Poverty and assistance: historiographic debates

This dossier gathers articles which discuss the assistance to the poor at the turn of the XIX to the XX century in Portugal and Latin America. It delimits the relation among public powers and the civil society. The female leading role in the period proposes a historiographic revision on the theme, besides emphasizing the role of professionals in the health area in the transformations of the assistance.
