ORIGINAL ARTICLE Thermal and rheological characterization of hidrophobically styrene-modified polyacrylamide Dutra, Caroline Pereira Peres, Augusto Cesar de Carvalho Petzhold, Cesar Liberato Silveira, Nadya Pesce da Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Hydrophobically modified polyacrylamides (HMPAMs) are synthesized by incorporating styrene, a hydrophobic monomer, to address the limitations of conventional polyacrylamide (PAM) and partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM). These limitations, which reduce the effectiveness of polymer flooding for enhanced oil recovery, include poor shear resistance, sensitivity to salinity, chemical degradation such as polymer chain scission, and hydrolysis of acrylamide groups. In this study, the HMPAM samples are characterized using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and oscillatory strain measurements. The results indicate that HMPAM containing a higher concentration of hydrophobic monomer (1.5 mol%) demonstrates improved shear resistance and greater thermal stability. |

ORIGINAL ARTICLE Influence of carbon black trimodal mixture on LDPE films properties: Part3 – Fillers Barbosa, Juliano Martins Ribeiro, Hélio Pessan, Luiz Antonio Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Previous studies in this journal reported a two-part investigation on carbon black (CB) dispersions in LDPE films. In PART01, trimodal CB mixtures were evaluated using a Design of Experiments (DOE) to assess colorimetric and rheological properties, containing small (S) and medium (M) particles showed higher Tinting Strength (TS) with lower viscosity due to synergistic interactions. In PART02, dispersion of blend F18 was optimized during twin-screw extrusion by evaluating the Specific Mechanical Energy (SME), and the best performance was obtained at 600 rpm and 10 kg/h (0.29 kWh/kg), defined as F18-P03. In PART03, this formulation was filled with micro- (D50: 2.5 μm) or nano-CaCO3 (D50: 40 nm) at 10 and 20 wt% to reduce cost and modify mechanical properties. Although CaCO3 reduced TS, increased Filter Pressure Value (FPV) and viscosity. Nanoparticle at 10 wt% showed the best balance: Young’s modulus increased 18%, while tensile strength and deformation decreased about 8%. |

ORIGINAL ARTICLE Chitosan-collagen scaffolds with Jatropha mollissima extract for wound healing Elias, Ana Luiza de Sá Barbosa, Rossemberg Cardoso Rodrigues, José Filipe Bacalhau Barreto, Lívia Pereira Ferreira, David Jhonata Almeida Sousa, Wladymyr Jefferson Bacalhau de Tavares, Albaniza Alves Silva, Suédina Maria de Lima Lia Fook, Marcus Vinicius Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Chronic wounds remain a major clinical challenge due to prolonged inflammation, infection, and delayed tissue regeneration. This study developed and characterized porous scaffolds based on chitosan, collagen, and ethanolic extract of Jatropha mollissima aimed at wound dressing applications. Scaffolds were prepared by lyophilization using different chitosan/collagen ratios, with and without plant extract incorporation. Physicochemical, morphological, and biological properties were evaluated by FTIR, optical microscopy, SEM, swelling, enzymatic biodegradation, and in vitro cytotoxicity assays. The results demonstrated good interaction between chitosan and collagen, the presence of porous and interconnected structures, swelling indices above 740%, controlled biodegradation, and absence of cytotoxic effects. The incorporation of Jatropha mollissima extract did not compromise scaffold stability or absorbency. These findings suggest that the developed scaffolds possess characteristics of interest for wound dressing applications. However, additional studies involving quantitative porosity measurements, wettability, and mechanical characterization are required to further validate their potential for difficult-to-heal wound treatment. |

