The other side of the Empire: commercial disputes and jurisdictional conflicts in the Luso-Brazilian Empire

Abstract

This article studies the conflict of interests among Portuguese merchants - men and women - because of the creation of the Junta de Comércio, Agricultura, Fábricas e Navegação of the State of Brazil and Foreign Domains as main forum for decisions about specific problems of market in Portugal. This change created an unusual relationship of dependence of the Metropolitan trade from the old American colony, who was promoted to United Kingdom of Brazil, Portugal and Algarves.
