BEFORE ON JUSTIFICATION: ME AND LAURENT THÉVENOTThis paper aims to review the history of joint work between me and Laurent Thévenot, based on independent interests that united us between the late 1970s and the early 1980s and built up to the publication of On justification in 1991 (English edition in 2006). I describe how Thévenot contributes to pragmatic sociology in specific and to sociology in general: his ability to interpret and creatively reuse elements of various disciplines to which he is an outsider (such as philosophy and cognitive sciences) and to promote dialogue between his originary fields, statistics and economics - in which they present revolutionary contributions of their own, with, in the first, the discussion on its construction of categories, and, in the other, as the so-called economics of conventions - and sociology (in which he is enlisted ever since and remains to this day), in addition to his enormous willingness to promote dialogues between people, were essential factors for an important renewal of the social sciences.
