Open-access Under the presidential pen: the Law Land of 1850 in Rio Grande do Sul and political negotiation

Abstract

In 1850, the implementation of the Law of Land in Rio Grande do Sul made stronger the association between local elite and the Crown. At that time, farmers took a substantial number of legal processes related to disputes about land. Provincial presidents decided about those legal actions. The presidents' decisions were frequently made as result of political negotiations with terratenentes meridionais.

Law of Land; Brazilian Second Empire; political negotiation
