Resumo Em finais de 2019, entrevistamos por e-mail os professores Marcelo Neves e Aldo Mascareño, sugerindo-lhes um eixo comum de perguntas sobre suas trajetórias e sobre os principais desafios envolvidos na tarefa de aclimatar a teoria dos sistemas sociais de Niklas Luhmann ao contexto latino-americano. Além das duas entrevistas, fizemos uma sucinta apresentação do que denominamos cenário “pós-luhmanniano” e do potencial da recepção latino-americana para a renovação do legado sistêmico no presente, incluindo breve exploração bibliométrica de alguns padrões dessa recepção.

Abstract At the end of 2019, we interviewed by email Professors Marcelo Neves and Aldo Mascareño, presenting them with a similar list of questions on their intellectual trajectories and the principal challenges involved in the task of adapting Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory to the Latin American context. As well as the two interviews, we provide a brief presentation of what we call the ‘post-Luhmannian’ scenario and the potential for its Latin American reception to renew the systemic legacy in the present, including a short bibliometric exploration of some of the patterns evident in this reception.

Resumo Nesse artigo, argumentamos que a diferenciação funcional, o modo predominante de organização social da sociedade mundial, não tem sido uma imposição europeia na América, porque, no momento em que as duas sociedades regionais entram em contato, isso ainda não tem lugar. A diferenciação funcional é formada na relação entre Europa e América. Além disso, originam-se redes de múltiplas escalas que coevoluem com diferenciação funcional e dão um caráter particular à diferenciação americana. Com base no conceito de diferenciação funcional de Niklas Luhmann e em uma análise histórico-evolucionária do processo de diferenciação na América, identificamos momentos particulares desse desenvolvimento e suas características centrais. Concluímos que a sociologia latino-americana requer uma abordagem evolutiva da sociedade para descentralizar sua visão do presente, escapar do nacionalismo metodológico que a caracteriza e se transformar na sociologia da sociedade mundial.

Abstract In this article we argue that functional differentiation, the prevalent form of social organisation in world society, was not a European imposition on America, since it had yet to take place at the moment when the two regional societies came into contact. Functional differentiation emerged from the relationship between Europe and America. Moreover, multilayered networks also became formed, co-evolving with functional differentiation in America and giving a particular character to American differentiation. Setting out from Niklas Luhmann’s concept of functional differentiation and a historical-evolutionary analysis of the process of differentiation in America, we identify particular moments of this development and its main features. We conclude that Latin American sociology requires the adoption of an evolutionary approach to society to decentralize its vision from the present, escape the methodological nationalism that characterizes it, and transform itself into the sociology of world society.

Resumo Com base em um diálogo entre as teorias dos movimentos sociais, a antropologia do Estado, a sociologia política de Niklas Luhmann e a filosofia política contemporânea, critica-se, neste artigo, a maneira convencional pela qual se costuma descrever as dimensões políticas dos movimentos sociais. Para apreender sua rica e complexa fenomenologia, propõe-se aqui o esboço de um conceito sistêmico do político.

Abstract Based on a dialogue between the theories of social movements, the anthropology of the State, the political sociology of Niklas Luhmann and contemporary political philosophy, this article criticizes the conventional way in which the political dimensions of social movements have tended to be described. As an alternative that allows us to apprehend the rich and complex phenomenology of these movements, the author outlines a systemic concept of the political.

Resumo O artigo oferece uma autorreflexão crítica dentro da teoria de sistemas e examina programaticamente a seguinte questão: como a inclusão e a exclusão podem ser incorporadas a uma teoria do conflito cujo cerne é constituído de questões distributivas. Para tanto, propõe uma reinterpretação teórico-discursiva da forma inclusão/exclusão orientada para o conflito, de acordo com a qual a inclusão e a exclusão poderiam ser descritas como articulações políticas performativas, no sentido das teorias do discurso contemporâneas.

Abstract The article offers a critical self-reflection within the theory of systems and explores the following question: how can inclusion and exclusion be incorporated into a theory of conflict whose core is constituted by distributive issues? To this end, it proposes a theoretical-discursive reinterpretation of the inclusion/exclusion model oriented towards conflict, in which inclusion and exclusion can be described as performative political articulations, in the sense of contemporary theories of discourse.

Resumo As análises da interação foram fundamentais para discutir alguns dos pressupostos mais consolidados da reflexão sociológica sobre a ordem social e seu funcionamento. No entanto, essa complexidade foi dissolvida na identificação de uma dualidade, e mesmo oposição, entre a ordem da interação e aquela da sociedade. É assim que as pesquisas dessas áreas sociais tendem a permanecer dissociadas, separadas e desconectadas. Nesse movimento, não apenas a possibilidade de alcançar um tratamento unificado do problema da ordem social está bloqueada, mas, ainda pior, inevitavelmente se opera com visões reducionistas. O objetivo desse artigo é reconstruir as contribuições que a teoria geral dos sistemas sociais oferece em termos de método para evitar esses riscos analíticos.