ORIGINAL ARTICLE Hybrid membranes made from industrial waste for the separation of oil emulsions Souza, José Everton Soares de Ferreira, Damares Oliveira de Jesus Lima, Carlos Antônio Pereira de Medeiros, Vanessa da Nóbrega Araújo, Edcleide Maria Medeiros, Keila Machado de Resumo em Inglês: Abstract The development of sustainable membranes from polymer waste is a promising strategy for wastewater treatment. This study investigated the effect of zinc oxide (ZnO) incorporation on recycled polyamide 66 (PA66) membranes prepared by the phase inversion method for oily emulsion separation. Membranes were characterized by atomic force microscopy, porosity, water absorption, pore size, contact angle, and permeation tests. ZnO promoted structural modifications, increasing roughness (140.87 nm), water absorption (76.6%), porosity (60.5%), and mean pore radius (1.85 µm) compared with pure PA66. The membrane containing 3 wt.% ZnO exhibited the highest stabilized water permeate flux (159.82 L.m-2.h-1). All membranes achieved color and turbidity removals of up to 99.88% and oil rejection above 95%, producing permeates that complied with current discharge regulations. These results demonstrate that recycled PA66/ZnO hybrid membranes are promising, sustainable candidates for efficient oily wastewater treatment. |

ORIGINAL ARTICLE Recycled polylactic acid nanofibers and silver nanoparticles obtained by vertical electrospinning Analuiza Maiza, Oscar Iván Lascano Moreta, Alejandra Marlene Paredes Robalino, María Belén Sevilla Abarca, Martha Esperanza Guamanquispe Toasa, Jorge Patricio Resumo em Inglês: Abstract The increasing accumulation of polylactic acid (PLA) waste from 3D printing highlights the need for circular economy approaches and the development of high-value functional materials. Recycled PLA was washed, shredded, and dissolved in chloroform to prepare solutions with concentrations between 5.0% and 20.0% (w/v). Silver nanoparticles were incorporated at 0.5 wt% relative to polymer mass. Membranes were fabricated via vertical electrospinning using applied voltages of 6–14 kV, tip-to-collector distances of 9.5–15.5 cm, and a flow rate of 0.1983 µL/min. The materials were characterized using rheology, FTIR, SEM, and antimicrobial assays. Fiber diameters (1.20–1.27 µm) confirmed a microfibrous structure. Viscosity increased from 0.01 to 0.21 Pa·s with PLA concentration, affecting jet stability. Antimicrobial activity showed inhibition zones of 10.12–13.51 mm against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The results confirm a clear structure–property–function relationship, supporting applications in antimicrobial coatings and active packaging systems. |

ORIGINAL ARTICLE Comparative compressive behavior of FDM-printed PLA lattice scaffolds: FCC, RF, OT Ertek, Cem Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Porous PLA-based bone scaffolds with tailored lattice architectures are increasingly investigated for biomedical applications due to their potential to mimic the mechanical behavior of trabecular bone. The novelty of this study lies in systematically comparing FCC, RF, and OT lattice geometries using PLA, identical FDM process parameters, unit-cell dimensions and strut diameter, and compression test conditions. Scaffolds were fabricated via Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and evaluated through finite element simulations and compression tests. Pore densities were 55.72% (FCC), 72.62% (RF), and 85.68% (OT), within the reported range of human trabecular bone. Experimental compressive modulus values were 192.186 MPa (FCC), 97.418 MPa (RF), and 62.162 MPa (OT), demonstrating strong topology-dependent mechanical behavior. These findings provide preliminary mechanical evidence and design insights regarding scaffold performance. However, the results should be interpreted within the scope of mechanical evaluation only and do not provide direct biological validation or evidence of clinical applicability. |

ORIGINAL ARTICLE Development and characterization of sodium alginate reinforced Acridocarpus orientalis extract Shah, Yasir Abbas Gupta, Aditya Al-Harrasi, Ahmed Rehman, Najeeb Ur Halim, Sobia Ahsan Hayat, Asia Afzaal, Muhammad Ahmad, Mohammad Wasi Bhatia, Saurabh Resumo em Inglês: Abstract In this research, biodegradable sodium alginate films were synthesized by using stem extract of Acridocarpus orientalis to enhance antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity, water vapor transmittance properties, release kinetics and physicochemical functionality. The films were produced by adding 0.2% and 0.4% (w/v) methanolic extract into a 2% (w/v) sodium alginate solution. The fabricated films were comprehensively analyzed for their mechanical, functional, release and physical properties. The films showed increase in tensile strength and elongation at break with the increased concentration of methanolic extract. Antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity, and water vapor transmittance rate was also improved with increased concentration of extract. This improvement was due to the presence of phytochemicals like phenolic and flavonoid compounds in the extract. Altogether, these observations demonstrate the promise of A. orientalis extract as a natural functional additive to produce sodium alginate-based biopolymer films with enhanced functionality in active packaging. |

