O presente artigo descreve o percurso do tratado hipocrático Sobre a arte médica entre os séculos III a.C. e XVII d.C., bem como analisa algumas das questões tratadas pelo autor, a saber as antíteses tyche/techné e techné/physis, a idéia da medicina como ciência causal e preditiva e as concepções epistemológicas ou a teoria do conhecimento médico.

Abstract in English:

This article presents the course of the Hippocratic book The Art from the 3rd century b.C. until the 17th century a.D., and analyzes some issues discussed by the author, viz., the antitheses tyche/techné and techné/physis, the idea of medicine as a causal and predictive science, and the epistemological conceptions or the theory of medical knowledge.

O programa mecanicista apresentado por Descartes nos Princípios da filosofia destina-se a prover explicações dos mecanismos causais do mundo material exclusivamente em termos das qualidades geométricas da matéria e do movimento. Assim compreendida, a matéria não pode conter em si mesma as fontes da sua própria atividade, mobilidade ou diversidade, o que significa dizer que forças ou quaisquer outros princípios ativos não ocupam lugar algum na ontologia mecanicista cartesiana. O artigo procura esclarecer de que modo Descartes pretende que a agência divina possa suprir o lugar das forças banidas do seu universo mecânico.

Abstract in English:

The mechanist program presented by Descartes in the Principles of the Philosophy is intended to provide explanations of the causal mechanisms of the physical world exclusively in terms of the geometrical properties of matter and motion. Thus understood, matter cannot contain in itself the sources of its own activity, mobility, or diversity, which means that forces or any other active principles do not play any role in the Cartesian mechanist ontology. This paper attempts to clarify Descartes' claim that divine agency can replace in his mechanical universe the banished forces.

A proposta deste trabalho é fornecer uma visão geral da participação de Descartes no debate concernente a questões médicas, a partir da correspondência mantida com Plempius, Regius, Van Beverwick e Van Hogelande. Essas cartas constituem importante registro da atuação de Descartes junto aos médicos, acompanhando as descobertas da época, discutindo-as e atualizando seus escritos. Além disso, essa correspondência fornece as bases para um estudo sobre o desenvolvimento que a medicina cartesiana teve na Holanda, por alguns de seus interlocutores ligados à medicina.

Abstract in English:

The aim of this work is to provide an overview of Descartes' role in the debate concerning medical questions, based on his correspondence with Plempius, Regius, Van Beverwick and Van Hogelande. These letters constitute an important record of Descartes' activity together with the doctors, following and discussing the discoveries of his time, and bringing his writings up-to-date. Moreover, this correspondence provides a basis for studying the development of Cartesian medicine in Holland, through some of his interlocutors that were involved with medicine.
