Research Article History of Historiography in the Amazon: the Historical and Geographical Institutes of Pará and Amazonas in constructing a regional historiographic field (1917-1951) Barros, Lucilvana Ferreira dos Santos Abstract in English: Abstract This article is a contribution to Brazilian and Amazonian historiographies regarding the intellectual scenario of the early 20th century, proposing to analyze the role of the Historical and Geographical Institute of Pará (IHGP) and the Geographical and Historical Institute of Amazonas (IGHA) in constructing a regional historiographic field in the Amazon, between 1917 and 1951. The process of creating the historical institutes of the Amazon and the concurrent movement of disciplinary specialization in the region, contributing to the construction of an Amazonian historiographic field, is investigated on journals, chapters, and articles. The initial reading allowed us to understand that the IHGP and IGHA were created in response to the rubber crisis and republican influences. The historians of these institutes institutionalized their productions by publishing in their journals, whose narratives revealed a concern with elaborating a history of Amazonian origins in dialogue with the history of Brazil. |

Abstract in English: Abstract The article explores Cecílio Báez’s work La Tirania en el Paraguay (1903), analysing how the concepts of Walter Benjamin, Gilles Deleuze, and Félix Guattari aid in understanding tradition, memory, and territoriality. Báez, situated within the context of the Novecentos, criticises tyrannies and proposes a reconfiguration of Paraguayan identity through education. The analysis engages with Brezzo, Centurión, Corbo and Cerna Villagra to comprehend the Platense historiographical ecosystem. The conclusions highlight that Báez’s work, by reinterpreting the past through a romantic and evolutionist lens, contributes to the construction of Paraguayan identities shaped by the science of his time, which considered biology, morality, and historical senses as the foundations of nationality. |

Artigo Original The establishment of an andro-centered field for history in nineteenth-century France: the “Dauriat question” at the Institut Historique de Paris Maleval, Isadora Tavares Abstract in Portuguese: Resumo Nos últimos anos, a história da historiografia tem se proposto a repensar o estabelecimento do campo da história no século XIX problematizando suas marcações misóginas, características e sintomas do processo de disciplinarização. Abstract in English: Abstract In the past years, the history of historiography has proposed to rethink the establishment of the field of history in the 19th century, problematizing its misogynistic features, characteristics and symptoms of the disciplinary process. This article is an attempt to contribute to this debate, focusing on the participation of a “woman of letters”, the feminist Louise Dauriat, in the history congress organized by the Institut Historique de Paris, in 1837, and the entire dispute that ensued from then on. We start from this event to understand the rejection suffered by women historians throughout the 1800s, especially in relation to the ban on entry into institutions that proposed to establish formats of historical research and writing, and the problems that such ostracism caused in terms practical and epistemic. |

Original Article A Reactionary History? Abstract in English: Abstract The present text aims to propose a few hypotheses about the current de-democratization of the past in the United States of the Trump Age, from the standpoint of a case study of anti-Critical Race Theory (CRT) laws approved by the Republican Party in a series of states and their assault on the honest judgment of the US history of slavery and racial violence. The text concludes that this assault is part of a larger process of political de-democratization that aims to, among other things, redefine the links between history and the polis in order to legitimize the “exit from democracy” currently underway in the country. |

Abstract in English: Abstract: In this article, we propose the development of a new model for thinking about the history of poetry, now divorced from the history of literature and the ongoing crisis it has been facing since the 1960s. In the articulated exposition, we engage with Márcia Abreu (2022) in advocating for materiality, reflecting on the non-documentary nature of poetic objects - mechanisms that establish their own uncriticizable reality. Thus, we assume the hypothesis that poems should be read through a feedback loop overlaid with the materiality of documents and various realities, considering the logic of bipartite temporality in both internal dimensions (genres, forms, structures) and external dimensions (circulation spaces, discourses). Based on these assumptions, we argue for the dissolution of criteria of value, nationality, and rigid periodic separation in arrow-like format, in favor of an amplitude of territorialized space and a geometry of intersecting eccentric circles. |

