Education and Women in the Works of Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho (1880 to 1905)

This text aims to analyze the representation of Portuguese women in the books Mulheres e Crianças: notas sobre educação, Cartas a Luiza: moral, educação e costumes and As nossas filhas: cartas às mães, by Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho, published in 1880, 1886 and 1905, respectively. The methodology is based on the New Cultural History, taking Chartier (1999) as a reference, since the book establishes an order, a theory defended by this author. In these works, the author, through circular narrative and epistolary writing, guides the moral and educational conduct of her readers in both the public and private spheres, resources used to make the discourse more persuasive, since, at the time, there was the influence of works with transgressive female figures, such as Emma Bovary and Indiana.
