Open-access PEDAGOGICAL SILENCE OR DISCURSIVE MEDIATION: DISSENT AND REGIMES OF TRUTH IN EDUCATION

This article draws on Discourse Analysis, Social Memory, and the critical perspective of the Digital Humanities to discuss teacher education for the mediation of controversial topics. Based on action research in a Brazilian school (2023-2025), we argue that confronting polarization requires shifting the way teachers occupy their subject-position and making explicit the regimes of truth in the school. We propose discursive mediation as a category articulating competing discursive formations and the institutional conditions for dissent. The analysis of six profiles, illustrated by episodes, reveals strategies between impossible neutrality and ethical engagement; teachers’ self-assessed preparedness rose from 30.3% to 69.3%, resulting in an institutional policy for addressing dissent.
