for the teaching of writing in the analyzed context and in similar contexts of Portuguese as a Welcoming Language.
