Amefricanities: on a Translation of Lélia Gonzalez to Spanish

The article presents some reflections resulting from the collective translation experience into Spanish of the book Por um feminismo afro-latino-americano, by Lélia Gonzalez. Initially, it discusses some challenges that the texts in this collection pose for translation, among them the need to investigate the erased black memories within the languages of the continent. It then addresses three specific cases related to Spanish from de region of Río de la Plata: first, the terms negro/a; then, quilombo and quilombola; and finally, some expressions related to domestic work. The article concludes by arguing for the need for black women to participate in the translation of works like this, as without their involvement it is not possible to build the Afro-Latin-American feminism to which Gonzalez refers.