Abstract Analyses of interaction have been fundamental to debating some of the most consolidated assumptions of sociological reflection on social order. However, this complexity has been dissolved in the identification of a duality, and even an opposition, between the order of interaction and that of society. Consequently, inquiries into these social areas tend to remain dissociated, separated and disconnected. In the process, not only has the possibility of achieving a unified treatment of the problem of social order been blocked, but even worse, reductionist perspectives have inevitably taken hold. The purpose of this article is to reconstruct the methodological contributions that the general theory of social systems offers to avoid these analytical risks.

Resumo Este artigo tem por objetivo analisar Brasil, país do futuro, de Stefan Zweig, destacando os nexos que ligam essa obra, a um só tempo, aos contextos intelectuais brasileiro, norte-americano e europeu, assim como à escrita sobre o exílio, sobre a viagem e sobre o cosmopolitismo. O livro diz respeito a um diálogo tenso e cheio de desencontros entre Zweig e o meio brasileiro: entre o horizonte cosmopolita e multilíngue do autor, sua impossibilidade de pertencer e seu permanente desajustamento. Concebemos ainda Brasil, país do futuro como mais um manifesto da agenda antirracista dos anos 1930 e 1940, fruto dos diálogos cruzados que não se limitam ao pensamento sobre o Brasil, mas a uma pauta intelectual e política internacional em permanente discussão e circulação nos Estados Unidos e na Europa, e que tinha no Brasil uma espécie de campo de experimentação, de certificação, de positivação das relações humanas.

Abstract This article sets out to analyse Brazil, land of the future, by Stefan Zweig, highlighting the links that connect the book to the Brazilian, North American and European intellectual contexts, as well as to travel writing, exile and cosmopolitanism. Brazil, land of the future contains a tense dialogue, full of failed encounters, between Zweig and the Brazilian milieu: between the author’s cosmopolitan and multilingual horizon, the impossibility of belonging and his constant feeling of maladjustment. We examine Brazil, land of the future as another manifesto of the 1930s and 1940s anti-racist agenda, the product of cross-dialogues that were not limited to the social reflection on Brazil, but encompassed an international intellectual and political agenda that was continually discussed and disseminated in the United States and Europe and that approached Brazil as a field for experimenting, certifying and positivizing human relations.

Resumo Neste artigo, analiso os sentidos de maternidade presentes em narrativas do parto de mulheres brancas heterossexuais de camadas médias do Rio de Janeiro, com idades entre 37 e 46 anos. Sobressai o investimento afetivo no planejamento do parto, muitos deles realizados a partir de uma perspectiva médica humanizada, reforçando uma visão da maternidade como projeto construído a partir de um campo de possibilidades dado por suas situações socioeconômicas, formas de conjugalidade e valores morais. O modo como o feto enquanto bebê figura nas narrativas aponta para concepções sobre o vínculo entre mãe e filho, construído e reforçado a partir de uma experiência corporal da gestação e do parto considerada necessária. Partindo dos conceitos de Velho e Ortner sobre projeto, agência e subjetividade, discuto como uma configuração subjetiva que valoriza especialmente a corporalidade da maternidade pode tensionar a agência dessas mulheres.

Abstract In this article, I analyse the meanings of motherhood present in the childbirth narratives of white heterosexual middle-class women in Rio de Janeiro, aged between 37 and 46 years old. The affective investment in birth preparations comes to the fore, with many of the births involving a humanized birth, reinforcing the idea of motherhood as a female project affected by the socioeconomic situations, forms of conjugality, and moral values of the women involved. How the baby figures in the narratives is also revealing of conceptions surrounding the bonds between mother and child, built and reinforced by a bodily experience of pregnancy and birth that is seen as necessary. Based on the concepts of Velho and Ortner of project, agency and subjectivity, I argue that a subjective formation that especially values an embodied motherhood can reveal the dynamic tensions involved in these women’s agency.

Resumo Por meio da descrição analítica da constituição de um ancestral de uma extensa família, com base na celebração campal dedicada à memória de um vaqueiro falecido na década de 1850 no sertão de Pernambuco, mostro um dos modos pelos quais as famílias sertanejas fazem história de si mesmas. Alguns dos elementos dos seus métodos de fazer história, contada sob a forma da genealogia e legitimada pela existência de um fundador, costumam misturar-se à história política e administrativa do município em questão. Esse artigo mostra que as famílias, como os países, procuram fazer história com instrumentos como os monumentos, os personagens célebres que, no sertão –são chamados troncos, e a sua própria celebrização ritual.

Abstract Through the analytical description of the constitution of an ancestor of an extended family, based on the celebration of a mass dedicated to the memory of a man who died in the 1850s in the Pernambuco backlands (sertão), I look to show one of the ways in which families in the region make their own history. Some of the elements of their methods of making history, told in the form of genealogies and legitimized by the existence of a founding father, frequently blend with the political and administrative history of the local municipality. Families, like countries, seek to make history using instruments such as monuments and celebrated figures – in the sertão called troncos, trunks – and their own ritual celebrations.