Artigo Original Nationalist historiography and revisionism in Peru in the mid-20th century Pablo Macera and his representation of the precursors of independence Loayza, Alex Abstract in Spanish: Resumo Este artículo presenta un panorama de la historiografía latinoamericana y peruana sobre la ilustración en la década de 1950. Abstract in English: Abstract This article presents an overview of Latin American and Peruvian historiography of the Enlightenment in the 1950s. It is argued that in Peru there was a traditional vision of the Enlightenment that connected it directly with the independence process by locating in it the development of a national consciousness in the Creole elite. This perspective was articulated with the official discourse that attributed a heroic character to them: the Peruvian Creoles were the «precursors» of Peruvian independence. In his high school thesis, Pablo Macera criticized this nationalist discourse by showing that the heroic representation of the Creole «precursors» hid the fact that they were economically, socially, and politically conservative, not revolutionary. Macera, in contrast to the precursors, identified other minor actors who would be more «revolutionary» in their ideas and political proposals. Likewise, this thesis presents an early questioning of the traditional history of ideas current in Latin America by basing itself on the sociology of knowledge that allows it to pay attention to the social and discursive context of the thought and action of the Lima Creoles of the 18th century. Based on these approaches, it is argued that Macera’s work can be located within a revisionist historiographical discourse. |

Artigo Original The Historiography of (T)terror in the French Revolution: From the Classical Perspective to Critical Revision (1794– 2024) Carvalho, Daniel Gomes de Abstract in Portuguese: Resumo Este artigo explora uma dupla-hipótese. Abstract in English: Abstract This article explores a dual hypothesis. First, with regard to (T)error, it argues that the historiography of the French Revolution – encompassing both Jacobin-Marxist and liberal-revisionist traditions – has long been dominated by a specific paradigm established in the late eighteenth and throughout the nineteenth centuries by authors such as Tallien, Constant, Maistre, Hegel, and Marx. This paradigm conceptualizes terror simultaneously as a system and as a clearly delimited historical period. Second, the article contends that over the past decade historiography – led by authors still relatively unknown in Brazil, including Annie Joudan, Carla Hesse, Colin Jones, Côme Simien, Jean-Clément Martin, Marisa Linton, and Michel Biard – has sought to move beyond this paradigm, offering new approaches to the years 1793 and 1794. Taken together, these works signal the emergence of a new interpretative framework. To achieve these objectives, the article outlines the main historiographical currents on revolutionary terror, which also requires a brief analysis of key revolutionary events. In doing so, it aims to provide a critical synthesis, made necessary by the complexity and breadth of this historiography. |

Artigo Original The disappearance of man in the historical horizon of technical development: Traces of a philosophy of history in Friedrich Kittler Gonçalves, Murilo Abstract in Portuguese: Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar os traços de uma filosofia da história no pensamento de Friedrich Kittler a partir do fio condutor da ideia do desaparecimento do homem. The objective of this article is to present the traces of a philosophy of history in the thought of Friedrich Kittler based on the guiding thread of the idea of the disappearance of man. To this end, we will investigate its media archeology in order to demonstrate how the emergence of the modern subject is the result of a certain historical arrangement of technologies of production (processing), diffusion (transmission) and archiving (storage) of information, that is, of a registration system, established at the turn of the 18th century to the 19th century. The hypothesis of the disappearance of man arises when technical conditions fundamentally change, on the one hand, with the mechanization of inscription practices (with the typewriter, the gramophone and the cinematographic camera) and, on the other, with the digitalization processes of second half of the 20th century. |

Artigo Original Cinema and the production of historical knowledge. On the film adaptation project of the Battle of Bouvines Brandi, Felipe Abstract in Portuguese: Resumo O medievalista Georges Duby (1919-1996) sempre concebeu a História como um ofício de comunicação. Abstract in English: Abstract French historian Georges Duby (1919-1996) has always conceived History as a communication craft. Therefore, he sought to broaden his audience, and made use of different modern means of communication (radio, television, and cinema). In the early 1980s, Duby was invited to be part of the film adaptation of his book, Le Dimanche de Bouvines, with Miklós Jancsó as director, Serge July as screenwriter, and Gérard Dépardieu and Nastassja Kinski as the leading actors. Although abandoned during production, this film project will lead Duby to question the ways in which historical knowledge is produced. Through a study of Duby’s private archives, kept at the Institut Mémoire de l’Édition Contemporaine (IMEC), this paper aims to go behind the scenes of the cinematic adventure of Le Dimanche de Bouvines and bring to light Duby’s important reflections on cinema as a screen where the very limits of knowledge produced by medievalism are rendered visible. This article seeks to demonstrate the difficulties arising from the tension between the commercial ambitions of the film project and Duby’s own demand for historical accuracy, discussing how this demand — along with his refusal to make any concessions to anachronism — may ultimately become obstacles to a meaningful encounter between history and cinema. |

