Open-access ‘Terras da Nossa Terra’ From Radio Waves to Newspaper Columns

This paper will examine the work of the Portuguese-Brazilian journalist José Augusto Correia Varella in the newspaper Voz de Portugal, through the analysis of his column Terras da Nossa Terra. Varella, a Portuguese immigrant, helped to spread the name of Portugal in Brazil through this column, exalting Portuguese culture and defending Portuguese-Brazilian historical-cultural relations. In addition, he used his space in the newspaper to spread the values of the Estado Novo, celebrating the regime’s own historical culture and the figure of Salazar, becoming a propaganda agent for the Portuguese Estado Novo in Brazil.
