Open-access Models of femininity and well-behaved feminism: women mayors of Santa Catarina

Very few women mayors in Santa Catarina identify as feminists. Most of them are unaware of the meaning of this concept and describe themselves as feminine, reinforcing the idea of antagonism between these two concepts. However, several presented a model of femininity that includes the possibility of occupying positions of power. The sources for this text originate from research for the “Mandonas” project and the “History of Elected Women” project, in which we interviewed 30 women mayors of Santa Catarina between 2022 and 2023, using the Oral History methodology. Of these, 26 were elected in 2020 and the others are former mayors. We considered identification with feminism within a historical approach that involves thinking about plurality. The results present affirmations of stereotypes, policies that benefit women, and anti-feminist statements.