Original Article Beyond Politics: Reconstructing the Political through Arbitration in Brazilian Boundary Diplomacy under Imperialism Almeida, Fernando Vale De Abstract in English: Abstract Drawing on Pierre Rosanvallon’s conceptual distinction between politics and the political, this article argues that the latter can only be apprehended through what Rosanvallon terms a globalizing analysis: an analytical approach that reconstructs the structures of intelligibility, legitimacy, and normativity through which collective life is organized. Rather than treating the political as a mere aggregation of institutions, actors, or events, I examine how political meaning is produced, constrained, and rendered legitimate in situations of tension and asymmetry. To do so, I analyze the boundary arbitration between Brazil and the United Kingdom, the Pirara Question (1904), and situate it within the unequal imperial international order of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The article shows that the arbitration instance functioned not only as a diplomatic mechanism, but as a political grammar through which Brazil sought to affirm sovereignty, legality, and international legitimacy under conditions of structural inequality. By mobilizing contributions from conceptual history, political theory, philosophy, and sociology as analytical instruments - rather than as external supplements - I demonstrate how a globalizing analysis of the political allows historians to move beyond event-centered narratives and to historicize the normative foundations of political action itself. |

Artigo Original The Enemy of the Window and the Lover of Landscape: on repressions and visual presences in the phenomenology of Frank Ankersmit (2001-2012) Santiago Júnior, Francisco das Chagas Fernandes Abstract in Portuguese: Resumo O texto investiga alguns dos tratamentos dados às imagens visuais na obra de Frank Ankersmit dos anos 1990 em diante, acompanhando como ocorreu um diálogo com a visualidade em sua fase fenomenológica. Abstract in English: Abstract The text investigates some of the treatments given to visual images in Frank Ankersmit’s work from the 1990s onwards, following how he developed a dialogue with visuality in his phenomenological phase. The analysis investigates the Ankersmit’s writings, images fulfilled functions that were sometimes paradoxical, as the final work of the Dutchman moved between: rejecting a certain conception of the historical text as a window; and approach the historical experience as a visual experience. The text demonstrates Ankersmit’s sui generis position and the conflict between textualist theory, marked by strong repression of images, and the enhancement of the visual before and when he enters the horizon of the presence of the past. |

Abstract in English: Abstract In The Surviving Image, Georges Didi-Huberman suggests an approximation between the experience and the work of Aby Warburg and Antonin Artaud, following the trajectory and reading of Nietzsche. They share the German philosopher’s experience of psychic collapse and, among themselves, the catastrophe of the war. This dual tragedy was traversed, in both cases, by the experience of displacement to the “other”: travel and contact with the indigenous cultures of the Pueblos and the Tarahumaras, respectively. These displacements profoundly marked their works, their diagnoses of the crisis of Western culture, and the very experience of psychic breakdown. Immersed in collapse, both continuously retraced their journeys through remembrance and writing - a scriptural exercise that suggests a dual therapeutic function, both personal and collective. In this sense, this study seeks to establish the problem of the decomposition of identity not merely as a clinical symptom but as a common intellectual problematic, linking them to ontological conceptions of life derived from Nietzschean readings. |

Abstract in English: Abstract This article consists of a contribution to the state of the art of Reader-Response theories, that, due to its complexity, has provided great contributions to historical studies. However, we also identified that there was a great division between such currents, during the 1960s and 1990s: between those that avoided emphasizing the social and historical dimension of the act of reading and the theories that sought their foundations in social and historical actions to explain the reception of literary works. In this sense, we will address the German reception theories and the dissident currents that explored the social, and historical dimensions such as Stanley Fish’s reader-response criticism and the empirical study of literature and cultural dimension as in the case of Gabriele Schwab’s theoretical study on reading as cultural contact. |

