SUMMARY
Six soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) varieties, Santa-Rosa, Viçosa, Paraná, PT 227687, PI 229358 and PI 171451, were tested under greenhouse conditions in free choice type of test, for feeding preference of the leaf beetle Colaspis sp. (probably Colaspis occidentalis (L.)). Two types of tests were made, leveling or not artificially the plant heights, by placing bricks underneath the pots of the lower plants. It seems that plant height did not contribute to the differences observed among varieties. The average percentage of leaf areas eaten when the heights were leveled were 15.2; 11.7; 10.5; 6.9; 5.4 and 4.8 respectively for the above mentioned varieties. When the heights were natural the averages were 25.5; 19.3; 15.2; 7.6; 9.1 and 6.3 respectively.
Probably, the plant introduction PI 171451 may be used in Brazil as a source for resistance against the leaf beetle Colaspis sp.
