For every end, a new beginningWe entered the second semester of 2024 bringing in Revista Bioética a continuous scientific platform for discussions aimed at expanding knowledge and updating topics and perspectives across various fields of bioethics, biolaw, ethics, and the humanities, in light of the many new challenges we face. In its 32 years of history, the journal continues to embody renewal via new projects and pathways, looking toward a future of constant change characterized by scientific, technological, and humanitarian transformations in an era of new realities.
The five-year term of the current council members comes to an end. For the first two and a half years, Dr. Tatiana Bragança Della Giustina led the team, creating projects and fostering connections with editors Dr. Rui Nunes, Dr. Natália Oliva Teles, and Dr. José Hiran da Silva Gallo. Via partnership, articles that highlighted the pandemic and its impact on science and humanity were published.
In the past two and a half years, following the pandemic and ongoing conflicts, new health technologies have emerged, focusing on genetics and its developments related to artificial intelligence and new communication technologies. At the same time, there are issues related to the environment, with a focus on the future of climate change and reflections on social responsibility, solidarity, ethics, and global bioethics.
Leading Revista Bioética during this period has not been an easy task, but new initiatives have been crucial for the achievements reached, always on this path of responsibility and commitment to this unique journal, which now holds a B1 rating in the Qualis Periódicos classification by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), the highest rating for a multidisciplinary journal in Brazil.
During this period, the Revista Bioética Committee 1 was established, marking a significant advancement in the quality and efficiency of article evaluation, highlighting the value of the journal and the Brazilian Federal Council of Medicine’s (CFM) commitment to bioethics and its various dimensions. The system used by the journal was also updated, which is still undergoing modifications to make the website as accessible as possible for authors, reviewers, and readers 2. We are continually adapting to the policy criteria and procedures necessary for the journal’s continued presence in the SciELO collection and other databases.
Especially during this final phase of management, we participated in the 16th World Conference on Bioethics, Medical Ethics, and Health Law, which brought together renowned national and international experts for lectures and discussions on relevant contemporary topics, such as animal research, assisted dying, bioethics education, cultural pluralism, the environment, nutrition, human rights, justice, and other aspects of life. In addition, we participated in events promoted by the CFM and other institutions, in order to increasingly disseminate Revista Bioética.
In this context, new publications featuring in-depth and updated analyses of healthcare professional education, addressing all stages of training with significant experiences, have reinforced the importance of the topic. Additionally, they highlighted the importance of actions that ensure a commitment to health education and discussions in this area move towards a learning process that encompasses science, ethics, bioethics, and the dilemmas of the humanities. Particular emphasis is placed on the pursuit of quality medical education, aiming for a new learning approach that enables universal and equitable healthcare delivery, free from stigmatization or discrimination, while understanding health as a representation of human dignity.
Participating in the journal and in the new projects and achievements has been an honor and a source of great pride; it has been a dream come true, and allowed us to grow together and shine alongside Revista Bioética and the CFM. Staff members Vanessa de Santana and Lorna Weil exemplify this commitment; through their tireless and skilled work, they strive to enhance their knowledge year after year to assist the editors and editorial team of the journal with the necessary rigor.
With the new term, Dr. Dilza Teresinha Ambrós Ribeiro will take on the role of editor-in-chief 3. With her esteemed background as a counselor and a doctor in bioethics, she will skillfully lead the journal, paving the way for new ideas and projects that broaden discussions on human survival, scientific development and progress, as well as harmony and respect among people and cultures, in alignment with nature.
My gratitude is a reflection of the respect and affection I have received, as well as the opportunity to contribute to this journal, which I deeply admire and appreciate. Let us embrace the future, filled with new paths and initiatives, ensuring that we always have opportunities for bioethics and its universe of discussions!
Continue forward with the conviction that Revista Bioética represents a unique realm for knowledge and the advancement of ethics, bioethics, and human dignity!