Abstract in English: Abstract Between july 1843 and january 1845, General Abreu e Lima kept a private diary, written during the period he lived in Rio de Janeiro. There, he was part of a social network that included persons from the brazilian imperial government, army officers and individuals who where committed to building a national history based on the newly founded Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro. In the diary, he recorded the meetings, plots, agreements and disagreements with these characters. In this article, I analyze from this diary how Abreu e Lima cultivated this social network with high- ranking members of brazilian politics of the nineteenth century while also becoming a historian before it. I approach it as a document that makes it possible to observe the author’s communication with himself about the daily life that surrounded him and the craft he practiced. This allowed me to question how a General with a past as a controvertial writer in the regency period now constructed himself as a homme-des-lettres dedicated to history in the brazilian capital. |

Artículo de Revisión The Legitimacy of Athenian Imperialism in Historiography: A Critical Analysis Based on the Marxist–Inspired School in the Hispanic Sphere Valdovinos, José Agustín Vásquez Abstract in Spanish: Resumo Este artículo identifica y analiza a la Escuela de Inspiración Marxista en el Ámbito Hispánico, en el estudio del imperialismo ateniense, agrupando a autores que comparten influencias teóricas y enfoques comunes. Abstract in English: Abstract This article identifies and analyzes the Marxist-Inspired School in the Hispanic Sphere, in the study of Athenian imperialism, grouping together authors who share common theoretical influences and approaches. Drawing from the experiences of its authors in contexts of political resistance to authoritarian regimes in Latin America and Spain, this school examines the role of social classes and the political subjectification of the demos in Classical Greece. Through a methodological approach structured around theoretical influences, historical subjects, sources, and the legitimacy of imperialism, it highlights the role of conflict and concord between the elite and the popular classes in the development of the Athenian imperialist project. This Marxist–inspired school offers a critical perspective on power relations and class dynamics within Athenian democracy. This methodological proposal underscores the distinctive contribution of this hispanic school and provides a tool for future comparative historiographical studies. |

Abstract in English: Abstract The article analyzes the development of sports historiography in the main academic journals indexed in Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico between 2010 and 2023. Although research on sports practice is an expanding topic in academic and multidisciplinary terms, publications covering this subject in the leading academic journals of the continent show limited coverage. It is proposed that the historiographic dissemination of sports is in an emerging phase. Even though research on these topics has increased, scientific journals have not significantly incorporated studies aimed at addressing these issues in their editorials. The methodology used in the research involved reviewing 76 academic journals from the mentioned countries between 2010 and 2023, selecting published articles on sports for analysis. |

Special Issue The Battle for Jambudvīpa: Pseudohistory in Sri Lanka Rathanasara, Kaudagammana Abstract in English: Abstract This study critically examines contemporary efforts to reinterpret Jambudvīpa by relocating key Buddhist sites from their historically recognised locations in India to Sri Lanka. An analysis of the works of selected Sinhalese authors and organisations demonstrates how such claims, often framed as expressions of cultural pride or nationalist revival, contradict well-established archaeological, textual, and epigraphic evidence. Although presented in patriotic terms, these narratives lack scholarly credibility and advance ideological agendas aimed at reshaping national identity through religious history. This study underscores the importance of rigorous, evidence-based historiography in countering pseudohistorical claims and promoting a balanced understanding of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage. |

Special Issue Twentieth Century Historical Methods in Sri Lanka and S.G. Perera’s A History of Ceylon for Schools Portz, Josie Abstract in English: Abstract Twentieth-century pre-independence Sri Lanka saw the emergence of a new generation of historians that embraced “modern” approaches to writing history. As in other regions of South Asia, these histories were often in service of projects of identity formation. One historian from this group, S.G. Perera, made significant contributions towards knowledge of the history of the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka in particular, translating a significant amount from Portuguese historical materials. As part of a larger project investigating the relationship between historical practice and Catholic identity through the work of Sri Lankan Jesuit historian and priest S.G. Perera, this article focuses on Perera’s 1932 textbook, A History of Ceylon for Schools. Using qualitative coding methods, it observes the historical method and discourse used in Perera’s textbook to demonstrate how he worked within this modern tradition to rhetorically advance a Catholic, Sri Lankan nationalist perspective. |

