The dawn of the (forte)piano

Abstract

This article reviews the dawn of the fortepiano, an instrument central to music making from the second half of Eighteenth century to the middle of the Twentieth century. It presents documents that describe the beginning of Cristofori’s invention as well as non-Cristofori documents on the same subject.
