From Alzira Soriano to Tainá de Paula: an intersectional perspective of 2020 elections

This article analyzes 2020’s municipal elections and the changes in the electoral code presented in 2021, pointing out advances, setbacks and obstacles to the political participation of women in decision-making positions. Through quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches, we analyze the electoral data of the state of Rio de Janeiro, based on the hypothesis that it reveals a mismatch between descriptive and substantive representation. We seek to highlight the structures of oppression that keep women in a subordinate position in the political sphere, mobilizing the concept of intersectionality in order to. Thus, initially we bring a quantitative radiography of the results of the 2020 election, followed by an analysis of the dispute of the idea of women, exemplified through the antagonic performances of two city councilors elected in the state.