Special Issue Beyond the Narrative: Estado da Índia Renegades Under Historical and Philosophical Perspective Nogueira, Eduardo Borges de Carvalho Abstract in English: Abstract This article aims to present both an unconventional object of analysis (renegades) and an unusual historical-philosophical approach in studies concerning phenomena located in the State of India. A powerful portion of the Portuguese Empire, this region hosted the only inquisitorial court established overseas by the Portuguese Crown, which, through its investigative procedures generating valuable documentation, made it possible to access the life experiences of six men identified as apostates and renegades. Thus, drawing on concepts from Agamben’s philosophy (the sacred and the profane) and Foucault (transgression) to understand the phenomenon of renegation among subjects of the Catholic Crown in India between the 16th and 17th centuries, this work seeks to propose a historiographical perspective that goes beyond merely recounting past experiences, instead delving into them in greater depth. |

Special Issue Ranajit Guha and Dipesh Chakrabarty on the Limits of History: dialogues with Rabindranath Tagore Oliveira, Mirian Santos Ribeiro de Santos, Pedro Afonso Cristovão dos Abstract in English: Abstract At the turn of the 21st century, South Asian historians Ranajit Guha (1923-2023) and Dipesh Chakrabarty (1948-) turned their attention to the discussion of the limits of history. In this paper, we analyze the limits of history and possible new approaches to historiography as understood by both historians, with a focus on the dialogue with the works by Rabindranath Tagore proposed by them. We argue that: 1) the validity of history as a concept or as discipline to deal with categories such as the Anthropocene or the planet does not depend on expanding the conceptual limits of history indefinitely, and could benefit from the methodological strategy of writing oneself into a history that is, to some extent, one’s own; 2) to do so, creativity, imagination, and empathy combine not to write another version of a single and all-encompassing history, but to recognize multiple worlds that articulate the human, the non-human, and the more-than-human. |

Special Issue Trust, Testimony, and the Epistemic Value of Historical Narrative Thompson, Verónica Tozzi Abstract in English: Abstract A significant contribution of narrativist philosophy of history (whether analytical, phenomenological, or poststructuralist) lies in its critique of relying solely on “strictly” epistemic criteria to evaluate historical narratives. Rather than assessing them based on empirical evidence alone, which is often seen as neutral and value-free, narrativism calls for a broader perspective. This is because no description of people and their behavior can be value-neutral. Narrativism thus aligns with constructivist theories of linguistic meaning, linked to the “linguistic turn.” I propose a dialogue between narrativism and the epistemology of testimony. By adopting the latter’s concepts (trust, authority, and epistemic community), narrativism can 1) reconstruct practices of epistemic validation in history and 2) address the historian’s responsibility to marginalized voices. Simultaneously, I argue that the epistemology of testimony should engage with narrativism to better understand the complexity of narrative constructions in epistemic communities. |

Special Issue Mapping Theory of History after the Linguistic Turn: New Realism and the Epistemic Approach Zeleňák, Eugen Abstract in English: Abstract During the last decades of the 20th century, the theory of history experienced an influence of the linguistic turn, primarily through the narrativist movement. Recently, however, interest in narrativism and the linguistic turn declined, and several new approaches to the theory of history emerged. In the paper, I discuss just two of them and, where relevant, I focus on how they transform or criticize narrativism. Namely, I explore new realism and an epistemic approach. The latter approach is developed in various forms, from which I select the so-called pragmatist non-representationalism and the approach focusing on the role of evidence in history. The paper aims to categorize and to characterize a couple of interesting positions as well as to offer a very selective map of what has been happening in the theory of history after the linguistic turn. |

Special Issue Humpty Dumpty Historiography: How Historical Theorizing Missed the Linguistic Turn Roth, Paul A. Abstract in English: Abstract The phrase “the linguistic turn” owes much of its currency in and out of historiography either to Richard Rorty’s classic 1967 anthology or John Toews’ much cited 1987 essay, each of which employs that term in their respective titles. Within historical theory particular significance has been attributed to Toews’ essay for its role in identifying a singular theoretical moment. The pervasive theoretical influence attributed to “the linguistic turn” and the role of this specific essay in heralding that moment remains undiminished. Yet despite all this attention, an important thematic connection between the two works has been missed. As a result, the most basic problem raised by the linguistic turn remains unacknowledged, hence undiscussed, and so unresolved. To appreciate why requires revisiting issues actually raised under the rubric of “the linguistic turn” and so making clear the deep thematic connections between Rorty’s anthology and Toews’ essay. |

