REM 90 years oldThis is a text quoted from a Adega Magazine editorial: Time, when respected, becomes a generous ally. Here, true quality is not measured by immediate intensity, but by its capacity for permanence. There is a special beauty in things that reveal themselves slowly, that perfect themselves silently, that honor our patience with unimaginable complexities. It seems it was written with REM in mind, now celebrating its 90th birthday, a milestone reached by only a few scientific publications in Brazil.
Furthermore, REM has managed to navigate this journey throughout its history, overcoming challenges, both financial and credibility-related, creating name that will forever be associated with the history of mining in Brazil. It is worth remembering that the first study on the production of metallic aluminum in Brazil was published in its first issue. In fact, during the first production of this metal (March 1945), in Ouro Preto, its first editor, Raimundo Campos Machado, was part of the engineering team.
Also, it is worth remembering that, since its creation in 1936 by students of the School of Mines of Ouro Preto, they managed to maintain it until the 1980s, without financial support. Therefore, many of them should be proud of what they did for Brazilian science, achieving this feat of keeping the journal afloat.
To fortify its existence, REM partnered with several scientific societies, such as the Brazilian Society of Geology (MG), the Brazilian Society of Geochemistry, and events held at the School of Mines, etc. This mutual support enabled the publication of the best articles from the various events sponsored by these entities. All of this, combined with the fundamental participation of the Gorceix Foundation (today, REM is a publication of the FG), was another factor that definitively enabled the stability required to maintain an enviable frequency.
Of course, assembling a team of associate editors from various countries, committed to the quality of the articles to be published, was an important factor in leveraging the journal. We must not forget those authors and reviewers who believe that the journal is the best medium for disseminating research work in the fields of engineering it covers.
Of course, the REM team knows very well that there is still a lot to achieve, and to celebrate this date, they must keep in mind that the magazine wants:
• To be an international reference in Engineering, combining academic rigor and clear language to make scientific knowledge accessible to diverse audiences.
• To advance and share Science through Open Access publications, projects, and partnerships, fostering global scientific communication.
• To promote rigorous peer review, high-quality information, and a commitment to education and technical culture among researchers, educators, and students.
It is important to remember that the definition of a scientific hub takes into account technological development resulting from research at both universities and corporate research centers; all of this would remain hidden without disclosure. And REM, at 90 years old, is proud to be part of the history of engineering development.
