Notes on a demolished building: the atelier of Aldemir Martins, by Carlos A. C. Lemos

This article documents and analyzes the atelier of artist Aldemir Martins (1922-2006), designed in 1972 by Carlos Lemos (1925-2025) in Sumaré, São Paulo, and demolished in 2020. Based on family drawings, photos, and notes, it examines the architectural concept, adaptation to the sloped site, exposed concrete structure, and three levels under a sloping roof. The study places the work in the context of 1970s São Paulo architecture, marked by Brutalism, vernacular references, and formal experimentation, highlighting the space’s personal value for the artist. Combining record and critical analysis, it seeks to fill a gap on a lost example of Brazilian modern architecture and reflect on the loss of unprotected cultural assets.