Abstract in English: Abstract The notion of the linguistic turn and its implications became particularly prominent within Anglophone academic contexts, where it emerged as a central theme in discussions of historical theory. This article examines other intellectual traditions that, in different ways, also rearticulated the role of language and narrative in the constitution of historical knowledge, with particular attention to José Ortega y Gasset, whose contributions have frequently been neglected in these debates. Whereas Danto, Mink, and White, from an epistemological standpoint, treated narrative and metaphor as cognitive instruments, Ortega advanced an ontological framework that safeguards a place for historical reality. The aim here is not to present him as a precursor to the Anglophone formulations of the linguistic turn, but rather to demonstrate how, in parallel with these developments, he articulated modes of inquiry capable of preserving the domain of historical reality. Ortega consistently maintained attention to the ontological particularities of the human past. To elucidate these particularities, this article introduces two conceptual categories: entities that function analogously to dramas and dramatic substances. |

Special Issue Koselleck, Danto, and Total History Shain, Ralph Abstract in English: Abstract This paper argues that there are still lessons that theorists of history can learn from the linguistic turn in philosophy--in particular from its most influential practitioner, Wittgenstein. I take a Wittgensteinian approach in examining the concept of “total history” as it appears in the work of Koselleck and Danto. I argue that the concept is a pseudo-concept which has effects on their work even though each argues for the impossibility of its achievement. The implications are drawn for considering history as ongoing inquiry and the multiplicity of the types of questions that history seeks to answer. This approach avoids philosophical pseudo-problems and is a more assured way of establishing “history in the plural”, the phrase that has become attached to Koselleck’s work by his partisans. |

Special Issue Approaches to the History of Philosophical Concepts: Intersections of the History of Philosophy with Intellectual History and Conceptual History Manzo, Silvia Abstract in English: Abstract This article addresses historiographical questions about the concepts by which philosophy attempts to provide answers to the problems it poses. It argues for a view of philosophy as a historically dynamic intellectual practice that has no clear and fixed boundaries separating it from other disciplines. It proposes that the history of philosophy should be practiced as a kind of history that lies within, rather than outside, intellectual history. It shows that philosophical concepts are sometimes born and persist within philosophy, sometimes die without passing through philosophy, and sometimes come from or migrate to other disciplines. It also argues that the methodology of conceptual history can be helpful in the study of philosophical concepts. The article concludes that the history of philosophy is relevant in its own right and suggests how the new histories of philosophy written from postcolonial, global, and feminist perspectives are a clear example of this. |

Abstract in English: Abstract In this article, I propose an assessment of the history of science understood interdisciplinarily as the history of ideas, with the aim of analyzing and elucidating the interweaving of historical and philosophical elements in the processes of transformation and legitimization of scientific knowledge. The history of ideas demonstrates its relevance by highlighting the migration and mutation of conceptions, particularly scientific ones, across different historical and philosophical contexts. More than a mere inventory of knowledge, this discipline seeks to understand how traditions and debates shape and accompany the movement of ideas and beliefs over time. Through this approach, it becomes possible to identify the traces and marks that delineate the various receptions and interpretations of ideas, as well as to clarify their transformations across different periods, thereby emphasizing the dynamic and continuous nature of the construction of human knowledge. |

Special Issue Toward a postproblematic history: Rethinking the discipline in the wake of the linguistic turn Pihlainen, Kalle Abstract in English: Abstract The article advances the idea of a “postproblematic” history, arguing that the discipline move beyond its persistent focus on epistemology and the attendant fact-fiction debate. It sees these discussions as at an impasse and hindering the field’s development. A postproblematic approach entails two key shifts. First, it rejects the seemingly unresolvable epistemological debate that has dominated discussions. Second, it asks that historians abandon the search for “answers.” Instead, it urges them to embrace their roles as both antiquarians and politically engaged actors, collecting and presenting historical information while acknowledging that the meanings imposed on the past are inextricably tied to present-day concerns and values. This overall shift requires revisiting earlier theoretical positions, including a reconsideration of the ethical implications of poststructuralist thought, a rethinking of the societal role of the historian, and reaching a better appreciation of the ethical relationship between historian and reader. |