ORIGINAL ARTICLE Effect of functionalized graphene oxide on epoxy thermal and mechanical properties Jimenez, Gina Colmenares Leyva González, Maria Elena Oliveira, Adhimar Flavio Resumo em Inglês: Abstract This work studies the effect of graphene oxide (GO) and monoethanolamine-functionalized graphene oxide (f-GO) on the thermal and mechanical properties of epoxy resin (ER). GO was synthesized by electrochemical exfoliation and functionalized by Fischer esterification. FTIR confirmed the functionalization and the XRD analysis revealed changes in the interlayer spacing of GO. Epoxy resin containing 0.10 to 0.50 wt% of GO and f-GO was prepared and characterized by FTIR, DSC, TGA, and compression testing. DSC studied the activation energy (Ea) of the curing reaction of ER-GO. Ea increased from 56.3 kJ·mol−1 (resin) to 89.1 kJ·mol−1 at 0.13 wt% GO. However, the glass transition temperature did not show significant variation. TGA of ER-GO and ER/f-GO showed thermal stability compared with ER. The ER-GO and ER/f-GO 0.20 wt% formulations exhibited an increase in compressive modulus compared to neat epoxy. The improved mechanical properties of ER/f-GO are attributed to higher interfacial interaction. |

ORIGINAL ARTICLE Membranes manufactured from reused polyamide fibers for the treatment of textile effluents Rebouças, Larissa Dias Mendes, Joanne Graziela Andrade Lima, Carlos Antônio Pereira de Araújo, Edcleide Maria Marques, Ana Clara Lopes Medeiros, Keila Machado de Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Microfiltration membranes were prepared by phase inversion technique from polyamide 66 (PA66) synthetic fiber waste, with addition of mass titanium dioxide (TiO2) and ammonium chloride as pore-forming agent. The hybrid solutions showed higher viscosity due to the formation of stable suspensions. Morphological analyses showed an increase in porous and density of the membranes due high specific surface area of TiO2. The hybrid membranes exhibited greater water absorption, porosity, pore radius compared to pure PA66, due to the increased hydrophilicity, size and number of pores promoted by TiO2. Membranes presented more than 99% of dye removal efficiency for turbidity and selectivity and removal above 91% for color, met water quality standards. The 3% TiO2 membrane exhibited the highest water flux (269.82 L.m-2.h-1), maintaining high dye rejection efficiency (99.64%), demonstrating a balance between permeability and selectivity. Therefore, it was found that hybrid membranes have potential for the treatment of textile industry effluents. |

SHORT COMMUNICATION Enhancing oil-water separation performance through surface engineering of 3D-printed polypropylene membranes Correia, Paulo Romano Cruz Leal, Débora Abrantes Oliveira, Vinícius Pires de Kerche, Eduardo Fischer Polkowski, Rodrigo Resumo em Inglês: Abstract Superhydrophobic porous membranes are materials that are used for oil-water separation. However, conventional fabrication methods present limited scalability, complex processing, and poor membrane morphology control. In this study, a modular alternative based on 3D printed membrane was investigated. Microporous membranes, composed of polypropylene (PP)/graphene nanocomposites, were fabricated by the fused filament fabrication (FFF) method and subsequently surface-modified via dip-coating, using coatings based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), silica nanoparticles, and/or graphene nanosheets. Untreated pure PP membranes exhibited a water contact angle (WCA) of 117.9°, which increased to 123.3° when graphene was incorporated into the PP matrix. Besides, the surface treatment increased the membranes’ WCA up to 132.59°. Filtration tests demonstrated high oil-water separation efficiency, achieving up to 99%. These results highlight the synergism between additive manufacturing and nanostructured surface treatments. |
