A trajectory of excellenceRevista Bioética begins a promising chapter in its trajectory, reaffirming its commitment to consolidate itself as a reference in bioethics not only in Brazil, but globally. This ambitious objective translates the essence of the journal: to foster multidisciplinary discussions, aimed at academic training and constant improvement of health professionals, promoting scientific excellence and transforming knowledge into a fundamental tool for progress 1.
It is with great honor that I take over leadership of Revista Bioética. Allow me a brief introduction: I am a pediatrician, specialized in hospital administration, with a PhD in bioethics from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. I work at the Juruá Regional Hospital, in Cruzeiro do Sul/AC, and at the Regional Council of Medicine of Acre. I served as secretary-general (2019-2024) and coordinated important commissions at the Brazilian Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) 2.
I reinforce my commitment to innovation and inclusion, ethical principles that will be decisive in facing challenges of contemporary scientific publishing and, thus, leading Revista Bioética to new heights. To achieve this, I count on the experience I acquired over the years and on my dedication, along with the support of other editors, secretaries Vanessa de Santana and Lorna Weil, and on the Committee and Editorial Board.
Among the themes that will guide the journal, conscious automation stands out, since ethical use of artificial intelligence is an essential element for the evolution of the journal. Implementing technological tools will enable agile and accurate processes but require clear policies and strict human oversight to ensure integrity and reliability.
Regarding globalization and inclusion, the objective is to strategically boost international visibility. However, this must be combined with efforts to make science inclusive, accessible, and aligned with the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA), and findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability (FAIR) 3.
We should also mention the new criteria, policies and procedures for admission and permanence of journals in the SciELO Brazil collection, which bring great demands, reaffirming their commitment to scientific quality and open access 4. The next cycle (2025-2028) of the evaluation system of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) will also prioritize the quality of published articles, replacing the impact of journals 5.
Thus, Revista Bioética must ensure its articles meet criteria such as relevance, citation, publication in indexed databases and open access, in addition to reinforcing its presence in academic networks and graduate programs. Impact and engagement metrics are also factors that should be mentioned, since, as well as traditional impact, investment in new metrics that reflect academic and social engagement is essential, ensuring greater reach and relevance for published content.
Over the years, Revista Bioética built an intellectual legacy, resulting from accuracy and professionalism, which guide its history. This is the foundation for achieving the highest international standards and diversifying its production, contemplating different cultures and societies. Transforming Revista Bioética in a journal of global prominence is challenging and requires collective dedication. Therefore, reinforcing the editorial board and continuously improving the scientific quality are fundamental steps.
Under the leadership of the new CFM directors, of which I am a part of, we are confident Revista Bioética will continue to be a beacon for bioethics advancement, inspiring transformations, disseminating knowledge in Brazil and worldwide, defending principles and improving practices. The challenge is great, but the team’s determination and commitment make the future promising.