Special Issue Beyond the performativity of language. The linguistic turn and social constructivism in Leviathan and Air-Pump Martini, María de los Ángeles Abstract in English: Abstract: Forty years after the publication of Steven Shapin and Simon Schaffer’s book, Leviathan and the Air-Pump, this paper aims to examine the philosophical commitments that the authors assumed when they recognized themselves as part of the social constructivist perspective of Strong Programme. This vision, deeply rooted in Wittgensteinian philosophy, addressed the analysis of scientific knowledge in defense of the primacy of practice. However, constructivism has been naively interpreted as limiting itself to the performativity of language. The review of these commitments allows me to explore the affinities between language and materiality in the framework of their work. Finally, I examine the approach that the authors made to the philosopher’s body as constitutive of the experimental form of life in seventeenth-century England. I seek to clarify where the conceptual effort and complexity of investigating scientific practices through Wittgenstein’s notions of form of life and language-game lay. |

Dossiê Irrealism and Anti-realism: the thesis of accumulation in contemporary philosophy of history Ricon, Leandro Couto Carreira Bade, Luiz Henrique Bechtlufft Abstract in Portuguese: Resumo: O artigo analisa duas posturas filosóficas relativas à história, o antirrealismo e o irrealismo, com relação à problemática da referência e à chamada tese da acumulação. Abstract in English: Abstract: The article analyzes two philosophical stances regarding history, anti-realism and irrealism, concerning the problem of reference and the accumulation thesis. It presents a definition of the accumulation thesis, followed by a discussion in which objections from anti-realist and irrealist philosophers to this thesis are exposed. In our reading, these objections are fundamentally linked to the stances of the two philosophies regarding the referentiality of historiographical terms, although the anti-realistic philosophy of history still clings to a softened version of both the accumulation thesis and the referential possibility of history. Finally, it demonstrates that the irrealist stance in the philosophy of history constitutes a radicalization of the objections raised to the possibility of objectivity in history by anti-realist philosophy. The central argument of the article is that the issues of referentiality and accumulation are fundamentally related within the scope of the philosophy of history, given that changes in one imply changes in the other. |

Dossier The Visual Frontiers of the Linguistic Turn: Effects of Presence and Effects of Meaning in Historical Cinema: Crossed Reflections on the Work of Robert A. Rosenstone and H.U. Abstract in English: Abstract: Historical cinema is one of the most important audiovisual media through which we represent the past. Cinema challenges our conception of the past and history, as it adds to the usual interpretive activity (understood as the central practice of the humanities and social sciences) the presence, real or fictionalized, of the past. Following Gumbrecht, historical cinema expands the boundaries of our purely textual conception of history, highlighting the effects of meaning but also the effects of presence of the visualized past. Its nature is to force and expand the limits of a historiographical conception inspired first by historicism and then by the linguistic turn. It is not only a matter of interpreting the past but also of visualizing it, feeling it, and being moved by it. According to Rosenstone, historical cinema can provide a realistic and authentic depiction of past events, while also powerfully redefining them for current generations. And this is the visual challenge of historical cinema, especially experimental cinema, which complements the critical reflection that the linguistic shift has brought to the discipline of historiography. Gumbrecht’s historical theory connects with Rosenstone’s defense of historical cinema. |

Special Issue South Asian Historiography from the British Period to Today Jayaneththi, Ramesha Dharmarathna, Sumudu Abstract in English: Abstract: This essay descriptively evaluates the South Asian historiography from British colonial times to today, showing how changing ideas, shifting politics, and fierce debates over knowledge have shaped the field. In the nineteenth century, colonial scholars and administrators used Orientalist philology, utilitarian critiques, administrative surveys, and thick codification manuals to shape narratives of South Asia’s past. By the early twentieth century, nationalist historians turned history into a weapon against colonial rule, shaping stirring tales of ancient Hindu glory. After independence, the field branched out and new historical methods were adopted and new theories were used under revisionist historians. In India, Marxist historians brought in structural analysis, agrarian studies, and materialist methods, while the Cambridge School recast politics around local favors and rivalries among the elite. Starting in the 1980s, Subaltern Studies and feminist historians reshaped the field, turning attention toward peasants in fields, factory workers, women, and others long pushed to the margins. By turning to unexpected sources and postcolonial theory, these scholars laid bare the elitism woven through colonial and nationalist histories and challenged the deep-set assumptions about knowledge. |