Resumo O artigo investiga as acepções da categoria tempo que participam dos horizontes de cognição das edições princeps (1936) de Raízes do Brasil e Sobrados e Mucambos. Ao retratar a experiência brasileira como portadora de uma configuração temporal distinta daquela identificada em sociedades tomadas por prototípicas da modernidade, essas obras tendem a caracterizar a modernização no país em dissonância com as referências institucionais, culturais, éticomorais, epistemológicas e estéticas comumente vinculadas àqueles contextos. Isso posto, conforme quer-se aqui examinar, empenhados em explanar uma configuração societária que se lhes afigurava antiparadigmática em vários de seus traços, esses mesmos ensaios logram lançar pistas valiosas para uma apreciação crítica de certo viés “substancialista” e “internalista” que, não raro, orienta a imaginação sociológica acerca da modernidade e de sua temporalidade.

Abstract This article investigates the senses and connotations of “time” that work to define the cognitive horizons of the first editions (1936) of Roots of Brazil and The mansions and the shanties. By ascribing to Brazilian society a temporal configuration distinct from those attributed to so-called central modern societies, both essays tend to depict Brazil’s modernization as a dissonant case in terms of the institutional, cultural, moral-ethical, epistemological and aesthetic patterns commonly associated with modernity. At the same time, the article also seeks to demonstrate that these very same works - striving to explain a societal configuration that appeared to them anti-paradigmatic in many of its features - offer valuable clues for a critical assessment of the “substantialist” and “internalist” biases that frequently orient the sociological imagination concerning modernity and its temporality.

Resumo A sociologia do conhecimento que se constituiu enquanto disciplina acadêmica “vive” lado a lado com outra que não o fez, mas, não obstante, se manifesta no interior de algumas disciplinas, tais como a filosofia da ciência, a história da ciência e a história intelectual. Nesse trabalho discuto o modo como cada uma delas tem-se movido. Argumento que enquanto a primeira se move ref letindo sobre as condições de possibilidade da produção de conhecimento acerca do próprio conhecimento, sobre a natureza do conhecimento que se produz nessas condições, sobre os dilemas metateóricos que supostamente atormentam a produção desse conhecimento, sobre os meios de superar esses dilemas, sobre os problemas conceituais talvez envolvidos na produção desse conhecimento e sobre os modos de solucionar esses problemas conceituais, a segunda se move oferecendo solução para problemas empíricos específicos.

Abstract The sociology of knowledge that became established as an academic discipline ‘lives’ alongside another that never did so, but nevertheless manifests itself within other disciplines, including the philosophy of science, the history of science, and intellectual history. I discuss the ways in which each of them has evolved. I argue that while the former works by reflecting on the conditions of possibility of the production of knowledge about knowledge itself, the nature of the knowledge produced under these conditions, the metatheoretical ‘dilemmas’ that supposedly plague the production of this knowledge, the means by which these dilemmas can be ‘overcome,’ the conceptual problems supposedly involved in the production of this knowledge, and the ways through which these conceptual problems can be solved, the latter works by offering solutions to specific empirical problems.

Diferentemente da maioria dos estudos sobre a história da sociologia brasileira, o autor toma a trajetória de Maria Isaura no exterior, principalmente a publicação de seus livros em outros idiomas, para entender determinados aspectos do campo intelectual nacional nas décadas de 1950, 1960 e 1970. Situa ainda a autora, uma mulher excepcional, dentro das relações de gênero da época em que trabalha.

Abstract An article in homage to Maria Isaura Pereira de Queiroz. Diverging from the majority of studies on the history of- Brazilian Sociology, the author considers the intellectua trajectory of Maria Isaura from the perspective of how her writings were received abroad, beyond Brazil’s intellectual frontiers. The publication of many of her books in foreign languages sheds light on various aspects of the Brazilian intellectual field in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The article also situates the author, a prominent woman of her time, within the context of gender relations during the period when she worked.

Resumo A entrevista com Alzira Alves de Abreu faz parte de uma iniciativa mais ampla, promovida por S&A, de rememorar a história do curso de ciências sociais na Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, que completou 80 anos em 2019. A trajetória de Alzira se entrelaça com momentos significativos por que passaram as ciências sociais no Rio de Janeiro em seus esforços de institucionalização acadêmica e consolidação enquanto campo disciplinar, especialmente com as atividades investigativas conduzidas no interior do Instituto de Ciências Sociais (ICS), centro de pesquisas da antiga Universidade do Brasil (atual UFRJ), criado em 1958. Nesse sentido, seu depoimento, além de constituir fonte importante para o resgate da memória da instituição, fornece pistas sugestivas para os estudiosos interessados em ampliar a compreensão que se tem da história daquelas disciplinas na cidade.

Abstract The interview with Alzira Alves de Abreu forms part of a broader initiative by S&A to record the history of the social sciences course at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, which completed 80 years in 2019. Alzira’s trajectory is interwoven with some of the key moments experienced by the social sciences in Rio de Janeiro in their efforts to achieve academic institutionalization and consolidation as a disciplinary field, especially with the investigative activities pursued at the Institute of Social Sciences (ICS), a research centre of the former University of Brazil (now UFRJ), created in 1958. As well as constituting an important source for the recovery of the institution’s memory, her testimony provides tantalizing leads for scholars interested in expanding our understanding of the history of these disciplines in the city.
