Discovering Dirson Costa: Formation, Contributions, and Works

This article presents a study on the trajectory of the conductor Dirson Costa, addressing his musical education, his contributions to music in the state of Amazonas, and his artistic production. The main objective is to analyze Costa’s role in the institutional consolidation of music in Amazonas, as well as to catalogue his principal works, contributing to the preservation and accessibility of his musical legacy. The research adopts a historical-biographical approach, using primary and secondary sources, including manuscripts and documents preserved at the Dirson Costa Institute. The results include a detailed catalogue of 17 works by the composer, presented in a table accompanied by catalog records, highlighting both the diversity of his production and its relevance to Amazonian musical memory. The study demonstrates that Dirson Costa’s work extended beyond composition and conducting, contributing significantly to the consolidation of musical institutions and practices in Amazonas throughout the twentieth century. It concludes that his legacy is important for understanding the development of music in the region and for preserving Amazonian musical heritage.