Special Issue Colonial Historiography of Malabar: Towards an Alternative to History Abraham, Renu Elizabeth Abstract in English: Abstract: This article aims to assess the impact of colonial historiography on precolonial modes of knowledge from Malabar. It examines the colonial writing of the early history of Malabar based on a local tradition centered on Cēramān Perumāḷ in manuals and gazetteers produced in British Malabar and the Indian princely states of Cochin and Travancore in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The colonial-era historians interpreted the contradictions contained in the Perumāḷ tradition as signs of an ahistorical society. This study offers a critique of the conception of ahistoricity and argues that the colonial attempt to historicize the Perumāḷ tradition reveals a gap between Western positivist history and local mythmaking. It reads the contradictions as integral to the tradition and finds that they offer a window into the heterogeneous contexts in which the Perumāḷ served as a founder-hero for rival political, economic, and religious stakeholders in Indian Ocean trade since the twelfth century. |

Abstract in English: Abstract: The aim of this paper is to introduce and situate the reader within the debate on Colligatory Terms, while also identifying latent issues of interest to history and philosophy that emerge from this topic. To achieve this, it presents a selection of the contributions on colligation and colligatory terms in the philosophy of history, while also critically examining these contributions. The discussion begins with a brief introduction, followed by an exploration of William Whewell’s (1847) notion of colligation-the philosopher who first introduced it-and extends to Jouni-Matti Kuukkanen (2015), who recently addressed the topic in historiography. Finally, the concluding remarks offer a suggested delimitation for colligatory terms. |

Abstract in English: Abstract: This article, inspired by Roger Chartier’s call to “listen to the dead with one’s eyes,” seeks to revisit the historiographical and philosophical contributions of Étienne Souriau, a thinker whose work remains marginal to Brazilian philosophical and historiographical traditions. Focusing on L’instauration philosophique (1939), the article reconstructs Souriau’s central investigation into how philosophy is constituted and develops historically. It then presents Souriau’s concept of pleroma - a pluralistic cosmos of philosophical worlds - which challenges linear and teleological narratives of philosophical progress, emphasizing instead the collective and trans-historical construction of thought through philosophical works. Finally, it is demonstrated that, by integrating reason with historical diversity and proposing that philosophy be reduced to a collection of monuments, Souriau provided the conceptual scope for Gueroult’s structuralism, while simultaneously demystifying some of the recurrent criticisms of structuralism in the history of philosophy within the Brazilian tradition. |

Special Issue For an Impractical Past Kellner, Hans Abstract in English: Abstract: Although the field of philosophy of history is unquestionably fragmented and, at present, without a center, this is not a new situation. To answer the question “what comes next?” without somehow explaining the future through the past, we need to confront the term postmodern in its original and paradoxical sense, as put forward by Jean-François Lyotard - as that which precedes and cannot yet be understood or narrativized. Thus, in the present, the “sideshadow” would prevail, which are all the possibilities that will not be accounted for in “what really happened,” but which are of great importance at the moment. This is what the article is about: the unrealized possibilities of the future rather than a narrative of succession where the future seems an inevitable derivation of the present; and how historical narrative desublimates the past in order to explain it. The proposal of an impractical past is a call for humility on the part of the historian when presenting explanations of “what happened.” |

Special Issue Theories of History and Histories of Philosophy: What Dialogue Is Possible? Abstract in English: Abstract: The disciplinary disputes between history and philosophy have a history that is itself a shared and entangled one, marked by reciprocal borrowings of categories and methods. This dossier aims to denaturalize the common opposition between an ahistorical history of reason, supposedly the responsibility of the philosopher, and a successive history of facts, supposedly the responsibility of the historian. Investigating the processes of autonomization and professionalization of each discourse can contribute to a heightened awareness of this doxa. The dossier brings together original articles that problematize objects common to philosophy and history in a relational and interdisciplinary manner, thereby displacing the traditional ways in which each discipline understands itself. |

Abstract in English: Abstract: The linguistic turn in history emerged around 1960, first questioning the scientific value of declarative statements in the discipline and later defending the aesthetic, ethical, and epistemological-cognitive character of narration in historical representation. After decades of heated debate, the linguistic turn went from being a rejected topic to the mainstream, and more recently, to competing with other theoretical perspectives. In this introductory text to the dossier, we intend to question the “after” of the linguistic turn: have its relevant themes been exhausted, as if its program had been fulfilled? Or do its questions and proposals have enough vitality to propel it forward? What contributions can the history of this line of thought still receive? Among the contributions received, there were several answers to these questions, some convergent, others not. Throughout the text, we intend to present them according to how each article responded to the initial questions. |
